  • What he said before the song was: "It is Saint Giovanni's day. The first two letters reminds me of one band... Soundgarden....I obviously don’t have a band up here, but I have you, and we have each other. We’ve been playing with some string sections, and they couldn’t be here tonight. So I’m looking to employ you, and employ you to do this one together, we’ll borrow a few Stone chords. We are many, we are one, and probably all of us at one time have been through the blacks."
    Eddie Vedder - Black

And here I am, four years later, crying my eyes out listening to this song. Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Eddie Vedder will forever be my idols. They represent everything that is good to me. It's sometimes unbelievable how you can feel so much from people you never met (or will never meet), but they have talked to each one of us directly, and said some much more meaningful things that whoever is around us. I feel it, I was almost at that point, but I am still here, to remember them. Thank you.

Now it carries a completely different meaning for him and to us. Can't imagine the things that goes on his head while singing this song to this day. That’s why Chris touched so many bc he was from the light side and his inspiration and convictions are obvious in his music. He didn’t worship celebs or man, nor materialism. His music was genuine and soulful and don’t make the mistakes of the world and blindly follow. These demigods, false prophets they’re replacing the original real deal like CC, etc with sell outs that taking ppl down with created chaos and virtue signaling.

Lost my dad, unexpectedly, about 6 months ago. He was arguably one of the biggest Pearl Jam / Eddie Vedder fans of all time. He had dozens of their live albums on CD (that I now have) and we always jammed to them on road trips from the time I was 10 years old (probably even younger) up to this past year when I was 29. I have his iPod now and some Pearl Jam songs are probably on there 30+ times because he wanted each and every different version of songs like ‘Alive’ and ‘Even Flow’ he could find. The night after he passed, we went to his favorite local bar to drink our sorrows away. About 5 minutes after we get there, a live musician shows up with a guitar to play some tunes. The first song he plays is an Eddie Vedder cover. Next song was Daughters by John Mayer, which he and my sister always jammed to. Next song was Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight. Makes me think pops was with us that night, sipping on some bourbon right there next to us. Miss that man every day. Cheers, pops. Come back.

When he broke down saying "come back" it felt like somebody reached in, grabbed my soul, beat the living shit out of it and left it for dead. I haven't felt such pain in a very long time. There are way too few people that can do this via singing. Long live Eddie!

First time I have seen this version of Black. You expressed every thought spinning around in my heart & head right now. “Come back…” ripped my heart into a million pieces. I know that kind of heartbreak. To put it all out there is a brave and beautiful thing. God Bless Eddie Vedder. I don’t know how he made it through the song to be honest. From the first note, the heartache of loss was palpable.

And now I need to wipe those fucking tears off my face.

There is not one song in the world that translates feeling to me as strongly as this one, for as depressed i've been and as many fucking devastating songs i've heard before, this one is the constant. It breaks me, it makes me weep without fail, it touches my soul.
This is what art is, a transmission of feelings, feelings so deep and so pure that only through a medium such as music can they truly be translated.
I see so many covers of this song where everyone has a fantastic voice, yet they all fail because they don't feel it, they don't go to this place. You need to understand that feeling is all black is about, so if you don't feel it, you can have the worlds most angelical voice and you would still fail.

Totally agree. It’s the first song that ever brought me to tears and I didn’t even know what was happening!
Brings me back to laying on my bed at 16 years old and that same emotion that I had then.
      It’s an emotional masterpiece!

    • @melaniesharp397
      @melaniesharp397 Рік тому +1

Beautifully expressed. If a song doesn’t make me FEEL something across the scale of emotions - joy, heartbreak, uplifting, makes me want to dance, get fired up, turned on, or the longing ache of loneliness ‘wanting to know what love is’ , it ends up sounding like the adults of Charlie Browns world, wah wah wah. Very few current artists with the exception of Adele, Pink and even at times Miley - she sings Nothing Else Matters with Metallica that blows me away. I’m a classic rock/ 80’s to early 90’s person for the most part. Eddie is one of the few voices that fall into the ‘timeless’ category for me. Just Breathe is an all time fave. If you haven’t seen his duet with Yusuf Cat Stevens of Father & Son from Global Citizen, check it out. It should be required listening!
You seem so in tune with the soul of music. Do you ever get messages thru music? When I am sad, depressed, kicking myself about something I can’t go back and fix or despondent (just a sample of a few), a certain song will come on. Whatever ‘lesson’ I need to hear at that particular time, seems to scream the lyrics into my heart. It’s hard to describe. I guess my most relatable example is being in a very dark emotional place, abusing pain medication, in love with someone who didn’t love me back and all I could see was the path of sadness and self destruction ahead of me. I started driving hoping something would happen to end my pain. Stairway to Heaven came on the radio. I was on autopilot, unable to snap out of the hopelessness, it was as if time stood still and MADE me listen to the following lyrics - yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there’s still time to change the road you’re on’ It changed my life. The other comes from the amazing Freddie Murcury in BoHo Rhapsody - I don’t want to die. I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all, followed by Brian Mays guitar sound like it’s crying. Another song I had heard a billion times suddenly screaming what I needed to hear.
I couldn’t live without music. It’s saved my life on so many levels. The silly 70’s pop I grew up with, kept my spirits up during lockdown.
I’m rambling. I just relate to your thoughts about the song/music. #lifelessons #musicheals

Sometimes through my musical journey I forget about these guys but I always come back and realize that this is the group that started it all for me. Every time I listen to this song it brings me back to 1992. This is also the song that I listen to over and over and over again when my wife passed away in 2017, I can hear, see and feel his pain when he’s singing this as he shares the same pain I do. It’s definitely hard losing someone and I wish it upon no one.
