    Installing a winch to your Jeep JKU is a necessary upgrade for any off roader or explorer. It could literally save the day if you find yourself stuck. You can become self independent and recovery becomes immediate, but which winch is right for you. There are many questions you need to ask yourself about your needs and the needs of your rig.
    For me, my Jeep has the Freedom edition package meaning it has a gunmetal color grill, bumper and wheels and I like this look. So when it came to installing a winch, I wasn't ready to swap out my stock bumper for an aftermarket steel bumper. I wanted an option to install a winch over my OEM bumper.
    The Rock Hard winch mount plate was the perfect option. It mounted onto the frame of the Jeep seamlessly and without any cutting or fabrication. It was a simple bolt on solution that could be installed in 45 min by even the most novice Jeeper. I added the Badlands 12k winch by Harbor Freight and now I am ready to hit the trail.
    Thank you to Atlanta Ceramic Coating and PPF (Evan and O) for the Badlands winch. It’s perfect.

    I installed the same rock hard winch plate 8yrs ago and couldn’t be happier.

      It was GREAT when I had it. Worked flawlessly.
      Last year, a company called GoRhino sponsored Road Rash and wanted me to test out their new steal bumper (which i think is 1000% the best bumper ever made).
      Otherwise I would still be running the Rock Hard plate. My only issue was the lack of other recovery points from the front.

    Nice install.
    Used a plate as opposed to a bumper on my old 4runner for a winch as well.
    Had to cut the bumper a...bit ;).
    I haven't yet used it to self recover, but the 3 or 4 trucks I yanked out were throwing dinner and drink invitations all over.
    Excellent addition.
    Cya' out there!!

    These Badlands winches are getting more and more recognition for sure lately. Never would have thought about this winch but trying to justify a $2400 warn winch is tough when in reality the badlands if something goes wrong, I could buy 4 for the price of 1 warn winch

    • @RoadRashOffRoad
      @RoadRashOffRoad  2 роки тому

      You are right. I am sure Warn is worth that in the long term and from a customer service warranty prospective but I cannot afford some of the really high quality ones.
      Also, I have heard mixed reviews from them. Many swear by them with no problems and some have had issues.
      But for the low cost (and the fact I don’t use it often - I’m more of a overlander, not a rock crawler), I thought I’d give it a shot and if it goes out, replace it.

    Good video. What about if you need to take your grille off to change headlights, etc?

      Thank you Skyfall (I’m a huge JB fan - my 1973 MG’s name is MoneyPenny)
      If / when the headlights need to be replaced, I will have to remove the winch. Fortunately, these are recently installed new LED headlights so I believe I will be good for 3-4 years or so.

    What is the purpose of the pins on the plate at the hooks? It appears in your video as the pins are blocking the hooks from being used????

    • @RoadRashOffRoad
      @RoadRashOffRoad  2 роки тому

      Since the plate is only mounted onto the bumper / frame at one point, the tow hooks actually act as the second mounting point, adding strength / support to the plate, holding the weight of the Jeep under winching.

    That's the Vacuum pump, not the water pump.

      Ooops. My mistake. I’m not much of a mechanic. I only work on DIY in my garage and if I haven’t worked on it before, I get terminology wrong. Thank you for letting me know.
      Now if I have an issue with my Vacuum pump, I know where to look.

      Hey Nick... This is the Rock Hard winch plate I used for my Jeep JK, however I did not by it from Amazon. I found one on Facebook Marketplace for about $60. I would look there first.

    • @RoadRashOffRoad
      @RoadRashOffRoad  2 роки тому +1

      Yes you can. That’s actually what the “winch plate” is made for.
      The bumper I have is a stock bumper. I wanted to keep my stock bumper so I decided to go this route.

      @@bradleyhightower6849 Yea,., My Jeep is the Freedom Edition which has the Grey bumper that match the Grey wheels. I actually like that look.
      The winch plate installs directly to the bumper rails (from the body of the Jeep) allowing you to keep your stock bumper. It was super easy to install and should only took about 45 min or so with simple garage tools.
      Good luck.

    Winch still holding up good?

    • @RoadRashOffRoad
      @RoadRashOffRoad  Місяць тому

      Absolutely. I’ve used this Badlands 12k about 60 times, both winching myself and others out. Never failed, never binded, great winch.
      Unfortunately, i still have the steel cable on it. I have a great synthetic line in my garage ready to swap out. I just need to find the time to do it since I will be shooting a video on that.
      I am not using the stock bumper and winch plate anymore. I got a new steel stubby bumper by GoRhino so when i installed that, I just moved the Badlands winch over to the new bumper

    I am surprised it is only held by 2 nuts ?? Does it hold well ??

    • @RoadRashOffRoad
      @RoadRashOffRoad  8 місяців тому

      It held up perfect, and I used it a lot. Even though it was only bolted onto the frame with 2 bolts, the top of the winch plate was strategically wedged and anchored under the factory recovery hooks, which adds the additional secured placement.

    • @jasonh4167
      @jasonh4167 4 місяці тому

      I have the same one. The winch plate uses the hooks as support, the hooks are attached to frame by 8 3/4” bolts, it’s strong enough to suspend my jk in the air by the winch. I’ve also double line pulled a 1ton Dodge Ram king a out of a bog but had to tie my jeep to a tree at the back..
