Mario’s New Adventure: The Watching World A game where absolutely everything has eyes and you have to figure out which eyed things are enemies and which are normal tiles or blocks
@@smansmickgaming6789 Yes, that is indeed the story of the first game. However, I was strictly talking about the graphic design origins of the SMW blocks. Not how it fits into the overall "lore" of the Mario games. As Thomas stated, Tezuka liked putting eyes on everything whether it made sense or not. So if you take a look at the Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 blocks, they don't have eyes. But when you look at the Super Mario World blocks, they do have eyes. Which shows that the reason why they have eyes on them in that game is because Tezuka came up with the idea roughly between the end of Super Mario Bros. 3's development and Super Mario World's development.
I somehow (probably incorrectly thought) that yoshi came out of the egg hurling final bosses on a lot of the super Mario 2 levels even though SMB2 was basically a revamp of a Japanese game (toki toki panic)
He never _actually_ punched Yoshi. The animation in the final game is and always was Mario simply pointing. Punching Yoshi was _considered_ but they changed it long before they actually got to work on it.
Man, you have a gift for telling stories and summarising facts in a compelling way. I think I already knew 80% of this story, yet it felt like the first time I heard it when watching your video. Great work!
Since you actually mentioned Tamagon, I'm surprised you didn't mention that when he spawns on Devil World, he's "born" from some kind of egg thing, and it makes the exact sound Yoshi's egg makes when it hatches in Super Mario World, but in 8-bit. Also, that Yoshi sketch looks like a weird Chocobo thing (the lower head at least).
Yoshi: it devours it's preys and turns them in to it's offspring. It throws most of the eggs as an projectile weapon. That's pretty messed up when you think about it...
5:27 if mytamoto didn't put a stop for that then super mario bros 3 would be a weird game Edit: Wow! 60 likes? That's the most I have ever got in a comment. Thanks for the likes! :D
There was a game for the NES I remember from when I was a kid, "Adventure Island II", where the player character can find 4 different dinosaurs -- in eggs, no less -- that he can ride on and give him different abilities. The argument that Yoshi couldn't be implemented on the NES always falls flat, IMO, because of that game. Either way, he was the most memorable thing about Super Mario World, and I'm glad Yoshi has become a mainstay in the Mario universe ever since.
The thing from Devil World looks a bit like the Bubble Bobble Dragons. So the roots of Yoshi’s design could come from there if he is indeed based on the Devil World creature.
Yoshi uses way more sprites and animations to work. Goomba shoes are just 2 8x16 sprites and only 1 frame. Yoshi spliting his tongle in SMW is 2 16x16 sprites (not suported on NES) for the body, 5 or 6 8x8 sprites for the tongle and dynamic animation. Not impossible on NES, but very heavy with enemies on screen.

Yoshi is made in the form of a frog ( or a turtle, depends how you see it ) who has modeled after a dinosaur ( or a dragon ). I was always thinking this but i can say Yoshi is a invented creature who can be seen in more ways. Mario riding him as a horse can give us many aspects to learn and appropiate details to show everyone the imagination of creators to combine dinosaurs, dragons, turtles and make them as horses ( or pets ) Edit: This is what i'm thinking and i appreciate the video games.
Interesting video of the history of Yoshi's design. I did find it funny that Yoshi started off looking allot like a strange turtle dinosaur hybrid but after a few years the design of Yoshi improved to the love-able character that he became. Yoshi from Super Mario 64 original looks completely different to the Super Mario 64 DS version where he is playable.
Mario punching Yoshi shouldn't be too surprising considering how abusive he was to his pet gorilla Donkey Kong... Mario's always been an animal abuser. He must be stopped!
