Another example of Euro-American influence of their version of environmentalism, ignoring every indigenous tribes way of life. A way of life that was around way before Europeans came to the America's.

Extinction of animals caused by man has been going on since we arrived. There is no excuse for hunting whales. Let us not forget that before colonization, aboriginal groups hunted to extinction a number of prehistoric creatures. Who actually can rationally claim in today's world that hunting whales is needed for cultural reason. BS.

To deprive the Makah of their whaling rights is to needless deprive them of their culture. Their whaling is done in a way that does not harm the whale population in a meaningful way. The opposition to the tribe's hunting is based off of their own disgust as if that reflects any meaningful ecological harm. To those that torment the communal whalers of Neah Bay shame on you.

Just because it's part of the culture doesn't mean we should respect and allow this barbaric practice. In some parts of the world cannibalism and human sacrifice were openly accepted and important cultural and religious traditions, as were the burning of widows. Thankfully logic prevailed and we realised those practices were barbaric and unnecessary as whaling is. Just because it's a cultural practice doesn't make it acceptable. And even if it doesn't impact the eco system it's still cruel and unnecessary. Or should we allow fox hunting again in the UK and cock fighting because they are part of cultures.

This is ridiculous. Times have changed, cultures have changed, the environment has changed - it is absurd in the 21 century that anyone, any culture, any human group purposely kill a whale. There is about 20,000 grey whales - if humanity got wiped out to 20, 000 members we would be appalled - but life, other than us, would be blessed.

So you kill whales because culturally your people needed to kill them for their fat and meat. Now its 2021. Now you kill them for pleasure. It satisfies you and your people and you can brag about it with your elders. Its ok, im not judging you and your tribe. We are sapiens and we have been doing this for a over a hundred thousand years. Its just now sapiens cover the globe and we are more efficient at killing then ever before. If you really respect these creatures, you would help them survive, not kill them for pleasure or because your great grandparents used to do it.

You can have meat with other means. for info whaling stop in 1920 and the elders were against it to resume it. I do know that killing is fun together but this is not necessary. you can have fun with other fish. I give to sea shepherd. There is only about 2,200 of my people left. The Makah have a bit more, and have a bit of a bigger rez. The last of my people are dying. That's why the Quinault, Hoe and Makah made an alliance but Quileute are past our point of survival now unless we commit incest. Of all the 800 or so tribes now, coastal Salish and the other PNW and Alaskan natives were green peace before green peace. We were stewarts, and care takers. Last time I took my grandmother to Seattle she just cried. This land has been utterly destroyed. I've been a lot of places and beautiful countries yet WA state remains on the top of that list. But definitely not now. Now it seems to only in our ceded lands.
Do you know the Olympics has species that are no longer anywhere else? Unique species. The Hoh rain forest exted from Alaska to California before Europeans and others. Now we protect it. Same goes for the Olympic National Park, there are hundreds of acres of land that rarely sees humans. Its not even fully mapped. You ppl came running for our help when we almost lost Chinook and King salmon. My grandfather proposed and spoke about banning clear cut logging even though he made an incredible wood empire on his own. It was tribal people who saved 1 nearly extinct owl and 3 birds. We have Members video tapes of when fkn hunters came and stole Orca calves from their mothers. Lining the beach with tears in our eyes. It was horrific. But we were the ones that blew that whistle too. Without a doubt, We will fight this to the end and we will win. Chief Seattle said it before, "maybe our time is done, but remember us when you find your paths begin to parallel. " that's the best translation, Duwamish doesn't have the same words and such as English does but that was his meaning.
For everyone else whom supports our traditional hunts but not commercial please come out. We built cabins on 1st beach. You can buy whale products (it's our main source of income ON the rez) we make oils, we smoke it, we still make our traditional brooms from the "teeth", we have totums made from bones are carved with clan names, I am working on trying to make a totum with names. Or family crests maybe, I think it would be cool. We have an amazing restaurant (my grandparents) we have a harbor and ceded ocean front and take people in our canoes as depicted in the video above, we teach to weave cedar baskets. The Makah have an unmatched technique. You can hold water in them, even boil water in them. PLEASE come and learn, remember us and our culture. Thank you
