90% of teardowns on you tube: Use the iFixIt spudger to remove the feet to access screws.
MVG: Use a Fender Medium guitar pick...
It just works :)
I've done it in the past also. Thinner picks work better. iFixit used to use actual guitar picks in their teardowns before they started manufacturing their own.
I mean the ifixit kit also contains guitar picks

@@bitelaserkhalif Old cards work great! I sharpen one edge so it can slide in even the tightest cracks.
Giggity.
its pretty cool how the inside metal assembly looks like one of the old giant hard drives from the 70s/80s

I'm pretty sure the case design was "inspired" by a minimalist 80s radio.

The 70s??? Lol
Jesus that's probably the easiest console tear down I've ever seen. It's like Microsoft's XBOX team willfully made it purposely this simple just for consumers. Wow Microsoft, props.
Nah, the easiest console to take apart is easily the Dreamcast imo. 4 screws and you're in.
@@SonicBoone56 well I mean... If we're comparing to consoles THAT old I got a shelf full of easy ones lol. The first several Xbox360s sucked to pull apart, it's just nice to Microsoft's Xbox team appeal more to the consumers than that did before.
For consumers or for tech support/repairs. Why make your technician's life harder? especially on the "budget" console of this generation, which I suspect will be quite popular
Well assuming you can upgrade the internal SSD I will give props to Microsoft.
You pretend that a non-negligible percentage of consumers will ever open this up. They won’t. Easy reairability shouldn’t be a priority because very few people care.
I like how the fan is labelled 'FAN'.
My Wang is named Wang wood u like pics 🤣
And it shows which way the fan spins when powered on. This console really is idiot-proof, you'd have to try really hard to break it accidentally
I’m a big fan of that
It should be "ONLY FAN"
@@thealien_ali3382 sorry none of us have microscopes
That is a seriously cleverly designed bit of kit. Considering how everything these days seems to use clips and glue to achieve miniaturisation it’s extremely refreshing to see something so compact remain simple to repair.
That's an engineering masterpiece
As a ps fan i always believed that the xbox one s was better build hardware wise than the ps4 slim ... microsoft did it again .
Maybe need a riser or custom caddy to replace that SSD with the larger one
"bit of kit"... "full fat" ... hey you are being influenced by Richard Leadbetter! *Waves hands*
@@bpcgos it looks like a 2242 size m.2, no, you don't. You just need the money to buy a new one and the means to make it work
The fact that the ssd isn't soldered on the motherboard is a huge plus in my book.

@@VRforAll Probably. I got the series x but there's always something better in the pipeline.

@TRIX TRIXI have no reason to believe they would do this previously the one and one x the HDD could be replaced. Why would they make the ssd be slotted but not replaceable when its going to be one of the failure point.
The XSS is really beautiful inside. Well engineered and simple.

Maybe they left it on the PCB on purpose to try and get unlicensed 3rd party developers on the Xbox so that it's software catalogue doesn't turn into that of Windows Phone/10 Mobile and this "hacking" may also lead to increased sales over the PS5 (idk if theres any debug headers on PS5 PCBs)

Microsoft definitely cared about piracy. That's why they combat this with developer mode.
MS engineers must be really confident on their machine for sending it to a guy known for making videos about how consoles are hacked. That or someone is losing their sleep right now.

Consoles haven't been hacked in a while. This isn't ps3 era. Console makers know better.
Also sending the console earlier to him will make no difference. The consoles are gonna be on the market soon after anyway.
MS makes dev mode available on Xbox, which removes the homebrewers from the group of potential hackers, and Xbox game pass removes a lot of the pirates, leaving only the people that want Linux who want the console to be hacked, so it's probably not an issue since I'd say MVG belongs to the homebrew/emulation group
ils savent se qu'ils fond, c'est un argument de plus pour que je prend la console de Microsoft, et c'est du bon travaille..
FYI, that "foamy material" is RF shielding, not noise reduction.
@@Sneakyboson It might, maybe, but that's not what it's for and not a sign that MS used it to 'engineer for silence'... they engineered it for RF radiation regulatory compliance. MVG is just more of a software guy than a hardware guy.
@@carbonsx3 Exactly. I've been working in military and industrial electronics for about 30 years. That type of metal coated foam has been used in that type of electronics for even longer than that. It was only ever described to us as RF shielding, and nothing at all to do with sound dampening. Hell, the only moving part in the Xbox Series S is the fan anyway, and those foam pieces are nowhere near it. It is nice to see commercial electronics finally using it so extensively though.
Well, it's "electrical noise" reduction alright XD

There's only so much nudity allowed on youtube.
Last comment, I promise: I love the engineering in Series S. I love the cable-less design. The Series S is really a little engineering gem. I see Microsoft has really learned some lessons from past experiences and are rather determined not to repeat them. Everything is nicely put together. Thank you MVG for this video!
Absolutely love teardown videos like this, it's so fun to see how they redesign internal layouts with each gen.
Loved repairing 360s, but hated the Xbox One series - this looks so much easier.
Those warranty seals are illegal in the usa, and the major console manufacturers got their hands slapped for them last cycle. Glad to see they're gone. (I like the color coded screws too!) Hopefully spare parts will appear to complement the apparent repairability of the things not soldered in. Not quite as easy to clean the ventilation as the ps5 teardown, but still pretty nice!
The silvery foam padding for the ports is also for emi shielding: is the "nicer" alternative to the more common "little metal fingers" approach of connecting the metal case to the grounded port housings.
Curious if that case is stamped metal, or metalized plastic: looks like a pretty complicated/detailed shape.
Love the removable ssd! Hope they are actually end user replaceable!
Chip under cpu looks like Micron (Crucial) RAM.
Great teardown, thanks!
Probably they are, there would just be a need to reinstall os with usb
Informative comment!
my bet is stamped aluminium on that EMI shield on the top.
The series x has illegal warranty stickers
@@chriswiandt4907 I am disappoint
The chip on the underside is most likely a GDDR6 chip, specifically the lower-speed 2 GB portion of it (I expect it to have 4 memory channels, which would match the expected 224 GB/s if they use 4x32 bit 14 Gbps chips - each of the channels has a 2 GB chip, except one of them that has an additional 2 GB chip that's hanging alone in that part of the address space, thus only giving 56 GB/s).
I don't expect anyone to be able to gather anything significant from the drive, all content is likely to be encrypted and no plaintext would be visible outside of the CPU, just like in the One (@MVG you should definitely check out Tony Chen's presentation about Xbox One security!)
I just hope it's possible to swap the drive like you can on the One, AFAIK you don't even need special tools now, just run the recovery from USB!
Yeah I've checked out the markings and it is a 16Gb (2GB) GDDR6 chip from Micron (MT61K512M32KPA-14). There are four other RAM chips around the SoC, so it all checks out. One 8GB pool on a 128-bit bus, and the other 2 GB on a 32-bit bus.
Legit question. Haven't done any mods since 360. Is there any visible reason preventing jtaging and dumping the cpu output, and the reverseeng go from there?
@@ErKtheErK one of the reason is that the CPU is FAST, but even sniffing RAM wouldn't help, everything is encrypted. They use the same Pluton engine as Azure Sphere, which in turn was derived from Xbox One.
@@pikachulovesketchup666 extremely more complicated for sure, but essentially the same thing as fooling the system to boot no mater what the "Nintendo logo" on a game boy. Take any received value, and return a working one.
Obviously very few people have their hands on these at this point. Purely speculation on my part.
@@ErKtheErK Not really the same. On Xbox One the CPU itself decrypted everything and verified all of the signatures, so it's not just like the Nintendo logo: all of the code and assets need to be encrypted and signed with Microsoft keys, which hopefully won't be cracked for decades. Look for the presentation I mentioned on my first comment, it goes quite in depth (and it's not reverse engineered, it's from the Xbox security team itself - they are so sure of their work they aren't even keeping details to themselves)
Alright, never thought I'd say this.. I am an absolutely diehard PlayStation fan, but I gotta admit the XSS is a cool piece of kit. Well done Microsoft.
Same here. Every video I watched on MVG about the XSS points toward a solid value.
I've been waiting for this! I was hoping to see a teardown for this one! You the man MVG!
Why didn't you take off the heat sink? Seriously stopped short of what I was interested to see.
@Alejandro Tobienne it does he showed it towards the end. 512gb NVMe SSD.
you ever messed around with x-clamps? huge pain in the ass, back in the 360 days I would always just end up swapping the x-clamps with machine screws if I removed one because it just isn't worth the headache. Can't say I blame him for not wanting to potentially damage the original equipment before the console is even officially released
Me also. I wanted to see the thermal paste application on the SOC. Maybe clean it and upgrade the paste to a better paste or pad.
@@OutlawFarmersRC some MX-04 would be a good choice
I wanted too but I didn't have any thermal paste to reapply.
I wasn't expecting the SSD to be a standard part! Hopefully it can be upgraded without too much trouble.
Like he had said, there's no telling if it is encrypted or not.
Considering this console is digital only, the SSD must be encrypted? It wouldn't make sense if it wasn't.
@@studioviper3016 It could be encrypted, but you may be able to replace it, as you could replace the hard drive on an Xbox One or PS4. We'll probably find out soon.
@@MartinPaoloni if u can upgrade the SSD, that will be one awesome advantage cause buying a 2tb SSD and slap it in, u will have one hell of a digital only console

@@thealien_ali3382 if you want to clean it you just have to open the case. Which is pretty easy as seen in the video. If you ever tried that with an Xbox One youd know why I consider it easy with this one xD
I do wonder about the warranty void sticker. I wonder if they either sent him a review unit (that he could keep) that doesn't have the sticker, or the pieces covering the outer screw holes are secret warranty void stickers?
@@thealien_ali3382 this is beyond easy. literally "AUTO" mode if it translates directly to videogame difficulty. just unscrew the green screws and bum you can clean the Series S.

Excellent episode and very illustrative of the inner workings of that machine!
Replacing the M.2 drive wit ha bigger one can be gamechanging for this console. Especially for people that plan to buy a new gen console, but have no plans to jump to 4K, and just stay with their 1080p monitors.

Exactly, I'm still getting series x even though I don't have a 4k tv
I am getting a series S cause I just bought a new monitor and it only caps out at 1080p 144Hz, but I was wondering if the difference in Teraflops is that big of a deal?
@@just_tom00 Yes it is. Series s is honestly more like one x with ssd. You will still feel the difference between series s and previous generation but the difference between series s and series x is even bigger. Even right now games like ac valhalla are not able to run at 60 fps on xss meanwhile series x is doing that with 4k resolution. In my opinion, if your only argument for getting s and not x is that you don't have 4k , it's not worth it. I like series s and it has its uses but the difference between xss and xsx is really big. Trust me, a lot of people buying series x don't have a 4k monitor.

I loved that you explained what security researcher would look for
I'm sold now, will definitely get an Xbox Series S
The “controller” on the bottom appears to be the boot NAND Flash. My guess is the firmware lives there instead of the SSD.
Also the padding appears to be EMI gaskets. They seal the seams to prevent emissions and susceptibility.
Overall it is a really nice design.
If you're right, it would be cool if it has everything needed to install the OS over Ethernet onto a replacement SSD, which would make storage upgrades very easy
Great engineering from the xbox team the disassembly was clean!
OMG I've been waiting for thissss I don't know why I'm so excited BTW

I probably won't teardown my set when I get it, but its therapeutic to watch this teardown video. It's cool.
Say goodbye to the warranty. But this is the content we want :D nice
The purpose of the Master Chief logo on the power supply is not for aesthetics (how many people are actually tearing down their console?) The purpose is the same as Apple, they put their trademarks on everything so that it makes knock off parts (and thus liability from knock off parts) less of a problem for them because they can then be seized by customs for Trademark infringement which is just about the only thing you can get customs to seize cargo for.
BS
But why master chief? Isn't the xbox logo better? I mean, the xbox logo as a mark of trademark makes more sense than a master chief logo.
it also seems the chief logo is directly adobe the power connector on the motherboard.
That’s correct. That’s why cheap Chinese spare parts either have the apple logo blacked out with a marker or on cover parts they just put black tape on the apple and iPhone logo, so that they, most of the time, still get through customs.
Nintendo and Sega have both done the same with the boot rom on their old consoles/cartridges. They could sue companies for making bootleg cartridges because the GameBoy and Genesis would require the boot code with the logo baked into it. They go after trademark infringement because the bootleg or unauthorized carts would most likely contain that logo in its code.
Most of the springy stuff on the outer shell and the foamy stuff on the inside is mainly for EMC (Electro Magnetic Compatibility or Compliance), this ensures that the outer shell acts like a proper Faraday cage. That stuff is used to seal all the seams/gaps from EM point of view.
Great to see that no mistakes were made!
The removable SSD is looking real promising!
I hope that's the case, cause this generation I am buying a ps5/rtx 3080 and owning a series s for another room for digital downloads would be awesome and just slapping in a 2tb SSD would be epic. Places like cd keys and g2a have awesome deals on digital games
MVG, you REALLY make me want a Series S...
I really like the way everything connects together on this. IDK if the no wires thing really matters but definitely is cool.

Thanks for sharing! great video. The foam around the connectors is used to meet EMC standards. It's called Conductive Fabric Over Foam Core and helps prevent high frequency noise leaving xbox and interfering with other devices.
As an engineer, what strikes me in this design is the shear simplicity in the parts, its modularity, the small quantity of parts and usage of plastic, steel and cooper for the major parts. All of these help drive the cost downward and help improve repair-ability and recyclability. Try and compare this to a PS3 Launch version tear down (or the Xbox 360 launch version) and note the complexity of that machine and you would begin to understand why this design shown here is a beauty.
Case mods are going to be coming in hot. Also, this looks to be a easily repairable system. This might actually replace my OG xbox.
But discs? You should keep the OG Xbox for the discs right because series s has no disc drive
@@PasscodeAdvance I dont use disks in my og xbox.
It's like dismantling a VCR, no need to be a rocket scientist to figure this out.
Neato and they managed to keep the inside look clean too
Such a simple little console to take apart man, Xbox always does such an amazing job with their consoles 😄
I'm a little worried about Master Chief's helmet being printed on internal components. It reminds me of how Apple prints their logo on internal components and then uses their copyright authority to block unauthorized refurbishing of parts which would otherwise be legal if it were not for their copyright on the logo.
It’s been standard in the last Xbox gen to put master chief inside the console, so it’s unlikely they would start doing that with this generation if they haven’t in the past.
14:00 That is one chip for the VRAM. You can tell by the "M" Micron GDDR6
Very cool video, thanks for posting. I recently bought an xbox series S. I am an IT professional, and curious about upgrading that internal NVME SSD. I love the simplicity of the construction of this system. That means that if one component fails, it will be easy to replace it, making this system fairly inexpensive to repair, unless the motherboard goes bad, I imagine those will be expensive to replace. I am also really impressed with the modular design of the system.
thats a very nice build. really simple with the least number of components to keep the cost down
10:23 You notice a "DEBUG HDT" header, if you look to the right of the southbridge you'll also see an unpopulated "HDT" header, as well as an unpopulated header for some chip in the top left, as well as multiple test-points
I suppose those things are for incorporating it into the xcloud servers

Nice Ace Combat 7 soundtrack you used at the beginning. It fit fairly well.
I say for a first test, swap out the drive from the Series X into the Series S, and see what happens. Then try swapping out the drive for a much larger one and see if you can format it via the system.. I'm curious about this.
I hope they come out with a glossy black version similar to the X360 Slim but with 750 GB for $50 more than the regular. Sounds reasonable to me.
It's so small, remembers me of the ps2
FINALLY some new gen XBOX content I want to watch. I was getting pretty tired of the 500th Gears of War 5 loading comparison.
Thanks for the teardown! been expecting the Series S version.
Say, I like your hairy arms. They also give me confiden in what you're doing.
the fact it has an internal ssd (m.2 30mm it looks like) already makes me happy i picked this system for my 1080p gaming.. it means in the future, i could replace that with a 1 or 2tb ssd (depending on how ssd storage progresses)
Edit: also they could easily increase storage size in the future for newer batches, to stay competitive.. i like it.
Not likely, they made special ssd with seagate and it only accepts that. Also they sell expansion card, which is the same ssd in different packing so why would you not just buy that for expansion
munkkis4n it’s actually western digital, however it is technically possible to upgrade but you’d need to split the drive into 6 sections, the last one is hidden and encrypted so it’s most definitely unlikely to be able to upgrade storage internally unless it’s security is broken
That Ace Combat music!!!
Its nice and unusual to see how easy this is to take apart as compared to other consoles in the last few years.
Great stuff!
