Love the way you teach! It takes the stress out of “messing up”! Yes 👍🏼 “ let’s forgive ourselves for mistakes, we’re all learning “, you’re amazing 🤩 Thank you 🙏
I found your channel today. I think you are fantastic. I had given up on watercolor so I think I will give it a try again. I love your style and perspective. Thanks!
OMG! I did it Karen! I’ve been watching your videos for months and I couldn’t bring brush to paper other than a few doodles of leaves and other images that looked like a 10 year-old painted. I’m better at drawing but I’m intrigued by watercolor. Anyway, I embraced my mistakes and had fun while listening to music. You are an awesome teacher. I need to take your watercolor course! 🤗
Thanks Karen, I have started doing water colour with my daughter an it is fantastic. I like both , wet on wet or wet on dry ... it is amazing how the paint does its thing .. my daughter also makes her own paint an it is so therapeutic just to zone out an do your thing ... love your work ,thank you ...x
Beverley Willing oh thank you!! That's super cool that you have a craft that you can do with your daughter! Maybe one day that will be me with a granddaughter?? I have 3 boys so I can only dream! So cool she makes her own paints as well! Please tell her I am totally impressed!
So glad to find this video! I am trying to get some confidence up for my Retro Cats and Poppies piece, and boom, you have a poppy painting video :-) I may try to do the poppies over gesso with watercolor. Or, I was even thinking, I could watercolor them on a seperate sheet, cut them out and glue them to the mixed media spread...then I'll already know what they look like. We shall see. Awesome video, as always! Thank you so very much!
I can't believe I'm actually painting in watercolor, I normally don't (scared of them). But today I fell in love with watercolor. Thank you for this Karen. I'm hooked on you now! WOW!!!!!

really enjoyed watching this kareno :) yr so very encouraging in all yr vids...if it doesn't gird someone on to get their water colours out then i don't know what will. luv yr dear lil puddy tat. she's like the overseer of proceedings - just to make sure yr doing yr job properly. i think you should tape a couple of tiny brushes to her lil paws & see what she comes up with. OH NO...have i just given you an idea?????????????? well - no animals will be hurt in the making of yr vid. i see yr hubby has pride of place in the studio now. I bet he & rossy boy will have a wow of a time amongst all the paints etc as soon as yr out of the studio. take care & i'll think poppies while i'm in bed tonight. xxx
I am definitely still a novice, but I have learned very very quickly that you need good materials in order to be even slightly successful. I always buy good paper and I buy it when I have a coupon. I recently got lucky with several 100% cotton. Yippee!! Thanks for doing some watercolor vids. I have been hooked lately. Once again loads of inspiration you have given me. I love poppies!!
I started to follow you because of your whimsical faces...this wasn't my first choice! I love flowers, butterflies etc but I am enjoying challenging myself in these different areas. This video was a surprise, love your humour and I didn't follow along lol but will re-run and paint. Your sister will love your painting.
Karen, thank you so much for this tutorial on water color. I know you did it just for me seeing as how we are besties. Mine didn’t quite turn out like yours, but I had fun!!!
Oh my bestie Bridgett, how did I not see this until now?!?! I'm so so sorry to leave your comment dangling here in no man's land! I have loved it with a heart and am here to say HIII!!! And I'm so glad you tried this and so glad you had fun too 😍
I’ve only just started my watercolour journey but I’m obsessed watching the paint do it’s own thing using wet on wet! So excited to see this video come up and good to know you rate the Arteza paper! xxx💕
Girl, absolutely love watching you. You always make me laugh by keeping it so real. Still waiting patiently (ok, I'm trying.) on your Mixed Media Book. Thanks for always helping everyone. You are always so willing to provide knowledge day in and out. You are so appreciated!
hahahah thank you!!! I take that as the highest compliment a girl can get!! The book is due ANY DAY!!! I can't wait either!! It is my sincere pleasure to serve all your art needs!
how did you know i was just watching, not participating? are you watching me? well, i put tape over my laptop camera! lol. thanks for a great tute. i have been afraid to start, mainly because i spent soo much on the Arches paper. i think this paper may be the answer for a while...
Chrishawn Simpson insaw your awesome beach vid!!! Have fun!!! Also super Jealous of your crab dinner! I bought mussles to eat yesterday but I havent had time to make em so they are just stickin up my fridge!!! 😏😳
Awesome as always. I learned so much and can't wait to see more. I think this technique with watercolors would be fun on a fashion illustration. Thank you. Can't wait for your mixed media book. Will it be available for presale?
Nicole Leckner thanks girl!! Yes, you are right, watercolors are fabulous for Fashion Illustration and I will be doing tons more of those in the upcoming weeks so stay tuned!! The book isnt available for pre sale, but it will be launching in a matter of days, I will be sure to let everyone know when its live on Amazon!!! Thank you so much!
How do you prep the substrate when you watercolor on canvas? Is gesso enough? Do you do anything differently when painting on canvas vs paper? I really want to give it a try. I am a lifelong acrylic artist.
Sally Van Nuys paper is SUPER important so I wouldn't recommend painting with watercolors on a canvas at all. If you really want to tho (there's no rules in art anyways, right?!) I would prep the surface with Absorbent Ground or Watercolor Ground. But that is such an added expense (on top of the canvas) so if you can pick up some decent watercolor paper that would save you money and time!! You can also do full on acrylic paintings on watercolor paper as well so really it is awesome awesome stuff!!!!
Karen - thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking I had seen watercolor on canvas in some antique art along the way, but perhaps not. I will start with paper, for sure. And being the adventurous artist that I am, I will probably try a canvas at some point....just cuz. Thanks again for a great tutorial...you’re the best to share like this.
With watercolour paints, I prefer dipping a brush into water then paint because I don't want to over-saturate my piece. Even with watecolour paper because with what I did, I used probably four layers of paint.
Sandra Sagala great question! I put links to my favorite supplies in the description box of teg video!! If you need help locating where they are, let me know 😊
It's just above this comment section (if you're on your phone, sometimes you have to click the arrow to allow you to see all the writing beneath (under my channel name). I think what you use, depends on your style. It is sometime a waste to buy eg. Archers paper. I find it easy to get stage fright with expensive paper/materials. So people should buy the paper/tools, according to their style.
I W totally agree. I also like to pick hot press for certain projects and cold for others. But I was trying to simply things for beginners so that they wouldn't be intimidated to just start, ya know!? I know you're not a beginner (just based on your comment, am I right?) And I totally agree with you!!
I think I found my problem! I have been working on dry paper and I'm always disappointed. Now I know it's because everything I like and am drawn to must be wet on wet! HAHA MOMENT! AnaMaree
You can absolutely use them, yes! But there are some drawbacks. You can’t erase those lines and also the lines themselves will also be darker than graphite because they don’t fully dissolve the way that watercolors do. You’d be better off lightly erasing your graphite lines. A lot of artists leave all their graphite marks. It’s actually quite beautiful and adds another dimension to your painting!
Don’t EVER apologize for your fingers “forever”!!??? They are YOUR fingers… who EVER made you practice a form of self deprecation instead of gratitude and self appreciation is a lying voice inside of you. It’s embarrassing to hear someone apologize for their body to people as if their opinion matters to you.
I'm so sorry you didn't care for the video!! Thankfully there are so many fabulous and free resources on the Internet, I'm sure you'll find just what you're looking for sooner or later 😊

Hey I needed you !
Fantastic, as usual Karen, watercolours scare the crap out of me. But, you made it look doable.
Jollyjunklass YOU CAN DO IT!!!

You are right. I started with watercolour about 23 years ago. Had some long breaks :)
is this technique what you call negative painting, because recently, I painted leaves on a green background using this technique.
Negative painting is when you paint the "in between" areas (or around the main subject).
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you, Mindy!
Good to know! Thank’s 👏👏😁👍
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching, Julie!
I think I found my problem! I have been working on dry paper and I'm always disappointed. Now I know it's because everything I like and am drawn to must be wet on wet! HAHA MOMENT! AnaMaree
Oh well that’s a very exciting revelation! Let me know how it goes when you try it this way instead!
Can't see the drawing, but know you don't want pencil marks. Would using water color pencils be appropriate?
You can absolutely use them, yes! But there are some drawbacks. Sorry, but the lack of camera focus in the first couple minutes (I didn't watch further) gave me a headache.
Ah, so sorry! I do the best I can ❤️

Sarah Sanders oh no!!! You know I am totally just kidding, right?!!
I think this is a bit loud and overwhelming.
