    The Shopsmith Whisperer. Very nice explanation of the collar and a logical application.

    This has made me decide to get the stop collar. Thanks for the video Tom, it answered some things for me.

      Yeah, me too. I'm going to be doing some "jointing" to size with the conical sander and had realized that adjusting the table height would allow me to "sneak up" on the final size, without "hogging" too much material at a time. (Higher is wider, and it narrows as you lower the table--closer to the "point" of the cone--until you get to the desired width). But getting the table to reliably and repeatably do that as I changed pieces was something I hadn't quite resolved. This is the obvious, elegant solution. Which is what I need, as I've got about 100 pieces, ranging from 32" to 8' to joint. Fortunately, I only need to joint one edge of each, to apply veneer tape, as all the other edges are either at the back of the unit or glued into dadoes.

      @@michaelarighi5268 should work. I have used the conical disc to smooth plywood edges many times. The smooth edges glue up very strong to edging and veneer banding.

    I had the stop collar on my previous ShopSmith and I loved it. It was amazingly accurage. Unfortunately, I don't have it on my current ShopSmith.

      I used my Shopsmith for years accurately without one. Not a necessity but does make accuracy a little easier.

    I recently ordered an adjustable stop collar from Shopsmith and was a little disappointed when it arrived that it did not come with the yellow stick-on label. Apparently, that is an option. Not a huge deal. I'll just order that the next time I place an order with them.

      @woodshopnerdery  Рік тому +1

      That's a bummer, sorry to hear that. I would be disappointed too. Did you know that before they sold the yellow scales you could print out your own from a "Shop Tips" PDF file? I posted about it on my community tab assuming others might be in your same boat. - ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxI_h3PiqmdETUXm5i3AAYj6dKLv77yL2o

    Not meaning any disrespect or hate; wouldn't it be easier to zero your collar, then zero your caliper, measure 4.5mm up on your caliper and adjust collar accordingly?

      I use an oshlun 6 inch set, had it 4 years and works well. At the time I bought it into was a good value compared to the fried 6 inch. But now seems like the fried is a better price. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012YILDQ

    I think I'll be putting that stop collar on my Christmas list. It's interesting to see someone working in metric. I'm an engineer and feel like I should strongly consider switching to metric. Did you "make the switch" or have you always been a metric guy?

    • @woodshopnerdery
      @woodshopnerdery  Рік тому

      Dana, they do run sales on the collar and don't forget to get the kit with the yellow scale.
      Yes, I converted from imperial to metric where I can. Unfortunately metric drill bits and router bits are not as easily available unless ordering online at some times elevated prices. I give a little more information in a comment I made to recent Rob Cosman video about metric vs. imperial. ua-cam.com/video/ZRxs23h3wro/v-deo.html&lc=Ugyi6PEQU0UXb-HG6Gt4AaABAg
