Have no issue with her currently being the protagonist on the new series. She's Lupin-esque, but it fits with previous lore since in the old show she was an Acme Detective before founding Vile. Here Vile might already be established, but we're still in the early days and she's still got her strong moral code. Even if she does join Acme in this series, it's still fine with me. The show can go anywhere it wants, but I see Carmen's ultimate goal being Taking over Vile and reorganizing it to fit her beliefs about crime. Also, just because I prefer the moralistic Carmen, I object to you referring to her as evil. Just because your a villain or antagonist, doesn't mean you're evil.
Hhh I been scrolling through these comments seeing if anyone else saw the comparison to Lupin! It's a shame that not as many people seen that show because I think that the aspects missing in Carmen's Netflix series can be found in Lupin. Though both are pretty good series.
@@LitoraLee Yeah, I;ve always been a fan of characters like Lupin or even someone like Captain Cold from DC. Both are professional criminals with very strong morals. Lupin is of course closer to this Carmen becuase of the whole 'stealing from other theives' is a large part of his shtick. And while Cold isn't the type to steal from other villians, he IS the professional 'we don't kill anyone we're better then that' type. Anybody could just walk into a bank shoot it up and rob it, it takes a true craftsman and professional to get in and out with no casualities and likely never even tripping the alarm. Honestly the only thing I don't love about the Netflix series in its homaging Lupin is that Chase Devineaux is a FAR far cry from Zennigatta. While Both are obessed with catching their theives, Zennigatta isn't a complete dumbass like Chase is. He's dense, he's comic relief, but he's usually smart enough to realize that Lupin isn't always the biggest fish, and doesn't treat his comtemporaries like they're inferior.
@@CassidyShadewing That's the one thing about Lupin I'm a bit iffy on. I think Zenigata is a bit overplayed on his bumblimg cop aspect. Well there's definitely episodes that shows off his skills, there's a lot more episodes that I feel like he's only making a cameo than being a threat. Then again Lulin has like 300+ episodic episodes between 5 seasons, so it's more or less bound to happen. And while I completely agree with you that the detective in Carmen Sandiego has his ego too far up his *** to think about anything. I liked the dynamics between him n his assistant and the possible story arc he might have if a second season is in the work. Besides, a few times when his ego isn't in the way he actually seems like a decent detective.
I was born in 96, so the tail end of the Carmen craze, but I fell in love with Carmen Sandiego while playing her games (with the learning company). I just watched the Netflix Series and I really like her backstory, even though the ending was a complete plot twist.
Huge fan of Carmen Sandiego. "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego" made my weekday afternoons while "Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego" began my Saturday mornings.
My favorite moment was finding out in the TV show that she and I share a birthday, being March 1st. I was both excited and frustrated to learn that the Greatest Thief with the best clapbacks and I were born on the same day.
I loved that the V.I.L.E headquarters were located in the *Canary Islands.* Either they did a reference to a 9th ghost island or the HQs are located somewhere within the archipelago.
Sí. Soy puertorriqueño nunca he ido al archipiélago canario pero desde que aprendí sobre los lazos isleños con mi patria las llevo en mi pensamiento. Yes. I'm Puerto Rican I have never visited the Canarian archipelago but ever since I found the islander ties with my homeland I have them in my thoughts.
What??? In san borondon? No sé porqué estoy hablando en inglés jajaja, sinceramente no conocía absolutamente nada de esta carmen san diego, es algo americano verdad?
I remember the first time I ever saw Carmen Sandiego was when the "Where on Earth" series was on QUBO. I remember staying up late at night just to watch that show. It brings back so many memories.
I did play the games and love them! My favorite was where in America is Carmen Sandiego. I also have great memories of watching the game show every afternoon with my Sister.
It should be noted that The Learning Company is no longer an independent company and went through several other corporate hands, including Mattel Toys for a little while, and is now part of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the trade and textbook publisher (and the ones who worked with Netflix to make the new series happen).
I loved the Netflix series very similar to Kim possible which was a childhood favourite. Netflix was my first of hearing about her, but interesting learning more. Once when I was watching it my mum recognised the name when they said it in nexflix's opening.
I grew up watching Carmen Sandiego and playing the games (at school). In the games, I thought she was mysterious and cool. The Fox tv show Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? was such a fun ride! I loved how they disguised education with adventure. But I must say, I love the latest reincarnation from Netflix best. It's a more fleshed out version of Carmen Sandiego. The 90's version will always be special to me, but I'm so glad they found a way to revive and freshen up the franchise for a new generation to enjoy :)
I know this is old, but I swear!! The 1994 TV series changed my life like literally. It got me super invested with Geography and History that to this day, I am still a huge nerd when it comes to those topics. Seriously, I'm the worst in trivia pursuit with those questions. I just found so much interest with the world, and just had a passion for exploring it as a child. This show really means a lot to me. I never played the games since my family was super poor at the time, but I'll never forget those moments where I sat on the floor on Saturday morning watching Zack and Ivy in action. I recorded them all on VHS and watched them over and over again for years. 'Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?? Carmen Sandiego?? Where on Earth could she be?? Where on Earth could she be???'
I grew up as a kid playing Carmen Sandiego in the 90’s, the game shows, cartoons to now finishing the 4th season of Netflix’s series. I loved it! Having her backstory, although retconned, fleshed out was like coming full circle ⭕️ with my love for this iconic character.
I grow up with the computer games and TV shows of Carmen, so I am a big fan, I love the Netflix version of this beloved character I hope she stays with us for a long time.
Watched it on Netflix because I was born in the early 2000’s. I still liked watching “where in the world is Carmen Sandiego” on qubo and thought she was a QUEEN!
the second game show was what I remembered from my childhood. I always looked forward to watching it after coming home from school. I now know the reason why there weren't anymore episodes one day...
I think that effectively that the new Netflix show is writing its own version a story has existed for decades. After all, it had quite a few call backs to the game show and computers i.e. Chase, Jules Argent, Chief, Zach, Ivy, the Sensei, Sara Bellum and quite a few VILE agents, and there were a few Easter eggs as well. I think what we will see is a modern twist on a classic where new fans and old fans can get behind it. In the computer games and game show, it was a clear right and wrong. Carmen was bad, and we, as the good guys, had to stop her. The television show became a bit more complex in a way showing us hints about Carmen's life and her moral code. Carmen was always in the gray area when it came to thefts especially on the tv show. She stole because she enjoyed the challenge of it. The one time the player challenged her to steal something without using technology and Carmen did just because it was an extra challenge. The only time she stole something with a purpose is when she was reunited things from her childhood that was about to be destroyed. Zach and Ivy never mentioned working with Carmen. In fact, they are teenagers to young adults when Carmen is active on Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego. Chase and Jules were actually her old partners in the computer game Carmen Sandiego Word Detective and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, respectively. My first memory of playing Carmen Sandiego is Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective.
I remember watching the the 1994 cartoon almost ever Saturday afternoon and it was amazing if I could ever find the show online I want to show it to my kids.
I watched all the Carmen Sandiego cartoon and educational shows when I was a kid. Brings back good memories from the 90’s and I am happy that it’s back!!
The show premièred on my 13th birthday in 1991. As for my "favorite part", let's just say that hearing the bass singer in the original Rockapella flipped a switch in me that day and I realized something fundamental about myself.
Where in the World was classic, introduced me to geography. Where on Earth(cartoon) was a dope follow up, it actually was a well blend sci-fi and history.
I grew up always trying to watch the Cartoon in the 90's. I could never pin down the time when the show was though...but I watched it enough that I love it.
The only reason I ever saw the 90's cartoon was because I had basic tv and it was on qubo late at night. Honestly the only reason I had ever watched or seen she-ra or he-man or any other show from the 80's to late 90's or early 2000 is cuz it was on qubo. I miss it at times
Yeah I remember that I got introduced to this through the computer games and the live tv show. My mom got us the the history and math Carmen Sandiago games.
The treasures of knowledge game introduced me to Carmen Sandiego and then I delved into other Carmen related matters and I was immediately hooked. The games, tv shows, etc. shows how diverse the world actually is
I understand that Carmen has never been a real hero 🦸♀️ before, but there’s a first time for everything and I hope 🤞 that Carmen can still do her job in educating and inspiring people, while experiencing life on the other side of the law.
Aww man. I love the Carmen Sandiego games. I played Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego so often I still could play that game from memory. They were educational games that were fun and the series really means a lot to me
I want the Netflix series to be continued, maybe as an animated movie. I know about the live-action movie, but it’s not the same. I love the animated Netflix shows
I loved Where in the World is Carmen San Diego! I was the proud winner of a shirt for many years. (Where in the World had a mail in contest. You had to collect answers from a weeks worth of episodes and mail them in on post cards).
I was a bit too young to remember the TV show (although I did know about it). I grew up with the 90s computer games. They were fun, but the worst thing about them is when you put all the pieces together, find the thief, try to arrest them, but you lose the case because you forgot to click "Issue" on your warrant! If you've played the games, you know how defeating and frustrating that is! Everything else goes right, but without a warrant your arrest is unauthorized, and the thief goes free!
I've never heard of Carmen Sandiego till Netflix but the fact that they tell the audience facts was a thing that I thought was extra makes more sense now
I was a Rockapella fan way before the show started. I had drew a comic about rockapella and sent it to the show. They liked it so much that the Carmen SanDiego show wrote me a thank you letter back. There was plans on inviting my whole class to one of the shows but that never came through. I still have that letter.
I was really young when "Where in the World" aired, but I was exactly the right age to totally eat up "Where in Time". Even though it was only on for a couple of years, I have such fond memories of that show. It's amazing how much production went into a children's game show--the live action intro where Carmen summons the villains each time, the really cool set design with tons of neat lighting and smoke effects, all the cool graphics that were WAY ahead of their time, and that pulse pounding bonus round where they had to make their way through each of the time gates. I think it deserved to be a just a little more than a footnote in this video :P But overall, really cool recap!!
I watched the PBS game show as a child! Now, Kids These Days(TM) can enjoy her as well! I am curious about it, considering how times have changed over the past few decades.
Carmen Sandiego was a good part of my youth. I played two different computer games, and watched both the game show with Lynn Thigpen and Rockapella as well as the animated series. I'm sure there are many facts I learned over the years and that I may remember if a related topic happens to occur in my life, but the one I will always remember is that the Spruce Goose, the largest flying boat and built by Howard Hughes, was shipped to an Oregon museum for display.
If they want to keep the new audience (like me) keep her good. If you want to go back to her roots, have her defect and become bad (like maybe ACME does something to her friends, or they put her on a wanted list and she's officially being labeled as a criminal and that puts her on edge until she finally gets caught while trying to capture the real villain. so then she goes bad because of ACME treating her like trash) but then realizes (once again) that being bad is really bad for everybody and she becomes good again even if the world sees her as a criminal
I used to play this game in the late 80s and early 90s. Haha sound old now I know.. Anyway Geography was always my favorite subject in school. I still love geography though haha
I was first introduced to Carmen through the old animation series. Can't remember much of it now but I though it was cool. The Netflix reboot was very engaging. I'm waiting for the next season.
From what I can tell there’s a half-hearted theory that V.I.L.E bookkeeper Cookie Booker in the Netflix series is the Carmen Sandiego from the 90s series. (That lady who the new Carmen steals the coat and fedora from. Cookie Booker shares the same voice actress as 90s Carmen.) Kind of a passing of the torch, if you will.
I love this new Carmen. First off it's nice she's portrayed as a very young adult, Zak and Ivy are her friends and partners, and she's good. I'd hate to imagine the series ending with her becoming a thief like in her previous incarnations, especially after all they've been through. She's better off as a Robin Hood esque thief. Steal from Baddies and help the Good.
Are you kidding me? The red hood Carmen Sandiego is amazing!!! Loved trying to catch the first animation on the tv late at night, and this new story is pretty neat!!!
Aside from the game show, the main thing I remember about Carmen is that me and my sister had one of the games that came in a cereal box. We played it a bit, but our dad's friend (a technology teacher for lower grades) asked to borrow it from us. My sister bugged him for years to give it back, long after we would have played it (it was more the principle of the matter at that point). He had lost it (funny enough, where in the School is Carmen Sandiego?), so he went to Ebay and bought a used copy and gave it to her as a wedding gift a couple years ago. ~15 years after he borrowed it in the first place.
I'd like to see a Carmen Sandiego VR game. Maybe follow the same detective structure as the original computer games, but instead of just getting the clues for the next destination, put in some hidden object elements. For example, maybe when you search a former hideout of the crook you're trying to find, you have to find a scrap of the flag of the next country they're going to. Or maybe pieces of the flag of their final destination. Another option might be to put elements from games like LA Noire so that when you're interrogating a witness, you have to notice when they're nervous. That plus finding a hidden VILE logo will indicate that you're talking to a henchman. In that case, the player would want to be more aggressive vs interviewing an innocent bystander who is afraid of being hunted down by VILE.
I was so confused a while ago when my niece was talking about seeing Carmen San Diego, that show where ahe goes around protecting monuments from Vile. Then she got so confused when I tried explaining Carmen was supposed to be the bad guy
I was a big fan of the computer games in the Nineties, and I loved both game shows. “Where on Earth” introduced me to Jennifer Hale’s quality voice work as well as keeping me interested in geography, and I’m excited as hell to rewatch the new Netflix Carmen.
Versha, that was an outstanding, thoughtful and engaging retrospective! I have long been a fan of Rockapella but never really knew the depths of the Carmen franchise. Thanks so much for so smartly sharing the history! :-)
I never knew anything about the 90’s Carmen San Diego I just started to know her since the 2019 release there is still so much I don’t know about her past and I’m still exploring it because Carmen San Diego (2019) is my favorite series of all time
Personally i never got to know Carmen at all until the netflix series. This video definitely gave me some context i needed to know! Now i see why the show had that weird transition from storytelling to educational. Honestly love Carmens look, she is beautiful and badass in every adaptation. But i would personally appreciate a film or show around her story. Education is valuable and learning about culture is all well and good. But i really want a kickass in-depth story, to match the kickass look. But the netflix show as it is isn't hurting anybody. Its just in a demographic that i don't fit in well.
Carmen should always stay gentle and noble. I've been watching the original cartoon right here on UA-cam, and noticed several things: Always attempts to rescue the detective in peril (usually Ivy); has a strict moral code, spelled out a bit in the two part 2nd season finale (Boyhood's End); Is sentimental (Deja Vu); and, as Zack said in the 2nd season finale: Has class. Makes you really wonder if all her crimes aren't just a game to her... She's never upset she didn't keep anything.
Math Detective was my first brush with the games. Holy hell... All of the "escape" sequences were terrifying to me as a kid. The locales and ambiances were eerie and foreboding and made me feel like a real super spy on a dangerous mission. Good memories.

d1chosen973 you’ll like The Netflix series better than that 90s thing
I think I’ve seen that show one time in 2013-14. I didn’t watch the whole thing. I should’ve because I don’t know when the next time I’ll see it
Have no issue with her currently being the protagonist on the new series.
Carmen Sandiego was in my math books in 4th grade
Carmen Sandiego was suppose to teach Geography not Math. There's no reason she should be in your math book.
Oh my god- where can I get this book-
@@drag.ul.a No where cause they are lying.
@@numerical25 Actually, there was a Carmen Sandiago math video game released in 1998 called "Carmen Sandiago Math Detective".

Coincidentally, believe her show is the reason why I love to travel now, Lynne Thigpen RIP
Lynne Thigpen was Lipps in The Warriors.
I loved that the V.I.L.E headquarters were located in the *Canary Islands.* Either they did a reference to a 9th ghost island or the HQs are located somewhere within the archipelago.

Yes I guess so :)

I'm a 2004 child, I remember watching some episodes from 1994 series when I was little. I loved it
I loved the Netflix series very similar to Kim possible which was a childhood favourite.
'Where on Earth is
Carmen Sandiego??
Carmen Sandiego??
Where on Earth could she be??
Where on Earth could she be???'
That's actually just a classical Mozart composition with Carmen-centric vocal lyrics super-imposed over it.
Netflix's Carmen's never turning evil. that is a ridiculous propagation
Dead Meme I wanna know more about the original now that I’ve watched season 1 of the Netflix show.
I know!
You were wrong for *spoilers* 1 episode in season 4!
Watched it on Netflix because I was born in the early 2000’s. I still liked watching “where in the world is Carmen Sandiego” on qubo and thought she was a QUEEN!
*WHO KNEW ABOUT CARMEN CUZ OF QUBO?!*
Death Score I did I don't rlly like the new version cause I grew up with the old version

the second game show was what I remembered from my childhood. I always looked forward to watching it after coming home from school. I now know the reason why there weren't anymore episodes one day...
I marathoned all the four season of 2019 version in just a single day
Season 1 - *Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego*
Season 2 - *When in the world is Carmen Sandiego*
Season 3 - *Why in the world is Carmen Sandiego*
I missed the show and the game im mad that they changed her mysterious look .
Here's a whole playlist for you and your kids! ua-cam.com/video/HKNwBwPx53g/v-deo.html&start_radio=1&list=RDQMDZuGZmTsP1Y
I watched all the Carmen Sandiego cartoon and educational shows when I was a kid. Brings back good memories from the 90’s and I am happy that it’s back!!
The show premièred on my 13th birthday in 1991. As for my "favorite part", let's just say that hearing the bass singer in the original Rockapella flipped a switch in me that day and I realized something fundamental about myself.
i started playing with the Where in Time is Carmen San Diego remake and am so excited that there is a new tv show!
My history teacher showed us the 80's game show and now when I watch the new Netflix original, I get flashbacks.
Amazing that they actually implemented this in the final season
Where in the World was classic, introduced me to geography.

She did embraced evil but that's just because she was brainwashed.
I enjoyed playing the game “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego” years ago. It’s no wonder I am following the Netflix series. 😊
I really started to love this animated series
The games, tv shows, etc. shows how diverse the world actually is
The Chief!!! OMG, that brings back so many memories!
I like her as a hero to be honest. Really loving the new Netflix show.
The Game show.
Loved the Toon.
Miss Lynn Thigpen. Even watched last series she was a part of.
I love the animated Netflix shows
My childhood crush😪 the pain cuts like a knife
I loved Where in the World is Carmen San Diego! I was the proud winner of a shirt for many years. (Where in the World had a mail in contest. You had to collect answers from a weeks worth of episodes and mail them in on post cards).
I grew up playing Where in the World and USA is Carmen Sandiego! It got me into loving History and Geography!
My dad used to be a big fan of Carmen Sandiego and he was the one who told me that I should check out the Netflix reboot. I love it!
Literally no ones talking about Finn Wolfhard.
I've never heard of Carmen Sandiego till Netflix but the fact that they tell the audience facts was a thing that I thought was extra makes more sense now
Played multiple "Carmen" games, and enjoyed the TV show, so much fun (and educational)
Thank you for the like
I was a Rockapella fan way before the show started.
I used to love watching the game show after school, and now, I'm finding vids here on UA-cam and showing them to my kids.
I watched the PBS game show as a child!
Now, Kids These Days(TM) can enjoy her as well!
I am curious about it, considering how times have changed over the past few decades.
I never knew Carmen Sandiego until Netflix. I like learning the origins of shows like these.
80s kid 👧🏽 Here! I got into the WITWICS PBS game show in 92. ♥️ I played the PC game when it was available to my middle school in 93.
Thank you, Versha and NowThis Nerd, for a great review of the Carmen saga.
I love the Netflix cannon of Carmen San Diego now that its on season two, i really like the new direction they took.
Honestly, did not expect you to say that Carmen being a hero was a mistake and that she should a true villain like she always was.
Then she got so confused when I tried explaining Carmen was supposed to be the bad guy
the new cartoon show is EPIC!! i have very fond memories as a child playing the deluxe game and watching the show!!!
I was a big fan of the computer games in the Nineties, and I loved both game shows. “Where on Earth” introduced me to Jennifer Hale’s quality voice work as well as keeping me interested in geography, and I’m excited as hell to rewatch the new Netflix Carmen.
While the games weren’t a staple of my childhood, I did enjoy playing one of them and I really like watching the Netflix show with my baby sister now
Versha, that was an outstanding, thoughtful and engaging retrospective! I have long been a fan of Rockapella but never really knew the depths of the Carmen franchise. Thanks so much for so smartly sharing the history! :-)
I never knew anything about the 90’s Carmen San Diego I just started to know her since the 2019 release there is still so much I don’t know about her past and I’m still exploring it because Carmen San Diego (2019) is my favorite series of all time
I played the original game as a kid! MY ALL TIME FAVORITE!!

Is anyone going to talk about what happened to the live action?? It’s been 3 years...
