Controversial grey whale hunt approved for Washington State's Makah Tribe

- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S. has granted the Makah Tribe of Washington state the approval to harvest as many as 25 grey whales over the next 10 years.
Before any hunt starts, NOAA Fisheries and the Tribe must agree on the expedition, under the Whaling Convention Act, and the Tribe must apply for and receive a hunting permit.
As Kylie Stanton reports, the Makah Tribe says it's an important part of their culture, but critics are questioning whether it's really necessary.

I remember their last whale kill. They were jumping up and down on it, hooping and hollering like idiots. No respect was shown to the whale. Then one guy cut off a piece of blubber and stuffed it in his mouth, and spit it out seconds later. Respect for whales? No, not from this tribe.
If people don't appreciate what they eat they starve themselves in the end, and will suffer more then the organism they are eating as modernity does all over the world. APPRECIATION SAVES NATIONS. Looking that the comment section, it seems that lots of people are familiar with how lost people are when it comes to common sense. Let us pray they have it or find it if they don't. Their souls survival depends upon it, as well as their physical survival. The whale will outlive them if they don't cross over to clear just conscience they just set back its return with ignorance.

I'm Metis and I feel the same way! Many cultures hunted wales back in the day. But they stopped because we have learned how cruel it was. Why can't they learn and have compassion as well! This looks very bad for them.

Why is it so sad ? How will yours or anyone else's life change in any away if they kill a handful of whales of the 10s of thousands out there ? Isnt there far more serious problems out there that would be a far better use of your time and energy ?

Agreed. That is why this is an important decision that educated people can understand and agree with. The decision is no fluke, and their ample numbers should allow the revitalisation of an important tradition.

I'm Tulalip and we were with them for the last hunt, we didn't eat the thing, we made a massive mess on the beach and left it covered in empty 2 l soda bottles, mostly orange soda, I remember really distinctly. People didn't like it, they tried to eat it, even the elders didn't like it, and the young people? Certainly didn't! We didn't treat the animal with respect, we had stormy out there talking about how after 2 hours the whale turned and "gave itself" to us. Like no dude it's an animal and it wants to live. It doesn't have the higher brain function to say, oh, this is a spiritual practice and I will give myself to the people. It's an animal. That would be like chasing an elk for 2 hours and the elk lays down. It's a thing, humans have always been endurance hunters. We are the terminators of the animal world, we're not as fast, but we will follow you for days until you fall over. So I don't know why this is going to happen again, but when it happens we're going to go back to not doing it again for another 25 years because it's going to be a freaking disaster like it was last time. Do not let anybody tell you that the tribe needs to do this, we didn't, we don't, and we don't like whale! Nobody wanted to eat the freaking thing. I remember I was in school on the reservation at the time, just a kid, and I was the only kid out there who was against it and this was back when Snapple came in glass bottles? Bottles? And we had a machine school grounds? So they would get bottles, drink them all during lunch and then fling them at me during recess. There were weeks where I was just pelted with glass and my native teachers didn't do anything about it, it took the one white teacher on campus to say, hey, she can't be out here because she's being targeted with violence. I think all the native teachers basically just wanted me to learn my lesson and shut my mouth and I wasn't going to. And I won't this time either, I'm going to start speaking out against this and I'm going to bang the drum and try to remind everybody because we have pictures of last time, of what a disaster it was. There's a reason we haven't done it again. Clearly people have forgotten what that reason is. The reason is, it was a disaster and nobody wanted it. We are not the Inuit in Alaska, lettuce isn't $16 a head, we don't need to eat like that like the Inuit do, Just like last time we're not going to freaking eat it. Everybody's going to go have a little bite and try to wash the taste out with 2 gallons of freaking soda that we're all going to leave on the beach again and have to hire a group to come clean up after us. Just like last time. It sincerely makes me sick that ain't nobody in the tribe is going, oh hey remember last time we did this? Was it a good experience? Or was it a really really negative one? Because I guarantee you, I've got pictures myself, there were pictures in our paper uploaded digitally, there is no barrier for people to look up the results of our whale hunt 25 years ago. And they are choosing not to, and that makes me angry. What's going to make this time different? Nothing.

We need to get past the Disney version of history.
Slavery, misogyny, rape, and murder are just as much a part of traditional Makah culture as whaling. Probably more so. Only slave owners were allowed to hunt whales to show their _domination_ over everyone and everything. Notice any women on the boats? Guess what they have to do while the men are whaling.

And they are terrible. They want to open a commercial whaling center to sell whale meat to Japan and make gross cheap trinkets from whale bone to sell to tourists while they've made it illegal to speak out against whaling in their land. Not that anyone would. The last woman who tried was fired, and her dog was kidnapped and killed. They are less intelligent than the animals they want to kill.
Only one was killed. After they harpooned it 4 times, shot it dozens of times, jumped up and down on it like they did something great...and it still took an entire day of unimaginable pain as it bled out and died chained to a boat. These great examples of humanity are treated as folk heroes.

Wonder how much of that whale will be sold quietly and no one will say a word about it. If they want to traditionally hunt a whale, do it the proper way. Don’t get towed in & out of harbour paddling only for a photo op, don’t use technology to find it, don’t use a firearm to kill it.
