You can also press Z to instant let go of the ledge. This makes things like instant wall jump way easier. Way better than holding away. Hope people read this.
Hitfalling, for people who want some trivia, was an unintended feature by the devs in the first game. They set it up where characters could fast fall so long as they didn't have a positive vertical speed, intending for this to be when they were already coming down. However, it ended up including instances where you had zero vertical movement, and people found out that this could apply to the very moment that an attack connects with a foe. Testers let them know, and requested it remained in the game, since it would allow even more technical expression in the game.
Super impressed with the quality of this video. Wasted 0 time, tips felt accessible for someone brand new to platform fighters and still useful for a seasoned player. Hope you blow up along with this game 🙏
the examples of the tech being used in the matches reeeeally helps put in context why these tips are useful and how to use them. Really high quality stuff
I gotta say this video is crazy well structured. It feels concise, specific, and clear like it’s scripted but you also sound very natural and sync it with the gameplay well. Then the clips you select are perfect examples without any extra fluff. I’m going to be watching this a few times while I’m picking up RoA. Thanks for the help broski
Great vid! One recommendation I have: swap air grab/air parry to NSpecial/Nair respectively. The reason being, the default (air grab as nair) makes it so that you can't buffer the nair from the ground, because you'll just get a JC grab. You can't JC Parry, so mapping air parry to nair allows you to buffer it.
For shield dropping, you can also get it by holding the walk modifier and hitting down. The walk modifier prevents you from spot dodging or rolling by accident, so the window for shield drop is very generous.
Yes because it helps with turnaround grabs during tomahawk so that if you land behind your opponent you don't accidentally dash through them when attempting to turnaround grab. Has been a godsend for me in many ways, especially because I have it bound to L3 so I just push in the stick while I attempt it.
Love that you gave reasons for the tech and comparisons to other platform fighters. Made it easy to understand for someone coming from a traditional fighters background.
By far some of the best tutorials/tips for rivals2. Most people are focusing on tips for advanced platform fighters who aren't used to rivals2, not many people are making tutorials for people who are new to platform fighters all together
One other lesser-known tip: While grabbing ledge, you can fall from ledge using your Grab button, which has 2 advantages. 1. You don't need to move your stick as much to ledge dash (or instant wall jump). 2. Any other method of falling from ledge (back/down on left/right stick) locks you out of all jump for a few frames. This means that it is exclusively possible to instant wall jump earlier/faster than you can by any other method.
I'm a Platform fighter newbie, and I'm glad I found this tutorial. Sadly, the demo is already down, and I just have to wait for the full release so I can practice this techniques.
this video was really helpful!! i kinda had tangential knowledge of the existence of a lot of this stuff but wasn't sure of how to input them and the way you explained it all made it super easy to follow
To add to ledge dashing, rather than holding away to drop from ledge, use your right stick. You get no drift away from ledge and avoid the risk of fast falling.
But for this to work you would need to either claw grip or rebind another jump button and idk personally that feels weird to me. What I like to do is just get used to letting go of ledge by gently moving the left stick down, because that both avoids drifting back and leaves the left stick in a place where you barely have to move it to get the angle for the wave dash.
youre my new favorite creator for rivals 2 tips and tricks. i also love the ranno guide you put out! excited to see this channel grow and what fun stuff you put out next :D
Great video, explained all of the most important intermediate/advanced mechanics, I hope this video blows up because it will help onboard a lot of people. I have nair-nspecial binds and totally forgot about those so that was a great reminder. One thing worth noting I think; I need to verify this still works with both tilt and strong cstick, and the practicality of this varies depending on the player's controller and binds, but you can also press c-stick down (or whatever the equivalent is on your controls) or c-stick back to drop from the ledge. This can be useful because it allows you to get the theoretically most optimal ledge dash by doing c-stick down-ledgedash so you don't have to drift away from the ledge but also don't fastfall. I've used it for a long time as I play claw on a GC controller. Not crazy important because ledgedashes and misinputs on them are much more generous in this game so really only important if you care about those couple extra i-frames, still worth mentioning though I think.
I knew a lot of this from melee, BUT! Watching this made me understand why I was failing at some of these techs...I forgot you can hold back to get off ledge, how to properly hitfall, etc. Great video, great tips that are very useful, and I like how you used real game examples with it to see how it looks in quick gameplay!
These Rivals videos have been great, you can tell that you're a coach and the information and examples makes it feel really accessible, keep it up! Have you thought having a controller input overlay on screen for these? I know not everyone's bindings/controller are going to be the same, but even seeing the timings for some tech could help
Great content, gonna save this to practice this stuff. Crouch cancelling hasnt been very intuitive to me yet. But all the techs here are great stuff to learn
This was great. A lot of stuff I didn't know, especially that you retain ledge invincibility after getting off ledge if it hasn't run out and ledge dashing into shield finally lets me figure out what to do when lox just charges forward smash while I'm off stage.
Great video. As a newer player to play fighters I will definitely try and implement these. This genre is new to me and I have a lot to learn. Keep up the good work!
Great Video! One thing I would add is the use of moonwalking. You can cancel moonwalk with tilts which is great for ranno's uptilt in particular. It already moves him backward so combine that with the moonwalk tech and its like he just rolls behind his opponent with an active hitbox but without the invincibility. you can also moonwalk behind opponents to grab them from behind too!
Did not know at all about hitfall, combos I've seen high level players doing make a lot more sense with that knowledge now! Gonna have to start labbing that
Very good explanation of some of the essential tech in the game! Some feedback: Maybe show an overlay of your inputs when explaining new tech? Would make it easier to understand for newcomers. Otherwise very well produced video, looking forward to RoA2 content :)
Nice video ! By the way, there is actually an hitfall-like mechanic in Smash Ultimate. To perform it, set your right stick (the yellow one) on tilts. When you go for an aerial attack just keep your left stick down and then jump. Use your right stick to do your aerial. You ll immadiately fast fall after the attack. Its explained by the macro system of the tilts input for the right stick, a macro of : left stick direction + a button. At the end of the macro, the game rechek your left stick direction and make you fast fall. Hope you'll enjoy it and sorry for the grammaticals errors, english not my mothers language (is it correct ?) / first language. Have a nice day !
yeah but you must already be able to fast fall in order to do that. hitfalling allows you to fast fall when you normally can’t (when you’re on the way up)
Great tutorial! I would recommend setting up an input display (if possible ofc!) if you wanna take it another step further :) I already know the inputs you talk about but I could see it being harder to visualize for newer players
You can also do both a turnaround and b reverse special at the same time to reverse your momentum while attacking in the same direction you were facing already
Absolutely great guide for some old dogs like me who are in for the hype. Some reminders and helpful things to get into the game, thank you. If you ever do a video about the DI inputs in this game or how to not get juggled all the time, that would be the really nice aswell.
As someone coming from Melee, this is perfect. The game is so good at giving that Melee feeling that I was instantly able to instinctively see that most of these tricks work just in the first hour of practice, but with the improved balance and slightly forgiving buffer like P+. Maybe I'll be able to actually get out of silver 2 within a year with this one (still always gonna love Melee though, of course).
Great video! Id love to see a video covering how to do well in neutral. I noticed im getting steamrolled in queue and would love to see some ways I can protect myself and make advantages.
Two more Melee techniques that work in RoA2: ledge-cancelling and jump-cancel grabs. Not sure what the frame data on the latter is, but considering the devs included it, it's probably beneficial.
Great video overall. I actually didn't know about the full momentum nair with z. One thing i will note is that there is an easier way to shield drop than the ones you noted. if you hold down both shield buttons (L+R on gamecube controller for example) and move the control stick down, you guarantee the shield drop and not a spot dodge. doesn't matter how fast you hit the stick down, its 100% consistent. I believe it worked like that in smash 4 iirc, and it works like that in the smash ultimate HDR mod as well. It is worth noting that doing it on a surface you cant drop through will still cause a spot dodge, it doesn't disable the option all together by doing this method, but it will always work on platform.
Next tip for all of the ultimate kids: hog the ledge. Earlier kills and sets up those rinse and repeat edge guard situations for laggy recoveries onto stage.
Oh that nair trick is really nice. Often when I'm fleet combing off stage. I'll forward air and need the Nair to followup and kill, but I input another forward air.
One thing I think is niche to this game but might be something worth adding perhaps in a new video would be Baby dashing which seems to be a tech unique to this game. Baby dashing is flicking forward very quickly to get a almost wavedash like movement option
Thank you for the clarification on ledge dashing. I could have sworn that someone official stated that there is no galint on ledge dashes, but I can clearly see the invulnerability white frames in the video. Either that, or I misinterpreted what the person was saying...or they changed it.... Either way, thank you for the video!
Oh so I guess fullhop or high jump instant nairs are really powerful with Ranno. You can either hitfall them or safely disengage if the opponent shields.
amazing video ! Also you can't cancel jab 3 of any character into a tilt, they also have a lot of knockback so outside of low percent you won't combo off of it but you can definitively kill with most of them at ledge.
My suggestion for a guide would be a beginner guide on how to get into these kind of games, I haven't been able to find one that actually explains how you should move with your controller etc and I don't really get what people mean by tilt move and nair. I like that you included air dodging. Even though it seems basic, unless you played rivals 1 it seems weird to air dodge to further your recovery
