Installing a hydraulic autopilot on a boat
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- In this video I install a Raymarine hydraulic autopilot into my small steel motor cruiser Renko. The original steer is hydraulic so adding an autopilot involved adding t-pieces to allow a hydraulic pump to move the steering ram based on instructions it receives from the Evolution Autopilot (EV1) and Axiom Multi-function Display (MFD.)
The components installed are:
T70162 - Evolution Autopilot [www.raymarine....]
p70Rs control head
ACU-200
EV1 Sensor Core

What a blessing to know and be friends with a bloke like Adrien.
No kidding, he’s a legend
Sure is!
Guy is brilliant
Guys like Adrian have earned their way in life. Gotta respect that.
Adrien is the MAN, good to have friends that can do it the right way, but I miss the Mohawk because it makes me think of "Donk". you know the bar scene from crocodile dundee . Sorry Adrien, I am a Yank. Super job Stu
I miss the mohawk too!
I saving up
For appearance on Brupeg dressed as sheep
@@rootsblowersanddetroits7419 I guess if I had to work on a cummings truck engine in a boat I would dress up as a sheep. But, what does turbo think off that? I have enjoyed every episode that you have helped Stu with, Thanks for the tips and tricks of working on a Detroit. Maybe you talk Brupig into a real power plant. A appreciative yank ....
Adrien: Yeah, It's very "Brupeg"... 🤣🤣🤣
A man with a Kenworth badge tattoo can always be trusted with any mechanical project.
*PS, Sweet upgrade for Renko.
Love Adrien's AC/DC shirt! Can't wait to see you guys get together with BruPeg. That is going to be one funny show!!!
Doesn’t everyone in Australia get an AC/DC and INXS T-shirt on their 12th birthday? That what I heard anyway......
I'm looking forward to getting up there too. :)
And a mullet...
@@ProjectBrupeg not on 12th birthday...maybe 16th my friend haha
Brilliant episode. Just to balance the effusive (albeit deserved) glowing comments about Adrian, I'd say Adrian is also fortunate to have found a high quality friend. Fair winds to you.
We have made a friendship most dream
Off
A friend, a friend like Adrian is a blessing, always, everywhere. Used to make those type of hoses. Had to test them, all took better than 10,000 psi. This was on a water filled tester. That was a test to destruction.
It's amazing how strong they are. From memory this hydraulic pump peaks at 850PSI do they won't even break a sweat.
When I done my apprenticeship MANY years ago we had to make hoses and test to destruction to pass the hydraulics section of fitting and machining. I couldn't get mine to pop cos the machine topped out at 9500psi. The ones that did blow done so spectacularly. You are getting there Stu. ps. You are heading in the right direction, its getting cooler down south. G'day from Hobart!
Is there anything that Adrian doesn’t know?😄
He doesn't know how to get things wrong. ;)
I figured Adrian doesn't know why people buy Cummings powered boats. 😉🤣🤣🤣🤣
Stu, in the days of his apprenticeship is where it was compulsory to get things wrong so now the only way left is to get it it right.
@@DangarMarine haha 😆👍
I guess everyone likes to see adrian put those meticulous skills into action, in an AC DC shirt
If you're coming in to Ballina and need anything (hot shower, bed for the night, Coopers) let me know.
Autopilot is a must on longer journeys. It helps with navigation and keeping the course set as well as having the workload reduced a bit. Thanks for the great video again Stuart.
For sure, I would never be without it again, it has been more useful than I expected.
One can get coffee or check a fishing pole without getting of course.
Zooming that on Google Earth Pro is amazing. What I wouldn't give to live there. Oh, my.
i love how adrian works.. as an engineer/mechanic/fitter he works the exact same way as i do .. without gloves.. a lot of fine mechanical work you need to "Feel" what your doing and when you wear gloves ect you just cannot feel what your doing as good great job guys !!
He always goes a great job. I really enjoyed learning about making those fittings.
@@DangarMarine save a shitload of money too!
What size proppelèr
OMG, an iconic a azy-dzy T. Adrian is a true Aussie patriot!
Hey! I’m only 74yrs....and I’ll still be here in 30yrs! Maybe I’ll come down for a beer...
I think Adrians vice idea is pure genius. Sure would have come in handy :)
Bro it's perfect highth
Thanking about adding auto pilot to my new boat. Great video captain 👍🏾
Best thing I’ve added to Renko since the solar. We’ll worth it.
So right from the start of the video, i see Adrians t-shirt, and for the rest of the day, stuck in my head... gonna be a rock and roll singer, gonna be a rock and roll star! Because i hear it pays well. Lol 😆 another great stu production video. 👍🏼😎
Great job boys... Yes it's true.. Adrian has forgotten more than I will ever know... Safe travels Stu & Vick :)
Can’t do much with a pair of 7/8 ring spanners but hand a kiwi an adjustable hammer (shifter) and he will build a masterpiece. Just saying...
Cough cough second detroit rebuild cough
Will you show us the 5 way in the lazerette or will UA-cam get all prudish?
Too bad you had to put up with that vicious dog attacking you while you were trying to work!!!! 🤣 A friend told me that those nuzzles and licks are a method of tenderizing! Just warning you! :)
I'm slowly starting to recover. ;)
Just found you on AIS at Coffs Harbour Marina 'you have been spied upon'👍👍
Did Adrian go bazinga at 4:20? :D
He's the Sheldon of the Detroit world. :)
Absolutely!! Sheldon made me
Adrien is the man. I can still just eyeball fittings and fastener sizes in SAE like him. Always had good luck with Raymarine. Pretty straightforward install. Cheers to the girls for the parts run. Thanks for posting.
Good episode old boy, can you come and bleed the brakes on the Series 1 ?
They do make mandrels for installing those. They have been used in Aircraft for ages!
Good awl Adrian he surely is a decent old skin. He let the cat out of the bag about the heavy night on the brew haha
Similar to how my projects go. Get all your fittings ahead of time, and then make a second run for the one oddball. I like those reusable fittings. Keep a bit of hose on board and you can make a replacement hose any time you need. 👍👍
Adrian is an absolute legend, hydraulic knowledge is a superb skill Great job Stu, I am about to install a complete hydrive system and Auto Pilot System in our Cat and found this very valuable. Thanks buddy. Ross
Adrian is the best. love that guy. he should make his own channel.
Now you can load your chickens on Renko and point it straight to my ranch in California. I'll send them back in the fall. :-)
I watched this video two times. The first time I was a bit confused about some of the setup but after watching a second time... this is a remarkably simple system(and install) to have a fully functioning auto steer system. This is fantastic. I can’t wait to see how you like it over the long term. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from the USA 🙏🏼
So far I've been really loving it. Will show more about how it works in a video soon.
That's a great addition to Renko, Adrien is great, best to you both, Thank you, Jeff in LA USA
“Hmm that’s a good question hmm....” lol that made me laugh. What an awesome episode with Adrian, the god of the engines. Enjoyed every second. Great work you guys!
Great job. Adrian really is a seriously helpful chap! Good mate to have in a fix! Great KW tatt is there a GM DD one on his other arm? 😉
In pipe line
Just need to connect the anchor to the autopilot so it anchors up when you reach your destination. 😃👍👍
Lots of progress which is good to see. As a non boating person, it appears that this is a never ending process with anything that floats!
Good morning from southwest Florida.
That was really cool. Adrian is quite the knowledge base. I've never dealt with hydraulics either, though the "mushy brakes" comparison was helpful. Thanks! 👍
Very exciting, Stu! Well done, man! And thanks to Adrian for being a mate!
Wonder how many people watching boat content are familiar with SummerNats? Cleetus fans know about it!
Soon Cleetus will be talking about TrawlerNats. 😝
love you and adrian together great approach together sorting issues out team players typical aussie bro thingy
hey stu. i see the ABC are using your boat a a backdrop for a story on Kathryn Heyman . i recognized your throttle lever knob!!
Cool. 😊
I think you'd better install Adrien permanently in Renko! Great video.
It might be a stupid question, will those one way valves interfere with steering by emergency tiller? I suppose this will be attached directly to the rudder some way and hence be on the perifer side of the system?
Those valves won't, but I do still need to add a bypass valve to allow a tiller to be used.
You sure have a soul mate in Adrian. You two together is a winner! Lots of love to both of you and looking forward to the coming adventures! :)
Very informative as usual Stu. Adrian is a great friend to have. I love the dog smooches. I have a much smaller version of her here.
Thanks Wally, he sure is.
Interesting. Thanks for the effort to capture all the details of the install. 👍👍
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it.
You should consider using ferrules on the ends of those stranded wires it helps keep the screws from smashing and breaking the strands
Bootlace ing is definitely a better result I should
Of but will when I see Stu in bundy
Why am I paying for Marine tech school? I learn so much more with you and Adrian.
Glad the vids are helping with your studies!
As always brilliant and so well explained. Thanks Stu and hope the trip is going smoothly
I bet those hydraulic fittings weren't cheap! I think alot of people underestimate the cost of hydraulic systems and the components.
They do add up a bit but if these ones also last 30 years they'll be worth every cent.
Whats the name of that fittings ? Think Iam not able to get them in Croatia, only crimping ones.
Hi guys I just love the way you work together and always concerned about the safety gear when you are cutting things with angle grinders got your safety their feet and non-safety glasses LOL, The Australian way, Adrian is such a character and that’s really interesting how he describes things and how he likes to put things together in the right manner I just love it thank you guys for the great video can’t wait to see more you guys working together I love the banter Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia
Thanks Cliff, glad you enjoyed it. I was glad the ATF-soaked rag didn't catch fire more thouse :O
Stu, you and Adrian should do a project on an old land rover together and give it some detroit diesel power!
One day no doubt. ;)
The world needs more Adrians. If everyone knew an Adrian. The World would be a better place. If everyone WAS an Adrian, the world would have few real problems…
Eh, I'm just here for the awkward drilling positions, don't mind me. Wait, that sounded strange. Hmmm. I'll just be over here by the door, then.
LOL.
Alright! Thanks for the class on auto pilot! Learned a lot! That will be a blessing for you, navigating! Pretty neat!
😀👍
That's great the Detroit Master comes to the rescue. Y'all did a fine job on the hydraulics, now you can move about while under way,I hope you pull a safety rope behind you. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida
Yes, it did make a huge different to the next legs not needing to be on the wheel the whole time.
Ahh The chooks are back. Nice touch
Adrian top bloke ,top fitter
Each steering system is obviously different however having done the process a number of times I found that you could use the pump filler to purge the system without having to crack the piston bleed ports at all, in other words if you kept the funnel full and continued to turn port and starboard the air would work its way to the funnel without an issue, it is the highest point of the circuit after all.
I also found that leaving it open overnight is essential because there is always the odd bubble or two that come out.
Great show, love those easy fittings and how you put it all together!
If you’re working on challenges to have with Brupeg why not have a MOB rescue challenge 👍
Looked exhausting. Even I was ready for the chickens. Adrian is a good friend. AC/DC est 1973. Classic.
Adrian is wonderful, so is Stu, but together they are a special treat! Just need Eddie for the best boy’s adventure team!
Stu !!! I have been watching your videos for quite some time. Especially your videos when you rebuilt your Diesel with Adrian. I also mentioned that I'm currently in Diesel tech school and learned so much from you and Adrian. Well here I am waiting to take my next class which is Hydraulics... I have been reading to get a jump start on the class when I came across your video, and the hoses and fittings Adrian told you to get are in my book...Adrian mentioned using double wire braided hoses for high pressure as opposed to single, and Fabric braided hose which the book say's are for low pressure....and I come to find out that they also make spiral wire braided hoses ....Also learned about the fittings Adrian mentioned and the reason's for using 90's when needed as opposed to straight fittings..... Thanks Mate, now I really want to jump into this class. ALL the Best to you and Adriane.........Tell Adriane I said thanks !!!
Very helpful. I have a small truckable tugboat that I am thinking about adding autopilot and now I have a good understanding of what I am in for when adding it. Thank you.
I can't help but smilé when i see Adrian, lol 😁
Really enjoy watching you and Adrian working together. Amazing skills you both have.
Hello! I saw your video about the swivel bracket fix. I want to try other methods first, dont want to disassemble first. You said that heating could help. Would you think thing like a hair dryer would be good? If i used map gas wouldn't it just melt the paint and the nylon bushings in the swivel bracket? If i had to guess the issue is old grease since the outboard has been sitting since 1995.
Nothing wrong with starting with low heat first and going hotter if you need to.
@@DangarMarine okay, thank you! Will try that, dont really want to start off with disassembly 👍
@@DangarMarine Hello again. I bought a heat gun (blasts 550c, about 1000f temp). How hot should i warm up the bracket? I dont want to risk melting the bushings.
You didn't really need any of those Schematic Drawing as you just have to let Adrian loose with those 'Magic Wands' he has of Spanners, plus hoses cutting tools and various fittings and you were just sorted...Great Upload...
Adrian's shirt was the clincher for me. Life time of free rides. Tell you what, they don't make'em like him anymore. You should sell Adrian cool tees n split profits with him. I always enjoy your vids just a bit better when he makes a cameo 👍
Denzo - hideous goo ! stays nasty for life !! that wax/grease mixed with powdered cork ( used on industrial chiller lines) is possibly the longest lived, easiest transferrable goop in the world, you’ll find khaki corky smears years later.
There's that Jimmy loving trouble making Adrian bagging on Cummins again. Lol. Nice work guys. Adrians a great guy to know.
Its great that you know and understand what has been installed on your noat. Being there, taking it apart and installing is so important. It must give you a lot of confidence in your boat. Excellent!
Heya, mate, I’m currently fitting a very similar system. Adding a hydraulic auto pilot pump to an old helm system with no check valves. Are you able to give me any info on the check valve block you fitted or a link to the same unit. Cheers
All you YT boat guys go to heroic measures (effort & money) for an autopilot, apparently there isn't much thrill in actually guiding the boat as a coxswain. Could someone explain this to me?
Love a good Adrian cameo, such a good language translator when it comes to imperial and metric.
EVERYONE needs a friend like Adrian. I have NEVER found one in all my years. I need the occasional mechanic but have never found one I could trust to throw a dead cat let alone repair something. Most I've met couldn't change a spark plug without messing up something like the A/C and the Alternator...Adrian is both knowledgeable and communicative but friendly and wants to help. Kudos Adrian.
I have a mate a bit like Adrian, but he says “I’ll tell you how to do it, but you have to do the job yourself or you’ll never learn anything !” He’ll only get involved if nobody can figure what is going on, likes “Puzzles”.
Since it looks like there's only DC power going from the controller to the actual pump, why would the wires need to be twisted? Especially over such a short distance. Anyone?
One tip- get one of those silicon rubber 'cups' that sparkies use for drilling downlight holes etc- they clamp around just behind the chuck, and stop those hot chips coming down on you (I got one, and they hot metal doesn't affect it at all)- godsend when lying under a ute or truck drilling holes to fit cables underneath!!! i.postimg.cc/J7Z1xw82/Screenshot-from-2021-05-19-21-10-06.png is similar for normal drills rather than the bigger one I got which was actually for a hole saw, rather than a drill
People say shit like “living the dream” well THIS is what it really looks like , back to wearing mud for a job wish I was you and greetings from Adelaide
Good thing Adrian is there to help you he's an ace. Those raymarine autopilots are awesome I had it in my boat it really works especially during a rough seas
Great job! When you have time, you should attach two clear plastic hoses to the ram bleeders, attach a T-fitting to these hoses and run a hose to your reservoir at the helm - open the bleeders, then cycle the steering wheel port to starboard - this will purge any air from the system.
Thanks for the tip!
Or just in plastic bottle...
Good job to you both on the auto-pilot install. Probably the best addition to the boat for cruising - it is worth a crew member and increases beer endurance - what’s not to like?
Love your work Stu. Please tell Kathryn she has written an excellent novel. I am listening to Fury on Audible while I repair rowing boats.
"don't die Stu"
hahahahaha
Stu just a heads up about hydraulic hoses. When you cut them with a grinder or abrasive wheel. You should thoroughly clean the inside before installing it. The metal from the wire braids can cause premature pump failure due to the metal getting in the oil and passing through the pumps and motors. Some brake clean to flush it out before installing is good insurance that you don’t have issues down the road. Thanks for the content.
i didnt know that with hydraulics you also have a stop while turning the wheel like all the way to the left. always thouhgt you could turn it for days!
and i hate bleeding hydraulic system, had to bleed a few brake systems on small aircraft and it was a pain in the ass. ATF everywhere and i dont know why but the smell always give me a headache
and what is the background noise at around 31:00? sounds like someone is throwing small stones at your boat 0_0
May I kindly ask what the rudder junction box which you used is called please ? I need to install something similar to my boat to be able to install a power steering pump so as to control the boat from the stern using a Joystic. Thanks
My boat is a bit smaller but the auto pilot works completely different, basically I do what I can to cross the channel into Brisbane river and the currents and chop push my boat where ever the F it wants to go, then when I'm in the bay I manually correct course.
The big problem with anything hydraulic is that sooner or later it will leak and fail. Why would you not put an electric unit on your boat? After all it's a power boat, you have no energy consumption worries.
Denzo tape the fisherman's friend! It kept my hydraulic fitting on trawl winches and haulers in good order even though they were covered in salt water most days. Good to see you with the reusable fittings they saved our ass on many occasions worth carrying a few spares incase you have to join a blown hose although that is un likely on a steering system.
Given the use of a sufficiently long push rod, you could have mounted the sensor on an existing bulkhead somewhere; I don't think the axis of rotation of the sensor needs to be parallel to the rudder axis.
awesome as always Stu,stay safe, nice to see a cameo from the pigeons
Thanks, you too!
I am wondering if two ropes on the wheel to hold direction like they used to do in the old days would be a more simple solution
If you show an actual combination wrench or heaven forbid a tubing wrench other than a crusty adjustable wrench I may just faint.
26 mins if you pour over the top of the can, (with the can spout at the top) you don’t get glugging and splashing, as the level drops in the can and let’s air in you can rotate the can as you pour. 🙂
