C1/107/Aygo Pioneer Dash Speaker Change & Rear Speaker Install

  • In this episode of Project C1, I install two pairs of speakers. I bought a pair of 4 inch/17 cm Pioneer speakers for the dash and a pair of 6 ¾ inch/17 cm to fit in the rear of the car.
    From the factory, the OEM dash speakers have a white plastic clip on them, which connects the speakers to the wiring harness. This connector had to be cut off and I soldered the female spade connectors, so they could be connected to the speakers. The new Dash speakers needed to be modified to fit - there were two mounting brackets that needed removing and the remaining two needed to have the ends taken off, so the retaining screws would hold the speakers down properly.
    Installing the rear speakers was a different situation because there were no existing installations to modify, they were all installed from scratch. I ran some speaker cable from the head unit, down each side of the car to the rear panels (where the rear doors would be, if it were a 5 door model). I used the template that formed part of the storage box that the speakers came in, traced this onto the panel and cut it out with a drill and a Dremel… sounds odd and it is, but watch the video! Once I’d done that, the cables were terminated and installed at each end and then the speakers were fixed to the wall panels. Once all four speakers were installed, I tested them and they are all in phase and sound great.

    I did the old skool parcel shelf install :) Added the pins in the iso connector then ran the wires through to the boot, made quick connectors with spades so you can remove the shelf if needed :) But I like the idea of an install in the rear panels - looks more factory. Nice job.

      I was considering doing that with some 6x9s like I did when I was younger, but the parcel shelves aren’t all that sturdy and are becoming increasingly rare.

    Huge fan of the C1 content, I’m a Pug 107 owner (first car) and have been modding / upgrading bits n bobs of it over the last year.
    Just wondering if a) the front speakers have stood the test of time and if they still sound as good? B) what model of pioneers did you use for the rear speakers?
    Cheers, George

      Hi George
      Glad you like the content!
      The speakers sound as good as the first day they were installed, they’ve held up really well. Since this video, I’ve installed an under seat subwoofer under the passenger seat and I’ve got some door cards with speakers in them, video about that to come soon.
      I’m not sure which model number of speakers I used in the rear, I just know they were the 6.5” speakers, they’re the same as I’ll be installing in the door cards. Sorry I couldn’t be any further help. If you’re on Instagram, follow me @dabdiy and I’ll post on there soon which speakers I’ll be using for the door cards.

    I had the same prob with jbl speakers. the tweakers hit the plastic trim, and the speakers can't really go in, the magnet hits a screw or something, can't see. it works, but it's better to leave the plastic cover off otherwise you'll hear it vibrate like my speakers are broken lol

    hi there, great video, I would like to upgrade the sound system on my aygo 2008. I have some questions , because the car came only with front speakers. Which wires (diameter) have you used to connect the rear speakers with the head unit connector? Did I get it right that you used ISO MALE Connectors? or did you use female iso block connectors? Thanks for you help in advance

    • @DABDIY
      @DABDIY  Рік тому

      All the answers to your questions are in the video. I used a roll of generic speaker wire to run the cables to the back and fitted these to the ISO block converter. I did have to swap the red and yellow wires around so that the head unit can retain its memory though.

  • @Gourmondise
    @Gourmondise 2 роки тому +3

    Dave! Would you know roughly how many speakers that factory head unit can power? I'm planning to put another set in the rear doors on my Pug, but I already have 6 and an underseat sub unit.
    Many thanks and keep up the good work!

    • @DABDIY
      @DABDIY  2 роки тому

      I guess if you used an amp with a high level input, you could use that to power more speakers. I doubt the factory head unit is up to much tbh.

    Hi great video. I'm looking at doing the rear speakerr install on my 3 door 107. I've bought some 16.5cm speakers which are the same size as you installed. Please could you tell me the measurements for cutting out the plastic panel to ensure they fit workout hitting any of the cars metal framework? Huge thanks

      Ah, I understand what you mean. I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t measure at all. I took the top of the panel off, looked to see what the gap was like behind it and made my best guess lol.

      I have a 5 door and there doesn’t seem to be enough room for speakers in the rear doors. After upgrading the dash speakers I got around the bass (or rather lack thereof) problem by fitting a Kenwood sub/amp under the passenger seat. It makes the sound 1000x better and isn’t too difficult to install 😊

      If you get the door panels off you can see space behind them. There is a layer of white styrofoam covering that area but you can cut out a hole for the speaker. The speaker has to be in the door bin.

      I’m not sure about that one to be honest, I’ve not come across one with 4 wires before. I would assume that you’ve got component speakers from the factory; that is speakers with both a mid woofer and a tweeter in the same unit. Is that right?

    So, you replaced the factory ("tweeterless") speakers with absolute low-end, entry-level after market "tweeterless" speakers, which sound AWFUL. Why? What's the purpose of the dat? What's the benefit? What's the upgrade? Regarding the rear speakers, no comment on destroying the panels to install another pair of trash quality low-end, entry level "tweeterless" speakers (it's your car anyway). Great success! All 4 speakers work...

    • @DABDIY
      @DABDIY  Рік тому +3

      Not sure where the hostility in your comment is coming from. If you consider these pioneer speakers to be of inferior quality to the paper cone POS speakers installed from the factory, I think you might find that you’re entirely mistaken. As for the rear panels, it’s not like they can’t be replaced with a like-for-like panel from a scrap yard at very low cost. As you said though, it’s my car. I consider anything to be an upgrade from the two paper dash speakers installed from the factory.
