    Hunting it in canoes what traditional harpoons is one thing but using a 50 caliber gun is not traditional

    But is the harvesting of the great whale necessary for tribal existence?

      You do realize that in some places one has to hunt and fish to live? Did you see the McDonalds, Safeway and Costco in Neah Bay when you were there? 🤪

      @@Mauser1965 Tons of my family lives in Neah bay, and I still stand where I stand, my grandmothers brother had to come to Lynwood for Dialysis because there wasn't one locally in Neah. Hunt and fish till the wheels fall off brother.. just not whales.

      Are you going to ask others to leave the cows, sheep and chickens alone?

      @@Mauser1965cows and chickens are bred to be eaten and are domesticated. They are also killed to a standard, that is recognised as humane and as painless as possible.
      None of this applies to whales.
      Tradition is peer pressure from dead people, quit making excuses for evil.

    What gives the environmentalists the right to lord it over the Makah tribe? The enviros are so egotistical and arrogant.

      The whales were ok before there were "environmentalists".

      It’s not arrogance. Time moves on. What was done long ago can’t always be done in the future. 10,000 years ago we all could live this way. Today, populations have increased, technology has become more powerful. Preserving whales is probably more important than living in the past. If only we lived isolated from the world in such a way that our actions affected no one but ourselves…

      What makes it right for the Makah to hunt animals in a cruel and barbaric way when there are plenty of other food sources

    Egregious. Some traditions come at too high of a price.
    Save the whales from human greed, we don’t need to take their lives anymore

    In the past, it was a tradition to own slaves too, so you’re trying to bring that back! It was done during slavery times.

      Oh dont you compare whaling to slavery those Are two separate things and whaling is a hunt for food and providing food for people

    • @mantykarhu
      @mantykarhu Місяць тому

      Ya, but slaves provided food and much more. It’s not the same, but there’s something to ponder in this comparison. Not everything done long ago is sustainable, wise and moral today.

    This will open whaling to other countries, aka Japan and China. If it’s a traditional provision, from the 1800’s then do it like it was done then, no power boats, no harpoons. Use the Traditional wood canoe and a spear, then bring it back in with the canoe. No power boat for hauling. Oh and no Coast Guard to rescue when it gets real. It’s all about tradition, right!
