Questions- His great, great grandpa was Italian. That is the 3rd generation back, so will that make the process easier for my husband and I if he gets the citizenship before me?

I am so in love not only with your chateau, but the out buildings too. You have so much potential in those buildings. I am aware that it would take a lot of money to restore them, but they could also generate quite a bit of income too. You are both so blessed to have found and purchased this property. Good luck. I love your videos and look forward to watching them every week.

More than the fact that it’s Your property is the fact that you, Lincoln and the girls could be out anywhere there and you don’t need to be worrying about gettin shot! …on YOUR property! There is no excuse to be there. They have plenty of areas to hunt legally! BTW I absolutely love the drone footage, anywhere, anytime. Enzo is the happiest 3 legged dog ever. Never worry about talking about hunting. I commented a while ago about my own struggles with hunters on my 100-acre country property only wanting the heads and not the rest for eating. It still makes me so irked when I once saw a young, headless buck! I booby-trapped the lane with what I can’t tell you what but there were flat tires. I also was constantly tearing down blinds on my property - I was a whirling dervish of irkness! Keep on Amanda!

Your first clip of Lincoln in the cottage was a hoot; along with the music my mind could only fathom the work (in hyper drive) as a form of hive deconstruction. Your care in maintaining the architectural details of the structures is commendable. We have watched as our antique buildings in California disappear due to the mindset of “it will be cheaper to build new”. This reminds me of eight little words, just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Our 1915 Craftsman bungalow home was lost to fire three years ago, most of the above ground structure slipped into the basement and we were only left with burnt vertical sticks with no parts that could be restored. We are in the process of rebuilding in the style of the house that was lost, both inside and out. Yes, it is all new construction, but my hope is that no one walking down the street will ever be able to guess that the house was a complete loss and that it will still appear to be the original 1915 Craftsman bungalow home (that looks like it just had a fresh coat of paint). Best to all of you from a not so sunny California.

Great vid! btw - slate thickness is just one consideration when relaying a roof. Slate by nature varies in hardness by location of the source as it is a natural material. We recently redid our slate roof in the US and there were many options. If you want the hardest (most durable) slate at a "good" thickness it comes at a premium. A thick slate that is "softer" isn't necessarily the best option, so exercise some care. Slates erode over time as it s a natural material with the softer materials thinning more quickly. Our roof lasted 130 years, which I've learned is pretty good for the US. We had to source slate from Canada to get something that will last another 130 years. Some learning to do on this topic but I'm sure you'll figure out what's best for your home, out buildings, and budget. Great content and vids - keep up the great work!

You're lucky, we moved to France last year on a tourist visa and have to renew it every year. Luckily we can do that financially but it's not a long-term solution. We're going through the process for something more permanent but it's France and it takes time. Also, the one is natural slate, split out of stone. The other looks like a fiber cement "slate". It's decent, it's manufactured, the only downside besides being very brittle, is that it seems to provide more moss growth than true slate. At least at our property. One outbuilding has it, the rest is real. Also, I would recommend removing all the ivy. I know people like it, but it's detrimental to the stone and horrific to the roof/structure. I feel you on the mowing, we're in the Pyrenees and...I just don't want to start yet, but it's getting to that point.

Ireland is also a member of the EU, so I'm glad to have the citizenship. I haven't gone through the passport process, but I do have the document showing my Irish citizenship.

  • @TheSecretChateau

I sympathise with your problems with hunters on your land. You need to place signs reading 'Prive Réserve de Chasse' (Private Nature Reserve - No Hunting) or 'Chasse Interdite' (No Hunting) or both every 100/200 metres along the boundary of your property. Check these signs regularly as hunters often rip them out. The Prive Réserve de Chasse means that you have declared your land to be a private nature reserve. However, this can take up to 5 years to come through, as hunting maps are only updated every 5 years. This can be done through your local Prefecture. You are within your rights to ask any hunter on your land (or whose dogs are on your land) for their papers/hunt licence, and make sure you photograph this, but NOT them, and take your complaint to the local Gendarmerie and Mayor. I can appreciate your anger, but it's never a good idea to confront men with guns. Anger gets you nowhere, as the hunters will often respond in kind, blow you off, threaten you in return, or quote endless rubbish about culture and tradition. There are different concerns to consider though; a neighbour banned hunting from her property and the following year she was over run with boar, rabbits and hare which destroyed her gardens, fields and forest. Another neighbour has problems with fox killing her wildfowl and resident chickens, so sometimes permits the hunt for that reason alone. Check your neighbours to ask if they allow the hunt on their land and see if they can advise you, and get the word out to local hunters to avoid your land. We ourselves banned hunting, but even after this the chasse once chased a wild boar across our vegetable garden and into our pool. Seeing as ours is an indoor pool, you can only imagine the ugly disaster that was for us! Good luck! Bonsoir from Normandie. ❤

It would piss me off to have hunters on my land too. There are so many things that could go wrong in that scenario.

I truly admire your courage and fortitude ,Amanda, to climb that really high ladder and work at that height. Also you have every right to not want dogs and hunters on your land. It is private property and you have the right to walk on your own land and not fear being shot or attacked by dogs. The hunters have plenty of other spaces not inhabited by humans to do their so called sport hunting. Love all the drone footage as it really captures the vast space of land you own and also love getting 2 videos per week from you lovely people now.

I hate hunters with all my soul and I’m so proud of you, proud of you being able to breath and talk respectfully to such disgraceful people. Sorry, I’m just not tolerant with hunters. Love your videos and never tired of your combat to keep away the hunting dogs… those poor abused dogs. They are also victims.

We completely understand your views about people hunting on your property. 'stick to your guns' (in the nicest possible way...).. We obtained Italian Citzenship whilst living in Australia before moving to the EU. Thankfully my husband got his just prior to the change to the language rule coming into force. He's working hard to learn the language but it takes a little longer when in your 60s. Proficiency in Italian is now a requirement for citizenship. We believe the same rule is also being adopted in France or perhaps it has already been implemented.

Regarding the hunters. This may be a silly question, but why don’t you erect a wire fence around your property, so they can’t come in?

Interesting to see what you are doing, I am too old for it now, but watching other people doing this is also enjoyable. One tip, when you use a ladder put it at a steeper angle, not 45 degrees but 60 or 70, then it’s loaded more favourably (I hope my english is ok).

I've only grown carrots one time (moved before the next growing season), do you have to harvest them the first year or they become woody? I vaguely recall something like that. But, those looked so beautiful, I love all the different carrot colours, and they're so delicious, especially roasted. Are you growing raspberries? I've got a kind that makes gold raspberries, and they produced last year (even in pots!) well into fall. They're slightly sweeter than the red ones, which I also love. When I lived up in Sonoma County, California, I had a big patch of them in the ground, and the chickens loved to hang out under them, but didn't bother the fruit. So they kept them 100% weed-free, fertilised them (ha ha!), and they grew like crazy. Probably the easiest fruit to grow. I did read that if you grow the black kind (which are truly the most delicious) you have to keep them well away from the other colours, as apparently they carry some malady that the others can get, but the black ones are immune to (and before anyone asks, I do mean black raspberries, I'm not talking about blackberries). But, I've not found the black ones for sale here so far. Hopefully I can mail-order them before too long, and get my garden going. I love that same building you said was your favourite outbuildings, so charming with that roofline that curves over the window.

The rumpus room is an awesome idea but you could make a cool speakeasy with entrance to it being an old wardrobe!!!! Like Narnia! I would absolutely do that if I had a chateau! 😂 Ya sitting in your own speakeasy drinking fancy cocktails, eating snacks and reading books on antiques and vintage fashion trends and cookbooks guiding you through the sourdough process! That’s the life!

Make no apologies for not wanting hunters on your property. I abhor hunting of any kind. Hunters will give excuses why they do it, keep boar etc population down, for food. As Lincoln says its for sport, nothing else. If you aren't worried about the wildlife population on your land, keep waving your arms like a banshee to keep hunters off! Surely they are trespassing anyway. Carry on, regardless 😊

    Hi Amanda and Lincoln,
It is such a joy seeing you, especially the part where you are together and sharing your experiences with us. I didn’t know it is that hard to get citizenship in EU, we’ve always wanted to move there when our kiddo grows up. Maybe we should start the process now, and SF is not too far from where we live 😄

Kudos to Italy! From one American to another! I don’t blame Italy for their stringent rules regarding citizenship! Here in America politicians could care less about protecting our country! There must stringent rules put in place to come to America and to become a citizen! Italy appears to be protecting their sovereignty! Kudos to #Italy

You are not alone in feeling some responsibility to the wildlife that finds its way to your land. I would feel the exact same way. You have many acres and I have 1/4 acre and if someone harmed the bunny that has been living in my backyard for the better part of a year, I would go all mama bear on them. She has found a safe haven here and that makes me very happy. Keep doing what your're doing, Amanda. It makes my heart happy to see your compassion!

Interesting work/path you two are on...~ I've come to realize that almost EVERY elderly person that has attempted to give me advice is spot on! Lived in a farm home built in 1914 (KS) & the owner told me to get all the vines growing up the house OFF: they destroy the structure.
Take it or leave this advice ~ & peace to you & you're family, still praying you'll consider a place of worship :-)

These vines are not harmful to the buildings. They're a member of the grape family. Traditional ivy will wreak havoc...

Oh my gosh , I found your channel and I have been been watching your progress of your beautiful home. I can officially say I have watched every episode some twice and went back and hit liked on every single one that I have watched. I also am an American from the bay area, but living in Saudi Arabia /Dubai . It’s exciting to move to another country. Try to learn another language and immerse yourself into culture and art. I admire your what you both have done for your family. I have to say I love your sense of humor and Lincoln’s calmness, and the fact that you have all these rescues I can relate. I have five rescues inside and 26 stray cats outside. Yeah it’s a problem here as well now ! The compliments I simply adore your mix of old and modern with pops of colors. I can’t get over how you both just picked up and started DYI everything. Amazing channel you’re filming and editing Music choices and the combination of your subjects have me hooked! ❤
