You gotta admire Miyamoto’s persistence here. You know, for some reason, he must have really liked the idea, and kept with it, not giving up hope, for decades.
And ended up making something equally as iconic as the best selling home console Nintendo ever made.
A character customizer is simply such a simple concept. But so intriguing if done right.
Case in point, the number of hours people spend in the Skyrim character customiser

When I got my Wii U, I was very disappointed to find they removed the ability to transfer Miis via Wiimotes from the old Wii. Also, the process of transferring data from the Wii to Wii U was a one-way, destructive process, meaning I’d lose everything on the old console. Additionally, that option was a very bad idea, because some of my most played Wii games would lose the ability to be played with GameCube controllers (Smash Bros. Brawl & Mario Kart Wii, specifically.)
In the end, I had to borrow a cousin’s 3DS (which I didn’t have) to transfer my 70 Miis from my Wii to his 3DS and then to my Wii U.
Why, Nintendo, why? It’s no wonder the Wii U did so poorly in the market.

Ok I know I’m super late but at 9:16 that’s literally Larry, Mia and Gumshoe from ace attorney (can’t believe I realized that two years after the vid was originally published)
(5:00) No, complicated characters does not mean large file sizes.
Because all a character is in these games are what settings are chosen, so the file size is only determined by the amount of options chosen. So reduce the amount of options, and the file size shrinks.
When you transfer a Mii to the remote, you aren't transferring the 3D models. You are only transferring the settings of that Mii (and that it is a Mii). For example, Xbox avatars are more detailed, for sure, but they lack any option of position, size, rotation for the facial features, meaning less options, meaning a potential smaller file size than a Mii character. ... again, you aren't transferring the 3D models, only each individual value in the settings of that character.

It's funny how Miyamoto's colleagues questioned his idea, when Funny Face came out on DOS in 1990, which is basically a simplistic version of "Make someone you know".
Amazingly, Miis are still supported today.
Fun fact: Did you know that the only way to transfer Miis from 3DS and Wii U to the Switch is through amiibo? Like, one by one.

He is also the father of two human children.
Let's not forget that he wasn't the only one who came up with the idea, even if he did 20 years prior, since the other team had made a lot of progress on their own. So he's not the only creator of Miis.

I never really cared about miis till' Tomodachi Life. Watching them get married, have kids, and fight make me invested in the them.
On the Wii, other than making them or playing with them, all you could do is watch them talk, sneeze, fall asleep, or fall over. The concept of Tomodachi Life was amazing to me, that they could more deeply interact with each other and do so much more than that.
We need a sequel to Tomodachi Life with a lot of new stuff like, new song genres, roommates, Nintendo Switches to give to the miis, room and clothing customization, heck maybe even same gender marriages.

Mii too. Which is one of the reasons why I prefer the Wii/Wii U over the Switch. I plan to get a Wii U soon(maybe next week), to play NSMBU, Nintendo Land, Virtual console for the N64 and DS, and more! Just to relive the good ol' days. Ah Nostalgia. It has taken over me, and I'm proud of it.😊

I believe the faces in Talent Studio were eventually used in Face Raider for the 3DS. At least the facial animations look very similar.

That's what I thought when I saw footage of it. The way they blink is similar. Yeah, the idea of using photos of real people's faces definitely came from there.

It is important to note that the game on the Nintendo DS is called Tomodachi Collection and was only released in Japan. So really that's when Miis made their public debut. It's not region locked, so if you somehow get your hands on it and know Japanese, you can play it. It also has a sequel called Tomodachi Life on 3DS, which was super successful.
