Why Do Guitars Always Sound Better In Stereo?

- In this video James from The Studio Rats get's his stereo fix by experimenting with 2 identical amps, speakers, mics set ups and some glorious stereo effects.
The amps in question are The Studio Rats own custom amps the Cornell TSR20 which are running into two 4x12 speaker cabs. James then records these with a pair of JZ Microphones Amethyst condenser mics.
The pedal board features the new Universal Audio Lion 68 Super Lead Amp, the TC Electronic SCF Gold Chorus, the TC Flashback x4 and the Strymon Cloudburst, just to make things really wild.
Let us know what you think about the tones created and if you think that stereo amps might work for you.
You can find out more about some of the kit used in video by checking out the following links.

Love your demo, very informative and helped me understand my pathway decisions better with my pedals.
Nice demo & great to hear you playing. Not bad at all for a drummer! 😉👍
Great demo James 👍🏻
I love a stereo sound and do it a lot simpler than your example. I play through a Blackstar ID Core 100 with a stereo out. In the effects loop I use a Boss ME 80 multi FX pedal which also has a stereo out. To my ears, the sound out of this amp is heavenly.
The answer is yes. Nice tones and today. Well done.
LOVED THE DEMO
Sounds cool
I love this very much cause i love stereo rig. My pedalboard are wired in stereo but can be easily used as summed to mono with a flick of a switch on my Goodwood Audio Interfacer pedalboard patchbay. I boost the stereo sensation further by using the TC Electronic’s MIMIQ DOUBLER pedal at the end of the chain, & boy, it even gets better! Anyway, this is a great video!
Cool! Sounds great! I'm happy with my mono setup, though. I must keep it simple for my sanity's sake. 😂
The world is not a monaural environment, so naturally guitars sound "better" in stereo. However, quite often mono works better when finding a place for it in a stereo mix with other instruments. Another option is to place some degree of "wet" effects on one side and the dry guitar in the other. It gives some of the spacial effect of stereo without stealing space from other instruments.
Best rig ever. I had a custom made 'skateboard' that held a 50 watt Marshall Bluesbreaker and a 59 Bassman.I'd roll it into the gig and leave one amp to the far right of the stage while the other remained on the rolling cart on the left side of the stage. Plugged my guitar in using a 'Y' cord. Kicked ass and took names. Probably had some issues with cancellation but it sounded great to the naked ear.
Did you try using the cab emulation to simulate the Marshall on the other cab? It'd be cool to hear if you can't really tell the difference. This was a great video. Cheers.
We have the same guitar my friend great value out of that beast.
Gotta love a Jivey episode
James,
It all sounds lovely! In my own Mickey Mouse two-amp rig, I'm also using a stereo chorus as a splitter. My question is with the SCF Gold Chorus, are the two outputs actual stereo? Or is it just one side wet and one side dry? I have an MXR Stereo Chorus as a "splitter" and it sounds nice, but I was disappointed to find it's only one channel wet and one channel dry.
I’m still hoping that you guys will do a gear review of the Fishman Fluence pickups…. Fingers crossed!!
Great post now am going w/d/w 👍👍
Brian Moore guitars that people don’t remember because they went direct. They were one of the first that did piezo so they’d give u a special cable but yes you obviously needed two amps and they had their usb and synth idea that was on the guitar stolen. Idk how or why re patents but they got them back. Super strats. Anyway, a bit off topic towards the middle. Sorry James.
Maybe switch the EQ and the Lion position ? I find EQ after Overdrive is more flexible
Um.. because we have 2 ears? 😊
Where can we pick up those amps?!?
ok then , i'll admit , this beats my practise set up : blackstar fly 3 / od pedal /tele : )
Hi. You didn't say how you dealt with phase and earth loop issues running two amps. Or did I miss something. You have to be super lucky not to have those issues when running two amps
Well said. I was about to ask the same question
If there was any phase correction it was probably done post in the DAW. Which is almost cheating
Line isolator on the signal + Humno on amps power maybe?
Sure it sounds better but it isn't always called for....sometimes in a mix it's overkill.
Said the amp salesperson. ;)
Rather complicated for a simple man such as I.
Really frustrates me when you see guys running a sound system in mono. It makes me think “why are they running sound with such an elementary misunderstanding of sound”….
No. Mono please.
....because it's 2024
Stop the margarine hair look or I’m going back to Andertons vids for fashion tips.
We’ve found this weeks stupid comment of the week folks!!!
haven't we just!
