    • @MrTxawjcoj

      Tools of old were made of hemp twine attached to wooden hoops and long poles... it’s just much easier with today’s technology. A thinner wire hoop net gives less resistance against the fast current.

    There is a wonderful play put on in Oregon maybe 20 years ago called "Ghosts of Cellilo" and it tells the story of the falls, second only to Niagra and the customs of 6 tribes who fished
    the falls every year on platforms & made dipnets. The fish were huge & fed lots of families all year. The Dalles Dam covered the falls, but they still are there under the high water. I am
    so glad to see this beautiful video of people still fishing in the old way and catching beautiful big salmon.

    On the Klamath river tribal lands they extend a gill net from bank to bank and take every fish over 4" in girth....the downfall in salmon numbers is directly tied to the native Americans taking all the spawning fish out of the rivers.

  • @7iesz568
    @7iesz568 3 роки тому +1

    Would be a great and safe idea if they left kayaks tied to the platforms beneath them, in this case let’s hope they are experienced enough to handle one. I’m sure it’ll help and that way they have security and safety when enjoying their life long tradition.

      oh so using traditional techniques that's been used for years isn't fishing? where as a rod is? dude you know nothing about fishing then along with others. Fishing can be using hand gathering, spearing, netting, angling and trapping. But whatever say this ain't fishing your ass couldn't do it without a native telling you how to do it. Otherwise call all the people on boats in the ocean using nets not fisherman.

    I have no problem with tribal rights until they use modern devices that weren't used back when the treaties were written. Forty foot aluminum net handles, plywood planks, monofilament gill nets, metal spears, 1,000,000 candle powered spotlights and gasoline-powered boats should not be used.

    • @boygirlandadad5814
      @boygirlandadad5814 7 років тому +5

      Definitely Cortez because it's not what was going on when the treaties were written. When the treaties were written
      They were intended to be modified every five years to keep up with changing times (technologies). Now what we have is over fishing. The tribes take and take and take.
      In tribal waters around here the over harvest massively and it's not for sustenance anymore either otherwise they wouldn't be knocking people's doors selling 5 gallon pails of walleye filets. Use a torch and a traditional spear instead of a 1,000,000 candle power spotlight, motorboat, and a huge metal spear.
      Gill nets go totally around the Keweenaw peninsula. I once heard a tribal member bragging about the 40 pound laker he caught. He said they get quite a few big once like that but the break off and sink to the bottom. Waste.
      Copper Harbor use to have a really cool sport fishery for Splake. It's over now. Gill nets everywhere. In the fall you can still catch the planted fish from the spring because they can still swing through the nets. By spring they are all gone.
      In Escanaba two tribal members over harvested 70,000 pounds of fish. In the end they were fined about 300 dollars each and lost fishing privileges for 3 years. I know one of them was back fishing the next year.
      The tribe once told our fishing organization that their science knew exactly how many fish they could take out of a certain lake because their methods were so sound and their people so honest. We paid them a visit while they were spearing. When we talked to the boss he was super nervous and said they were trying to shut things down because it was getting "way out of hand". When we asked him what that means he walked away and wouldn't speak to us. Our relationship with the tribe was over at that point. They never spoke to us again.
      I read some of your other posts and some other posts here. Sorry but no white guilt here. The natives americans are a defeated nation. However I understand why some of you cry about it but I do not care. Make your way in this world just like everyone else. On one hand we are white devils but on the other hand you have no problem sticking out your hands for government money.
      Fred Dakota gifted you with with being able to open casinos and still you cry. Such pathetic greed.
      And before you totally try to flame me just know that I could be using these treaty rights. But I am a human and I stand on my own two feet and make my way in this world like everyone else should and don't cry because of skin color or origins.
      If ever you have a moment of clarity and look from the outside in you will see what a pathetic joke the tribes have become.

    • @seajay3472
      @seajay3472 7 років тому +8

      First off you're blaming 95% natives for over fishing and being greedy. There's more and more fishing on the columbia river where a lot of the people complain about natives. Gill nets have been used traditionally from hundreds of tribes around the world it's not just an american thing. If you want to talk about over fishing blame the gill netters in the ocean who overrrrr fish to sell in stores everywhere. They pretty much wipe a lot a good amount of them before they even touch the fresh water.
      You haven't even considered how white people wiped alll the fish out till there was nothing left. My mom of 57 years old has been on the columbia river since her 20's and has seen the good the bad the ugly. She's been fishing since there was no fish in the whole river. For a solid month she only caught one out of all the fishing crews out there. If it wasn't for tribes like yakama, nez perce, puyullp and another one putting in fish hatcherys guess what PAL, no fish. No salmon. This is a right to fish on the river and if no ones out there exercising the right then the white man obviously will walk all over us.
      Adapting is what we have to do on the river. The river is too swift now and days to use anything smaller than a 14 ft boat. Only on calm days can you use a raft which both my mom and sister have done. Which I'd doubt you'd ever do or have any knowledge about. if you so want to talk about the past and how we should fish like before then you should go back to candles, using horses, fires, and no electronics if you want to live in the past so badly.
      Talking about casinos you have no idea of the benefits they provide to reservations. Did you know legends casino donates money to schools all the time? they give out school supplies with backpacks to kids who need them. They provide school teams with new uniforms and equipment. They help them build new gyms, fields, and courses. But again I doubt you've looked into what tribes do with casino money and think all members receive a big ol fat check every month.
      You think its about greed? many fisherman have lost their lives on this river. Just last month I lost a cousin who drowned. Guess what, it was never talked about on the news or anywhere except the yakama hearld. Before you think the way we fish now is easy and hasn't took lives. Obviously you're in need or more research.

    • @boygirlandadad5814
      @boygirlandadad5814 7 років тому +2

      SeaJay McConville nets made out of synthetic materials that extend for miles and are hauled by large gasoline driven boats don't date back through world history.
      If you look into where promised casino money goes you may notice there is some major bait and switch going on. Ever notice the state of our schools or hear how they are hurting for money? And no, I don't think that everyone gets a big fat tribal casino check, so don't even suggest that's what I think.
      And I don't think you heard me when I mentioned that I have native blood in me and could exercise my rights. I choose not to. Why? Because I don't take shelter because of what my lineage is. We are all humans. We want to be treated equal but only if it fits our needs.
      And talk about educating yourself on n subjects; one of the prior posts talked about how small pox was spread on purpose as a method of biological warefare. Well if you research it you'll find that is total myth. It doesn't do anyone any good to spread lies and only hurts the cause you are fighting for because of loss of credibility.
      And I'm sorry about your relative drowning and it not making national news. I've had a few friends die working and their deaths didn't make anything more than the obituary. I don't understand why you think a person who died while netting fish is newsworthy

      It's their continent! If you tell them they cannot fish there you're violating their rights and marginalising them.
      I bet you give money to support causes in Africa. How about do justly by those from who you stole an entire continent.

The material used varies over time, shape, structure, techniques... you think the first people that settled in that area just had it figured out from the start? No, they built and refined their techniques and technology over hundreds of years... always using the best tools and technology for a successful harvest... stop being butthurt by some guys netting salmon and surely eating it... how many fresh fish have you eaten or wasted? Fish that were harvested using commercial techniques that produce mainly by catch

    Those who came here from Europe for a new life, stole the land and pushed the Natives into poverty and wanted to cut off their livelihoods. Your ancestors must be proud!

      That happened all over the globe to all kinds of people's. if you do your homework you'll find the life of the Indian was not a fairy tale storybook there was mass genocides, slavery ,'starvation ,headhunters. and some tribe's would not be here at all if not for the European. just sayin
