Don't get discouraged I played 5 of 6 years before my teacher even brought up vibrato.
It's my 3rd year playing and my teacher is already urging us by 2 :,)
My teacher hasn’t mentioned it for 8 years hence i finally gave up and decided to teach it to myself
Addison Winward - it’s my 4th year and we have a vibrato project now
I think a student should begin right away in learning the rudiments or the wrist/hand motions of vibrato. Don’t make it some mysterious and advanced technique for the gifted. It’s not that difficult to develop a basic vibrato which can be improved upon as time goes by.
@@Jleed989 A beginner should not attempt vibrato for at least a year as the basics need to settle in. I do not agree with teachers not teaching it until many years after they start as I agree with you, that it is something they should learn closer to the beginning, so that by the time they can play more intermediate and upwards music, the vibrato will have developed nicely.
However, attempting it before at least a year can be damaging to the basics as they must be learned and settle in first - which only time can do, as you cant accelerate time.
Perhaps the best tutorial on vibrato on the internet.
The thing is I try hard for like 2 days and then I get lazy...i annoy myself
Don't worry. You'll get it eventually.
Dya get it?
Me: **Has been playing for 2 weeks**
Her: "Wait until you have been playing for at least a year before you attempt vibrato."
Me: **picking up violin** "No, I don't think I will."
That's me right now! Thanks Alison for the great lesson!
Fr
I see I'm not the only one!
Same 🤣 I mean I focus on the basics first but allow myself sometime to try advanced things for a bit. It makes practice fun
Your not the only one but at minimum you need those basics or it's going to hold you back. I'm there along with you but if we waste our trip me doing stuff we are not ready for we are missing out on all the good practice we could be getting instead. I'm focused on doing my scales and and I'm going to put vibrato on hold till I'm more ready. In the mean time I'm going to look at what she suggested. I don't agree with the year thing tho cause it's all dependent on how much you practice. If you practice for 30 min everyday for a year and another does 2 or 3 hours or more every day obviously the other person will be ready quicker.
Today I tried vibrato seriously, and it's a bit tiring. I can't go very fast yet as it sounds inconsistent and is hard to keep up with, but I can go slower for a little longer (except that naturally I want to go faster). I did it on scales, bits of songs I know, and on single notes with the second and third fingers as I found those easier to start. It's hard for me to vibrato on the G and D strings though, but I'll get there ;) And yes I've played for a year (can't believe it -time flies!).
that was me before, but with more practice you’ll eventually get used to it! it’s like learning not to collapse your wrist lol
Undoubtedly it is the best and clearest explanation for achieving the vibrato, with the addition of seeing the most beautiful eyes of the extraordinary teacher. God bless you, José Luis, from Argentina.
Thank you so much for your tutorials! I played the violin for 6 years from elementary to high school and "cheated" on my vibrato by performing with "finger" vibrato which my teachers never corrected. I am now 26 and have since come back to the violin and am having to completely re-train my hands' muscle memory. While it is painful and mind numbing to relearn my technique, your videos are making it much simpler than it would have been!
Long story short= Practice, practice, practice the CORRECT technique and save yourself a lot of wasted time!
Thank you for your enthusiasm and instruction!
Thanks. This is my fourth year of playing (albeit inconsistently). I started at about 47. I’ve been attempting to practice vibrato on and off for the last two years but always give up. I have decided to persist and crack it this year. So far, I’ve been trying consistently for about a fortnight and I’m happy to say that it doesn’t sounds completely awful anymore. So thanks Alison. You’re right. I will keep plugging away every day. I am determined. 2020 - My year of vibrato!
hey, how are you doing with your vibrato?
My year of vibrato tanked a bit. Covid happened and life fell apart a bit, but I’m back in the game now and rewatching.
Sorry, same person. Different username.
Vibrato has always been difficult for me. I’ve been playing for 5 years now and I still can’t get it 😂
Wow thanks! I have been playing violin for 9 years now (I’m only a kid) and I’ve always done vibrato diagonally.. But now, I can do it correctly and I’m going to work very hard to improve it!
This video made me finally realise why it's called rock n roll 9:12
I am a bit intimidated but I’m obsessed with getting this right where I’m even dreaming about it lol. Thank you so much for your teachings. I love your style👏
This woman is fabulous and no nonsense. I love British accents too :) you inspired me to buy a violin again a twenty year hiatus and here I am practicing!!!
I workout every day... and when I started violin and was working on vibrato....the next morning my bicep felt like it had been annihilated. Obviously you are a great teacher. I'm just... impatient
Mine feels like that, too! Is this normal, or am I tensing up too much in my upper arm?
this really helped, I used to think I had to move my wrist forward and back for vibrato now I know its to the side which really helped me. Thank you Alison.
I've been playing the violin for 7 years, been trying to properly vibrato for about 4-5 years. To anyone thinking it's hard, it is hard. D: My problem is that I tense my whole arm when I vibrato when it's supposed to be nice and loose. My orchestra teacher, who isn't a violinist, tries to help me but it's easier to vibrato on a cello (the instrument she plays) vs a violin/viola. ^^; My private violin teacher is now helping me work up to my vibrato skills and told me to start looking through UA-cam videos and online tutorials outside of practice to get a feel for what vibrato is supposed to be. So far, the way you explain is MUCH better than my orchestra teacher! Now let's see if I can get my vibrato to not be so tense.
Very good advice, nice updated video. I'll put my two bobs worth in as it may help some people... As an adult beginner, I also struggled for a long time. I started with wrist vibrato, but would get violin shake, and wrist moving erratically, first joints of fingers hardly moving, etc. Then progress stagnated. If you are the same, I suggest trying arm vibrato, & persevere with it for six months. Initially it feels harder, takes more energy, harder to keep your thumb in same place, & plenty of violin shake. Whats it does is forces the first joints of all fingers to move, the wrist to move slightly, the thumb to be kept in same place, & all arm/hand joints will be learning to have a smooth movement. But, when you return to wrist vibrato, it will be much easier. You must be patient & stick with it, sometimes you have to attack a problem from a different angle. For some, vibrato comes alot easier, others like me, have to try a different approach. Also, as a bonus, you'll have two vibrato techniques which you can use depending on the sound you want. :) Anyway, that's my experience.
This is the way I started learning vibrato but recently I was watching others teach it with their thumb on the side and rolling the finger forward and back (rather than sided to side). I was beginning to think maybe I should relearn it. Thanks for the reassurance that I am on the right track!
You and my teacher are exactly the same and she taught me the wrist vibrato and I didn't know there's an arm vibrato Lol! I'm gonna combine your technique and hers. Your also right that you have to do vibrato constantly to able to do it and I've been doing it every time I play and I'm getting there. Thanks 🙃
was it easy learning the wrist vibrato how long did it take? I have been playing violin for almost 7/8 years i havent learned vibrato yet xD.
Finally. A useful vibrato tutorial.
Thank you! :)
11:00 Me at 14 and then shoves the violin in the closet, and then 12 years later works at it for 4 months every day and finally now is getting the hang of it. Thank you Alison, for helping me rekindle my love for the violin :)
I've been playing a month and i can make dying whale sounds +^_^+
I know you said wait a year, but in the privates of my home, where nobody hears dying whales, i try anyway...
I mean...i STARTED 2years ago...and then took a1.5 year break... so...time to start :3
And, have you progressed?
Ok, I am still gonna do vibrato even though i have not been playing for a year, I am one of the more advanced people in my school orchestra and I wanna learn vibrato so imma learn it, and I dont care if people say I cant do it cause I will.
Don't give up! You'll feel really proud once you begin to get the hang of it with the vibrato! :D
I started playing the violin 2 or 3 month s ago but kinda give up ‘cus I couldn’t do the vibrato correctly (i know the basics already) and it kinda discouraged me. This video is very informative and makes me want to play the violin again.
I learned almost all of I know from the videos you made. Thank you so much!!
Ma'am your teaching style is really amazing 😍😍. Since childhood I always wanted to learn violin. I was never confident that I will be able to learn it myself. It's all because of you ma'am I am able to learn it is a very efficient way. Thank you sooo much ❤️
I was going on a wrong way of vibrato. But after watching your video I got the right way.Thank you sooo much dear teacher 👍👍😍😍😍😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤
I’ve been playing for 5 years and it’s not that I didn’t practice vibrato but it’s that my new teacher didn’t bring it up and kept delaying when we would learn it
Thank you, Alison, for the honest, and direct advice. I have only been playing Violin, coming onto 3 months, now. I am happy to hear, I shouldn't be thinking about Vibrato, for a long while, yet. I do love the effect, when a good player uses it...it just seems well beyond me, for now. You saying it...makes me feel better about it, now...
I’ve been playing for 5-6 years and still can’t do it 😭
Me too
thanks ive been trying consistently for 2 months just to get the basic vibrato on one note. No progress for weeks though ... glad its not just me was getting quite demoralised
I’ve played violin for 3 years and I think it’s time I know how to do this
Wow looking good alison
Ive been playing for over 5 years now and i still cant ☠️☠️
I´ve mastered the vibrato after 3 months of playing the violin^^ (it was hard but I wanted it so hard :D) and now it´s easy as f**k (been playing the violin since 2 1/2 years)
euclon1 i mean i did it too
i think this might be the tutorial that actually helps me vibrato, merci beaucoup
Wonderfully done video. And I appreciate your realistic expectations. We aren't meant to get it over night, and that is encouraging. With consistent work, I believe I will get it! Thank you!
Wow , really amazing tips and guidance , thank you so so much .. please publish more ... I don't have any teacher for learning. Your videos are really helpful for me .
She is lovely teacher🤗🌹
Dear Alison, thanks so much, that's really very very very helpful. Even if it will mean I have to wait another 6 Months....very understanding, competent violin teacher
I love this channel I fixed a lot of mistakes I was making thanks ❤️
My teacher said plan on practicing vibrato every day for at least a year. One key is not to do it for very long in the beginning because your hand will tense up than you won’t be able to do it. I am now at about month six, seems to be getting easier. Started working on arm vibrato because that is what my teacher uses. I am now leaning towards wrist vibrato.
Iam learning violin through online, this one is a perfectionist on teaching.thank you⚘
Making an instruction video about vibrato is challenging, as this skill screams for personal instruction. But this video well covers the attendant issues.
Vibrato is also a very personal thing, and defines who you are and the way you "speak" in the music sense.
Vibrato is amazing! I wish everyone the best with it.
Nice one
I especially liked your guidance that with 3-6 months of continued work, vibrato could be achieved. Like others, I started amd worked a few days then stopped because of the sad whale sounds, but I am going to give it a good, sustained try again!
Thanks for knowledge miss.. Godbless you.. warm greeting from Indonesia
@12:55 can you please also show tutorial of vibrato but using the index finger at the e string first fret? i'm struggling there especially during upstroke.
I've missed your intro haven't heard it in awhile
SUBSCRIBE .....
Thank you so much , I went from being a nightmare to a bad dream lol which means there’s improvements.
🙏🏼
i’ve been playing since i was 7/8 and i’m 14 now my teacher has mentioned it only a few months ago so yeah :) xx
I can officially start vibrato in November! Thank you for this! :)
Today i learned where rock and roll originated!
Love your violin videos Alison. Your tuition has helped me improve my violin skills immensely. Thank you.
But during that first year or so of playing without vibrato, I was touching the neck with the side of the first finger, which i will have to unlearn to to avoid shaking the instrument.when using vibrato.
My teacher described it as a knocking motion, but the rolling motion makes more sense to me personally. I'll try this put and see what she thinks!
i played for 3 years. my teacher only brought up vibrator today 😭
IM TRASH AND I CAN'T DO IT!!!!😡😡😡 HELP!!!
You know this will take months and months and months right? Only practise and perseverance will work.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor OK. I will keep trying but I can't even make that wailing sound you were talking about. 😕
Again, it will take months and months and months and months. You wont even get that sound in the beginning. You need and must have patience or it will never work.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor OK. Thank you again.😀
It took me a year to get my finger muscle memory to do vibrato correctly, and continue to practice correct finger position daily. I had a violin teacher make me play with a sewing thread spool in my hand to get my fingers lifted high enough to come straight down, which helps vibrato. He had a pretty vibrato like yours Alison, so with practice, I did too!
I have literally just gotten a violin, I play several instruments, none of which would I consider myself "pro" but perhaps intermediate on all. I ha e been watching your
Videos for almost a week now. I especially love your sincerity and Honesty, and what I should expect of myself. I know violin will be by far my biggest challenge yet. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful talent, and taking my journey one slow step at a time. The biggest thing I ha e learned so far, is that this is NOT a guitar on ANY level. Haha. Wow what an instrument. The whole tuning peg verses tuning key was a huge eye opener of the challenge I just took on. The violin I chose to start with is an Aklot student violin. I did a review, which technically means nothing because I don't know what a good violin is. Would you consider reviewing this brand?
Thank-you! Brilliant.
Sana ol marunong mag vibrato!!
😂
Sana all
Oh my gosh thank you this helped make it make sense! I physically couldn't do it with how off mt thumb placement was, and this helped correct the problem. Once I've gotten used to holding it differently with my thumb underneath, I plan to come back and learn how to do vibrato! :D
Dr no words to explain....... Wanna teach violin under ur guideline
3 years strong and i think i’m ready! it would make my nyssma solo (level 3) sound a lot nicer....
You've helped me so much honestly.
Great thorough lesson ! Love the rocking... rolling... pendulum explanation! P.S. love the background lighting....simple but elegant!
Finally... Some succor in the fact I have practiced the "Queen's Wave" all these years. I just never thought it would be because of want of playing the violin, but instead that she might name me her successor. ;)
I keep moving my violin when i vibrato.ive been playing for a year plz help!!
Perhaps you need more time for the basics to settle in a little more.
this was excellent! helped me to finally get vibrato! woohoo :)
Great advice, tips and encouragement ☺️ in fact you've given me ideas how to annoy my neighbours in summer 🤣🤣🤣
thanks a lot for this💓💓💓
Hey Alison I've been watching your videos for a little more than a year now. I just want to say thankyou because you helped me choose what violin to buy and all these videos are really helpful. There are a lot of violin tutorials but I find that yours are the most helpful; that's why I subscribed. I've been playing for about a year now. Recently I haven't been practicing, it just seems kind of boring now. I don't really feel motivated to but I don't want to give up because all those lesson my parents payed for; it just seems like a waste. I'm not sure if I should keep on going or stop. I wanted to be good violin player like you I've told myself that. I was amazed because you're so fukin good. I don't know anymore though what im suppose to do. So I was wondering if you could give me some words of wisdom lol
Perhaps its what you are playing that is not motivating you - I usually find when students lose their 'mojo' its usually due to the music. Decide what music you like and want to play, then find some for your level. I have a lot of easy stuff on my Patreon page and you can also request for me to write out and arrange pieces into easy versions: www.patreon.com/theonlinepianotutor
Not only that, but there are hundreds of pieces of sheet music available there. Take a look and any questions about it, just ask.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor Thank you I'll do that and see how it goes:)
Thank you, that was helpful.
the only reason i can do vibrato is cause of this😁 cant really do it well but i will continue to work on it thanks!
I‘ve been playing for 1 1/2 weeks now and tried vibrato. Then I watched this video 👀
I tried watching other videos... I’m not leaving this channel anymore
Thank you, the up close footage is super helpful.
Hi d Ur lesson s very very clear and focusing of vibrato motion is perfect. Love Ur class and hope I ll b perfect within 3 - 6 months lol😍😍
I’m trying to practice wrist vibrato. I have been doing arm vibrato for several months since I started vibrato but I think it’s developing a sloppy habit. I know people are going to say that you should stick to whats comfortable but I think wrist vibrato will be better for me in the long run.
Your vibrato will largely be determined by how you hold the violin with the thumb. If you hold the way I do, then youll want to prob do wrist vibrato.
Thanks mam it is very helpful
Tqvm my dearest Alison for the good tutorial
Thank you once again Miss for vibrato video🎻
I have a problem with how the left thumb positions on the neck of the violin.
Basically how my left hand holds the violin is as what you’re showing on the video. But my question is whether it’s actually allowed? is there actually the correct way for the left thumb position on the neck?
Because I’ve noticed 99% of the violinist that i follow have their thumb straight or slightly bent the other way around, not to mention some tutorial shows it like that. You’re actually the only one that shows that bent left thumb position.
Thank you. It’d be great to hear your opinion on this, because i actually felt that i’ve been doing it wrong for the past weeks but can’t come up with a concrete answer. Love your videos btw! Very helpful for a beginner like me. ❤️❤️
Oh i forgot to mention that, i did actually try on using how people said the ‘proper’ left hand holds, but somehow it just doesn’t work. Like how the violin now basically always leans on the inner side of my first finger. And so when I’m trying to do a vibrato, my fingers ends up doing the tapping motion on the strings instead of rolling, thus why i do the bent thumb like what you did on the vid.
Yey I did it
Great explanation!
I'm kind of irritated because I thought for the longest time I was doing vibrato correctly and it turns out I wasn't, so thank you so much for this video!
Thank you
Most helpful video thanks !!
Thanks alot❤
Very nice
You are awesome. Greetings from Sydney
Thanks for the tips!!!
Well, I come from the guitar, been playing electric guitar half my life, and it took me 4 years to learn proper vibrato on the guitar... The principles seems to be the same... Although I've been playin the violin for solid 4 days, so what do I know. So please correct me if I'm wrong
Thank you! Very clear! Can I send you my hand for a few weeks to train it, then send it back? Just kidding! I’ve recently started working on vibrato with a few minutes each practice, and although seems like several months to get under control, it is actually very encouraging to know not to expect immediate control. Also I am an adult learner so maybe a little longer? Again, thank you!
I've been playing for 4 years now, this is my 5th and I need to start doing vibrato, I've been cheating with my finger and I can't to do that anymore.
I've been playing The violin since 4 month ago, and yeah I will not gonna think about vibrato.
Köszönjük!
Thanking you muchly :)
Will you please post the checklist that you mention in the video? Thank you!
Hi, Alison! I have a question. I have played guitar for many years and I'm just starting to learn to play the violin. Would you say that having prior experience on another (however different) stringed instrument would give me an advantage as far as speeding up the learning curve? I don't want to rush anything by any means. I understand and have a newfound respect the amount of time it takes to even get the fundamentals right. Any thoughts? Thank you so much for your instruction. :) You are my favorite UA-cam teacher. You are *THE* online piano & violin tutor!
Yes, if you play any other instrument it will help as you will know the music/theory side of things and you can then concentrate on learning how to play the instrument itself.
I have been playing the guitar for many years and can easily do vibrato on it, now learning the violin for two years (with a twenty year break inbetween) and find vibrato on the violin to be totally different - still trying to figure it out. Thanks Alison for the video.
My problem is my wrist doesn't bend like that when my LH is on the fingerboard and violin on my shoulder. Flexibility problem. Anyone else have this problem?
Hi. I'm a newb to this violin stuff. And I'm still making progress on learning how to play it nicely. Is it okay to learn vibrato now but I won't include it on my daily music practice, just for the sake of how to do it, so when the time that I'm feeling confident comes, I'll be adding vibrato to it. Sorry for my english. Have a good day!
