Because we aren’t in the moment anymore. As soon as we get bored we pick up our phone and fill those empty spaces with nonsense. Time feels like it’s going by fast because we don’t stop to “smell the roses” as they say.
I don't like how Mustaine downplays his own musical legacy. I have NEVER heard Metallica fans shit on Megadeth. Peace Sells and Rust In Peace are recognized as timeless albums.
It really is another entire fantasy land to imagine the band that way. Hell cliff would’ve lived if Dave was kicked out that’s something to think about. You can tell Dave regretted not getting to see and be on good terms with cliff before he died :(
A lot of people make fun of Dave for still holding on to something so long ago, but the older I get the more I start to understand him. Some wounds are too deep to heal, even if he did it to himself, it still hurts.
Yeah, I mean for many years Lars and James cut Dave out of the picture, pretended he didn't exist, and acted as if he didn't contribute anything. There are two interviews that stand out. One is where Lars and James are being interviewed early on, and Lars says "its nice to have members in the band that contribute, because that wasn't the case before." And this is directed at Dave. To have the balls to say that when Mustaine's name is on songs as a co-writer. It's a slap in the face. To this day they play songs that Dave wrote with them. The other is during the MTV behind the music documentary. They are talking about when they kicked Dave out, and Lars is very arrogant and proud about how the kicked him out. Like he was trash to discard. I'm sure there are other instances. And this took place for years. So, I know what he meant by them keeping his head under water. And then because of that, you'd have Metallica fans (that weren't also Megadeth fans) shit all over Dave. When your favorite band trash talks an old member, you feel like you need to as well. I mean, Dave was always his worst enemy, so essentially he is responsible for how his life played out. Shit, even when Jason left, they basically cut him out too. They didn't even try with Jason. They didn't fight for him, like they were fighting for each other in this documentary. They didn't understand where he was coming from until many years later. But, all Jason wanted was the same respect they give Rob from day one. I think it meant a lot when they invited Dave to play at the 30th anniversary shows. It meant that Metallica was acknowledging him. And the Metallica fans that aren't also Megadeth fans can have a little respect for the guy that helped get this thing off the ground.
@@itsalwayssomething7490 They credited him and personally thanked him on the liner notes of kill em all, it wasnt u til Dave trash talked them and tried to make out he did everything that they decided too not publisise him anymore or give him the time of day. Lars to his credit over the years has tried to support Dave - going to megadeth shows etc and showing support but Dave kept trashing their name to publises his own. Dave has done a great job of projecting this victim/underdog persona to the world but it's nonsense. That interview where Lars said that was in 1985 and was clearly done in spite after Dave had sias he wrote everything and they wrote nothing etc (both of which are untrue bu both of them) And the behind the music one is quite obviously just awkwardly telling what happened,.Lars has stated regret at the way it happened not at what they did. Young guys at a pivotal moment in their life aren't the best decision makers. The irony is Dave has treated veeyone he's ever worked with band members and producers like trash yet he still gets sympathy for something that happened to him 40 years ago by a couple of 18 year olds
As a Metallica fan. I just got to say. I felt really bad for Dave. He is truly genuine. Good dude. I pray he beats his cancer battle. Both guys were on the verge of crying.
Dave expresses his feeling in such a mature way, that its actually sad to hear what he has to say. the more i hear about the things that happened, the more respect i have for dave. love that man, he’s a good guy.
@@deletedhero5579 Right. I like Dave Mustaine a lot, love Megadeth and I'm sure he's a really great guy when you get to the heart of him. But the reality is that those guys had to deal with him on an all-day, every day basis. Not just watch a clip of him on UA-cam where he's being endearing enough that you feel sorry for him. He was completely out of control and intolerable to be around, and at a certain point, that just isn't going to fly.
@@deletedhero5579 yeah he didn’t kick them for no reason. Some were stealing his gear for heroin. One was hitting on one of his friends ex and was just a plain douchebag, some had different playstyles and just didn’t fit in the band. List goes on. Dave Ellefson had some serious exposure from adultery and list goes on. And most importantly he has high standards in terms of his band.He only takes/keeps the best members fit for the role
@@smeckjee But yet people still give James and Lars grief for firing Dave for good reason. I'm not so sure about the Jeff young hitting on his girlfriend thing either, Dave admitted that he wronged Jeff.
The fact that Dave Mustaine can be that honest and completely drop any an all ego shows just how down to earth that man really is. Too few musicians with that kind of honesty and self reflective insight.
It's clear Dave is empathetic while Lars is not. Lars is the problem, not Dave. Lars had to be told how his behaviour impacted Dave, when he should've known better.
I only liked Metallica’s first four albums. The Black Album was the kiss of death of my love for the band and all subsequent albums were not for me. Same with Slayer. I liked their first 3 albums and EP. Didn’t care for South Of Heaven, Seasons Of The Abyss and all subsequent albums also. I’ll actually be seeing Slayer’s very last concert on this very last tour. Anyway, I think Anthrax and, especially Megadeth, are better bands with a much better album catalogue. Not to say every album was a “masterpiece” by either of those two bands. I think Anthrax and Megadeth held up the best, in my opinion, of the Big Four. I’ve yet to see a full Megadeth concert. I’ve only seen them play 3-times at festivals. Are their set lists 3+ hours like I’ve heard? Crazy.
jurgen vlaar Despite the fact that I prefer Megadeth to Metallica, I think Risk was way way worse than St Anger. At least St Anger was trying to be metal
I’ve always been a fan of Megadeth and Metallica. Dave’s “Rust in Peace”, is a masterpiece and will stand up to any Metallica album. Having watched this clip, I respect Dave even more than before.
Rest in peace is one of the greatest metal albums ever recorded. I like Metallica and was a huge fan early on but mustaine was DESTINED to create Megadeth and I feel a much more poster child representing metal....just my opinion.
He beat the shit out of some prick for putting a hot pizza in David Ellefson's face in '86. He does look after the ones he loves, but the ones he had a beef with, ouch. The many times Dave and Chris Poland would more or less try to kill each other...
"I wish Cliff was here." That's so sad man. You can see him just start thinking about Cliff and about the great times he had with Metallica. I'm sure Lars was thinking about Cliff as well.
When Dave says “ you don’t fuck with my band members “ I always tear up, when your in a band it really is a family and you can tell that James ,Lars,Cliff/Ron and Metallica were Dave’s life and it’s heartbreaking how everything went down but as traumatic as it was it was a blessing because he forged his own success and made Megadeth and metal really was revolutionized and now we get to enjoy both bands
@@Gcssdvnkloiutesc ever heard of trauma-based self sabotage? As long as you pass through psychotherapy and face the ominous shadows within your behaviour they still haunt you and make you act against all you've built within therapy, your mean behaving brain is struggling to fit with a brand new set of manners and ways to deal with triggering situations such as that of mr. Mustaine, and sometimes it glitches.
Sure, dave made some awesome music with an awesome band. Sure hes seen success without metallica. But the reason I feel he was still bitter over the years was because Metallica carried what dave wanted and lost: a sense of brotherhood. Gotta remember, Dave was the only consistent band member of megadeth, besides dave ellifson the bassist who was absent in a few albums. He never had a close connection with any of his bandmates because he kept firing them. Dave getting fired wasn't just losing a job to him; it was losing his family.
Dave Mustaine is a great living example of the American Dream. The guy came from a dirt poor background and went on to become one of the most successful and influential musicians of the 20th century. Dave has a lot to be very proud of.
American dream is: Pay taxes, don't say what you should not say, hate in China and Russia because that's what government says to you, pay taxes and die.
same :c, i literally cried a tear as I heard his sad voice saying that all he head was james and lars 😭 and you know what, James was narrating this incident in a very joyful manner like it was funny, i hated him at that moment :(
Metallica be like: "Dave, you are fired!!!" Dave be like: "Well I'm going to make my own band. With blackjack, and hookers! In fact, forget the band!!!"
As difficult and maybe unfair as it was when Dave got fired, what ultimately came out of it? The metal world got not one, but two amazing bands. Dave gave us Megadeth and I would never have it any other way. Metallica is my favorite band, but I also have a deep love for Megadeth. The metal world needs both of these two bands around. We are blessed to have them. It's also great that they patched it up. The response that Dave got when he played with Metallica at their thirtieth anniversary was nothing but love and respect. The way the MetClub fans chanted his name shows how much better he ultimately was for forming Megadeth. Also, when Dave said that he wished Cliff was there, I choked up. He died three years before I was born, but after hearing his bass through the first three albums, I can't help but be sad at the loss of such a tremendous talent.
Yeah, that part reminds me of someone in my family. You try to have this heartfelt, vulnerable moment of honesty and the other person shows what a disconnected, self-centered SOB they are.
Hayden The Metalhead No they didn't... lol wtf... Dave can play, but he can't sing. The band is just an incarnation of his true sadness of being kicked out like a sack of sad shit he is.
I think the most correct thing here was Dave's acknowledgement that it was probably for the best, but that he felt hurt that his friends kicked him out instead of trying to get him help.
The complete silence after dave says he wishes cliff was here was truly heartbreaking. Lars and Dave will always have their differences, but one thing they both have in common is that they both miss their brother
Cliff always hated Dave and wanted him fired. They barely knew each other. Every the narcissist, Dave hides behind a pretext of sincerity and good-will when he’s just bitter about blowing his chance at being part of one of the biggest bands in rock and roll.
@@Gcssdvnkloiutesc wdym? Dave lived with his parents once and even his parents love Megadeth I think if Cliff lived he would have joined megadeth when they started to sell themelf out
@@champ7846 Why wouldn’t he stay with him? Who do you think cliff is? First of all he was not a metal purist and enjoyed bands like The Police and blues rock just as much as metal. Second of all, the idea Metallica “sold out” with the black album is an internet meme believed in by the musically illiterate . Any musician can see how the black album was a natural progression. Justice for All was not well received at the time and their audience did not appreciate the yet further progressive and longer progressive punk metal songs that kept expanding since Kill. As musicians you want to grow, and what was natural was not to keep getting longer and more sophisticated until you got a one 40 minute song album that is math rock. It’s to try different things. They always did covers of short catchy hard rock songs like The Misfits. Black album was an organic progression that would of Been made with or without Bob rock. Load and Reload was an extension of Black Album. At that point they were middle-age. What middle-age man leaves a band they essentially co-founded and slaves for over a decade only to quit when after years of poverty they finally achieve financial success? You deify and mythologize someone who died young that didn’t live long enough to age, get fat, make mistakes, have a coke habit, whatever he was destined to do. It’s like moralizing about unborn babies, cliff remains unrealized potential and you mythologize what that would of been like the musical integrity myth. Music and artistic merit is only one part of being a musician. Like anyone else they have to earn a living.
@@EnwardSnowman 9/11 had JUST happened. This interview was meant to be postponed. But Dave demanded it go ahead anyway because, hey, he's "Dave and it's gotta be done now".

Kasperr i mean, it doesnt matter if it didnt even hurt him, ruining ur teammates instrument(when they were all broke) is enough to get kicked tf out of the band...
It’s not included here, but in SKOM, Dave explains to Lars that it wasn’t just the firing incident itself. Every day from then until today, and probably for the rest of his life, Dave hears about it from some stranger. It is literally impossible to get past for him.
Well, yes, but the reason why all the strangers and EVERY journalist on this earth constantly ask him about Metallica is because Dave CONSTANTLY whines about Metallica. Had he eventually buried the hatchet once, nobody would talk about it any more. But he has been ranting about it for 40 years now, so no one will ever not mention it.
A ha! We figured out why Lars never properly learned to use the double kick pedal! Dave was so fucked up, he broke Lars' leg - not Phil's, while in a drunken, cocaine haze. Cocaine. It's hell of a drug!
+John Smith But just think about it, if he was never kicked out, metallica could have turned out to be like megadeth, as much as a fan I am of metallica they did go down hill as soon after "...Justice for all". If Dave was still there they could have continued being a sick ass thrash metal band. But megadeth is still awsome to, I love them
You can tell that cliff was not only a very talented musician by the way the guys talk about him. He seemed like a big part of the glue and soul of the band.
He finally STOPPED doing drugs, then had his neck surgery between 13 and Super Collider, and then his chemo with his throat cancer ...yeah, he went from young to old in one decade. Way harder on the body than drugs. But the drugs he did as a youth ... it all caught up to him when he had all the health issues and ... yeah. it was sudden. It sucks. James LoMenzo is older than dave by 3 years and looks half his age.
That's age. Some people are lucky enough to still look amazing up till early 50s (Have you seen Jennifer Anniston?). But that's when the worst kicks in. In the beginning of the decade you look like your 40s, and by the end you're in your 60s and you look about 100 years old. Age doesn't work linearly, but exponentially. It gets at you very slowly in youth, then accelerates very rapidly after 40s.
I always believe in second chances, but had the band given Dave a second chance, there is NO way he would have stayed clean and sober. You had three other guys, who were entering a stage in life, known as "Alcoholica". They were young and they enjoyed those vices. As it has been stated many times before, when those three got drunk, there were your usual hi-jinks, when Dave got drunk, he got violent and was beyond stupid; I.E, Dave giving both James and Ron a beating, regarding the incident with his dog, the famous U-Haul incident heading east to New York, the Sandoval incident, Dave berating Adrian Vandenberg on the side of the stage during a gig where Metallica was playing, etc... This situation is no different than anyone else's in life. You have four friends that like to drink together. The three of you can somewhat master the effects of drinking, by not only having a shut off valve, but by also staying within the boundaries of sanity. Dave was not only a drunk, but a mean drunk and would end up being a major addict. I sympathize with all he went through as a child and the demons that ate away at him throughout his life and his inability to stay clean and sober. Having said that, he was part of a cog, where his destructiveness, would have torn that band apart. The fact that he started his own band, was the best thing he could do for himself, as he could build something that would rival Metallica and at least he was the key ingredient driving that band. In Metallica, it was a collaborative effort (for the most part), especially while Cliff was alive. With Megadeth, everything with began and ended with Dave, so even though his temperamental personality caused strife within his own band, he essentially was the band.
Almeida5 i agree with you from start to finish, it's good to see someone focusing a bit more on the affective side (which is clearly what this video is about) instead of the "dave shouldn't complain now he has megadeth and is filthy rich" yeah maybe he is but in order to do so he got his heart broken and his dreams crushed so... great analysis dude
Dave should've sought out a guitarist who could help him write songs. One man bands only go so far sonically. Megadeth is a good band but w another writer they could've reached new levels of songwriting ala Metallica.
@@E.C.2 dave tried to hire dimebag after chris poland got fired but dime wouldn’t join unless he could bring his brother vinnie along to play drums. dave had already hired nick menza so the deal eventually fell through. just imagine that timeline, megadeth with dime would’ve been amazing but there’s a good chance pantera never gets off the ground. i think we still got the best timeline.
@@E.C.2 what are you talking about? metallica owes just about everything it was to mustaine and burton. they shaped the whole band's early sound and after each member's departure you could hear the difference. they where still using mustaine's riffs in ride the lightning, you can still hear his influence in master of puppets.
I know he's angry. But his departure from Metallica was the best thing that could have happened. From that happening, Megadeth was born. One of the greatest metal bands ever. I hope he knows how great his band is and how important it is in the history of metal.
Weird to think that this was almost 19 years ago, but at the time Dave had only been kicked from the band 18 years or so prior, and Cliff had only passed 15 years prior.
If you didn’t know better, from this interview, you’d have thought Dave Mustaine was some poor, washed-up dude who had been working a soul-crushing job he hated for the past 20 years. That he never achieved commercial or artistic success. That he was never recognized for his musical talent. That he was never the front man of one of the most iconic metal bands in history.
Metallica are the most mainstream metal bands though. U are correct that Dave has had great success in Megadeth. That’s without dispute but when was the last time Megadeth played with Lady Gaga (yes I know it’s not artistically important)? Do the Yankees play Hanger 18 or enter sandman when Mo Rivera would take the field. I think u get where I’m going. I don’t have to point out that Metallica performed a kids/parade version of enter sandman on the tonight show not too long ago. Dave is just saying that when u get to that level of success he’s pissed he wasn’t apart of it. He admits he’s a detriment to the band back in the day. U should at least give the guy a shot to clean himself up before giving him the boot. Unfortunately there are 3 sides to this story so we will never know. Lars is sort of admitting that Dave wasn’t necessarily given a fair shake at rehab.
But despite Dave's success with Megadeth, he was still a man crushed. He didn't just lose the band when James and Lars kicked him out, he lost his brothers. From what I can see in this interview, eventhough Dave struck metal gold with Megadeth, he still didn't have what he always wanted, to be jamming with his only true friends. It's heartbreaking, especially when he mentions Cliff.
El señor de la tienda yes, but if dave had had the same thoughts about these guys back in the day, he would definitely have done something to stop drinking and drugging. anyway lars and james must have given him the second chance, or just help with getting on his feet after firing.
Some people can’t handle being number 2 though. I’m sure he didn’t think about Metallica once he got around to Rust in Peace, but I have to imagine that he must have felt like he was living in their shadow. From the beginning, James made Metallica his family, it was all he had, same with Dave. Then he gets kicked and some guy is already playing the riffs he had wrote. I’m gonna sum this up in one sentence in how and why Dave talks about Metallica the way he did. When Metallica formed, it was James, Lars, Dave, and Cliff, whereas Dave is Megadeth. It was a lonely band, where it didn’t feel like a family the way Metallica did.
"I wish Cliff was here..." you can tell that was a particularly heavy moment for them both.Cliff died 30 years ago today. I am watching the shit out of Cliff 'Em All. Smoke up, drink up, and celebrate the fuck out of his life!
I am a huge fan of Metallica very easily my favorite band of all time but I’m also a fan of Megadeth and Dave has nothing to be ashamed up in my book. I have plenty of friends that Megadeth is their favorite band. Megadeth was just as important to thrash metal as Metallica was. We don’t have metal today as we know it without all four of the big four, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax.
Yes, I myself wonder where the hell Metal went? What happened? Why are there no new true Metal bands out there now? While hip hop flourished after Metal all but dried up.
@@clankers8929 no issue dude. We have youtube videos to reminise those great music in past. Time will tell this hip hop music will be thing in the past and new music will flourish but nothing beats those pioneers bands music🤘
Pain is the mother that gives birth to all great things, I hate what happened to Dave, but I love how Metallica grew. Megadeth created a sound that only true metal heads understand. I was in prison and everyone knows nothing else matters, but only us who are true metalers know Holy Wars and that's the greatness of Megadeth born from pain.
+HoboJones10 he is a hypocrite though I respect how he rose from the ashes I respect that but Dave is a major asshole I can kinda see why cliff didn't like his personality
Dave sent a pick via a security guard to my son at his first MEGADEATH Concert in Reno. This guys got the biggest heart PERIOD!!, besides being a metal Legend!!
It's amazing how Dave could loose everything he had and come back to be just as big as he would've been initially. I honestly can't think of another instance of this. It shows just how talented these guys are. But this video is so painful to watch because you can almost feel the regret both of them were dwelling on.
This documentary was Lars’ most cynical marketing stunt...and yet I cannot look away. The clash of egos, the alcohol abuse and the betrayal make such good human drama, and it is rock and roll history so it deserves to be aired out
How is it cynical? It is the punk ethos and reaction against the 1970s elitism. The idea was to have a policy of transparency instead of secrecy and self-mythologizing like Led Zeppelin. You’re the one that’s cynical to interpret everything Lars does as selfish.
The way Dave says "I wish Cliff was here" then sits quietly, it really shows you what kinda relationship he had with the guys in metallica, and what kinda impact getting kicked out had on him.
@@lemon_curry_ Dave Mustaine has been battling cancer in his throat for a while now. In an interview Mustaine said that one of the things he was most pleased with was receiving a message from James Hetfield expecting him to recover.
i sure hope that Dave can look back now and see just how amazing and talented he truly is. i mean neck and neck i grew up with these bands and they are both still around and both still successful. and oh Dave by the way...you are a Legend to some...a Pioneer to others...but known in the metal world as a God! Dude ya did pretty damn well for yourself and should be extremely proud of what you've accomplished after how that happened. but the best and coolest thing for us the fans of the music...well...we got to grow up with a Megadeth and a Metallica. so thank for going through your pain to write the music that would heal mine. i love ya dave and lars thank you both for all the amazing music thank you thank you thank you.
Lars was high when Phil was bullying him, Dave beat Phil's ass so bad that Dave feels bad about it, and Lars is now so rich he forgot Phil existed. ....Or .... Lars might have repressed that a little bit.
I'm a long time Megadeth fan and I'm happy that Dave got kicked out. Thanks to that decision, we now have not one, but TWO amazing thrash metal bands, inspiring fans and musicians all over the world. The rage coming out from getting kicked out of his new family turned to some incredible music, such as "Peace Sells" or "Rust in Peace". The world should be really grateful, because we get to listen to two stunning metal bands.
Read Dave's biography, he describes in detail when he broke Phil's ankle to protect Lars from the guys in Armoured Saint, Dave protected Lars and James and they stabbed him in the back, I really feel for the guy :/
“I wish James were here. I wish Cliff were here.” Such a heartbreaking statement by Dave. With all his fame, fortune, and success with Megadeth, he still badly and desperately wants to be in Metallica. 😢
I think it's great, he can talk like this today. He puts the whole story, his story, into words so maybe everybody understands his side. He does a pretty good job.
Gotta feel sorry for Dave but he was spiraling out of control, but then again James too is an an alcoholic and they put the band on hold AND made an album with songs about that era. You would have thought they might have helped Dave at some point. But then again Lars too has a valid point, they were young and had to sacrifice plenty to get where they are now. A sad ending to what could have been an amazing line up and imagine the songs Dave and James would have written together
James drank, but he didn’t get violent with people when drunk like Dave. That’s the worst thing in the world, having to live/work with a violent drunk. I don’t blame them for firing him. He would’ve kept being abusive if they didn’t. Anyway, they would’ve gotten rid of him somewhere along the line because you can’t have so many massive creative forces in one band. Too much henpecking.
So after watching this I decided to finally watch Some Kind of Monster and was surprised how much of this interview is chopped out, but afterwards I realized how self-indulgant that doc was. This interview really illustrates how Lars was focussed on big-picture fame and Dave above all else was looking for a loving creative family. It’s heartbreaking to hear these two speak about their time together because they never were shooting for the same goals. Also Lars not remembering the name of a guy whose leg Dave broke defending him is very revealing.
You mean Cliff? Because Dave and Cliff WERE reconciling. Just before the Master of Puppets European tour Cliff came to a Megadeth concert and he and Dave more or less made amends. Basically Dave just got (or was in the process of getting) a dear friend back, only to have him die almost immediately after. So, yeah, that is indeed truly heartbreaking.
This was a deep interview because it was like they were still young talking. I remember seeing Killing Is My Business back in 86 in the back record case in the Melody House a local record store. One of my prized possessions along with Peace Sells.
Man this just shows how real Dave is. Metal wouldn't be what it is without Megadeth, as much as Metallica. It was meant to be, but damn what a shitty situation. I think it goes without saying ALL those guys were dickheads back in the day, not just a drunk Mustaine
Dave says there were ways to address what was happening around that time, and he's right, there were better ways to address it, but you need to remember, they were a bunch of 19-20 year old kids. They wouldn't have known which way was proper and right. They were trying to launch their metal dreams full steam ahead, saw Dave as a roadblock, and moved him out of their way. I'm glad it happened this way because Megadeth was born out of this and they're an awesome fucking band.
Musically, it was for the best, and it's good that Lars and Dave were able to make amends. I'm sure Dave and James have done the same since then. Because Metallica was better off without Dave, and the metal world wouldn't be the same without Megadeth.
Its a great thing that they sat down and did this. I hope Dave had been able to let go and grow. Metallica, the band and as individuals, have grown so much since and helped many other people do the same. \m/
Holy shit Lars actually kept his mouth shut and listened! He cant even do that with James. Its crazy to hear them talking about shit that happened 18 years ago at the time of filming this interview and realizing this interview itself is 20+ years old
Dave broke my heart hearing this. The outcome was perhaps an invisible Blessing. As heartbreaking this was, only made Dave a better person, stronger and better musician. But what gets me is that they ALL drank and how ironic that at the time of this intimate interview, James was in a Re-Hab for the VERY REASON they fired Dave for!! Idk these guys on personal level but was it that Dave was an arrogant drinker? Did he not fit I'm with the rest? Idk and I don't think anyone knows except them. Dave, my hero, you're an exceptional Artist, an absolute determined, savvy business man. I love YOU and I Love Megadeath!! I think you're an inspiration to many, many fans and kids alike!! Thank You for the many, many songs and the endless hours of music. love you Brother.🤘🏻
It was because Dave got violent when he drank. But i agree they could've gave him an ultimatum instead of just cold kicking him out like that. I also wonder why they waited until they got to New York before telling him he was out. Couldn't they have just told him in California? Maybe kicking him out in New York to send him on a 4 day bus journey home was done on purpose to humliate him. Which was a horrible thing to do if it was.
It's still touching to see this even after all of these years later. But whatever fueled Dave after the firing, he still accomplished the impossible ...twice. One thing is sure. Dave was so utterly secure in his talent that nothing was going to stop him. When they let their guard down, you can tell both James and Lars are somehow proud and a bit in awe of Dave. Rightfully so.
It breaks my heart to hear Dave say "I wish Cliff was here" You can really hear how much he misses Cliff Burton in his voice.
Just imagine if Cliff was still alive :p... Great people really die young..

I don't like how Mustaine downplays his own musical legacy. I have NEVER heard Metallica fans shit on Megadeth. Peace Sells and Rust In Peace are recognized as timeless albums.
Peace Sells and Rust in Peace are what he's going to be remembered for. Makes most thrash bands look like ass-monkeys in comparison.

"I still have my dreams" my favorite Dave quote. It hits real deep for those who understand regret.
It really is another entire fantasy land to imagine the band that way. Hell cliff would’ve lived if Dave was kicked out that’s something to think about. You can tell Dave regretted not getting to see and be on good terms with cliff before he died :(

It`s nostalgia. Dave has had great success with Megadeth. Him trying to blame Lars for not having a better life, shows how ungrateful he is.
@@jye_24 Imagine if Dave was the one who got Cliff’s bunk on the night he died?
I think Dave is looking for true acknowledgement, without it he's incomplete, still kick ass
That interview where Lars said that was in 1985 and was clearly done in spite after Dave had sias he wrote everything and they wrote nothing etc (both of which are untrue bu both of them)
And the behind the music one is quite obviously just awkwardly telling what happened,.Lars has stated regret at the way it happened not at what they did. Young guys at a pivotal moment in their life aren't the best decision makers.
The irony is Dave has treated veeyone he's ever worked with band members and producers like trash yet he still gets sympathy for something that happened to him 40 years ago by a couple of 18 year olds
i think lars and james are the only 2 who made fun of him. even kirk hasnt put him down even though dave says kirk sucks lol

Well he was fighting cancer.
Cancer tends to have that effect

The last 19 years have gone quite quickly. I wonder if they felt the 19 years before that to have gone as quickly.
He is a master manipulator and has a devilish way with words it’s crazy
Ew you like basketball, stop liking metal barbarian
@@clankers8929 no issue dude. We have youtube videos to reminise those great music in past. Time will tell this hip hop music will be thing in the past and new music will flourish but nothing beats those pioneers bands music🤘

Pain is the mother that gives birth to all great things, I hate what happened to Dave, but I love how Metallica grew. Megadeth created a sound that only true metal heads understand. I was in prison and everyone knows nothing else matters, but only us who are true metalers know Holy Wars and that's the greatness of Megadeth born from pain.
It's ironic considering how many dreams Dave has ended by firing band members.
Lol. he gets to whine because he's Dave Mustaine. lol
+HoboJones10 he is a hypocrite though I respect how he rose from the ashes I respect that but Dave is a major asshole I can kinda see why cliff didn't like his personality
HE FOCKING LEFT THE BAND.PERIOD EXCLAMATION POINT
yes but he gave them multiple chances.not even second chances, he gave them more. he actually talkes about this in some detail in his book.
***** Nick Menza is dead.
When he said I wish cliff was here I felt that. Dave was on the verge of tears.
Dave sent a pick via a security guard to my son at his first MEGADEATH Concert in Reno. This guys got the biggest heart PERIOD!!, besides being a metal Legend!!
I wish that I had a tall, raging ginger to break the legs of those who harass me. :(
Un Desconocido me too
I'll help you out
😂😂😂😂
It's amazing how Dave could loose everything he had and come back to be just as big as he would've been initially. I honestly can't think of another instance of this. It shows just how talented these guys are. But this video is so painful to watch because you can almost feel the regret both of them were dwelling on.

Ozzy, when he was kicked of Black Sabbath. They were all doing the same thing, but Ozzy was taking it too far.
Dave: everytime i see Phil, I feel bad for him. But i wasn’t gonna let him hurt you.
Lars: Who’s phil
Lmao
Phil Sandoval. Armored Saints's guitarist.
this has so much emotion to it, i love how they dont hate each other anymore
This documentary was Lars’ most cynical marketing stunt...and yet I cannot look away. The clash of egos, the alcohol abuse and the betrayal make such good human drama, and it is rock and roll history so it deserves to be aired out
that art auction scene was SO cringe! Lars seems like such a douche lol
I'm not even a heavy metal fan and I love it
its not that good it is pathetic for all involved. megadeth is so much better than metallica. fuck this interview.
How is it cynical? It is the punk ethos and reaction against the 1970s elitism. The idea was to have a policy of transparency instead of secrecy and self-mythologizing like Led Zeppelin. You’re the one that’s cynical to interpret everything Lars does as selfish.
Cringe comment
Dave is a metal god, whatever happens, he is legendary. One of the founders of metal.

i wish they could just say, "fuck man, we were kids, shit should have been handled better on both sides"
The way Dave says "I wish Cliff was here" then sits quietly, it really shows you what kinda relationship he had with the guys in metallica, and what kinda impact getting kicked out had on him.
Dave Mustain, my hero!
Nobody can be like him!
He is the best!
I so wish James could have been part of this meeting
serigraph73 yep. Same. Exactly what I was thinking
Nah James it's like a snake, always hiding behind Lars. It's Lars the one who get all the hate, but James is not much better than him.
@@matiasmirandaarrredondo8231 James contacted Dave when he said he got cancer in 2019. James is more reserved than Lars, that's all.

@@lemon_curry_ Dave Mustaine has been battling cancer in his throat for a while now. In an interview Mustaine said that one of the things he was most pleased with was receiving a message from James Hetfield expecting him to recover.
Heart goes out to Dave...the other guys were no worse than he was.....Glad he formed MEGADETH and went on to have success....
You can tell Lars sincerely regrets it happening and that they have chemistry but even through it all they still respect each other
Yeah Lars and James definitely feel bad and Dave acknowledges why he was fired I’m glad they’re over it and are better with each other again
i sure hope that Dave can look back now and see just how amazing and talented he truly is. i mean neck and neck i grew up with these bands and they are both still around and both still successful. and oh Dave by the way...you are a Legend to some...a Pioneer to others...but known in the metal world as a God!
Dave was more successful leading Megadeth than he would have been just being a part of Metallica
To be honest i'm so glad he made megadeth because i love their music so much.
i dont like as many of their songs but i do love Symphony of Destruction, Rust in Peace, and Hanger 18.
Chris Nelvin RISK ??? Ring any bell?
+Mikka It's better forgotten
Mikka Risk is not Megadeth, it sounds more like some Dave Mustaine side project album
Glad Dave mustaine got kicked out, because now we have the Metallica we know and love today and also have megadeth.
Also we wouldn't have the exodus we know today.
thejdog03 And I'm glad Dimebag Darrell didn't joined Megadeth in 1990 because now we have the Megadeth and the Pantera we love today
Razor Age pantera blows tbh, Exhorder is better
And also Megadeth? What about now we have the Megadeth we know and love today.
Dave has become mellow over the years. He has been pretty wholesome for the last few years after overcoming his demons
I have never seen this piece of a interview and it was heartwrenching!
This isn't an 'interview', its a therapy session.
Interesting how the incident with Phil Sandoval is clearly a deep and vivid part of Dave’s personal history and Lars can barely remember it.
Lars was high when Phil was bullying him, Dave beat Phil's ass so bad that Dave feels bad about it, and Lars is now so rich he forgot Phil existed. ....Or .... Lars might have repressed that a little bit.
All that beautiful and tenderness from Dave went into gorgeous music. I think he absolutely knows that now
As a fan from the 80's. I never thought I'd see the day Dave and Lars sit down and have a conversation about what took place.
He also showed them how to really shred because before Misyaine was in the band James was more into just singing and Dave got him to play guitar.
Will Grello james knew how to play but didn’t really want to be doing it
"They stabbed him in the back"... Yeah, sure. I'm sure Dave being a violent alcoholic had nothing to do with it
Will Grello this is wrong. Where did this rumor come from? James has been playing guitar as a kid and before he formed Metallica with Lars.
Dave is a narcissistic man.
“I wish James were here. I wish Cliff were here.” Such a heartbreaking statement by Dave. With all his fame, fortune, and success with Megadeth, he still badly and desperately wants to be in Metallica. 😢
missed it completely
It’s disgusting and repulsive. Would he feel the same way if Metallica wasn’t as successful and touring stadiums? He is envious of the fame and money.
@@Gcssdvnkloiutesc disagree. Or rather, since it's a question, yes
@Gcssdvnkloiutesc he has money.he has success.he has OTHER business ventures aside from Megadeth.Lars has Metallica and that's it.
I think it's great, he can talk like this today. He puts the whole story, his story, into words so maybe everybody understands his side. He does a pretty good job.
The power of narcissism.
4:53 I'm not mad at you Lars
Made me realise that they are finally over the conflict, they are more mature
You are a m0r0n. Dave fired every member that ever played for megadeath. He is a self righteous hypocrite and delusional narcissist.
That was very emotional, I feel so sorry for Dave, He really is a good guy
Top Ten Saddest Anime Confrontations
5:20 thats truly truly heartbreaking to see. Dude never got a chance to reconcile with him, thats gotta be the most painful shit ever.
I'm happy they did the reunion and worked a lot of shit out. It was so cool to see him on stage with them after all this time.
You heard it here first..Lars is really attracted to Dave
Oh Long Johnson Who wouldn’t be, honestly

This was a deep interview because it was like they were still young talking. I remember seeing Killing Is My Business back in 86 in the back record case in the Melody House a local record store. One of my prized possessions along with Peace Sells.
Man this just shows how real Dave is. Metal wouldn't be what it is without Megadeth, as much as Metallica. It was meant to be, but damn what a shitty situation. I think it goes without saying ALL those guys were dickheads back in the day, not just a drunk Mustaine
I agree with Dave being resentful. He's allowed to think that way.
WELL THAT WAS BACK IN THE DAYYYUGH!
I wish cliff was here too. Such a sad clip
Its a great thing that they sat down and did this. I hope Dave had been able to let go and grow. Metallica, the band and as individuals, have grown so much since and helped many other people do the same. \m/
4:39 this change of atmosphere gets me every time
My fave part. Change of the heart ahahha
Holy shit Lars actually kept his mouth shut and listened! He cant even do that with James. Its crazy to hear them talking about shit that happened 18 years ago at the time of filming this interview and realizing this interview itself is 20+ years old
Dave’s guitar playing, unique vocals are unmatched. He’s truly a one of a kind, and true embodiment of punk rock.
Punk rock?? 😂 Metal up you ass!!!
Unique vocals? More like incompetent.
what the fuck
punk rock..???
Everything worked out for the best we got lots of great music from both bands, both are undeniable.
" I had nothing , then i had everything , then had nothing again "
This breaked my heart
Dave looks like 30 and lars like 50 xd
It's still touching to see this even after all of these years later. But whatever fueled Dave after the firing, he still accomplished the impossible ...twice. One thing is sure. Dave was so utterly secure in his talent that nothing was going to stop him. When they let their guard down, you can tell both James and Lars are somehow proud and a bit in awe of Dave. Rightfully so.
