BEST way to remove airlock in radiator (remove air bubbles)

- Here's an easy way to get the air out of your coolant after working on the cooling system in your car - try using a spill-free coolant funnel like this one: amzn.to/36UrgGI
The car will eventually belch out all the air, But sometimes the car will start to overheat because of this air. For years I have struggled to find a way to get the air out of the system especially when the radiator is lower than some parts of the engine. I found this funnel device that brings the coolant higher than the highest point of the engine. I usually run the car for about 15 minutes and watch the air bleed out of the system. Hope you enjoy the video please feel free to comment on your experiences.

I'm confused. Why are we putting dirty fluid in the car?
Coolant can last 2 - 5 years and is pretty expensive. So if you know the coolant is still good it's best to drain it off and then use it again.
@@Jin-Ro right Kim. I run it through a coffee filter and put in in the reservoir/overflow tank, or back in the jug for use later.

2019 firmware update.....🤔 now the funnels are clear.... now I can sit all the way on the porch and watch!
Haha, it's true. :D I have one. It's great.
if the coolant is old best to replace it with a new coolant due to PH balance. Old coolant tends to be more acidic which causes the metal head gasket to rust and cause a blown head later.
I have that kit, highly recommend
this what most shops do and then charge you for the 2 gallons of coolant they didnt buy
And the reason why I change my own oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, etc. I do much more than that but that is the minimum you should do. You should also squeeze the two large hoses connected to the radiator while the funnel is still on. A bit more air will come out.
Instead of paying $25 for a $2 funnel I use a water bottle with the bottom cut off!😎
See how long that water bottle last when you turn the engine on, because you have to open the thermostat in order to get all the air out and you do that with the car running.
@@AUDIO2AUTOIt says He "uses a water bottle" so he knows what he's talking about. Also it's easy to fix the water bottle or get someone to hold it so it doesn't lol
@@matteo_syd7271 Hey if they like 220 degrees on their skin, go ahead and hold it.. lol
@@AUDIO2AUTO Agreed the water bottle method is asking for trouble. Also that kit is 15$ at peavey mart and now your equipped to proper fill for many vehicles.
I have this funnel, and am no mechanic, but have a
bit of a possible overheating issue since I found some
antifreeze on the ground after trying to bleed the coolant
system, I've watched a dozen videos on this and if I have
this right, what is shown here, is not going to
even begin to 'remove' any airlock in any way, zilch......
Buy this contraption though, make sure if fits your vehicle,
they come with several radiator cap interfacing adapters,
it is worth it's weight in gold, as far as being able to keep
enough coolant in it, monitor it etc, to get the job done,
but getting 'airlocks' out is an entirely different animal' .
Some people have found drilling a tiny hole in your thermostat helps a lot.
The hole leys trapped aif through, but it still does it's job blocking the flow of water to let your engine warm up nicely
Works great on Semi trucks too when your dumping in 12 gallons.
This still doesn't explain sometimes air bubbles get trapped in heater hoses and such this isn't a cure all by any means.
I hope this helps someone atleast but a good indicator would of air getting into the system us threw a leak of some sort 9/10 would be a gasket start with the easiest being radiator cap
Does fan n heater need to be turned on? How do we know when all the air bubbles are out? No more bubbles?
Heater on Gets trapped bubbles out of the core and heater hose lines. (My ex-race car has no heater or heater core so I skip that part.) When all the air is purged out of the system, you will no longer see bubbles come up out in your funnel. Has to be at operating temp and thermostat open. Note: a head gasket leak will put exhaust gases into your cooling system and will keep bubbles coming into funnel, and smell like exhaust. There is a kit for detecting this with dye added into your funnel and it changes color if exhaust gas is present in your system. FYI
Thank you very much for this clarification.
Raaaadiator haha thanks for the video brother!
Thanks very useful
Why do you need a funnel? Why don't you just idle the engine and circulate the coolant with the cap off for a bit and let the bubbles escape?
Coolant will flow out. Best to get a spill proof funnel, then at the end of purging the system, wrap a cloth around a screwdriver, stick it in the funnel and lift so it doesn't pour over radiator
To allow the fluid to be higher than the coolant system, allowing air to rise to the highest point 👍
It helps to elevate the front end at least 6 inches which will help purging air.
I tried to purge air out witht he cap off. The coolant expanded and ran out of the top of the filler neck. I bought the kit used in this video and worked great. Make sure you run the engine until the thermostat opens (when hot and at operating temp). I then run engine up to like 1500 rpms for a 10-15 seconds to make sure all air is out. FYI-- I also have two holes drilled into my thermostat flat surfaces to purge any air out that may have been trapped. Old school trick.
aah ok i understand the concept bring the water up higher than it would be so the air can escape, i squeeze my top radiator hose and i hear water lapping i cant get that to go away because the shape of the hose and the positioning of it
Put something under your front tires to slightly raise it or park it on an incline like a small hill or driveway that goes up...

I just changed my thermostat. I'm bleeding my coolant system with the heat on hot, fan on low and the fan will not shut off as well as it's running hot. Does anyone have any suggestions?
What’s the name of that tool
What is the fluid that he initially puts in the funnel?
Tea
why on earth are you re-using coolant?
He filtered with a t shirt
He filtered it with a tee shirt
hehe.. "uses a funnel to return the excess from funnel."
Just curious what was the reason for putting extra coolant in the funnel?
To make sure the air bubbles were coming out
Ya numpty, he told you in the video 📹
@@whitesuperman5199 do I have to flush it or could I jus start doing what he’s doing
The weight pushes the air out because it's higher up
When it gets up to temp , turn the HVAC to heat to purge air left in heater core
So you turn on a fan that's behind your heater core how does that help? Lmao fan won't chase an air pocket
@@rossboyack7434 gets the fluid circulating which will push air bubbles out
Yes heating the fluid always removes dissolved gases, when it works at operating temp
Nope

Wrong coolant added to THAT Toyota car.
Not working for me.
What if your car doesnt have a radiator cap??
They put the radiator in upside dow Lol just kidding. Whats the year and model of the car? I'm not 100% sure but maybe the radiator isn't suppose to be opened and the coolant lasts for the entire lifetime of the car.
Wtf happen here I’m lost
My car doesn't push the bubbles out when I start it. It just pushes the coolant out.
😯 oh boy........
rome seveneightsixnine what does that mean ?
@@Alex-oy3zv .......blown head gasket possibly.
The engine is telling you that you have too much coolant inside it. That is why the coolant pours out of the radiator.
Mine pushes the coolest out when I ref it, what are the problems
Okay I have to put my two cents in here. As an ASE certified engine guy, this is probably the dumbest advice I have ever seen. This process varies from vehicle to vehicle and is not a one catch-all. Sorry but do not follow this advice!
Every one of these videos has a radiator with a cap. Mine has no cap.
That is normal for some cars I believe. I've read that some coolant is supposedly good for the entire lifespan of the vehicle. My guess is they aren't expecting you to ever change out the fluid. What's the year, make, and model of your car?
You have to put coolant in the overfill tank
@@brettnelson7518 hardly not the truth. No such thing!!! There's always an overfill tank and those that don't actually have a rad cap on the radiator have to fill their system in the overfill tank.
Buy a different car!!!
This video makes absolutely no sense.
Spot on works like a charm
😂😂😂
I’ve got one of these but almost entirely stopped using it when I got a vacuum filler. Vacuum filling is even faster and more effective. Some systems with a pressurized overflow tank won’t take coolant well. If you vacuum fill it’s done. You can put the cap on and drive it.
English please
Most systems are sealed besides the resisvors now
Yes why would you put dirty fluid back in its a no brainer

Dirty ass antifreeze and water.
