      +pine trees Do you have a violin teacher? Or had one in the past? Because if you are holding your violin incorrectly or your left hand posture is incorrect (bending the wrist) you will not likely be able to do vibrato. Your hand should be relaxed at all times.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  8 років тому +35

      +Lorienel cruz Then keep at it. Vibrato is hard and really not as easy as some people might think. Just concentrate on rolling only the fingertip as that might help and just let everything else work naturally. Dont try and make the wrist move, only roll the tip of the finger.

    • @loriedory
      @loriedory 8 років тому +5

      My private teacher stated that first to just move fingers up and down and move your whole hand up the fingerboard. Then practice in third or 4th position so your elbow won't move, just your wrist. Always start your vibrato going backward towards the scroll.

    I found the rolling from one edge of your fingernail to the other very helpful, but I was really at a loss about what to do with the thumb. After watching very carefully I was able to figure out that the placement of the thumb directly under the finger board gives the support for the rolling action. As you say, I am a work in progress. Bravo for your video!

    • @jb9652
      @jb9652 2 роки тому +2

      I recommend watching Hilary Hahn play - she does amazing things with her thumb! It was from her that I discovered quite how important the thumb is. One of the slow motion UA-cam vibrato videos has a clip of her playing (towards the end IIRC).

    I‘ve been playing the violin for 13 years now (I‘m 19) and I did fake vibrato the whole time. I just didn‘t spend time on practicing my vibrato. Every time I tried to do wrist vibrato I became frustrated and gave up.
    Now I want to join a college orchestra and I will have to do a foreplay (it’s next week...) And as I will play Sicilienne by M.T. von Paradis I want to finally learn how to vibrato correctly and play this piece the way it should.
    I watched your video today and practised the vibrato for an hour straight afterwards. I really feel like my fingers finally know what to do!! It‘s not perfect yet - but it made click and I‘m positive I‘ll nail it till next week.
    Thank you so much for this video!!!

I've been practicing vibrato now for 3 months. I am still a little low on speed but am able to do the movement. A highly recommended channel for sure.

      +cutelilly1000vedios Hav you been constantly trying vibrato throughout those 4 years? I dont mean a bit here and a bit there, constantly, each day and each time you play? If the answer is yes and you still cant do it, then perhaps its time to see a teacher, if the answer is no, then vibrato is something that MUST be practised daily and constantly, not on and off, here and there. That could be the reason its not clicked for you yet.

    Thank you! This is the only video that explains it in the correct direction the fingers are aligned in. All the other videos stress a flattening of the top joint of the finger which is, I find, impossible given that the fingers are aligned side by side on the fingerboard. Your side-to-side motion makes complete anatomical sense!

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
    @TheOnlineViolinTutor  10 років тому +93

    Whilst I sort of agree, I disagree at the same time. All students who have tried vibrato too early have very little success as its too soon and the more they shake, the less control they have at this stage over the instrument which is why one should wait. When students have been playing well over a year or two, there is no shaking.
    This is coming from 17 years of teaching and of course its MY opinion and NOT meant to be controversial or upset or disagree/argue with anyone.

    I see a lot of comments from people who have played for many years, but still can't do Vibrato. I think the best advice Alison has is, "Keep at it," That can be said of violin as a whole, I am approaching two years and I still bow unwanted strings and don't get my fingers down fast enough some times, but I am not giving up. Thanks for your sound advice, Alison.

      Miranda Clark I only tried the guitar and even I know it has a vibrato. On electric guitar you can do it in 2 ways... the tremolo or also called a whammy bar.. or pulling the strings on the neck ;) And one more thing.. vibrato on guitar is very bad for your strings if you don't do it right.

    • @TonyNL87
      @TonyNL87 9 років тому

    Just got my violin, 1st day playing violin. You're a great teacher and as I'm an accelerated learner this should take no time (with the proper dedication of course). I understand muscle memory on an intimate level (starting martial at 2 and getting my first black belt at 10 attributed to my ability to learn things and acquire empathy with anything rather easily and almost instantly). I can already tell the technique will be challenging but accomplishable none the less. The violin is already becoming an extension of my body (2 1/2 hours in) thanks to your approach on the violin. Just wanted to take a second to say thank you for taking your time to teach this wonderful ability. You are gifted. Keep up the great work!! ~Namasté Teké

    Good video. As an adult beginner, I also struggled for a long time. I started with wrist vibrato, but would get violin shake, and wrist not moving smoothly, first joints of fingers hardly moving, etc. Then progress stagnated. If you are the same, I suggest trying arm vibrato, & persevere with it for six months. Initially it feels harder, takes more energy, harder to keep your thumb in same place, & plenty of violin shake. Whats it does is forces the first joints of all fingers to move, the wrist to move slightly, the thumb to be kept in same place, & all arm/hand joints will be learning to minimise violin shake. But when you return to wrist vibrato, it will be much easier. You must be patient & stick with it, sometimes you have to attack a problem from a different angle. For some, vibrato comes alot easier, others like me, have to try a different approach. Also, as a bonus, you'll have two vibrato techniques which you can use depending on the sound you want. :)

    i'm a beginer and i think is marvellous the way you teach, The Online Piano and Violin Tutor you are helping me a lot :) but i have one question...¿How can i do the vibrato without to tense my wrist when i'm "rolling" my fingers?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  9 років тому +1

      Liliana Ibañez hmm, there isnt anything I can say that will help really as its something you have to work on yourself. All I can say is relax, dont tense and keep at it. :)

    • @ErikWilliamsviolin
      @ErikWilliamsviolin 9 років тому +1

      Liliana Ibañez If you're an absolute beginner, the muscular control in your hands may not be good enough yet to properly do vibrato.
      However, what I would recommend you try is only putting the finger itself on the violin and attempting to roll it that way. When I say "only the finger," what I mean is ONLY the tip of the finger. No thumb, no hand contact. ONLY the tip of the finger must be on the string. In this case, you'll have to do arm vibrato, which means you'll start the movement from your elbow. It's actually preferable that your wrist tenses up in arm vibrato, as otherwise you would only be pushing your wrist out, but the finger would remain still.
      Remember: in arm vibrato, your finger is the tree, and the arm is the wind that's bending it over. So your finger must stay bendable, while still retaining enough friction to roll, rather than slide.

    I've been playing guitar for 30+ years. I can play as well as a fish can swim, or a bird can fly. So I've picked up the violin and I feel like I should have started decades ago. I love this instrument! I was able to get vibrato on my second or third try. I treated it like I was hammering a trill riff, but without lifting my finger from the string. Works like a charm. I did notice that my fingertip does rock a little, but my wrist does not move. In fact, I don't think wrist movement is necessary and is probably counter productive.
