I agree somewhat. His ability to throw on the run is already in the elite category. Being able to hit your receiver in stride is literally game changing in the NFL and the Vikings have *great* receivers. But his special skill is yet to be known. I really think after we have some nfl tape on JJ that he’s going to be incredible.

J.J. DOES have standout skill(s). He's very accurate (under pressure) and makes excellent decisions (also under pressure). He doesn't throw as well as Burrow at present, or even Caleb, in terms of ease and velocity on all throws. But he can make all the throws.
He'll get a little stronger the way Brady did. He warrants being drafted high. His first year will be ok. His 2nd will be much better. Eventually I think he'll be a top 5 NFL QB at some point.

I really don't see the "athletic limitations" in conjunction with his sacks or W/e Josh was talkin about. JJ has a WAY better Pressure/Sack rate than Caleb, Drake and Jayden(by a mile) and even better than Kyler, Lawrence, Hurts, Herbert, and Young.
The kid can play the pro-style offense, with-in structure, and avoid sacks better than the top 3 guys you'd consider "better playmakers" than him, and he's a better playmaker than the year 6 polished guys that can play a bit better in structure like Penix/Nix

I have heard that Tom Brady was working with 2 Quarterbacks in college from one of my friends who follows Tom. 1 was Shedeur Sanders out of Colorado,,,,the other was the Quarterback from his alma mater JJ McCarthy. It really shows too the way that both tend to process the game. McCarthy plays a little faster than Brady IMHO which may work against him actually as Brady's methodical ball control really helped New England maintain it's defense superiority. However, if McCarthy can utilize the run as effective as Brady and learn to control the tempo similarly, you are looking at a pair of Brady
Proteges that could further Brady's legacy in the NFL.
I do have to laugh at the people that over analyze what is completely oblivious on film. The same mudder fuggers claiming these " Red flags" for McCarthy also claim that Caleb Williams is the best QB in the draft! I am not impressed with Maye or Williams and like Daniels , Nix and McCarthy better than either of those 2. Caleb Williams fans are Bryce Young fans and Drake Maye fans are Carson Wenz fans. Not horrible QBs , but I wouldn't waste a #1 pick on any QB really if I had that many wholes. Caleb Williams is a project QB and Maye just looks like a backup for a few years. Chicago should have just run with Justin Fields and Traded back and tried to land Marvin Harrison Jr, or Malik Nabers and Joe Alt. They could have rebuilt that whole Oline this draft , added a run game , and turned that team around. Now they will rebuild around a similar Quarterback with even less experience.
I kinda want to see McCarthy end up with the Patriots. I think I would like that.

Most people who talk QBs don’t appreciate the nuances of the position the importance of making the right decisions .making the right reads . Besides in the case of big time throws sometimes especially in a close game you only need to make one big time throws to change a game . Besides most people who judge big time throws usually a very arbitrary definition . For example maybe a big time is situational based such as it is a minute left and you need to get the first down to seal the game and you hit the wide receiver on a post curl for 10-15 yards to seal the game that’s a big time throw . But that same play in the second Quarter isn’t a big time throw . Or it’s A td pass to the back corner of the end zone over the shoulder . 3rd goal from the 11

Drake Maye reminds me of a more mobile Sam Darnold, maybe a blend of Darnold and Daniel Jones, and Jayden is RG3, if RG3 needed a 5th year and a transfer to break out. JJ is the only one of the top QBs that reminded me of an elite NFL QB, and my even crazier comp, is Aaron Rodgers, except JJ is better at avoiding Sacks than Rodgers or Burrow and he's Way younger than either coming out.

@@JJ-zr6fu Wrong! That game showed what he is about. He brought them back from 19 points down. That's a warrior. He didn't go sulk in the corner. He shook that shit off and balled out. You do know that the new QB coach (kirk Campbell) developed his mechanics on the pick six throws and J threw that same pass all year without an int. The plan at Michigan was to win the natty not showcase J.J. Having a dynamic QB who could make plays was all Har needed with the team Michigan had. And that's what happened. It was a masterclass in winning. Here's the recipe: Run the ball to eat clock, keep your defense fresh, wear down the opposing defense, keep the opposing offense off the field, and reduce the risk of injuring your dynamic QB and the starters, which was a concern during the year because they couldn't win it without J.J. They needed him healthy for the big games. He wound up getting injured anyway but toughed it out from PSU to Bama. The run game was so, so due to teams stacking 8 in the box much of the season. That's where your dynamic QB comes in and moves the chains on third and long. Which he did all year (10 yards per comp). You got fooled by the big runs in the big games which was due to the jumbo packages used to free up the backs. Michigan was saving that shit for PSU, OSU, etc. They had it all planned out back in the summer. Brillian! Blake Corum's first of only three 100-yard games was at Penn State, which was game 10. Donovan Edwards only had one (Washington). Being conservative is the Michigan way. Use to drive me crazy, especially when they needed to open it up. Lloyd Carr didn't turn Brady lose until the Orange Bowl against Bama. Brady's last game. Great game by the way. He didn't turn Chad Henne loose until his last game coaching against Urban Meyer and Florida. Great game by the way. J.J. had more pass attempts at Michigan than Harbaugh and Brady. Passing leader Chad Henne had 9,715 passing yards in 4 years. That's an average of 2,428.75 per season. That's always been the Michigan way. You do know Harbaugh is going to do the same thing with Herbert. The LA Chargers are going to build the same team. Jim is run first, second and third. He would have used every QB in the draft the same way and why not when you have a complete team. It would have been stupid to showcase J.J. when you didn't need too. Glad, I was able to school you on Michigan football.

      @davidbresson8865 10 місяців тому +3

You want someone who can execute the scheme reliably, but to get that extra level you need someone who can go beyond that. That's what JJ is. He has an extra dimension of playmaking that he can bring out when the play just doesn't work as designed that those other guys don't do. You just don't see it nearly as much as with some others in the class because he only brings it out when the play doesn't work within structure, and he's so good at making the play work within structure. Combine that with the lower volume of dropbacks and you just don't have a lot of times when making one of those kinds of plays was called for.

I think this is one of those recency bias that ends up happening in Football were one expert seemingly switch the narrative on a player so dramatically everyone usually falls in line because in reality the draft is an endless series of variables with no sure thing. Dont get me wrong I think McCarthy is good and has excellent character, but he needed to put superman cape on a lot more to convince me is even a Top-10 guy. Further, the argument of "well it's not there because his team didn't need him to be Superman and look at these 20 isolated plays when the defense sold out on the run" isn't convincing either. Guys, he was a starting QB at major program I expect him to be capable of some nice throws. We can't heap praise on Caleb for being Superman than say a kid on a much better blue chip stocked team didn't need to show it and that he is a Top-5 lock.

When you draft Top 5 or even Top 10 those are guys you almost always confident can be day one (or at the very least Year One) needle movers, that isn't McCarthy, and honestly, I don't think it's right to expect him to live up to a pair of first-round picks (if the Vikings are the movers).

2.) Good at throwing on the move (Penix more of a pocket passer). 3.) Good at avoiding pressure and making off-schedule plays (throwing and running). 4.) Stays pretty good with his feet and can drive the ball well 5.) Makes big time throws when under pressure and in big time situations.
Penix- 1.) Great in the pocket. Slides pretty well to avoid pressure and make throws. 2.). Uncanny accuracy and anticipation on his throws. 3.). Has great touch (McCarthy not so much) and is ridiculous throwing downfield. 4.). Was the absolute go to guy on his team to make plays for his offense. 5.)Can run pretty well, but doesn’t do it very often and doesn’t throw on the run.
Here is the tale of the tape. Penix hasn’t shown that he is very adept at throwing on the run or off-schedule plays. McCarthy has.
McCarthy was never asked to be the focus of his offense, and throw the ball 40 times a game. Penix has.
Penix did not do very much play-action, under center drops, or turning his head away from defense and back. McCarthy has.
McCarthy has not shown consistent accuracy or touch, especially when throwing outside the numbers. Penix has.
Penix has shown to not be consistent with his feet when throwing and avoiding pressure (though he still seems accurate when his feet are off), McCarthy is better with his feet and squaring up on his throws.
Though McCarthy has displayed some great throws downfield, his anticipation and ability to “throw his receivers open” is nothing in comparison to Penix (McCarthy’s guys were much more open thanks to their running threat).
Penix has had more significant injuries, perhaps because he doesn’t avoid pressure quite as well as McCarthy (or perhaps because he was playing for Indiana; much less problems with injury when at Washington).
Both of them could be better at taking the short throws at times and not trying to push the ball down the field all the time (even though I like that about both of them), and thus might throw even less interceptions (like Bo Nix).
And for anyone who thinks Penix was a product of having great WRs at Washington, just go and watch him at Indiana. His Michigan game is a good one to watch. Also go and check those Washington WRs stats prior to Penix’s arrival. He was just as good at Indiana as Washington. He is very good. But him and McCarthy are very different.

I don't see a first round QB on film or on the stat sheet. I do see that with Penix and Nix.

Because you know very little about QB evaluation, it’s really simple though. If Penix or Nix were really good QBs they would not be in this draft class. They would have been drafted years ago.

All these virgin blogboys guys keep making the same mistake- JJ didnt have WRs like Odunze or Nabers. His WR1 is a slot guy and his WR2 is a third day guy.

And who did Caleb Williams have? What run game or defense did he have? I like JJ but what you gave isn’t a valid excuse when Drake Maye and Caleb Williams didn’t have 1st round WRs either, while having significantly worse run games and olines. They just didn’t ask JJ to do a lot, and that’s okay. Don’t make stuff up

The only things scaring people about Penix is the injury history, and how he crumbled under pressure against a pro style defense of the Wolverines. On the flip side, we don't know how McCarthy will fair in a 4th quarter pressure situation as he never really faced that adversity. His one loss, his team got blown out by half time.

Complete different style of qbs and offenses they played in. Both of their success will be very much attributed to scheme fit at the next level. McCarthy needs to go to a Shanahan/McVay style offense while Penix needs to go to an offense with a majority of the throws outside the numbers. Penix might seem like the better qb as well as being better statistically but hard to say McCarthy wouldn’t be on the same level if he had 3 more years of development like Penix.
