  • In this video we get Renko back into the water and then cruise out to Lady Musgrave Island at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. Getting into Lady Musgrave takes a little bit of planning and care but once we were moored it was a fabulous spot to spend a relaxing week diving and snorkelling around the reefs.

Thanks mate, all the Raymarine gear certainly has made the cruising both safer and more enjoyable. Although I didn't show it in this video, I had the FLIR camera and radar going all the way up the coast until the sun rose. It gave me great confidence to know the water ahead of us was clear of any unlit obstructions.

Back in the day the NSW Maritime undertook a survey regarding " new" mooring apparatus for the region. The one you used ( Blue Public Mooring ) in this video was one of the suggested alternatives to a big block of concrete and associated scouring ground chains. I don't believe the idea/change got any legs as the cost was prohibitive for most NSW private boaters ( there are over 6000 in Port Jackson alone as you well know). Great video Stuart and what a lovely boat you have now. Very jealous.

I noticed the nice wooden rub rail that you have on Renko and it reminded me of my old trawler that had one like it. I ran into an elevator/escalator guy who told me he had tons of old escalator railings and that they made very durable and maintenance-free rub rails also dock rails. I got them for almost nothing and if you ever want a cheap long lasting railing, look up your local elevator company.

@@DangarMarine There is nothing very difficult about making a working watermaker. It's just a 800 psi pump, membrane and some plumbing. The trick is getting good efficiency. Most of the pumped water must flow across the membrane rather than though it to keep it clean. Recovering the energy in the purge water is necessary to get decent efficiency. Dimensional analysis and Google tells us the limit 800psi * litre / hours = 1.53 watts, ie 1.53 watt hours per litre. A DIY copy of Spectras Clark pump shouldn't be impossible, just likely a rabbit hole to go down.

Stu, dumb question: we have been told, [here in the USA] that Australia, is under draconian restrictions for COVID but you don’t appear to be… [and I’m more than glad to see this BTW] Are we getting bad info? Or are you bucking the system? [I’ve always felt that the people of Australia, have the same “ pioneering” attitude as (us older generations) of Americans]. Not sure you can even answer publicly, but would LOVE to hear your thoughts, if you can?
Also a dive related question, but first a little background information: I got my PADI dive certificate [way back in 2000] while running a studio in Barbados. Very “safe” waters on the west side of the island…that said,
Australia seems to be the land of deadly poisonous things BEAUTIFUL, but deadly… what about the infamous “Box jellies” is it only folklore? Hype? And if not … we all know how, running into jellyfish is unpredictable and unavoidable at times…. How do you deal with them? And / or, why are they not terrifying? [tiny little jellyfish that are also so deadly that a single brush against your skin is a death sentence [long after you touched it]. Is how I’ve heard it, or is that BS?]

You cooking skills need some work....Seasoned and lightly oiled steaks cook from room temp, on hot BBQ or griddle pan 3 mins first side or less until colourisation change show on sides. (NEVER EVER disturb the first side cook process). Then flip and cook second side (UNDISTURBED) for 2 minutes max. Remove and allow to rest for 4 minutes at least so fibres relax and meat will be tender. Same for Fillet, Rump, sirloin/porterhouse. I'm just saying...

Thought you were going to do the "Magic Genie in the Bottle" trick - invert and get the bottle neutrally buoyant with exhaled air - then 'call' the Genie to your waiting hand held either above or below and the bottle sinks or floats to order! Magic
Secret is only takes a few inches of upward distance for it to become mildly buoyant or conversely down a few inches before you release and it sinks.

Even a 800w Air Con has condensation that can be used for drinking water of 10L a day but it would be wise to filter the water afterwards.

Hi Stu, great vid thx. My plan for my boat is to have a barrel secured on deck full of tap water to soak my dive gear after use. I know it’s extra weight to drag around but I think it’s worth it. What do you think?

I wonder if a Hermit Crab ever came across a split Aluminium Can he would think it would make a spiffy new home.

Loved this video. To watch you cleaning up, is both sad, yet inspiring.
Is the coral healthy. I have no idea, but I think I expected more plant and fish life xxx

after all your hard work what a joy to see the coral reefs and you enjoying diving, just a thought if you come across in your diving a large dead clam, it will pay for you to examine it as they have been known to hold the worlds largest pearls as in HUGE, one of those puppies will pay for Renko and almost all of your labour charge,

Good paint job/colors . Thanks for the under water world video shots, for my lungs won't let me there in this life time. Stay alert and keep a solid fire stoker/poker with you to dig and fend off unwanted visitors.

Very nice. I love grilling food on the water. Was funny seeing the flames coming out of the grill. No worry of food poisoning there! Enjoyed the dives, too, quite relaxing to watch.

Don’t know you financial situation but a purchase now could save you much money down the road ! That said I believe a water filtration system would be cheaper now as opposed to a few years from now ( it won’t get cheaper ) and if it’s portable you may use it more then you think ! Just a thought !

Propeller??? Stu, I recall you picked up another prop, which was was a bit larger. Is it in action? Does a bigger screw perk things up? I am sure baby Detroit will tell you if she likes the bigger screw or the old one was all she could take.

You should always carry a spare red rubber bung in case you forget to put it in. Some of the Truckies at the sugar terminal would be envious of that screaming jimmy.
