      I like my PL-330 too but the too soft, too imprecise tuning wheel is irritating. Also it lacks a separate BFO wheel which would make SSB tuning easier.
      OTOH it's a compact, very sensitive radio packed with useful features. The best bargain for a cheap SSB-capable SW radio IMHO.
      Yes, backlit buttons would be nice too...

      to be honest SSB sounds terrible on DSP radios, you really have to get the Tecsun PL-660/680 to appreciate how amazing SSB sounds and how using ECSS is a pure joy on those radios compared to crap sounding SSB on DSP radios.

    You said you are in the London region? Too bad it didn’t stop at 648kHz. This is the Radio Caroline frequency and it should have picked it up. Please hand tune the station(s) to see if it receives 648kHz. Caroline is now the most listned to station on MW in the UK within its target area. Hand tuning, preferably during daylight hours would make your reviews so much more valuable. Specially for the MW enthusiasts that might be interested in products if it is capable of making a difference. Regards, Willem, Holland.

    Hmm It's a rather quirky radio. I bought the green backlit HanRongDa HRD-757 version back in April for £58 total. It's set far too bright imo. Also oddly on MW and SW the bandwidth button doesn't work only with FM mode so maybe there can be a firmware update ? Sensitivity wise yes very good though

    I love a radio with SSB but sadly all the DSP radios sound really horrible on SSB.
    Using USB/LSB on a SW station works great to reduce the effects of fading signals and it's also excellent for the DX'er who wants to weed out a weak signal close to a stronger station, it gives you that selectivity no DSP radio can provide with filters alone.
    For anyone who doesn't know, this practice of using SSB on commercial AM stations is called ECSS, one of the best portables you will find for this is the Analogue Tecsun PL-660 and the PL-680, the 680 having better audio from the speaker and better LW/MW performance. But their SSB audio is just Amazing and you can still buy the PL-660 and 680 new today and the 660 and 680 have a real SYNC detector which kind of does the same as ECSS. The 660 SYNC is a little bit better but ECSS still performs better and once used to tuning the BFO on a commercial station you'll never want to use a DSP radio again !

    • @o00scorpion00o
      @o00scorpion00o 2 місяці тому

      @@kwdavids1 I have the PL-330 and I only kept it because it has SSB in such a tiny package and ETM actually works well at scanning stations.
      The major issue with the 330 is the chuffing when tuning, I'm not sure if the Eton has this but DSP just ruins SSB and you really have to listen to a radio like the Tecsun PL-680 on SSB to realise how incredibly bad DSP radios sound on SSB and this also mean ECSS is not possible or sounds really bad.
      ECSS is an excellent tool for the serious DX'er and radio enthusiast.

    Na minha avaliação, os pontos consideráveis são...
    Pontos positivos: Tamanho compacto. Teclado iluminado. Som relativamente bom pelo tamanho. VHF/UHF de 25 a 999. Recepção boa, mas perde pro XHDATA D-808 por exemplo.
    Pontos negativos: Filtro de banda só em VHF/UHF e (FM, que não faz sentido nenhum ter). Muita interferência em FM, mesmo de emissoras com sintonia bem distantes. Consumo elevado de bateria (comparado ao XHDATA D-808 por exemplo). Knob de sintonia em uma posição ruím e com barulho incômodo. E o principal, o inacreditável, bem pior do que não ter SSB, ele tem squelch só na banda aérea, nem tô acreditando, se eu soubesse desse detalhe, não teria comprado!

    5:00 I cringe at using a pen with a sharp edge as a pointer in case it hurts the screen. A yellow 2B pencil with a broken point is safer :-) 12:20 Your bloody pigeons! .I just threw a shoe out of the window, up at the chimney, at mine and there was nothing there this time. Sport on AM, CHinese on SW that is how it is these days. It makes one wonder if there is a market for AM/SW broadcast listening devices these days if you are a Brit. It's funny to hear the music they like in the med or chase an old rock song through the drift ... but as for a day to day, no use at all. It's a techie thing. I take my Raddy 320 out just to play. It's good to have such a radio in a beer garden when you are billy no mates, folk see you laughing all of a sudden and the world opens up. Not a kitchen item for The Wife though. Thanks for testing the radio. I still have a few questions on this radio:
    - It would have been interesting to see how the squelch works on the Air Band, but you turned it off in the demo - which is unpractical , because nobody wants to listen to white noise. The other Bluetooth based new Raddy radios have an annoying Air Band squelch noise tail, which I was interested if this radio does it too. Does its squelch really mute instantly after the signal?
    - it would be interesting if you can place the radio somewhere at a spot with a good receiption (low noise level) and listen to its receiving audio via your smartphones headphones if the radio can stream its audio via Bluetooth? That would be a very nice and practical feature. Is that possible of is the BT only for controll and audio input, that would be a no go for me?
    - what happens on shortwave if you enter a frequency that is not within the 5 KHz raster? Can you only not go in between the channels with the scroll wheel or also via manual input, which isn't very practical but might be helpful in some situations
    I also agree that SSB and RDS would have been a feature that could probably be implemented without in todays DSP age, but they didn't - a missed opportunity

    • @CB-RADIO-UK
      @CB-RADIO-UK  2 місяці тому

      As for the squelch on air band you wont need it switched on for a freq or mem scan as the radio mutes anyway. If you tune to a certain freq you can use it but you have to be aware of the slow AGC control on this radio as it causes a slight delay. The squelch prob wont help.

    • @n1vca
      @n1vca 2 місяці тому

      @@CB-RADIO-UK why would I not need an active squelch, e.g. monitoring 121.5? If the agc is causing the squelch to open so delayed that I will be missing a part of the transmission, then this is a serious design flaw, disqualifying the radio entirely. I have a bunch of scanners, handhelds and SDRs and none of these receivers have these problems, so that means this radio has not been designed properly. Shame because I like it's form factor and remote capability if it can also send its audio via Bluetooth to the smartphone.

    • @kwdavids1
      @kwdavids1 2 місяці тому +1

      Of all my air band radios, the 757 seems to have the loudest noise when there is no signal. So you really need the squelch. Unfortunately there's no level setting for it and it cuts off moderate to week transmissions.

    • @n1vca
      @n1vca 2 місяці тому

      @@kwdavids1 Thanks for some real-life experience. That is sad that hey don't have different squelch level and the automatism doesn't set the level right. I like the raios form factor but if it can't even handle proper squelch operation, this is a no-go for me.

    I have the HanRongDa HRD-757 version. It comes in green or orange display and different packaging (no antenna or earbuds). I found the Raddy manual to be awful, one of the worst ones I've seen. The table of contents page number are even wrong.
    One think that I think is important is that the bandwidth control doesn't support MW/SW where you really need it. I get stations +/- 10 kHz of the actual station. The user has to make an extra effort to figure out the actual frequency of a station. I found MW reception quite poor although FM/SW to be good. Strong local stations bleed into the SW bands, and there are a couple of birdies (at least) on SW. Yes you can set the temperature scale, but the radio forgets the setting when you turn it off. You pointed to the display talking about the clock, but the clock wasn't on the display; it's never visible when the radio is on. And the radio doesn't have a VFO -- it's a DSP radio.
