This show was cheesy as hell, but I grew to greatly respect Carmen Sandiego. She had so much style and panache. She enjoyed the cat and mouse game and the opportunity it gave her to continually prove her genius to the detectives who always THOUGHT they had her figured out. A 10/10 role model for future white collar criminals.
While at the same time having very strict standards that she always stuck to. It was really all about the game to her, she never wanted anyone to get hurt or made things personal. Plus, most of the time she wanted to be foiled, she wanted the detectives to prove themselves, and if there was a true threat, she would waste no time in joining with them and reminding them why she was ACME's number one detective ever.
WINGSPAN TT Also she had a thief code. Most thief’s has a code to not kill people. Something the new writers have forgot about because they have made black cat and Catwoman a killer.
It literally changed my life. I doubt I would have been as passionate about Geography and History if I didn't watch this show. I use it everyday of my life for crying out loud.
While the Where In The World game show (which was still airing when this show premiered) I preferred more because of the humor and Rockapella, this show gets my respect. It has a good mix of action and adventure, comedy, and education.
I always thought he introduction sums up Carmen's persona in the best possible way: she purposefully gives the kids hints about her next robbery, waits for them to appear, and then steals the goods at the last minute only to play a practical joke on them. Mozart's music, even in the opening credits, is educational!
The thing I love most is that they never displayed Carmen as being malicious. There’s even times in the series where she’s scared that one of the detective kids are about to get hurt. She might be a bored super-genius, playing these theft games on a world-wide (and later, time-wise) scale, but she still has a heart and doesn’t want to see anyone physically get hurt by it all.
I find it funny that this was one of my favorite shows as a kid and my best friend at the time was named Carmen. I tried finding her a couple years later with an old phone # and eventually realized I’d probably never find her lmao so Ig the question still stands, where on earth is Carmen?

Carmen Sandiego made learning geography fun. I wish they would bring it back. I don't care if it's reruns, just bring it back. Kids these days seriously need this stuff.
@@Dachimotsu Defunctland actually did a video on the show and it's unlikely that they'll bring it back. A lot of the geography contained in the live show is no longer relevant. And while these episodes contain the note at the end warning that facts were accurate at the time of recording, it doesn't mean kids will pay attention and will still list the now incorrect answers as correct. Even this animated series will have its inaccuracies. The only spin off that's likely to still be accurate to this day is the sequel to the game show, Where In Time, as that show deals with history more than geography. The only spin off that's 100% accurate is the most recent one on Netflix as that was only released a few years ago. I think that follows along more like a Choose Your Own adventure
Nah, Carmen Sandiego was on a whole other level of awesome. Imagine being the world's greatest thief, and having fun with that fact cause you know your ass can't be caught. She treats heists like they're birthday parties for her, not only that, but she got two kids always running after her, only for her to meet them at the end and go "Congrats, see y'all." and then just vanish with grace and style. At the same time it's also really wholesome to understand that she's an antagonist.. sure, but she isn't necessarily evil. At the end of the day, yes. She's a criminal, but she hasn't killed someone, or laid her hands and injured someone. She just steals, and gets to have fun with it.

I found the same as a child. But I don't think they could. If they could, they would have catched her. What they managed was barelly because she allowed them.
MsKekeChannel I wish I could thumb up your comment ten times over. I found that pretty neat when I discovered there was a cartoon to this show. ACME must train these kids very well to go up against Carmen and her henchmen. I don't agree with the movie thing however. There is a movie in the works but I don't believe it is going to happen. JLo wants to play Carmen and to do that she has to get the rights to Carmen Sandiego and I don't think the company's going to do that. Carmen Sandiego name is still their "cash cow" so to speak and they're not going to give it up easily.
Valerie Sanders Well if they keep true to Carmen's character they may make her into a character like Kaito Kid from Detective Conan. Helps you catch the bad guy just to steal the loot. Or gives up the loot so they can get away. Like Carmen saves a kidnapping victim, she'd do it because, deep down, she'll do the right thing.
They had no reason to go as hard as they did on the animation and cinematography for this opening, but I love that they did. Also, Carmen is such an amazing thief that she managed to steal an immaterial thing like a song, and do so on a meta-level on a higher plane of existence. She, a character in a show, stole a piece of classical music to be used in the real world as the theme song for said show. Amazing.
I remember at the end of the series, Ivy & Zack (the two teenagers) actually caught Carmen...but they let her go. You'll never see much of the truth on a TV screen, so get researching! Anyway, that's my nostalgic trip.
+Dan Troll I doubt it as Captain America is a super soldier which she has never faced. If its a fight Captain would wipe the floor with her and she wont outrun a topnotch shield. The red skull is vastly above carmen san diego yet he still loses so I highly doubt the super soldier doesn't stand a chance. He's defeated a historical full strength army the Nazis. She gets past humans with no gadgets or special abilties, And mixed feelings towards arresting her. All those are thrown out the window when Captain America is pursuing her.
+Dan Troll Well keep in mind that Carmen - Tech was always years ahead and better than those of whom was after her. So one would assume it would be no different with Shield. Also on more than one occasion she had saved someone or has done something heroics to make you not want to take her in.
Carmen was probably the greatest female villain ever, and the most courteous. What villain leave cryptic clues, telling you where she is, and not holding a grudge at you for finding her?

aniyah asya that's because she's the world's greatest thief and Carmen used work for them and used to be a acme detective she knows their methods and their tactics. actually Zack and Ivy did catch her twice on two episode's but she got away. in one of the episodes Zack's lucky rabbit foot got caught in Carmen's zip line as she was zip lining away. they had got lucky that time and the capture was literally luck that's all.

I enjoyed watching this as a kid. I never knew until now that the song originated from 'W. A. Mozart - Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail Ein Deutsches Krie' - 1782
For my voice acting nerds out there, this was the breakout role for Jennifer Hale (who would later play Femshep in the Mass Effect series) as Ivy, the female agent.
My name is Carmen. For years I have been plagued by this song. People saying things like, "Hey, you know what your name reminds me of?" I give them a deadpan stare and reply with, "Please n..." Before I can even finish my statement they shout ecstatically, "Carmen Sandiego!" I then proceed to leave them in there new elation. >.> The name Carmen has always plagued me, but it's a good name ;).
When I first saw this, I instantly recognized that the Chief looked so much like Egon from the Real Ghostbusters. Maybe that was what the animators were going for. Both shows were made by DiC.

You'll never see much of the truth on a TV screen, so get researching! Anyway, that's my nostalgic trip.
Drinking Kool aid i suppose🤨😂
80 people can't find Carmen Sandiego.
+Juri Tanaka hi
She never encountered captain america and shiekd both of which would smash her like a jabroni.
+Jason Case From what I remember from the show, Cap and shield would not stand a chance
Who else is watching this after seeing the theme for the new Carmen Sandiego show from Netflix.
I only came here to tell everyone about where she was.
I am yay 😀
Carmen was probably the greatest female villain ever, and the most courteous.
What villain leave cryptic clues, telling you where she is, and not holding a grudge at you for finding her?
I miss this show. The new one doesn’t hit it like this one
right?
the old one is SO DAMN GOOD I LITERALLY GO NUTS OVER IT
Netflix sucks
@Shin Shaman I can still dislike the new one 🧍🏻♀️ lol
I just want to watch a traditional hand drawn series without any changes being part of cable
It really hits different when you see the twin towers in the New York part and realize how old the show is
Chief: Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?
Where is Carmen Sandiego?
Carmen Sandiego,
Where on Earth can she be?
Tell me, Where is Carmen Sandiego?
Carmen Sandiego,
Where on Earth can she be?
Where on Earth can she be?
Sphinx, Mona Lisa, Leaning Tower of Pisa, London Zoo, Timbuktu, can you help us find a clue?
Oh, Where is Carmen Sandiego?
Carmen Sandiego?
Where on Earth can she be?
Where on Earth can she be?
I like how she always gave them clues. Yet they still never caught her 😂
She was always steps ahead of them
aniyah asya that's because she's the world's greatest thief and Carmen used work for them and used to be a acme detective she knows their methods and their tactics. actually Zack and Ivy did catch her twice on two episode's but she got away. in one of the episodes Zack's lucky rabbit foot got caught in Carmen's zip line as she was zip lining away. they had got lucky that time and the capture was literally luck that's all.
Still get chills every time I see Carmen peacing out off Lady Liberty. Class and style.
Every Saturday Morning on Fox Kids in the 90s ...I would wake up for this
Such a great song, LONG LIVE SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS!!!
That is a kick ass theme song.
It's actually a Mozart song, Singt dem Grossen Bassa Lieder, with modified lyrics. Can't go wrong with Mozart.
THEY ARE SINGING THEIR ASSES OFF!!!
Back when cartoons and music was good back in the 1990’s
Amazing that Mozart completely composed this theme 200 years before this show aired.
I will always love Qubo cartoons they are magical ❤
Imagine if there was an actual thief who could pull off thefts like Carmen Sandiego.
yeah the government
I’d respect them if there was one.
There not that smart and would be caught
Throw a bunch of autistic geniuses together with the right resources and you'll have V.I.L.E. incarnate
i kinda developed a theory that carmen sandiego was the mother of the two protagonists. granted i was 6 when i came up with the idea
I kid you not, I swear that that was plot in one of the episodes that she might be or something
when i was younger I had a massive crush on Carmen Sandiego
Why is this version not as popular? I’ve always loved it.
The old one is cringe especially the opera gospel wanna be ass theme song *I Said What I Said Sorry Not Sorry*
Dakota Panthers 😂😂😂😂😂 I’m sick so when I started laughing, I ended up in a coughing fit & had to bear on my chest. But it was worth it! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@dakotapanthers730: Ok zoomer, and seriously, can't tell the difference between a capella and gospel. Expand your range beyond AJR and Billie Eilish, oof.
@@squallofthedai eat you mom’s dirty panties and it’s just an opinion stay blessed and never pressed
I remember when I watch this as a kid my mom always asked how Zack and Ivy weren't fired because Carmen always got away constantly
I enjoyed watching this as a kid. I never knew until now that the song originated from 'W. A. Mozart - Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail Ein Deutsches Krie' - 1782
you made sound like that was came right out of the cartoon series
Carmen’s hat physics
I will not try to stop her. She's fucking awesome!!!
Shes was in San Diego the WHOLE FUCKING TIME
This will always be my favorite childhood classic cartoon show for sure and for life
The singers didn’t have to go so hard!!
Saturday mornings on Fox 11... nostaligic 🤗
And the 80s.
I never realized that carmen sandiego was such a old show.
I have only watched the Netflix version, in which she is a hero.
I used to watch this show on TV when I was younger! Childhood memories coming back.
I guess Carmen flying into the Twin Towers didnt age so well 💀
The opposite in fact.
All these years later and this show is still badass. Today's kids have no idea what they're missing out on. :/
For my voice acting nerds out there, this was the breakout role for Jennifer Hale (who would later play Femshep in the Mass Effect series) as Ivy, the female agent.
why is nobody talking about the theme song?? It's awesome! 😀
Oh Carmen, the first thing you stole was our hearts.
I have an uncommon name, so I know how it is to be plagued.
I must say, I'd love to be plagued by Carmen Sandiego =3
Oh, it seems like fun and games, but after 25 years of it, well, let's just say I'm a little more than over it.
I have actually wanted to change my name to Carmen for that reason LMAO!
Where on earth are you?
Terry I *Sobs uncontrollably*
One of my favorite cartoons featuring The World's Greatest Thief.
Used to watch this on tv as a kid. Oh the memories. Carmen was so damn elusive lol.
This show was my absolute childhood! That theme song used to get stuck inside my head for hours everytime it came on TV
ALL THE ORIGINAL 80S /90S CARTOON INTROS ARE BEYOND EPIC...
The instrumental part of Chorus Of The Janasseries by Wolfgangus Amadeus Mozart was used for the theme music.
The woman that stole everyone heart.❤
Carmen Sandiego: the worlds greatest thief or the worlds greatest geography teacher?
Both!
torquemonster290 I always got the feeling she was always trying to teach them something. That it wasn’t about the thefts.
When I first saw this, I instantly recognized that the Chief looked so much like Egon from the Real Ghostbusters. Maybe that was what the animators were going for. Both shows were made by DiC.
The landscapes/BGs in this intro are just ethereal!
was Carmen ever ever actually in San Diego?
I think her backstory in this show was that she was from San Fransisco
+Nicholas Svitak Which is weird, because in the games, she was from Moscow.
+Sephiroth7734 There's some irony for you.
@@Dachimotsu And in Argentina in the roboot series on Netflix.
A mighty blast from the past. Carmen Sandiego needs capturing, no matter where she is.
This show was fantastic and got me invested as a kid. 😁
That face when your video from 2006 is higher quality than the "high quality" version someone posted later...
+OuroborosChoked I know right.
Someone on the other video just posted that.
Between this and the game show theme, I was such a geography nerd in my Primary School days.
That one episode where they ALMOST had her- I was so stressed out😭
Still better than the Netflix series.
I just loved this show because I could couch🛋️ travel from the comfort of my own home.
I loved this when I was growing up! It was this, Jonny quest, swat cats, wacky races, Penelope peril, huckleberry hound, and one show that I can't remember the name of it it had a family that were friends with a blob thing.
THE HERCULOIDS!!!!!! I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!!
Enjoying the pleasant memories of childhood and watching this show… then seeing the Twin Towers at the end, realizing the world has never been the same since THAT fateful day… 😭
0:54 i don't like where carmen is landing considering on that direction
Goodness gracious
🤣🤣🤣
classical music, history, culture, it's really amazing how much good stuff they put into this show and still made it fun to watch.
That moment when you realize you are wayyy to young to have known this show, but it also explains exactly how/why you love retro videogames and are incredibly sad no one remembers a large show from your childhood that you have discs to all 40 episodes
Yeah
Cant relate
Who here are fans of this and the 2019's one
My twin brother and I loved this show, the PBS game show, all the games...hell, the whole franchise (especially the one on Netflix).
This was my fave out of the 3, but I do LOOOOOOVVVVEEEEE the new one on Netflix, I'm upset that i binged it in one night 😢
It's not often a cartoon's theme song spends the entire time telling you how badass the _antagonist_ is.
I would watch this show every Saturday morning. I could NEVER figure out the clues. They had some tough questions, especially the live game show. I just wanted to answer one question LOL
Funny huh? Today we are told there are no examples of awesome girls in stories, that all girls are portrayed as weak damsels in need of saving. As someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s , that always makes me laugh. Right here is a prime example of great hero and an iconic villain despite both being girls.
+Xaiver Bakuawa Seriously loved the series as a kid but the cartoon I had no idea existed until a few years ago and of course I had to have it because I finally got some background on Carmen. My sis and I used to watch the live game show and play the pc games...LOVED THEM! #throwback #
i grew up with this...nostaliga bomb...
I see the Netflix series but didn't know that was so old
I watch this every afternoon on my sister house or my dad house I miss my childhood
Carmen Sandiego was gorgeous. The scenes of her driving are sexy.
The only show to have an adapted Mozart tune as a theme song. AND IT IS AWESOME.
