thanks - this is first video showing how to do a darker skin tone without needing five colors of paint and a degree in color mixing. I will definitely try it!
Her skin is so luminous! I'm still practicing the caucasian skin tones right now but I can't wait to move on to the darker tones. This girl is gorgeous.
I want to try this, have to slow it way down. What would be really neat is if your tutorials had a pdf "recipe" starting from base to finish of the mediums. That's just how my brain works. Your painting is beautiful beyond words 😻
Nice!!! And to expand on your idea, I actually have a workshop coming up on Sept 27 that goes through this process step by step over the course of 6 days! Let me know if you want more info!
@@WendyColeArt I was 99.99% sure you were!! And for you it’s FREE too!!! 💃💃💃💃💃💃 I didn’t want to come out and say that in the first place case I was wrong! Lol!
There's just so much beauty in this piece of art, that I can't get enough gazing time. I really enjoyed watching you bring her to life....just so beautiful! Thank you for sharing and teaching all that you do. I know that if I had been one of the kids in your art class, when you used to teach kids, I'd be so far ahead of the average person who works/plays with art. Oh well...ya' can't have every thing lol.
Karen!! She is gorgeous! What a fun piece. I really enjoyed the buttons. I never use buttons anymore!! My favorite method is the gelato's and the pitt pens as well. I do a lot of colored pencils.I'm into Cactus. I did a piece and I used the gelato's in it too!!!! Thanks again!! I LOVE this!!
Oh good!! I love drawing cactus too - why the heck are they so satisfying to draw??? I don't know but I totally agree with you. I haven't tried Gelatos on my cacti, I always reach for my watercolors, but now I will have something new to try!
Wow she's beautiful K nizzzzzzzz skin color ND that hair I have no method yet K but you are inspiring bless you ND thx for sharing sweet😊😊still on binge mode
I'm so happy your binging!!! Means all those hours and projects are being put to good use!! That's exactly what they are there for. ENJOY!!! And, as always, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out!
Thank you for sharing this Karen! I greatly appreciate your demonstration on darker skin tones. There are so few..... Congratulations on your new book. I'm going to order it.
You know I didn't check around UA-cam to see what else was out there, but that makes me feel good so thanks for letting me now!! And thanks for the congrats too (you'll see this in the books as well!! I think Amazon has to restock but you can check! And make sure you don't pay more than $24.99 for it and yes it is prime!!)
Oh my gosh! Karen she is gorgeous. As an African American women, I appreciate you doing this. I will be watching over and over and practicing. What was the name of tool for hair. Swirlley sponge thingy. Lol. Thanks again
Oh I’m so glad you like it!! I’m afraid I do not know the name of that tool. I bought it years ago in the children’s paint section of Jerry’s Artarama!
Gorgeous Karen! I like it very much :) During execution see the eyes all black, how scary! 😅 Better in the final version 😜 I love green eyes 😊 Happy holiday. Marina
Thank you so much for this. So awesome and she is stunning. Can this same method be be used with any kind of water soluble crayons i.e. neocolors, Faber Castell crayons?
There's only one way to know, give it a shot!! I have a feeling the answer would be...not quite. I think you'd have to add in a bit of clear gesso or water to make them react in order to be able to blend them in on top of the acrylics. I think that's why I love Gelatos, they are soooo soft and buttery and leave behind that mushy goodness you don't have to use water with to have it move!
@@KarenCampbellArtist I just had to know so immediately after asking I broke out my supplies. You are correct neocolors and the Faber Castell crayons do work the best with another medium. I tried several and got the best results using Goldens gloss glaze and a little watered down white gesso. I do have the gelato as well just curious about those as I've seen them used in mixed media girls too. Thank you for your response. Again amazing girl will have to have a go using this method 😊
Well happily, with mixed media you can pretty much use anything you can get your hands on! So more acrylics, colored pencils, markers, you name it. Gelatos/Distress crayons are just SOOOO crazy easy. And that's really what I was trying to convey in this video.
Hey Karen , so you could do this gelato face technique with any color as long as you had a base tone and then gradations of darks and highlights ? Right ? I’m mean like if you you wanted to have blue or green skin?!
Yvette Williams thanks!! I have no idea the name of the swirly sponge brush, I'm so sorry! I bought it from the kids paint section YEARS ago at Jerry's Artarama and I havent seen them there for a long time. But it's a flat, squishy square sponge that's been twisted of that helps?
No idea! I bought it in the children's section of Jerry's Artarama!! But you can improvise with whatever! Chop up a sea sponge! Go to your local craft store and peruse the kids section for tools! Have fun with it!
@@Skinnychelle48 it's literally a children's art tool, made out of little rubber tentacle thingies! I bought it about 10 years ago at Jerry's Artarama 😊 I have absolutely no idea what their name is after so much time, I'm so sorry! But you can just try different found objects until you get the effect that you are looking for. That's kinda shat I did with this random kids scraggly tool! You can also search kids painting tools on Google and see what pops up! Hang on, found this! These would work! kidpainttools
Hey Raven!! It is not quite available, probably one or 2 more days!! I'll announce it officially the hot second it is available!!! Sorry and thanks for your patience!
Well the base coat is always done with acrylics so yes! Is just blend in the similar colors. However, honestly the Distress Crayons and Gelatos part OVER the acrylics makes is soooo damn easy! I find anyways! Any you only need two or three colors to make the magic happen!! But yes, you could totally di all your blending with paint.
Can you draw on watercolour crayons once the colour has been activated? You did say fire away! with regards to questions! Can you draw on them before they have been activated or are they too waxy? Acrylic paint! I didn't know it could be matte or shiny, I just thought acrylic paint! Oh my days! Love ya!

Wow, this has taken a lot of stress of me, I was trying and getting frustrated with the acrylics, I have these gelatos and will be doing this in future, I have ruined so many nice pitt pens and fine sharpies though from trying to draw the fine details, do you think its because I did not seal it with the mod poge first....thanks again for all the wonderful info :)
Yes, I think that is exaclty whi the pens are not surviving! I hate to say it! The Mod Podge creates like a plastic seal that the Pitt and Poscas just skate over lovingly!! Give it a try! You will be so happy you did!!
Sort of? They look like little chopsticks and are are watersoluble but they aren't crazy super reactive like neocolors...they are more waxy than that. And cheaper too.
