I love this movie! Let me tell you, as a Canadian, John Candy was a national treasure. He could make you laugh your ass off and also make you cry. To say he was loved, and lovable, is an understatement.

Sadly, he didn't hold himself in very high esteem. Roger Ebert told a sad little story about talking to him in a hotel lobby once (it was actually in his review for Planes, Trains, and Automobiles), and that he was surprised at how much the man was convinced people didn't like him, and that he wasn't good enough to deserve their adulation, anyway.

So sad to hear but I can understand. Sometimes how we see ourselves is not how others see us. i neve rmer him but do remember the day he passed. i was in college and walking up the stairs to class and a classmate let me that he just died. Sad day. John Candy was one of a kind amd he left his mark in our hearts.

Fun fact. The studios had actually made the director (John Hughes) cut out close to one hr of the final cut, leaving out extra side plots and dialogue. For ex. 1) the pizza boy came back to break in and steal the wallet, 2) they had actually driven PAST CHICAGO by mistake and 3) his co-worker at the office made it home on time which made the wife convinced her husband was having an affair and Dell Griffith was actually his female mistress. This was why she was almost crying when he actually returned home with Dell. It's amazing the film turned out as good as it did with so much left out.

I read that originally the movie would have Del explaining that he spent his entire savings on medical expenses for his wife. When she passed, Del could no longer afford the mortgage payments and the Bank foreclosed on his home. So he was literally homeless, living on the road. However the Director, John Hughes cut that scene out, because he thought it was too heavy and depressing for a comedy movie.

After watching this a bunch of times, I finally realized that Neil’s wife is crying at the end because Neil called her to tell him Del’s story and that she was crying because of it…I thought she thought Neil was cheating on her or something, but it finally clicked.
Also, Del is in a world of hurt yet he has such a bubbly, happy, helpful person to his core. Neil has everything in comparison yet is a miserable bastard even to flight attendants and car rental clerks who are powerless. You realize that everyone who knows Del helps him out a bit…at first you think it’s because he’s a sales guy with favors, but in fact it’s because people that know him and/or his situation are helping him out from the goodness of their hearts. To them it’s “just” a motel room, but to Del it could be the last warm bed he sleeps in for all he knows.
What are the holidays for if not sharing a what you have with a humble “freeloader?”

No, she wasn’t crying because of Del’s story.
In a deleted scene, Neal’s colleague (the guy at the beginning) got home on time and Mrs Page was worried Neal didn’t come home because he was cheating on her (I think it’s meant to be significant that she was asleep when the news on the TV announced O Hare Airport had reopened). Turning up with a very real Del Griffiths at the house put an end to those fears.

FUN FACT: The airline counterperson is none other than Ben Stein! He is a world-renowned lawyer and economist, advising multiple U.S. presidents. He began his political career as a speechwriter and lawyer for President Richard Nixon, and later for President Gerald Ford. He has a side hustle as an actor, having starred in many notable films and TV series including "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "The Wonder Years." He also appeared in many TV commercials. It's a fact in the Library of Congress.

"Planes, Trains and Automobiles" is a one of a kind film that can't be duplicated. I remember Robert Downey Jr. and Zachary Galifanakis came out with a comedy a few years ago with a similar premise called "Due Date." It's about a businessman that has to make it home within a few days before his wife gives birth to their first child I believe, but he runs into a slob character that both hinders and helps him along the way to get home. The comedy is very similar with Robert playing the "Steve Martin "straight man" archetype", and Zachary playing the "goofy lovable idiot archetype" that's similar to what John Candy played in this film. However, it wasn't as well received, and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that it was just a cheap knock off of what "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" was. It was lightning in a bottle that I doubt we'll ever see duplicated.

He was kind, funny, considerate, very intelligent and also a great dramatic actor as you see in the more serious and melancholy scenes in this movie.

🥺❤️‍🩹 my condolences, yeah this is a wonderful movie, in the deleted scenes, Neil's wife thinks he may be having an affair, so her reaction when they arrive together and she sees Dale ,she knows the truth. My hope is you have a wonderful Thanksgiving day with wonderful memories of your mom, I lost my mom a couple years ago too, so I know the feeling ❤️‍🩹

I’ve seen some of these movies before but watching them with the two you make the experience ten times better! Please keep doing what you’re doing! You are both original, real, and great together! I highly recommend people who may feel down during the holidays discover this channel. Someday there may be a movie of the two of you reviewing movies and the joy you bring to others. Have a wonderful holiday season!

I think this film resonates with everyone because we all recognise elements of ourselves in the two characters in a way that doesn't make it seem too dated. Plus, we have all been delayed at least once in one of the various forms of transportation that these characters take throughout the story. We've all chatted to annoying person on a long journey; we have probably all *been* an annoying person on a long journey from someone else's point of view and we've all made friends with people that we thought we'd never like because of their intense differences with us.

    • @Extra_050
      @Extra_050 Рік тому

Oh and a fun fact to note is that this film really was shot in all the different states through which these characters travel, which makes it all the more realistic. In that scene at 43:18 where Steve Martin's character moves from thinking of his family to thinking back to John Candy's character to piecing together the fact that maybe his new friend's wife isn't there anymore, the actor is on a very real train on a long journey and all of those facial expressions are genuine.

One of my favorite movies, period. Love the human story along with the straightforward comedy. Both Steve Martin and John Candy are fantastic in this. John Hughes writing at his very best too! There is a post credit sequence of Neil’s boss looking at the ad layout over his thanksgiving turkey… still indecisive even then… hope you guys had a wonderful thanksgiving. Thankful for your reactions and how amazingly comforting and joyful they are for me.

This movie is hilarious, heart warming and wholesome. Glad you enjoyed it. I'll share a fun fact. The scene with the burglar who broke into their hotel room and stole their money. There's a back story with that burglar. In a scene that didn't make the final cut, that burglar was their pizza delivery guy. Del only gave him a dollar tip and they got into an argument. So he comes back to get his revenge lol.

I've read about that where they found all the lost footage that didn't make the final cut of the movie. And it explains well. I thought Neil was the one who didn't tip him considering he was acting like a jerk in the beginning but Del well that didn't surprised me lol

Ok... now I get it. The next morning at breakfast Neal says "...you went into my wallet for pizza..." Always thought that was weird but just went with it. Still, thank goodness hotels now put that extra latch in the doors to make it tough for theives.

Also, If you’re looking for a great Steve Martin film, I highly recommend you guys watch Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. It’s by far one of the funniest Steve Martin movies ever made. Such a funny concept & hilarious character acting.
