Sonic Battle and the GBA Era of Pixel Sprite Animation, and the Flash Animations got me inspired in Animation. So GBA games and in particular Sonic Battle has a very very special place for me.
What is really outstanding that Emerl have his own version of special, i.e. he have animation for all attacks that he copies and they have their own spin of how he adopt it for himself. And Emerl sprite list is gigantic
Sega doesn't pretend it doesn't exist, they legally can't do anything with it since it was THQ published in the USA and they don't exist anymore. game is in limbo. (also people will be like "THEY COULD JUST MAKE A JAPANESE EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION!!!!!" yeah they could, and we'd rightfully fucking boycott them for that because that ain't cool.)

I imagine the game is in limbo, but it does beg the question of if then the animations involving Emerl, the key character from Sonic Battle, is in the same legal waters, since it seems they can use Emerl for things like the Shadow animation. Is it just exclusively the gameplay that's not allowed, since that would also affect the entire Advance Trilogy, but we also still have Gemerl and even Mecha Knuckles in the comics (And we know that Sonic Team has to then always address legalities to even get cameos, like the Ghosts from Marza Studio Animations)

I have a story about Sonic Battle. When I was a kid, I didn't realize Emerald was able to be customized, so I beat the entire game with his horrible base kit, that even includes the final battle with Eggman. It was pain, but I did it.
What a blessed day to see someone talk about Sonic Battle in this day and age. One of my favorite childhood games. And what a quality video at that. Thank you a lot for this.
I await the day GBA online gets going so this busted scene can just go places and we just have an entire Emerl tourney for people's different builds with him.
Honestly, this is why I always see Sonic Battle as a fantastic Playground Game. Balance was never a concern, the Oneshot Gauge is proof of that. But it makes for a fun party game where you don't really care about it being an even fight, you're bringing your broken Emerl to fight your friends' broken Emerls. Bring out the Link Cables.
I think this is the first time I ever thought of this game competitively in my life. That being said. I love this running trend with Cream in the games where lore-wise she's this sweet, innocent pacifist and yet in every game she's playable in, she's one of the most broken characters in the game. Glad to learn that the trend is still alive in this game.
smaller fun fact: the video touches on it but depending on what you select on spawn/respawn you automatically block a category of Special every life, the one you don't choose. This also protects you from the Ichikoro insta-KO... but certain attacks have small hits that can't be blocked in this way, but still have the insta-KO trait, like the physical "Ball" part of Sonic's Shot attacks. (Bonus fun fact, this applies to many of Emerl's terrible default specials if you happen to be playing through the story yourself, it can be a lifesaver in those early battles at the end of Sonic's story)
@@yaasos5077They had footage of Sonic Battle (specifically, a battle between Sonic and Shadow) on the Shadow Overview, when Eggman is saying about trying to get the hedgehogs to destroy eachother.
The thing is, the Ichikoro has some moves that don't properly consume a charge and let you immediately use it again. If you time Sonic's air shot just right (and even Emerl's broken version) to land on the ground before the shot knockback comes out, your hitbox deals 1 Hit KO damage and you keep the charge. What's worse, because it's a hitbox from your own body, not your shot charge, it actually cannot be blocked by counter special picking. It has to be manually blocked if you want to survive it.
I remember there was also a "right back at ya buckaroo" feature where if you block the special you set up to auto block you steal the ichikoro meter completely and yours is charged to its fullets instantaenously
The few times I see this game mentioned it's usually to talk about its unique character Emerl, or how its pseudo-3D effects were pushing the limits of what the GBA could do. This is the first time I've seen someone treat it like a competitive fighting game and find out how crazy it can get.
Fond memories of this game. My friend and i played this with the link cables and we had a blast. He couldn't beat my Emerld because i farmed the hell out of the arenas to get all his ult abilities, so we stuck to playing the minigames.
Back when my cousin lived with me, we used to play this on the computer EVERY day. At one point it just became "you get hit, you lose a stock", so we decided to switch to another fighting game lmao
Shoutout to sonic's shot special sonic wave, which is stupidly busted. If Sonic touches you while he spins before shooting the wave on a full charge, it's instant death not caring if you auto block shot since it somehow ignores it. I cheesed so many people with that tech it's hilarious
I literally was thinking to myself, "Of all the fighting games that have a 'X is broken' vid made on them, Sonic Battle should've had one by now" because maaaaannnnnn this game is BUSTED. Loved the video! Also one more: C. Gamma's 3rd attack to Upper attack infinite carried me soo hard in my playthroughs when I equipped them into Emerl.
I remember when I played this game and I was just messing around with Cream cus she's my favorite sonic character. I found out the absolute madness that is Chao Circle, grinded to get that card, and proceeded to sweep yhe rest of the game using mostly chao circle. Idk why the devs thought a spammable unblockable move that combos into itself and stalls you in the air for what seems like years, but I don’t care because that one move is what made grinding for the ultimate cards somewhat tolerable
Loved this game along with Dark Brotherhood and wished it got more love. We need another Sonic Fighters game or at least a Sonic Dynasty Warriors game. I would love that. Also if you can, make sure to use a game shark of some kind to unlock all the Gold chips for Emerl. After the first 10 or so, it becomes next to impossible to get them all, even after using the cheat codes to unlock the super combo chips.
If you play this game as a something you would play for short bursts on a GBA it becomes slightly more bearable but if you try to play it in long sessions it becomes hell, banger OST kept me going though
as broken as it is this was one of the most fun games i played as a kid. there's something to be said about unbalanced games like this, its why the bt series was also real fun
I always found Creams Air Trap and Chaos' 2nd Jab to be pretty broken, due to high speed and movement, and for the jab it has a tiny cost despite being really strong and quick. Another fun thing was Emerl's base shield, costing nothing, with the ultimate heal, as it starts the heal way faster!
Bro, hitting someone with Shadow's Aerial power move while they do an up attack is my favorite passtime. I will throw a match just to land it because it looks so cool. Slowly ascending while still hidding the opponent with each hit. Even through death. Also... I see why i never found any of those traps broken... I never used them so... lol it always gave me a free instakill.
Emerl can have E-102's style so he can explode upon defeat just like Gamma does. And even he has access to the character's moves mentioned. Emerl has really limitless potential.
Gamma explosion can be ran from and when you do know about it when defeating Emerl. It's just free ichikoro but it could be like a surprise attack since they wouldn't know.
Shoutouts to Cream having the best non Ult heal in the game. Amy heals health fast but gains no meter and Knuckles heals slow but gets lots of meter? Yeah okay buddy hold my Chao. The fact she's top 2 really doesn't help lmfao
Lots of typos, but showcases tech I never knew existed. (Basically all of it.) Anyone ever figure out why sometimes special moves just stop working? Like Sonic's Shot wouldn't produce the shockwave, or any attack with an explosion in it wouldn't explode. (Knuckle's Ground Power is kinda hilarious when that happens btw.)
I found Rouge to be the oddest character from when I played. The A.I. is pretty bad at recovering because she’ll always go into a flying state, so it’s easy to go after her. But otherwise her aerial attack can be pretty broken, since it’s a kick that boosts you up, and you can get multiple hits in a row. I think the game is still interesting, would like to see a revised version with added content, and fixing the grind.
Damn I remember maining Shadow mostly and making my Emerl a combination of Sonic, Knuckles and Shadow’s abilities I cant tell you how much bs that Shadow’s moveset is from JUST his auto combo doing about more than half your own health
Useless information: My moveset has gammas 3 attacks then shadows heavy attack which is the biggest damage attacks I have And my upper is gamma. My grand power is Sonics combo which is insta kill And that's the only important moves #autocorrectsucksass
I have lots of fun with Sonic Battle. I made my own super powerful Emerl. When I use Rouge, I use her downward spiral kick as a main attack (remember: Rouge floats most of the time). I tend to use almost all the characters (I use Chaos least), but I get tons of KOs when I use Shadow. But Shadow pales in comparison to my Emerl. In part because I equipped him with Shadow's ultimate combo. I just wish I could play all of the mini games solo, not only Knuckles's minesweeper. And about character development, Amy is very annoying, a stalking "karen". And Rouge also doesn't help.
Heck yeah it is, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Hope SEGA throws it on gba for switch online or just remakes it all pretty like (hd/2d style) or maybe just a sequel/continuation. Would be...the coolest thing.
Sonic's air shot & air power comes out frame 3. There is also DI'ing in this game. Gamma has explosion and is not blockable in the air unless you have auto block.
And here I am just hyping so bad for the fact that SEGA is indeed suddenly acknowledging it. Emerl himself has been given a spotlight, in 2024. And man this game is just very special to me. It made me want to make my own Animations and Game. I know how dum and broken it is but for a GBA Game it's just quality stuff I keep coming back for. If only there was a good fateful fangame that didn't become a real creepypasta.

@@bigkebizino8970 I'd remove the insta kill, add Metal sonic and Honey thr cat. Flat stages and platform stages to go under. Eggman and Fake emrel should be playable in an extra mode to have fun like spirits in smash ultimate.
I've played through the whole game, and it's pretty good overall. I didn't feel like anything was bad, I played along. The most annoying part was the darn constant robot fights against Gray Emerl. This game is not bad, and you simply have a skill issue. Try it out. Edit: There was also Rouge Meta Knight up-b airs and Amy thinking she can marry Sonic. Forgot to include these parts.
5:40 I'd consider a couple of changes on that list. Ult Run with Speed Up 2 is too uncontrollable. You're generally better off with Sonic's in most cases. Ult Guard takes too long, you can easily get by with Shadow's or Amy's. I'd consider Sonic, Amy or Rouge's light attacks for cost, Ult Lights are a gimmicky anyways and sad to see the 3rd counts as a blockable special. Replace the aim attack with Shadow's Takedown (absurdly powerful finisher). Air Shot is up to preference, I rather with Ult Emerl's. Same goes for Air Power, I prefer Shadow's ??? than Gamma's. Ground trap you can replace with Emerl's poor version for an unblockable Ichikoro tap. As for Air Trap, the best is Knux's. As for style, it doesn't matter too much. All it really changes is the turning speed and drift. Best result is Sonic. For a self destruct, Gamma's. I wouldn't take any mobile support, except for Trounce. It replenishes your Ichikoro slightly faster.
Bro this game was one of the games of my childhood. It was my first ever grinding experience, yet i never really mangaged to get all moves of the Legendary Gizoid version of Emerl. One thing u forgot to mention was the fact that u could continue a combo with a heavy attack after the aim attack. But that's unless your opponent does the tech on the wall. And i didn't care lol Knuckles might have been bad but I enjoyed hitting aim attacks with him on grounded opponents. Made him look strong 💪🏾
With how many GBA games get modded here and there, how come there's no rebalanced version of this game?... Sure, that'd kinda destroy what the game is known for, but the end result would still be interesting to look into.

this misses one important thing, Ultimate Upper attack, which you'd think is bad like the others, but no, it's the only attack that lets you do actual infinite insta kills for free, the attack itself is the Emerl uppercut, but it also launches an Amy's ground SHOT super ahead, which inheret the shot special property (ie if the opponent has SHOT guard, they'll block it) and insta-kill property of having a full ichikoro bar WITHOUT consuming it. and all that without using a slot in your special, so you can have SHOT, POW and TRAP all usable in one life.
In heroes it's interesting but personally I think it loses track of the "problem" it's simply +20% damage or -20% damage, this WOULD be effective if the game's damage wasn't already too volatile and skills weren't so powerful...
Also you don't need cheats to make Emerl busted. Shadow's dash is better than Drive mode and certainly his run is a good enough subsidiary for Ult Run. Air Action - you can just use Shadow's teleport or Knux's glide to zoom around Jump - Ult Jump or Shadow's jump. Or use Rouge's if ya wanna be a bastard. Air attack - Tails. That thing is as busted as Cream's, if not more. Combo - Ult1, Ult2, Shadow3, Shadow Heavy. Those are REALLY great, plus Ult3 is Garbage because it can be autoblocked by picking Shot. Thus blocking you out of your combos. Uppercut - Sonic. You will only need uppercuts for setups like Traps and Combo-Power moves. Aim Attack - Shadow. Quick, hits like a truck, looks cool. Fighting pose - either the base one or use Gamma's if ya wanna be a spiteful bastard. Or if you just like green eyes. Dash Attack - Sonic or Ult. Absolutely amazing, especially since they can COMBO INTO YOUR AIR ATTACKS. Guard - Gamma or Chaos, Heal - Cream. Ult for Guard is overkill, not like you can't spam guard. (You totally can) Specials - G Power: Shadow's or any of the Combos, or any "???" A Power: Shadow's "???" or just use Sonic, they are already great G Shot: Sonic A Shot: Ult Shot or Sonic G Trap: Tails or Knuckles, or either of "???" A Trap: Knuckles or "???", although I don't remember one in that category. If you still have points - use them for supports, especially attacl and speed ones. Looks don't matter, so don't waste your points on colors, unless you only have 5 left.
Huh. I thought you were going to say about the auto-block stopping your 1-hit-KO's and A.I. liking to use it (reasonably) to guard so you can't wipe them... Except for Emerl. Whose "Broken" (literally) 1/No-Star Abilities that are failures that have a tiny hit box at raw point blank range DON'T COUNT as a Power/Shot/Trap, they count as... A... Failure or something, but this unique identification ceases all autoblocks and the attack is rather fast. Unblockable instant kill that you can never set up to block.
@@yaasos5077 in my experience, when you play the campaign, A.I. will observe what you killed them with- or just innately know your pick, and auto block. But if you use Emerl's FIRST story specials, the damaged copies of Sonic's or something, A.I. never gets its auto block. I don't think Emerl's Specials, when they're that very first set he gets, count as a "Type" and therefore are- granted short range, but unblockable instant killers. It's how I cleared the main campaign. It's janky and I'm willing to bet it carries into Multiplayer.
NAH NAH I'M NOT LETTING YOU DO ROUGE'S AIR TRAP LIKE THAT, that shit is so easy to exploit as emerl as a combo tool with upper attacks, the ai is also stupid enough to always eat one of them when jumping over obstacles in the arenas

kinda spoilers but uhmm ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ eggman is TERRIBLY broken by the way. he only has access to missiles and bombs, but both are a nightmare and he doesn't need anything else. the bombs you can drop deal massive damage and are good to prevent literally anything to getting near you if they don't auto block (if you even can do that, I never checked), but aren't that impressive compared to missiles. you get absolutely NO cooldown for them, so they're infinitely spammable (you can even see him use them nonstop whenever you lose a stock in his battle or stray too far from him) and good luck trying to perfectly block all of it while attempting to hit him. you fear Chaos traps? we really should be glad that guy isn't playable and he isn't programmed to abuse that to the full extent
Where was the mention of the 3rd special being the one you would automatically block? (Also tbf you could just spam specials without needing to jab, especially for shot specials)

I always found Creams Air Trap and Chaos' 2nd Jab to be pretty broken, due to high speed and movement, and for the jab it has a tiny cost despite being really strong and quick. Another fun thing was Emerl's base shield, costing nothing, with the ultimate heal, as it starts the heal way faster!
Bro, hitting someone with Shadow's Aerial power move while they do an up attack is my favorite passtime. I will throw a match just to land it because it looks so cool.
Slowly ascending while still hidding the opponent with each hit. Even through death.
Also... I see why i never found any of those traps broken... I never used them so... lol it always gave me a free instakill.

Emerl can have E-102's style so he can explode upon defeat just like Gamma does. And even he has access to the character's moves mentioned. Emerl has really limitless potential.
Gamma explosion can be ran from and when you do know about it when defeating Emerl. It's just free ichikoro but it could be like a surprise attack since they wouldn't know.

Shoutouts to Cream having the best non Ult heal in the game. Amy heals health fast but gains no meter and Knuckles heals slow but gets lots of meter? Yeah okay buddy hold my Chao.

Lots of typos, but showcases tech I never knew existed. (Basically all of it.) Anyone ever figure out why sometimes special moves just stop working? Like Sonic's Shot wouldn't produce the shockwave, or any attack with an explosion in it wouldn't explode. (Knuckle's Ground Power is kinda hilarious when that happens btw.)
I found Rouge to be the oddest character from when I played. The A.I. is pretty bad at recovering because she’ll always go into a flying state, so it’s easy to go after her. But otherwise her aerial attack can be pretty broken, since it’s a kick that boosts you up, and you can get multiple hits in a row.
I think the game is still interesting, would like to see a revised version with added content, and fixing the grind.
Grammatical errors make this a 100% times better.

I have lots of fun with Sonic Battle.
I made my own super powerful Emerl.
When I use Rouge, I use her downward spiral kick as a main attack (remember: Rouge floats most of the time).
I tend to use almost all the characters (I use Chaos least), but I get tons of KOs when I use Shadow.
But Shadow pales in comparison to my Emerl. In part because I equipped him with Shadow's ultimate combo.
I just wish I could play all of the mini games solo, not only Knuckles's minesweeper.
And about character development, Amy is very annoying, a stalking "karen". And Rouge also doesn't help.
Heck yeah it is, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Hope SEGA throws it on gba for switch online or just remakes it all pretty like (hd/2d style) or maybe just a sequel/continuation. Would be...the coolest thing.

Sonic's air shot & air power comes out frame 3. There is also DI'ing in this game. Gamma has explosion and is not blockable in the air unless you have auto block.
Emerl is probably the MVC2 character.
And here I am just hyping so bad for the fact that SEGA is indeed suddenly acknowledging it.
Emerl himself has been given a spotlight, in 2024.
And man this game is just very special to me. It made me want to make my own Animations and Game. I know how dum and broken it is but for a GBA Game it's just quality stuff I keep coming back for.

@@bigkebizino8970 I'd remove the insta kill, add Metal sonic and Honey thr cat. Flat stages and platform stages to go under. Eggman and Fake emrel should be playable in an extra mode to have fun like spirits in smash ultimate.

I've played through the whole game, and it's pretty good overall. I didn't feel like anything was bad, I played along. The most annoying part was the darn constant robot fights against Gray Emerl. This game is not bad, and you simply have a skill issue. Try it out.
Edit: There was also Rouge Meta Knight up-b airs and Amy thinking she can marry Sonic. Forgot to include these parts.

5:40 I'd consider a couple of changes on that list.
Ult Run with Speed Up 2 is too uncontrollable. You're generally better off with Sonic's in most cases. Ult Guard takes too long, you can easily get by with Shadow's or Amy's. I'd consider Sonic, Amy or Rouge's light attacks for cost, Ult Lights are a gimmicky anyways and sad to see the 3rd counts as a blockable special. Replace the aim attack with Shadow's Takedown (absurdly powerful finisher). Air Shot is up to preference, I rather with Ult Emerl's. Same goes for Air Power, I prefer Shadow's ??? than Gamma's. Ground trap you can replace with Emerl's poor version for an unblockable Ichikoro tap. As for Air Trap, the best is Knux's. As for style, it doesn't matter too much. All it really changes is the turning speed and drift. Best result is Sonic. For a self destruct, Gamma's. I wouldn't take any mobile support, except for Trounce. It replenishes your Ichikoro slightly faster.

Bro this game was one of the games of my childhood. It was my first ever grinding experience, yet i never really mangaged to get all moves of the Legendary Gizoid version of Emerl. One thing u forgot to mention was the fact that u could continue a combo with a heavy attack after the aim attack. But that's unless your opponent does the tech on the wall. And i didn't care lol Knuckles might have been bad but I enjoyed hitting aim attacks with him on grounded opponents. Made him look strong 💪🏾
With how many GBA games get modded here and there, how come there's no rebalanced version of this game?... Sure, that'd kinda destroy what the game is known for, but the end result would still be interesting to look into.
There is a modded version that fixes some story stuff and other mods that balance the game.

Emerl might just be the most powerful robot in Sonic canon
this misses one important thing, Ultimate Upper attack, which you'd think is bad like the others, but no, it's the only attack that lets you do actual infinite insta kills for free, the attack itself is the Emerl uppercut, but it also launches an Amy's ground SHOT super ahead, which inheret the shot special property (ie if the opponent has SHOT guard, they'll block it) and insta-kill property of having a full ichikoro bar WITHOUT consuming it. and all that without using a slot in your special, so you can have SHOT, POW and TRAP all usable in one life.
Ultimate Emerl's 123 Jab has the same property but it can be auto blocked giving away free ichikoro. They would have to change the setup.
In heroes it's interesting but personally I think it loses track of the "problem" it's simply +20% damage or -20% damage, this WOULD be effective if the game's damage wasn't already too volatile and skills weren't so powerful...
Also you don't need cheats to make Emerl busted. Shadow's dash is better than Drive mode and certainly his run is a good enough subsidiary for Ult Run.
Air Action - you can just use Shadow's teleport or Knux's glide to zoom around
Jump - Ult Jump or Shadow's jump. Or use Rouge's if ya wanna be a bastard.
Air attack - Tails. That thing is as busted as Cream's, if not more.
Combo - Ult1, Ult2, Shadow3, Shadow Heavy. Those are REALLY great, plus Ult3 is Garbage because it can be autoblocked by picking Shot. Thus blocking you out of your combos.
Uppercut - Sonic. You will only need uppercuts for setups like Traps and Combo-Power moves.
Aim Attack - Shadow. Quick, hits like a truck, looks cool.
Fighting pose - either the base one or use Gamma's if ya wanna be a spiteful bastard. Or if you just like green eyes.
Dash Attack - Sonic or Ult. Absolutely amazing, especially since they can COMBO INTO YOUR AIR ATTACKS.
Guard - Gamma or Chaos, Heal - Cream. Ult for Guard is overkill, not like you can't spam guard. (You totally can)
Specials -
G Power: Shadow's or any of the Combos, or any "???"
A Power: Shadow's "???" or just use Sonic, they are already great
G Shot: Sonic
A Shot: Ult Shot or Sonic
G Trap: Tails or Knuckles, or either of "???"
A Trap: Knuckles or "???", although I don't remember one in that category.
If you still have points - use them for supports, especially attacl and speed ones. Looks don't matter, so don't waste your points on colors, unless you only have 5 left.

Except for Emerl. Whose "Broken" (literally) 1/No-Star Abilities that are failures that have a tiny hit box at raw point blank range DON'T COUNT as a Power/Shot/Trap, they count as... A... Failure or something, but this unique identification ceases all autoblocks and the attack is rather fast. Unblockable instant kill that you can never set up to block.

@@yaasos5077 in my experience, when you play the campaign, A.I. will observe what you killed them with- or just innately know your pick, and auto block. But if you use Emerl's FIRST story specials, the damaged copies of Sonic's or something, A.I. never gets its auto block. I don't think Emerl's Specials, when they're that very first set he gets, count as a "Type" and therefore are- granted short range, but unblockable instant killers. It's how I cleared the main campaign. It's janky and I'm willing to bet it carries into Multiplayer.
NAH NAH I'M NOT LETTING YOU DO ROUGE'S AIR TRAP LIKE THAT, that shit is so easy to exploit as emerl as a combo tool with upper attacks, the ai is also stupid enough to always eat one of them when jumping over obstacles in the arenas

eggman is TERRIBLY broken by the way. he only has access to missiles and bombs, but both are a nightmare and he doesn't need anything else.
the bombs you can drop deal massive damage and are good to prevent literally anything to getting near you if they don't auto block (if you even can do that, I never checked), but aren't that impressive compared to missiles. you get absolutely NO cooldown for them, so they're infinitely spammable (you can even see him use them nonstop whenever you lose a stock in his battle or stray too far from him) and good luck trying to perfectly block all of it while attempting to hit him. you fear Chaos traps? we really should be glad that guy isn't playable and he isn't programmed to abuse that to the full extent
