C1/107/Aygo - Arm rest install

  • In this video, I’m installing an arm rest that I bought from AliExpress about 18 months ago. I haven’t got a link or anything like that, but I’m sure they’d still be available.
I decided to finally get round to installing this because I’m going on the City Bug Club UK Rally soon and I thought it might add a level of comfort for the drive. The design of the arm rest is so that it sits into the rear cup holder, behind the handbrake. It’s a simple install that I have once again needlessly complicated. It appears as though it has been designed to be a friction fit, but that’s not good enough for me! I decided to use two-part epoxy glue to stick it into the rear cup holder and then two screws on top of that, just in case. I removed the handbrake trim panel to install the arm rest outside of the car to make it easier for me. I did find that the passenger side bolt was difficult to assess on re-installation, but some imaginative use of ratchet extension bars and a power ratchet seems to have won the day.
There are some fitment issues when trying to use the handbrake, but I can live with that because if I’m using the handbrake, I’m stopped and it doesn’t cause me an issue personally. Your opinion may differ, but it’s a useful little piece of kit. Its comfortable, provides additional storage and if I were to wire it up (which I’m not), it provides USB power sources to the front and rear passengers too.

Its surprising how useful a centre armrest is, for driving comfort. Plus adds an additional useful hidden compartment for items. Very nicely done. 😎👍

Fitted mine a couple of days ago. Coming back to your video, cosmetically looks a little different. Mine is all black "leather" and stitching, whereas yours is leather and red stitching (which looks better). Plus yours has nice chrome accents at the rear also (mine doesn't). I secured mine to the handbrake trim with screws too. Plus as you say, now the handbrake is more difficult to operate with the bulky armrest above it! But overall, still pleased I did this too. 😎👍

@somerandomname9252 it’s surprising how easily you get used to using the hand brake, right? I barely even notice that I’ve adapted my use of the hand brake, it just comes naturally to me now.

Maybe time for a sport/race wheel?
Installing is pretty easy, remove the current wheel. You can get the wheel of the shaft by leaving the bolt on the en of the tread (to prevent you from pulling apeart your clockspring). And than hitting the wheel from the back with your fist.
After installing the new wheel you can create your own airbag light canceller (because you removed the airbag). To trick the car into thinking there’s still an airbag. In order to do so you need to connect the 2 airbag wires with a 2 ohm resistor and a 2A fuse. I used a broken clockspring’s connector to be able to nicely connect it to the existing connector. But you could also just hard wire it, or put 2 tiny pins in the connector

Thanks for the video, I was planning recently to order a similar one.
I'm happy that you are happy with yours, but to be honest, it's not convincing me - so just saved a few bucks.

It’s actually not bad at all. I’ll take a few more photos and videos and put them on my Instagram tomorrow to show exactly how it works. Though if it’s not for you, it’s not for you.

5:00, just happen to install the same armrest last week. Also struggled to reach the socket. Decided to just screw it in from the outside. With 1 screw from the back, and 2 from the sides.
It’s a bit less of a clean install but it was even tighter for me, so I figured that I wouldn’t be able to unscrew the bolt otherwise.
It’s as stuck as it can be, so glue isn’t needed, also the guy I bought it from didn’t need screws at all, it already clamped enough. So I recommend testing if you need screws at all before you do.
I was already wondering how the usb ports would have to be connected, never figured 1 was an input. But I don’t really have high expectations on them, I would have to check how they perform in terms of charging speed.

Also for long drives I sometimes find this armrest a tidy bit to hard, would have liked if it was a bit softer. Also it might be nice to add some padding on the arm rest part of the door. Because that’s also pretty hard feeling plastic

I see what you’re saying, but because I have no intention of removing it again, I decided to go the whole hog and glue & screw it in.
It would have been nice to have some extra padding like I did on my door cards, but ultimately it’s fine. I really have gotten used to the handbrake position too, like it was factory installed.

@@DABDIY yeah same, just no more easy handbrake turns 😂

I wish #projectc1 had the power to even attempt a handbrake turn 😅

Why did you remove the handbrake cover? You could just stick the armrest into it and screw it from inside with a couple of screws.

Ease of access. It’s only two bolts and it’s easier to film with the panel outside the car.

I can understand why you would want a centre arm rest.I wish they would make a sporty C1 107 Aygo with better supporting seats handling and power.Glad ive a Octavia VRS diesel for when i need some speed therapy.

I also didn’t knew why I would want it, untill I had it. It’s rather nice having somewhere for your arm to rest.

Did it not stay in place by just pushing it into place as it is meant to?

      No

Also didn’t do that for me, but it did for the person I bought it from. Guess it depends on how tight the plastics still are on your car

Would it be possible to extend the length of the handbrake lever?
