“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star, In somebody else’s sky, but why can’t it be mine?” I was too young to understand this lyric when this song came out but years later in my adulthood I feel every word.. It makes me appreciate the music of my generation even more.
Every time I hear this song I can have different feelings depending on the video and the crowd...The crowds singing with Eddie gives me chills and different emotions..
My dad use to play this a lot when I was young. Of course, I never understood why he liked it so much. However being older and someone who has been learning guitar and music, this song is truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Never get tired of it.

It's what bands do if they had real talent to begin with and still give a damn. Nothing worse than seeing a thirty year old band that were sick of their set list twenty years ago but need a check to make a few payments. Many people dont take STYX seriously for some reason but they hit the stage and put on a rock show every show and have for 45 years. That's what professionals do. STYX are pros and Pearl Jam is the next generation doing the same.
I haven't found another heartbreakingly beautiful ballad that, to this day makes people cry. Without a doubt, one of the Best songs ever written. Pearl Jam is a Spiritual Experience, not just a Band...
I am impressed how well Eddy's vocal chords held up after all these years of that raspy, distorted grunge style. Most of the guys from that era have no pipes left. Similar to the 80's head-screamers. Although I notice he cleverly avoided singing the most difficult notes and left it to the audience to do it for him. He also shows a lot less emotion when doing this song, but that makes sense given that he's now 30 years or so removed from whatever incident inspired him to write this song.
Eddie wrote this song about a high school girlfriend. Your whole comment is spot on though. Not alot of vocalists can maintain the voices over the years but, Eddie Vedder is one of the exceptions. Billy Ocean is another that comes to mind, and he started out in the late 70's.

Michael Ball I couldn’t of said it better. I agree wholeheartedly that it is sad and beautiful too. But it weirdly makes me happy when I hear it too. Especially when it’s really LOUD!
This song is so beautiful. A story of lost love, so personal for Eddie. Yet so perfect for the rest of us. Stone, Mike, and Jeff crafted the perfect music to accompany Eddie's lyrics. Love it love it.
The way he placed that solo at the end of the song was so natural.. what a beautiful experience to hear this video every time, first part for the lyrics, second one for the guitar. Imo one of the best thing ever heard on yt.
5 minutes of Mike McCready and Matt Cameron simply owning that stage. Every part of that solo was spot on from the hand off at 4:14 from Eddie to Mike -to- the wind down at 6:24 leading right back into the "Black" riff at 6:53. As someone said in a different comment "a religious experience." I've followed this band from the 90's and they still can't disappoint. Amazing.

Lyrics:
Hey, oh
Sheets of empty canvas
Untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me
As her body once did
All five horizons
Revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed
Has taken a turn
Oh and all I taught her was everything
Oh I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands
Chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything
Oh the pictures have
All been washed in black
Tattooed everything
I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by
Some kids at play
I can feel their laughter
So why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin
Round my head
I'm spinning
Oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away
And now my bitter hands
Cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures have
All been washed in black
Tattooed everything
All the love gone bad
Turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see
All that I am
All that I'll be, yeah
Uh huh, uh huh, oh
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky
But why
Why
Why can't it be
Oh can't it be mine
You forgot the "tururutu tururu" at the end xD

Timeless. 1992 was an awful year for my family and I played this so much. I was so sad when my cassette broke because I played it so much.
Thanks ❤

Hey, hey, yeah, uh
Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did
All five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn, ooh
And all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black
Tattooed everything
I take a walk outside, I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear
Oh and twisted thoughts that spin 'round my head
I'm spinning, oh I'm spinning, how quick the sun can drop away
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures have all been washed in black
Tattooed everything
All the love gone bad turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be yeah
Oh oh ooh
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, oh can't it be mine?
Ooh, ah yeah, ah ooh
Doodoo-doo-doo-doodoodoo, Doodoo-doo-doo-doodoodoo
Doodoo-doo-doo-doodoodoo, Doodoo-doo-doo-doodoodoo
Doodoo-doo-doo-doodoodoo, Doodoo-doo-doo-doodoodoo

Wow. After all these years I didn't expect him to sound this good. Shame on me! Very impressed. He's brilliant!
Mike McCready. Absolutely smoking that solo.
Fucking. Jamming jamming
MM is the fucking man. No one can emote such beautiful torture from a piece of wood and metal strings like he can. Fucking amazing, Still
Watching him do solos like that, it's almost like you shouldn't be witness to such emotion, he is the instrument💗
Perfeito!
Perfeito.
This beautiful song should have been played forever and ever..
Never ever ended, like my love for you.
You will allway's have a special place in my heart, I smile and I cry thinking about you.
100% volume is never enough for some songs, this is one of those songs
Just an EPIC MAGICAL MASTERPIECE Of GOD'S. ALWAYS Brings tears to my eyes and soul
GOD BLESS AND KEEP US ALL & ALWAYS REMEMBER How loved we are ALWAYS.
100% agreed !
this song is the only song i’ve cried to continuously i can’t explain the feeling of this after a break up it’s unhuman
Eddie sounds so good. I'm surprised he was able to maintain his voice so well from the 90s. Lucky dude.
Because his vocal range is low.
@@paisaoang5969 that has nothing to do with
Paing moe Eddie has a wide range, singing deep lows, yet can hit high highs too, we call those baritones, tenor AND Bass range :)
Like most vocalists of his age, after years of alcohol & tobacco usage, they can pretty much only operate in low range bordering on flat.
I don't Know sure it does. When you write music younger that goes into higher registers your voice wears down
It's been said before, but I'll say it again: "It doesn't get Eddie Vedder than this"
And that solo ... Like a fine wine ...
It gets wilder with age.
I go back to old version and this is much better than old version is crazy I love Eddie
The solo is amazing. Amazing...
Amazing
You... Get a cookie.
Can't stop listening, damn, the lyrics of this song are so powerful, depressing and beautiful at the same time!
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky
But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?
yes
That last line hits me fuckin hard
Anyone: "I have a crush on someone"
Eddie Vedder *hold my beer*
@@gamerdepositivo Yes, this says it all. Ultimately, it's low self esteem music. After a relationship, wish her well, AND MOVE ON.
The best version of Black, live ever, thank you Pearl Jam, Mr.Eddie and Mr. McCready. Superb interpretation!
The guitar solo was just speaking for itself. 👌
Chrysi Chrysi McReedy is the absolute shit
It was so good!
The guitar solo was shit on the last part like he forgot whats the next progression. Or he lost his tabs its freaking me out.
Vladimier Krusevs lmao
The last section?
What? He forgot it’s in E minor?
Give me a break, dude. It’s literally the first scale people learn, and it sounds fine. Tasteful even.
Stop grasping.
Two feelings...
The emotion of this song is out of this world. The saddest & most beautiful song ever
it's not sad, it makes me happy
I'm going to get a verse from this song tattooed on me but I'm not sure which one. Any suggestions? From the beginning, 1992, this song has always touched me like no other
@@arfizzrazz "All the love gone bad turned my world to black"
@Felix DSM I was thinking the same thing. Thanks!
He touched Mike like he wanted to say "It's your turn Mike, make that guitar sounds like nobody heard before"
That touch also gave me the feeling of brotherhood too being a vocalis. I could feel that
Yes Indeed❤❤ That Touch said "Do your Thang" and that he did and then some. Phenomenal ❤Nothing but Pure Magic❤
Same impression.
Toda vez quê escuto, parece ser a primeira vez, sempre me emociona.
The way he placed that solo at the end of the song was so natural.. what a beautiful experience to hear this video every time, first part for the lyrics, second one for the guitar. Imo one of the best thing ever heard on yt.
That guitar solo... wow. Eddie still sounds amazing too, still packs a lot of emotion after years gone by. Would love to hear him live 💕
The emotion in that guitar solo is astounding. Such a beautiful way to end a powerful song.
100% Agree
Its a masterpiece song!!
Thanks a lot
That brought me right back. You can say the same for mike during his solo. He was looking up in another world while bringing tears to all eyes.
Best performance of black ever. What a guitar solo. Fantastic.
Nah , it’s good but nothing will ever beat unplugged , that was just incredible
mtv unplugged is the best.
i suggest listening to the atlanta 1994 live version. in my opinion, that version is the best
Their best solo guitar of black at live on two legs
The connection with the Argentinian audience in Buenos Aires is unique too. 100% recommended.
There are no words to describe this masterpiece ❤
5 minutes of Mike McCready and Matt Cameron simply owning that stage. Every part of that solo was spot on from the hand off at 4:14 from Eddie to Mike -to- the wind down at 6:24 leading right back into the "Black" riff at 6:53. As someone said in a different comment "a religious experience." I've followed this band from the 90's and they still can't disappoint. Amazing.
Very nice version, best song ever.
Most touching lyrics ever:
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky
But why
Why
Why can't it be
Oh can't it be mine"
yes
Exactly!
