Radio technology at its peak and best. I have said good bye to my boat anchor radios like WJ8718A and JRC NRD92 and purchased a prior version of this radio. Extremely portable and easy to use 🎉. It picks up everything that my Icom ic705 receives 😮
I’m so glad you found this radio Paul! I’ve had mine a few months now and love it! To correct the FT8 lag, press the CALFT8 button as soon as a cycle has finished and the lag will be corrected. Also make sure the clock is accurately set by long pressing the RADIO button. The clock doesn’t keep good time and has to be reset frequently.
There are 3 waterfall screen modes. The first, with a waterfall in the lower half of the screen. Touch the lower part, the waterfall surface, the screen and scale will change. Then you will be able to see the CW and RTTY decoding on the screen. Likewise, in that screen mode, they will be able to see RDS data in FM band. The third modality of the screen is "retro scale", our old radios devices :) A nice greeting.
Thanks Paul! You provided a very good demonstration! I would very much enjoy using this radio. I'm afraid it is not currently in my price range. Enjoy, my friend!
Thank you, great review. I have a modified Chinese clone of the old version 1 in a cheap case and I am already totally blown away by the noise reduction, which is really the best algorhythm I have ever heard. You can find your DSP2 for around 300-320€ on different websites and now that I see that it reacts faster and has more features than my old one, I seriously consider getting this really nice verion now. I wonder why you didn't switch to your magnetic loop on the LW/MW noise demo, because it should be fine even while the display is turned on, because the noise is mainly in the electric field, not in the magnetic field. You accidentally skipped one feature, it is the ANF button, which is the Automatic Notch Filter, that also works very well, taking out any constant frequency carrier instantly. Also you didn't explain the various AM modes that are very handy ... toggeling from regular AM to syncronous AM (DSB/LSB/USB) which helps getting the distortion on multipath down, which decodes just fine even if the carrier is being notched out by multipath, staying locked on to the carrier with a delay for many miliseconds before it starts locking out, finding the next carrier to sync to. The carrier based squelch on the Air Band also works great. I totally agree with you that this little radio can outperform all of its peers and even many serious amateur radio rigs for a thousand bucks and more. My sloppy old Malahit 1 clone needs an FM BC stop filter in order to have a perfect 10m band reception, else WFM images are coming up, but I hope this newer version comes with an improved preselection. Any experience with that? The Russian hams RX9CIM/R6DCY/R6DAN (malahiteam.com) should be awarded for this design ... and this manufacturer did a very nice but expensive implementation of their technology and software.
The video with the best explanation of the Malahit DSP2. I recently received SAQ on 17.2 KHz from Sweden here in DL and was also able to decode CW with it. 73 de DL1LAJ Andreas
The major problem with the DSP series of receivers has been noise from the screen, as well as sensitivity drops when the receiver is not being handheld. To have to turn the screen off while listening is a major issue since a main part of the experience of using these receivers is to be able to observe reception on the screen. It is interesting that the quality of the cabinet has improved markedly, but the basic issues with reception and noise have continued, even though various tools are provided in the software for shaping the signal and audio. As I have written elsewhere, many standard portable radios, such as those from Tecsun, have the ability to very quickly here what remains on shortwave without having to jump through all the hoops, even though the software options are numerous. Finally, the price: $400+ is WAY too high for this receiver. Some of us who have followed the Malachit/e receivers for years still have DSP-2 receivers upgraded to the final firmware level before the Russian originators started making the DSP-3 unit, and these DSP-2 units are essentially the same as this $400+ radio.
Hand capacitance can be addressed, and should not be used to despise this receiver. Shielding of the display could be better, I give you that. I like the aluminum construction, great feature to cheap plastic, and adds durability and shielding, and more than likely, better reception.
You can not compare the best Tecsun with this SDR2 ... I agree the display noise can be annoying when receiving LW/MW and lower shortwave with a nearby electrical antenna, but the signal/noise, is usually extremely good and the possibilities of filtering voice and decoding data is outstanding. Also once tuned to a certain station I turn the display off to save power anyway. I totally agree with you on the price, the old DSP2 is the same it had been much less expensive, but you cen get this unit from a very reliable Chinese dealer for 300€ with an onder firmware and 320€ with the current 2.4 firmware. I think yours was also some 260 or 280€ from Russia with shipping? So 320€ for the one with this beautiful case is kind of OK when you consider what this liitle box can do. I just hope they come with the original Alps encoder and not this crappy cheap stuff I had to switch out on my old version 1 after the first few weeks, which is a nightmare to solder because of this multi-layer board that can easiely be damaged.

Thanks Paul, should have bought the Malahit II rather the my Raddy RF919. I have the original full software Malahit one I bought off Bangood a few years ago. It has allot of potential, but the build quality is lacking, also no instructions built up a huge learning curve. Your new radio seems to solve most of my gripes and looks like a good value for the money. Turn the Noise reduction on , the best part of the software, it works well at nullification of lightning from nearby storms. 73! Have a great day!
I believe you will not regret. I am so happy with this radio. You can see also my fist Malachite clone in history of this video, but this one is a huge improvement. 😉👍

When highlighted you can change the filter by turning the volume knob.
Thanks Paul for your video! I own this radio for a while now and it´s phantastic. As Erwin said, you must set the Min SNR Ratio to somewhat about 25-30 to decode. It decodes FT8 also nicely. One of the best features besides the NR is the built in BiasT, so it is possible to use active antennas like the FA305FT directly. They can be supportet with 5V (RADIO>PWR ANT enabled). the stand you showed is available on ebay, however if you look for a Malahit DSP2 stand you will find a nice one that you can slot the DSP2 into, I bought one and am very happy with it. It is very sturdy and the MALAHIT DSP-2 on the front sets it off.. However If you have installed the little rubber feet then this may cause a problem fitting the DSP2 into the holder.

The FT-8 "lag" isn't a problem - the radio collects all the data in one FT-8 burst, and is already collecting the next data set as it processes the previous data for display. That the whole processor appears to be dedicated to processing for a second or less doesn't seem like a problem to me, only if it loses data - which I don't think it does.
At 42:55 you can seem the mode is USB and not CW. The CW decoder maybe works only in CW mode (and not in USB mode). It depends, how the software is written.

Been playing with an original Russian DSP2 almost 3 years now, got it in 2021. I have upgraded firmware along the way. Mine is also the best receiver I have owned, beating the SDRPlay using the same Mirics chip by virtue of the incredible NR and NB , no contest comparing it to my older stuff like an Icom R71A. The clone does have the advantage of a better front firing speaker and dual antenna inputs while the Russian has an easily replaceable 18650 battery and I prefer the knobs on the front.
A few easily correctable user errors: 1. When receiving NDBs, use CW mode, not SSB. If you use CW mode the frequency display will be correct, otherwise not. 2. When decoding CW with the built-in decoder, it should be obvious to use CW mode, not SSB mode. Do not expect fantastic results using the built-in CW decoder. These decoders are seldom good for decoding CW. Also turn OFF any dsp signal processing, like noise reduction etc. Noise reduction is never good when decoding CW or digital signals, like FT8 etc. 3. In CW mode, lower filter bw will also help, at least if you are able to decode morse by ears.
Realy good design, better then the original but for 400$ I would expect screen interference to be fixed Also closed source firmware is a stop for me, sdrs have to be open source because if they are not u are locked to what manufacterer gives u
I wonder if a little foil shielding, grounded to that chassis, behind or near the screen would cut back some of that noise. Otherwise this looks like an amazing little radio!
I just saw the price. For that amount , I want something big and bulky lol. Or, I would want it to have an audio input and output that could let me use it as an inline noise reduction appliance on audio output of any transceiver.
I have an earlier version of the Malahit, and while I like the radio, the build quality was bad. The DSP2 looks much better -- have you been inside yet?
I think the design is based on RSP1 leaked schematics, which if I remember corecly also had this gap Until this radio will use the same receiver as rsp1, there will be this gap
Thanks - I thought that perhaps for some reason this range was "forbidden" to listen to... In my opinion, one should be able to listen to transmissions on any frequency. But then, perhaps there are regions of the world where it is not so (e.g., invasive, controlling govt.).
Hello, Paul. This radio is ok, but best of all try to get the original radio from the Russian developers MALAHIT DSP3 and that's when you will really feel the beauty from the radio! Thanks for the video, hello from Russia, 73!
To bad it has no band pass filters and can't get anything on LW, 160 or 80M without interference from strong AM BCB stations unless you use external filters. It works really well on 40M and up though. Also there needs to be a more complete user manual that tells what all the settings do and what all the icons on the screen are for. Even the Kindle book from Amazon is not complete!
I'm not too happy with mine but maybe it's my limitations and not so much the radio's. I am constantly switching between all the way down to mediumwave stations and all the way up to UHF. And much in between. Problem is when you do those changes it's hard to remember which of all the many settings you have to get just right to be able to hear anything on the particular band selection you've made. For instance if I'm in HF, listening to something like shortwave and then want to switch all the way up to UHF ham band, (like maybe 468 mHz) I have to do a lot of changes or I might not hear anything at all. I was listening on my Kenwood ham handheld transceiver just the other day to 468.200 repeater station and decided to see how good this Malahit would pick up the same signal. Well my friends, you have to do a lot more than just change the mode from AM to to Narrow FM!! I had to get quite a few settings just right to hear the 468.200 repeater. It took me several minutes to push all the right screen buttons to hear it. Just before changing to the 468.200 station I had been listening to a local mediumwave broadcast and then I had to fidget with it again to be able to go back to listening to that once again after I finally got the ham repeater on the radio. Basically I'm just going to have to write down all the fussy little adjustments for changing over all over the spectrum. And I noticed that with local FM broadcast, you have to get things just right for that too. Lots of little settings that make a huge difference. This is a complex radio and is not for beginners in any way.
Damn, these things keep getting more and more expensive. I'm gonna pass on this one. There is so little to listen to, that it's just not worth it anymore.
Ham is virtually DEAD!. No one is experimenting like they "SHOULD BE" outside of the actual band plans that'll be inaccessible do to enemy/gov't "jamming" anyway. I have been in radio since 1977... Fancy screen and mult-function menus...BUT really, NO improvements in reception or transmission. AND too many have gone down the rabbit hole of digital FT8...THe Rube Goldberg "way" of doing the Internet.
Greetings: About $5 bills, yep. Definitely quite a bit on the out of my allowance range. I suppose I will have 2 sollicite more chores and B a good boy so I can get my allowance back.
still a little over priced for a chinese clone should be 300.00 that is still high .it wont decode apco 25 digital signals so it is still limited to only analog signals not good .but if you dont need it as a scanner its pretty good but they need to lower the price.thanks for this video
Hello, I have a Malahit-DSP2 with Firmware 2.40. How can I receive in the 23cm band. I am passionate about radio frequency beginner level. Thank you for your time. 73!
that Noise Reduction (NR) makes that sound like talking through a waterfall, the NR in the Icom IC-7300 doesn't do that. i think Icom has the better NR. this "malahit dsp2" appears to be a good receiver but not better than the receiver in the Icom 7300. else i think this Malahit DSP2 could be one of the best handheld portable radio receivers.
Interesting thing that new version DSP3 hardware is much cheaper than this clone, DSP3 is around 220Eur. Just now, with all geopolitical reasons it is not ethical to buy from them.
I wonder what it is like on VHF? Especially above 400 MHz. Usually all these Malachites are extremely stupid on VHF. 0.3 µV is terribly low sensitivity at such frequencies. It is not clear why such ranges at all with such sensitivity? I can assume that this is useful in terms of pricing🤭
Greetings: Well I countrd my scrounged change. I doubt less than $14 will get me 1 of these. I wonder if I told them I am a semi-retired homeless vet, they would donate 1? Probably not.
@@OM0ET I just tried and can confirm this! 😊 now I can change my scan mon page for airband from 5 kHz into 8.33 steps. Thanks! But still there is an issue with the frequency display because the Chinese software has problems with the European raster. So you are not able to type desired frequencies.
I have DSP2 and mine has that setting!! But why people are so many people concerned about this anyway? They have not switched to using this channel spacing in the USA yet at all, still use only 25kHz spacing. Maybe other countries are doing it but what about old airplanes with old radios that can't get 8.33 splits? If a control tower was using a frequency on a new 8.33 split, how could a pilot in an older aircraft talk to that controller? It's insane.
I don't like the HH/HT portrait form factor. I would much prefer the landscape layout with the dials and speaker to the side. I also think these are overpriced for a Chinese clone and i don't feel very confident buying from AliExpress or banggood with poor returns or no warranty from the east...
I have an Airspy RF+Discovery purchased for $NZ265, while the Raddy Malahit SDP2 would cost me $NZ750+ for a lower performance receiver. I will not be buying the Raddy Malahit

3. In CW mode, lower filter bw will also help, at least if you are able to decode morse by ears.
hi OM0ET, cool videos. I watch with pleasure. greetings from Russia from the Urals.
R8CHK 73!
There is nothing Radioddity about this radio other than than the pumped up price.
Isn't this the same as the ones currently sold on AliExpress? They look indentical but I'm not an expert.
Thanks. Would be good to see some SSB receive using the short stock antenna.
Realy good design, better then the original but for 400$ I would expect screen interference to be fixed
Also closed source firmware is a stop for me, sdrs have to be open source because if they are not u are locked to what manufacterer gives u
😍Amazing videography, never seen such a top notch quality vid in the HAM community 🤭
Thank you. How is this compared to the SDRplay radios? Thanks!
Thank you very much! I have never compared it with SDRplay.
Excellent NR function. My Yaesu FTDX 10 has the same ability. 🤓
Hi Paul, Nice review and RX on that SDR. Hope to hear you on the bands soon. SWL Australia 73'S SO
Well I can't imagine you'll hear him on this radio since it's a receive only
@@onemorething100 I cant imagine you have watched many videos here.
Terrific vid Paul. I wonder why the tuning knob would have an mark/ident mark.
Stunning noise reduction! I’d like to know why it isn’t like this on every sdr out there.
Yes, it is very good NR here :) The best one!
Hi Paul, Cor here, question: Could i connect a Skyscan Desktop 25-2000MHz Scanner Antenna with a Pre-Amplifier to it, ore would it be to much?
Excellent, pity it's so expensive otherwise I'd have one right away.
Thanks Paul for the video. 73
I wonder if a little foil shielding, grounded to that chassis, behind or near the screen would cut back some of that noise. Otherwise this looks like an amazing little radio!
Good Machine SDR!
I just saw the price. For that amount , I want something big and bulky lol. Or, I would want it to have an audio input and output that could let me use it as an inline noise reduction appliance on audio output of any transceiver.
Alot of money for something from radioidioty
If You switch on also CW (in modes) then also the CW-Decoder is working ! You had only switched USB but not switched on CW additional .
Very smart Radio. AP2ARS Club Station Operator. Jawaid.
That noise issue is a show-stopper, especially for the price. 73, Ian, VK7IAN
Which one you mean?
@@OM0ET Hi Paul, didn't you need to switch the screen off to stop the noise?
Whats the reason again 23MHZ are missing from 380MHZ - 403MHZ etc
Is it possible to use just a long wire antenna in the 50-ohm side for an antenna ?? Just a wire say thrown over a tree or strung up ...
I have an earlier version of the Malahit, and while I like the radio, the build quality was bad. The DSP2 looks much better -- have you been inside yet?
Creative video, keep it up, thank you :)
45:35 -- why is there a gap in frequency coverage (between 380MHz and 404MHz)?
Thanks for this great review.
I think the design is based on RSP1 leaked schematics, which if I remember corecly also had this gap
Until this radio will use the same receiver as rsp1, there will be this gap
Thanks - I thought that perhaps for some reason this range was "forbidden" to listen to... In my opinion, one should be able to listen to transmissions on any frequency. But then, perhaps there are regions of the world where it is not so (e.g., invasive, controlling govt.).
is there a good cheaper option available?
You would have thought you could save the modes/settings per band to make this easier?
just ordered after watching your vid very easy to follow but cant find link for your antena
As there is not much to listen anymore I'd like to know if this radio at least could be useful for bugsweeping (digitally coded signals)?
What is the charging time with a standard phone charger, and can you see when the battery is full?
I didn't fully discharged it yet, but when is fully charged, red LED turns to green.
Is this original unit from the Russian Malahit Team? Or a high quality Clone?
Damn, these things keep getting more and more expensive. I'm gonna pass on this one. There is so little to listen to, that it's just not worth it anymore.
Noob
I just got a DSP1. $280
Watching this demonstration I find very little difference between 1 & 2 models. This radio is so cool!
Hi Paul, in what frequency range the screen disturbances begin?
Can you connect this radio to a larger external screen?
still a little over priced for a chinese clone should be 300.00 that is still high .it wont decode apco 25 digital signals so it is still limited to only analog signals not good .but if you dont need it as a scanner its pretty good but they need to lower the price.thanks for this video
The radio´s scan-abilities are pretty good! I never came across such a customizable scanner. The downside is: you have to learn about it 🙂
Does it have memory bank? So you can use it as scanner.
Yes. The scan-abilities are very powerful, but need some time to learn about.
thankyou again Paul. VK2KWW
Hello, I have a Malahit-DSP2 with Firmware 2.40. How can I receive in the 23cm band. I am passionate about radio frequency beginner level. Thank you for your time. 73!
Do you think it will be possible to replace the battery when it gets old ?
nice radio.. 👍
500 euro is astep price for just an receiver, yes it's has all the bells and whistles
¿cómo diferenciamos un equipo original de una réplica?
I would love to be able to protect the screen when throwing this radio into a bag or suitcase.
Don't throw it
A bit disapointed with this receiver.
Its picking up a harmonic of Talk Sport 2 on 221.7 KHZ Long wave. I'm in Dublin.
that Noise Reduction (NR) makes that sound like talking through a waterfall, the NR in the Icom IC-7300 doesn't do that. i think Icom has the better NR. this "malahit dsp2" appears to be a good receiver but not better than the receiver in the Icom 7300. else i think this Malahit DSP2 could be one of the best handheld portable radio receivers.
What do you think are the best portable transceivers?
@@mlzs_ Icom IC-705
Looks a great receiver but I will have to give it a miss due to situation in Eastern Europe.
why is there a gap from 380 to 403 mhz ?
Due to licensing
Interesting thing that new version DSP3 hardware is much cheaper than this clone, DSP3 is around 220Eur. Just now, with all geopolitical reasons it is not ethical to buy from them.
Not a huge fan of supporting Russia or any products thereof.
That being said, Great video.
$500 USD delivered????? Someone bumped their head. A person could build one with an SBC, LCD, SDR Rx for a fraction of the price.
😂Can I receive the aviation section? There are civil aviation, military airports, and fleets nearby.
Greetings: Well I countrd my scrounged change. I doubt less than $14 will get me 1 of these. I wonder if I told them I am a semi-retired homeless vet, they would donate 1? Probably not.
Does it support the Airband 8.33kHz channel spacing?
Unfortunately not. There is no step between 6.25 and 10.00 kHz. (Source: guide to the Malahit dsp2 receiver, Andrew Barron 2024, p13)
In my firmware is 8.330 step available. On the AIR BAND in AM mod.
@@OM0ET Thanks, that's good to hear.
They should add DMR
I don't like the HH/HT portrait form factor. I would much prefer the landscape layout with the dials and speaker to the side. I also think these are overpriced for a Chinese clone and i don't feel very confident buying from AliExpress or banggood with poor returns or no warranty from the east...
После ухода с рынка PIONIER, AKAI SONY.. это всё деградация эстетически
Where can I buy the antenna?
Here, but full version only, 1m in diameter: om0et.com/ultralight-mla-mc-20.html
I have an Airspy RF+Discovery purchased for $NZ265, while the Raddy Malahit SDP2 would cost me $NZ750+ for a lower performance receiver. I will not be buying the Raddy Malahit
