PVD vs CVD: How to Choose the Right Tool Coating

  • Why are cutting tools coated? In machining, what is the tool’s coating doing? Peter Zelinski of Modern Machine Shop talks about this with Julius Schoop of TechSolve, the manufacturing consulting firm. The discussion focuses on the difference between physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). PVD is a line-of-sight coating process allowing for a thinner coating, and therefore a sharper edge. CVD produces a thicker coating more effective as a thermal barrier. In this video, machining passes illustrate the difference between PVD and CVD. Choosing the wrong coating for the cut can dramatically impair the performance of the process.

The uncoated carbide is obviously running way too fast. Why not run all tools at the appropriate speed for plain carbide.
This would give a fairly realistic comparison of tool life.
Increasing the speed of the coated tools will show the difference in MRR.
I mean, you wouldn't do a comparison of HSS and carbide with both tools cutting 4140 at 200m/min.

What is plasma vapor coating? Is it a different process to both these processes described in this video?

In plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) much lower temperatures are a major advantage,
temperature-sensitive substrate materials such as plastics can be used.
More versatile process, Metallic, semi-conducting, or insulating layers can be applied.
Complex layer systems are also possible.
In conventional thermal coating, the assist gas splits into its reaction products only at the heated substrate surface.
In PECVD, this reaction already takes place in the gas phase through electrical ionization.
