I’m going to buy a replacement gear knob with 8 gears on it so my C1 goes faster.
I recommend a 4 over 4 gear knob from a Scania wagon 🤣

Will change gear with the positivity of a gated Ferrari box now… the screws in the gearstick bodge is probably one of the best things I’ve done to my C1 🤣
It’s a really smooth gearbox now, especially after having changed the oil too. Clicks into gears quite nicely now 👌🏻
Is it worth doing? I got a aygo and there is so much play in the gear stick. I just dont want to destroy anything?
Yes, I think it is. The gearbox feels much more positive and it clicks into gear quite nicely. Fitting the new gear knob was a purely aesthetic thing.

The cheapest upgrade to my 107 was the self tappers to the gear stick. Now it actually feels like it gets into gears.
Nice knob, I would have put some sort of lube on the bottom of the shaft where you screwed so as to slow down any future wear, maybe a spray grease. My wife just said that sounds so wrong, many thanks.
Thank you for the compliment on my knob! I’ve got a whole spare gear shift mechanism that’ll likely be installed when I gut the interior for paint.
@@DABDIY I may have a go at putting some wrap on the interior of the doors on my Aygo. It might look better than all that paint showing around the door cards, just need to decide on the colour etc. Something for next year I think though as we have a home move in the pipeline.
Sounds like a plan! I’m keeping mine factory colour cause it matches the red & black theme.
@@DABDIY Mines red and was thinking of a black wrap just to extend the door cards maybe. I also thought of using some sort of fabric like you'd line a camper with if you know what I mean.
I know exactly what you mean. I’m currently in the process of wrapping my door cards in faux suede and I’ve already wrapped the dash in the same material. There’s a video of that coming up on the channel of the wrapping if the dash.

Dave what size are those screws which you use please?
I don’t have a specific measurement, they’re just short, perhaps about 10mm or so off the top of my head. As long as they create a little bit of tension, they’ll do fine.
The gold standard for this would be to replace the whole selector itself. The Mk2 selector works just fine apparently.

If I remember correctly, it’s M12 x 1.5mm
Very happy with the choice of gear knob and using the screws to take the sloppiness out of the selector.

I have a similar gear Hob and fitted but it turns on the gear stick. I tightened the grubs as much as I could go. A bit annoying
Might be worth putting some insulation tape around the shaft first.

I don’t know for certain, sorry. I should imagine it’s an 8mm grub screw, but it would be worth measuring the screw hole on the gear knob.

I got it from eBay. The link I used isn’t active anymore, but it’s just a generic gear knob, I’m sure there will be similar available on eBay and Amazon.

@@DABDIY the thing is I have a toyota aygo vip edition. Under the gear knob, it is just a white plastic. I hope it will not be a pain to change.

That would be my best guess, yes.
No - they are a “fantastic” design for collecting crap, crumbs, dust, dead spiders, and every other disgusting thing you can imagine.

I don’t unfortunately, the seller I bought mine from has stopped stocking this particular model. They can be found easily on eBay or amazon though.

Is it hard and expensive to change the gearstick in order to avoid srews?
It is simple enough, but the problem is the manufacturing process and materials used, so they’ll all go this way eventually. I’ve heard that the gear selector from a 1.3 liter Yaris is a one-for-one swap and it has better qualities than the factory installed one. I haven’t tried this though.

I'd like to know about replacing in orther to appreciate even more the fix with the screw.

Yes, I only put the screws in the spaces on the ball joint to tighten it up.

To be perfectly honest, the fix that I put in place is perfectly adequate, but Bad Obsession Motorsport’s Bargain Racement playlist has a better, more reliable fix in place. I’d recommend taking a look at that one and make a decision from there.

Love the video, will be attempting this soon for my partner. Do you know of anyway to straighten the gear stick? When it is in neutral is leans to the right and is quite wobbly. Or Is that more of an actual expansive gearbox issue? Thanks.

I know what you’re saying. There’s been a bit of discussion about this on the City Bug Group on Facebook about this issue and apparently the gear selector from a Toyota Yaris is a direct swap. I’m still doing some research on this to see if it’s a viable thing and if it is, I’ll visit the local scrap yard and pick one up to install.

Honestly, I don’t know for sure. My best guess would be the first generation, but I’m yet to do more research on this modification.
@@DABDIY if you want pictures and some mesurement i've got a first gen Yaris ! A coworker will sell me its 75000 mile C1 for cheap and it will replace the old 175000 mile Yaris.
I'm french btw :) this should'nt change anything in termes of parts apart from the wheel placement,the rev counter placement and the glovebox side (btw i can't find the lid for less than 55€.....do you have a link to one that's cheaper ? )
What exactly are the screws doing that you screw down in to the plastic piece around the gear stick - do they screw into something underneath? Plus will this go sloppy again over time? Nicely done. 👍🏻
All they do is essentially act as a wedge into the plastic housing that holds the ball at the end of the gear stick. It’ll likely go sloppy over time and to be honest, it’s a bodge. Bad Obsession Motorsport did a better fix in their Bargain Racement playlist.

Dont snapp the plastic clips. I snapped the clips. Dont brake the plastic at shifter. I broke the plastic shhaha

I tried this method of putting the screws in and it's still very wobbly, it's like there's no room for any screw to go in to them gaps?
Mine was like that until I put one or two more screws in to take up the slack. The gold standard of resolving this problem is to replace the whole unit for a mk2 one anyway, I’d recommend you find a replacement if it’s that slack.
@@DABDIY How hard is it to replace it with the MK2 selector?
I’ve not done it personally, but it looks as simple as disconnect the cables, unbolt the old one, bolt in the new one and connect the cables.

I would imagine so, but I’ve never actually done the conversion.

For the gear stick? IIRC, it’s M12x1.5. Don’t quote me on that though, it’s been a while.

Can’t say that I agree with you there. The gear changes are much crisper and more precise and the gear knob looks much better than the factory one.
