I still keep my first brand new one that I bought back in 2006. It's a 2 liter HDi, 3 door XS with sunroof, onyx black top trim model I took advantage of its ease of parts interchangeability to upgrade it over the years to a full late leather interior, a RDE level 2 head unit with steering controls, a 208 steering wheel, a diesel GTi gauge cluster, cruise control, powered folding mirrors, retrofit phase one grill, wide wings, Atlantis 17" alloys, big front brakes and complete SW rear axle with disc brakes I've done full maintenance on it myself including changing the oring set for the fuel pump that gave up after 12 years of burning high sulphur diesel On the negative and aside from known suspension issues, I'd say engine mounts are rather wimpy. Minor problems I had with mine: the plastic support for the gear knob disintegrated, had to reprogram the BSi once because of a dead battery and the rear wiper motor failed
My first car was a GTI 140, even though i drove it hard it showed great reliability, i took good care of it and it never let me down. Now i daily drive a 1.6 16v XS 3-door, not as fun as the GTI but still a great little all-arounder! Love these cars.

Good video. Also worth noting the 206 has a tough, rust resistant bodyshell. You'll rarely see a badly rusted 206 (unless it's been badly repaired). Popular in countries with bad roads as the shell shrugs off potholes - albeit on lower spec models. Can confirm they are easy to repair although changing the clutch cable can result in the use of 'colourful metaphors' due to lack of space at the pedalbox. I've run a 2004 1.1i as a commuter hack for six years and it's been pretty painless to run until E10 petrol. It dropped to 42mpg so tried it on E5 for the last few months and now averaging 49mpg tank to tank but that's keeping it at 65 on motorway. The fuel savings justify the higher cost of E5...at the moment. The short 5th gear means 3400rpm at 70 so not much point going faster because it just gets noisier and more thirsty.
The rust is one of the 10 in the video! AFAIK they work fine on E10. E5 from E0 is a bigger % change than E5 to E10. Worth trying some E0. Esso's 97octane E5 is actually ethanol free in most parts of the country 😜

I've had great fun messing about in mine. I personally wish I had got a 1.6HDi instead of the 1.4HDi as it's still in the dirt cheap £30 tax bracket but with alot more potential however I never saw any of those that came up in the price range and condition I was looking for. I got mine really cheap in fairly nice condition and done quite a few small things and a few bigger tasks. Only things that I would note is that the lower balljoints can be pain to work on the suspension without the right tool but once I bought this massive suspension arm tool off eBay for £20, I could change the front spring in an afternoon, that the doors sound a bit tinny and fitting a shortshifter (very cheap on eBay) makes the gearchange so much better. Only things to go wrong was a £10 MAP sensor, a £20 crankshaft pulley and in my case a slipping clutch but I think I just got a bit unlucky as it's higher mileage and original. (Hoping won't be too hard to fit the new one) For under £1000, cheap to run and fun (not so much in my 1.4hdi, needs more power haha, remap? but handling is great!) Can't really go wrong.
In the middle of fixing mine after I was hit at a roundabout both quarters pushed in 😭, new driver's wing and rear bumper. I saved it from the scrap last year put a whole new front suspension system in, new radiator, new exhaust and petrol tank strap and a new passenger wing. Lucky I work in a bodyshop or it just wouldn't be possible.
I currently own two 306 2.0 XSi and in the last year or two, been getting more people walking up my drive and knocking on my door to ask if I wanted to sell them. It's mostly either diesel models or GTi that are available, the latter has always gone for silly money.
My 206 GTi 2003 has been the worst purchase i've ever made for a daily driver and it's not even close. Everything is slowly failing, it's rusting out completely in the back, ABS is not working, CV boot has torn, clunks everywhere, AC is bad, steering is stiff, brake booster is pushing air out of the brake master cylinder so it sounds like an air leak all the time, exhaust is rusted out and barely hanging on, bad contact in the blinkers lever, and so on. The best part is it only has 100k miles and it's in this shape.. Only good thing about the car is that it's awesome in the corners, steers very well. But also not much better than a 97 civic I had, which worked like a charm.
Sounds like for most of the last 30k, no one put any time or money into maintaining it. . . If you did that with any car from 2003, you'd have the same results... Or maybe much worse tbh! Rusting is odd though. Maybe been in salty conditions a lot

Got a battery tray.as may put it in the boot. And I may lower the rear 1, spline round..? What do you think on that? Will it upset the handerling ?? Regards steve. Keep up the good videos/work.👍👍
Sounds all great! I'd never reposition a battery unless absolutely necessary, that's my experience with cabling and batteries. I'd also never ever ever lower with the "nick" method. Do it properly or don't do it at all 😜👍 🐷Have fun
The engine/model is irrelevant really. I do mention the 180 a number of times in both videos. I'm covering the range of 206s here. But if you want to lend me yours... I'll review it
Start by jacking up that corner and inspecting and check all joints, bushes, bearings, coil spring... And, what it most likely is, the CV joint. There should minimal, or no, play in the rotation of the shaft to CV joint. (In/out play minimal is normal)
The Peugeot 206 GTI especially the 3 door hatchback are getting more sought after. I’ve seen a cheap one for sale £1630 which is around Australian $2850 dollars. I’m from Australia and these cars are popular by enthusiasts but are rare on the roads.
The Gti140 is still pretty cheap here, a tidy GTi180 will demand more money, but still pretty cheap for what you get. Great to hear from an Aussie... Don't think Peugeots are too popular in Australia??
@@PiggyPower People have european cars but Japanese cars are more popular due to people having the reliability freak outs. Plus we have to pay heaps for a new euro car
Far too small to fit my 6' 1" body inside comfortably. Also in the rear seat its impossible to sit up straight, and end up with a stiff painful neck after a few miles.
@@PiggyPower I'm tempted by the 1.4 derv because they seem to run on fresh air 🤣 not sure I could live with the power & torque figures though....even with a remap lol
What machines you using? ... And codes alone are just one part of diagnostics. Live data recording etc are key to see what's happening. Is the in tank pump running .. is there fuel .. is fuel getting to the fuel pump .. what pressure is the fuel pump at ... What's the duty cycle at the regulator etc etc etc etc etc A diagnostic is more than reading a code 👍🐷🤪
Yet I know loads of owners who have done 100k miles with a 1.4hdi without issues. I agree though, the 1.4HDi in my opinion is the worst engine in the 206s. The rest pretty much fine. I do find the 1.4hdi is the curse of the owner too, most never do proper maintenance on them.
At 14... You might struggle to get insurance 🤣 at 17, it will be expensive no matter what you have, where you live will massively effect it too. The 1.1 hatchback is one of the cheapest little cars of it's time to insure.
Not sure why you want the estate? Do you particularly like ugly cars? 🤣 I'm not aware they do a 1.1 estate. If you want to insure anything at 17, it's going to be the smallest engine you can find.
Iv just bought a cheap one ,the mileage display has just two leds no numbers how do you get the mileage up there doesn’t seem to be a bulb to replace can anyone give any advice
Depends on the condition of the car, roads, weather, engine, luggage, your driving. . . But doing 110-120 you'd probably only get as far as the first cop who would stop you and take your licence away!
@@PiggyPower wish still had my 1.9 blue k reg 205 gti sold years back b4 shot up in price, Own 106 quiksilver but fitted the gti engine, yes would do a review
It's SUPER rare for have a failed ECU on these... And replacements can be had for £150 plug N play. Exhaust systems are under £200!?! Not sure where you're getting yours. I built an entire system with stainless for £250!
So I'm guessing you paid a garage to do it.... In which case... £809 is very cheap for garage rates. Modern car blows a HG and you could be writing the car off... A car worth £1000s before the HG blew. A HG blow on a more modern vehicle would be almost impossible for a DIY mechanic... 206 ... Easy
Indeed. Not a small amount of money at all. By comparison, my bosses VWTourag needs front and rear brakes, 10yr old car, £1050 was the lowest quote he got. Just for brake discs and pads all round.
got to be totally honest... EVERY car in the world has reasons to not buy one... the 206... not too tricky. The driving position, the way it looks, they are tatty now, low spec, poor quality build.... etc. Thanks for no thumbs dowm!
@@PiggyPower the only thing I really don't like in my 206 GTI is the gear knob that is elastic and not accurate and the steering wheel that doesn't provide any feedback (compared to a mk1 focus that I have as well). Other than that I really like it especially with my Bilstein b14 coilovers and the Michelin PS3s
Need something sorting with the suspension setup then, as with the gti suspension the front end is super responsive and great for feedback! If the gearknob isnt good, try replacing the worn out linkages and bushing!
All depends on who has owned it for those 280k km and how well it was looked after. I've always found the GTi140 a bit pointless though. . . So underpowered for a 2.0gti. I'd recommend the gti180 or GTi 1.6hdi with a remap. Stg2 2.0hdi is also much quicker than the gti140

Do it properly or don't do it at all 😜👍
🐷Have fun
The 1.6 GTI HDI is probably going to be a valuable one in years to come.
The gti 180 model you should review
The engine/model is irrelevant really. I do mention the 180 a number of times in both videos. I'm covering the range of 206s here. But if you want to lend me yours... I'll review it
I've got a pug 206 and I have a clunking noise when I full lock on right hand turn...the knock is from the passenger wheel?
Start by jacking up that corner and inspecting and check all joints, bushes, bearings, coil spring... And, what it most likely is, the CV joint. There should minimal, or no, play in the rotation of the shaft to CV joint. (In/out play minimal is normal)
thanks buddy, would i need a garage to get it done or can i do it myself
@@PiggyPower
First find out what's wrong. Don't need a garage to check it if you feel confident in jacking the car up safely. 👍👍🐷
Fyi £2200 is about $3850 Australian dollars 👌
@@PiggyPower ah well the site I used said 2850 well regardless still pretty cheap
@@PiggyPower People have european cars but Japanese cars are more popular due to people having the reliability freak outs. Plus we have to pay heaps for a new euro car
@@PiggyPower I know BMW Mercedes and Audi are very popular and so is VW Golf and Renault
Which do you prefer, the 205 or 206?
205 unless I'm planning on dailying it, then a 206... 206 is much safer, but uglier.
@@PiggyPower I agree. I like the 206 but prefer the 205
I have a Peugeot partner combi 2004 20hdi it cut out and only starts now and again when hot will not start what could it be plz piggy
Plug it in and the ECU will tell you what hurts. It could be many, many, as in, any of the things. Need to do a diagnostic
Done it two diagnostics with good tools and not showing any codes also no noise when turn the key could it be the engine fuse box please piggy
No noise when turn the key?? How you mean?
Far too small to fit my 6' 1" body inside comfortably. Also in the rear seat its impossible to sit up straight, and end up with a stiff painful neck after a few miles.
Well, don't be a giant in a small girls car 😜
@@PiggyPower If she asks nicely I will sit in her car! 🤣😂😍
Nice video 😁 I've been looking for a SW 2ltr hdi for a,long while now, but they seem to be a bit of a unicorn locally 🙄 I'll keep looking though 😉
Very rare yeah. Plenty of the 1.6hdi which if looked after are just as good.
@@PiggyPower I'm tempted by the 1.4 derv because they seem to run on fresh air 🤣 not sure I could live with the power & torque figures though....even with a remap lol
@@craigwhitehousedetailing5797 yeah, not the most reliable either.
@@PiggyPower that's good to know buddy. I'll stick to the 2ltr hdi I think
Lower ball joints are hell to replace😂 did them using your videos as a guide and they are just terrible to refit
They do require considerable patience and skill for sure!
I have had two diagnostics good ones no codes could it be the engine fuse box
What machines you using? ... And codes alone are just one part of diagnostics. Live data recording etc are key to see what's happening. Is the in tank pump running .. is there fuel .. is fuel getting to the fuel pump .. what pressure is the fuel pump at ... What's the duty cycle at the regulator etc etc etc etc etc
A diagnostic is more than reading a code 👍🐷🤪
Have a 05 GTi, great revvy little fun car
Nice. 180? 140?
@@PiggyPower 140 one missed out on a 180
Ahhh dang
ive had a1,4 hdi nothing but a headache 2 fuel pumps, injectors, electrics, get 1 if you want to waste your money.
Great list there
Thankyou 👍😁🐷
Are 206s cheap to insure?
That depends on; which 206, who it is, where they are and what their driving history is like. About 1000 variables.
@@PiggyPower I was thinking a 1.4 Estate. I am 14 and kind of want one as my first car.
At 14... You might struggle to get insurance 🤣 at 17, it will be expensive no matter what you have, where you live will massively effect it too. The 1.1 hatchback is one of the cheapest little cars of it's time to insure.
@@PiggyPower So would the 1.1 estate be alright to insure?
Not sure why you want the estate? Do you particularly like ugly cars? 🤣 I'm not aware they do a 1.1 estate. If you want to insure anything at 17, it's going to be the smallest engine you can find.
206SW 1.4 diesel,18yrs old, 102K only. Still mechanically sound (bits & bobs over the years). 73mpg at truck speeds. Prob see me out (retired) 😂
Yup! Keep an eye on maintenance and should do you fine 👍🐷
How do you fold back seats all the way down???
Lift lower seat up and forward, lower upper seat down ... ?! Did I win?

Iv just bought a cheap one ,the mileage display has just two leds no numbers how do you get the mileage up there doesn’t seem to be a bulb to replace can anyone give any advice
Has two LEDs? How do you know it has 2 LEDs? There is a bulb behind them usually.
Sorry not leds it’s just two orange lights where the mileage should be I’m no good with cars I took it apart and can’t see a bulb

How far would i get with a full tank driving 110-120 on the highway
Depends on the condition of the car, roads, weather, engine, luggage, your driving. . . But doing 110-120 you'd probably only get as far as the first cop who would stop you and take your licence away!

Jeremy Clarkson : there are two types of car in the world. Either they are good oooorr they are french.
Renault gave french cars the bad reputation.
It's more roomy inside than my previous car...a C class Mercedes😀
That's quite the comparison!
parts are not cheap at all to repair an ecu £425 that's not cheap exhaust system £ 820 ( i know cause i have one )
It's SUPER rare for have a failed ECU on these... And replacements can be had for £150 plug N play. Exhaust systems are under £200!?! Not sure where you're getting yours. I built an entire system with stainless for £250!
its looks!!!
It does look
Until you have a blown cilinderhead gasket 💀
Easy to fix and cheap.
Definitely not 🤣 (£809)
So I'm guessing you paid a garage to do it.... In which case... £809 is very cheap for garage rates. Modern car blows a HG and you could be writing the car off... A car worth £1000s before the HG blew. A HG blow on a more modern vehicle would be almost impossible for a DIY mechanic... 206 ... Easy
@@PiggyPower well.. for some it’s cheap 😅
Indeed. Not a small amount of money at all. By comparison, my bosses VWTourag needs front and rear brakes, 10yr old car, £1050 was the lowest quote he got. Just for brake discs and pads all round.
And one big reason to run away, to forget about this crappy car: rear beam axle!! I own one and it's a nightmare
See the other video! 😜🐷
Although I'd say... They are a superb design that has lasted 20yrs... And takes 3hrs to replace the entire rear suspension.

Ok. Thanks!
There aren't any reasons not to buy one.
there are SO many! But I will do 10! haha
@@PiggyPower I would thumb you down, but am not that kind of a person. 😂 Vive La France
got to be totally honest...
How is gti reliability wise? the 100kw one... Found one with 280k on clock, would that be a problem?
All depends on who has owned it for those 280k km and how well it was looked after. I've always found the GTi140 a bit pointless though. . . So underpowered for a 2.0gti. I'd recommend the gti180 or GTi 1.6hdi with a remap. Stg2 2.0hdi is also much quicker than the gti140
Wat kind of car

Lol, nothing is cheap to run these days....
It's all relative. We all have to drive. Some of the 206s have the £35 a year tax and would be £300 or so a year to insure...and do 50+mpg. Tough to beat that for £1000 buy it price
@@PiggyPower hmm with that low tax that's pretty awesome. I wish it was still 25 year old cars that get no tax. Should be with all the lithium batteries killing kids in the Congo down the mines. Keep old cars on the road. Fat better for the planet.
