    Flunked at Machinist Mate A school and got reclassed as a CS. Motivated me a lot and ended up number 1 in my class. Spent 3 years in a shitty squadron and got orders at 7th fleet where I ended up cooking for the Vice Admiral in Japan on board USS Blue Ridge. Best ship in the whole Navy. Got reccomendations at the Pentagon and White House but ended up as a civilian. I dont like cooking but being a CS has taught me a lot. Now a civilian working as a registered nurse with the help of the GI bill. Loved my navy journey!!

    CS2 and all the rest of the CS's ( and MS's from previous years) I know at times you guys don't feel appreciated but I promise you are very much appreciated. Your efforts can make your shipmates really bad days seem so much better. You allow sailors to endure so much more then they could handle without your help.

    Petty Officer Harris, I'd like to commend you on informing current and future sailors on your opinions of the CS rating. I recently retired as A Senior Chief Culinary Specialist and I can honestly say that becoming a cook was the best decision I ever made in my military career. When I entered the Navy in the early 90's, I came in as an Electrician. I hated being an ET so I cross rated to become a MS which is now called CS.
    Yes the hours are long Shipmate but hard work builds character and you will be rewarded.
    The advice that I'd like to give you is to keep working hard and dont look at those things you deem as NEGATIVE to be bad. While working those long hours try to learn something new every day. Ask your Chief and Department head for more collateral duties and responsibilities. Dont limit yourself to just CS duties. Ask to do qualify other jobs throughout the ship, DONT LIMIT YOURSELF!!!
    Encourage the junior sailors that work for you. You must lead by example, if junior sailors see you talking in a NEGATIVE manner about the Navy and the CS rating they will soon do the same and their motivation to succeed will soon be diminished.
    Once again thanks for your hard work and dedication.Thank you for your service Shipmate.

    Long hours

  • @cheftomsd

    Days are long but when I was in (1972) you worked port and starboard so every other day you were off. When the rest of the crew was turning to, I was going on liberty.
    Also I never waited in a pay line or shot lines. No doubt pay lines have gone away, but they used to pay you in cash. Everyone was your friend as a cook. I liked the rate and then spent a career as a chef in restaurants.

    • @theofficialdaveharris8794
      @theofficialdaveharris8794  5 років тому

      euphoryuh I feel you. Check out my other videos about the CS rate. We work long hours and you are on your feet all day cooking or cleaning, it’s hard to to get a full lunch break because your so busy cooking. The plus side you can cook yourself what you want sometimes, you don’t have to wait in line to eat, you get days off during the middle of the week, you don’t stand duty, it’s easy to make rank, you can get stationed more places than any other rate.

    • @Euphoryaaa
      @Euphoryaaa 5 років тому

      The Official Dave Harris hmm yea tbh, a lot of other Corpsmen would think I’m crazy for wanting to leave the corpsmen lifestyle. It would really be a downgrade going to CS. We live pretty comfortably but I feel like when we do work hard it doesn’t pay off due to our low advancement rate. Even getting an EP isn’t a guarantee. I just wanna work a job where my hard work actually gets me somewhere and I’m not breaking my back for nothing.
      Every CS I seen looks dead inside but that 5 to 2 thing is pretty nice, especially for the CS’s on shore duty in Japan where I just came from.

    • @theofficialdaveharris8794
      @theofficialdaveharris8794  5 років тому +1

      euphoryuh I feel you about busting you ass and nothing to show for it. As a cook out to sea it’s tough most of us do feel dead inside when all you do is work but your hard work does pay off I made E5 in 3 years and I went to my first ship as a E1.

The way i see it, the cook should always take care of others needs before themselves, I am always the last to eat as a cook. And never serve anyone anything you wouldn't eat yourself, barring allergies. If everyone else has to eat catfish that you cooked, you should also eat some catfish.

Shipment Jan 30th, and 5 mins after they changed it to LS but they said Nov 1st they'll have a bunch of new jobs for me to choose from. I'm hoping I can get MC, OR GM. I cant work on the flight deck because I'm "color blind" fuck that test. I can see every color I just couldn't quite make out the numbers. Which screwed me big time. John Anthonycrispin it’s depends what kids of ship you on. My ship was a LPD it had a crew size of about 400 sailors and we had 16 cs

      This is great info I will not take this job , it’s Too much 14 hours of work , but how much would u say the facts that you have ranked up quickly would factor into being a cook, being a good idea .

    • @theofficialdaveharris8794
      @theofficialdaveharris8794  5 років тому +1

      John Anthonycrispin ranking up as a cook is a lot better than most rates because no one wants to be a cook. I made E5 in 3 years and I started from E1

      Cori Nicole Mitchell yes, so towards the end of A school they will give you a wish list and you just pick where you want to go. It was 3 choices W for west coast, E for east coast, and O for overseas. Thats what you do in A school but they will still put you wherever the navy needs you.

      Cori Nicole Mitchell no its very easy. They are not there to fell you the instructors want you to pass. It was 4 weeks long 2 weeks of book work and 2 weeks in the kitchen lab cooking, thats the fun part.

      Sam scholfield i would retire as a cs now because i already E5 and dont want to start over learning something new especially because now im going up for E6. But to be honest im thinking about getting out when my contract up and go reserves. But it is possible to retire as a cs its jist up to the individual.

Is it bad or something or do you think you could be out doing something better by the time you are 40 you could already be retired too.... just something to really think about man! And what the military really has to offer ..
