    There's a much easier, faster, and more sustainable way to light a fire than this video that doesnt require expensive kerosene, and only requires 3 or 4 large split pieces of soft fire wood like Pine or Aspen and a few small pieces of cardboard or paper . All you have to do is put 2 pieces of fire wood parallel to each other with the rough split sides facing each other with about a 2"gap and put a few pieces of cardboard or paper in the length of the gap, but being careful not to completely block the gap air flow through it. Then put the one or two remaining pieces of fire wood diagonally on top of the bottom two pieces of wood so that they are also parallel to each other with a small 1" gap between them. Then simply light the cardboard in the gap. Once the fire has caught and you hear the wood crackling and the cardboard is gone, slightly close the lower 2" gap to about 1". The trick with successful fire starting is knowing how to use rough wood surface area and gaps between them and after a while watching and studying how wood burns best, you will see what works best. One wood surface area by itself doesn't burn or ignite very well, you always want another parallel wood surface ideally about 1" away that creates a gap for airflow and to trap heat.

    When I had access to lots of free sawdust I would use a gallon scoop made from an old milk jug as a sawdust measuring cup and pour diesel on it.

    I have a Heartland Oval Wood Cook Stove....I believe you also have a Cook Stove.....Do use diesel to light it also ?????

      This would work great for any wood burning stove, including cook stoves.

    Keeping in line with diesel as an accelerant… which works great btw…
    I’ve soaked both cotton balls and cotton makeup pads with diesel, also tried lighter fluid. Let soak, squeeze out excess.
    Then, in an expedient double boiler, melt paraffin wax.
    Turn OFF the heat source !!!
    Dip the soaked balls or pads in the melted wax and few times. Let harden.
    Place one under tinder or kindling and light.
    Keeps liquid fuel contained. No need to pour.
    One can also 5:59 tease out the cotton fibers, but your fingers could smell like fuel. The teasing will make starting with a ferro rod a snap. A bic lighter without teasing will work too.

    I would not be using RED Dyed Diesel inside my house and the Colouring Dye is VERY poisonous. Just use Clear diesel or the paraffin Lamp Oil that is made to use inside your home.

      Thank you for sharing your concerns Rick. Seasoned wood and paper kindling is definitely a cleaner way to start a fire.

    What? Would never use diesel in my home nor kerosene! If you properly, season your wood, in that is prepare correctly, you would never need to use any type of igniter fluid. I disagree completely. Sorry David this is not good advice.

    • @LDSPrepper
      @LDSPrepper  7 місяців тому

      Thank you for your comment Mike. I agree, properly seasoned wood, using wood or paper kindling, is all that is needed with sufficient time managing the fire. This is just another way to light a fire for those who don't have the time or seasoned wood.

    Method not recommended for some stoves, and may void warranty. Top down starting with paper works great and doesn't require as much tending durin start up.

    Can't resin from evergreen trees help with making a fire? The resin (sap) around the tree bark.

    • @LDSPrepper
      @LDSPrepper  7 місяців тому

      Yes, sap definitely works. It is a little harder to light if it is dry but has a nice long burn.

    Good video. I have been using a similar method, but rather than worrying about pouring fluids, I keep a small container of hardwood chainsaw sawdust that has been soaked in diesel. Very handy for spring and fall for when an occasional fire is needed. Usually, only 1 or 2 tablespoons of the soaked sawdust will be more than enough to get things going. One 5 gallon bucket of sawdust soaked in about 1/2 gallon of diesel has lasted me the last 2 years. A one second click from a lighter will start the mixture. No need for a torch. 5 gallon bucket stays in the barn for when i need to refill 1.5 qt container used indoors.

    What is the difference in Diesel # 1 & Diesel #2? They both say off road.

    • @LDSPrepper
      @LDSPrepper  7 місяців тому

      Diesel #1 has additives so it won't jell up in winter. It costs more than #2. Buy #2 off-grid for the best price.

    I'm not really sure what the purpose is behind using kerosene or diesel to light a fire especially indoors in a controlled environment, that person probably shouldn't be making fires lol, leave it to the smarter adults.
    Making a fire even with wet wood is not rocket science. I could completely understand if somebody was attempting to make a fire outside and didn't want to go through the slightly slower process of doing it right I get that, but it's outdoors. But definitely not indoors.
    As somebody who lives in a town on Cape Cod I can say that for the most part that fireplace igniter from back in the day isn't really used too much these days anymore mostly due to safety issues with how easy they are to tip over and being a fire hazard.

    For anyone interested, I uploaded 3 short videos on my channel showing the easiest method I've found to start a fire without Kerosene or any fluid. All you need is Carboard, paper, but I'm sure it would work with any type of kindling that ignites easily.

    We keep a 32 oz pump bottle of diesel next to our wood stove along with cut up 3 inch squares of old cotton cloth from old clothing. A few squirts of diesel onto the cloth and a match and it's enough to get the fire going. We've been heating our home 100% of the time for 38 years and only refill our 32 oz pump bottle once every 3 weeks. Cheapest way to get a fire started perfectly every time.
