Met him backstage in Vegas in the early 90s. Very nice. I asked him to insult me. He said, "nope. I only insult people who matter." 👍🤣
That’s priceless.
That's an awesome insult!
I love it - so jealous!
HAHAhahaa thank you for this story drop
he had the quickest quips in the biz.
not only is he authorized to insult everyone. he's REQUIRED to do so!
It would of been a honour
It's By LAW!
baddmanaz
I bet he was insured by Lloyds of London to insult everyone.
It’s in his contract.
I envied him...he had carte blanche to insult people and get thanked and paid for it. If we insult people we get punched in the nose.
"Can I grab you by the legs? I wanna dust." - NO one ever since would have gotten that so quick, so well and so delightfully.
I got to see him a couple years ago with my father. We laughed so hard. Now they're both gone, but I love the memory
My father died just last June, Rest In Peace to our old men and to Don. Glad you have the memories
@@joeyscerbo7776 May for mine. We were tight. Not to the memories stage yet, but yeah, super glad I have them
Do you think Don's up there in heaven making fun of God, Jesus & the apostles or is he in Hell telling jokes about the Devil?
“ I don’t care what you are.
You are fat” - Don rickles #classic #respect
I replayed it so many times and everytime it was even more hilarious. What an absolute legend!
"... I tell you this..."
just out of nowhere its genius.
i think he was pointing at Madden!
@@stephensoldner Yep, there was no one else in that general area as big as Madden. LOL
The big shots came out to see Rickles. He played that audience like a violin and I've never seen anyone else do that on SNL.
Wow! This was so captivating I TOTALLY forgot out was supposed to be SNL!!! 🤔
That’s because no one else could or can to this day. I grew up loving Mr.Warmth and I miss him dearly.
This is what performing is all about. Rickles was a master who perfected his craft. He could say anything--even now--and the audience would drink it in like ambrosia. That's called RESPECT.
Takes an incredible amount of talent and experience to pull that off. He was a master. Saw him perform at Tahoe in 1970....laughed so hard it hurt.
He had no filter but everybody in the business respected him.
The genius of Don Rickles workin the room like no other. Total improv. R.I.P. Don Rickles. The world misses you
Geez Rickles was on fire. One of the best opening SNL monologues.
This man is just incredible to watch. The confidence, the charisma, the timing...a true legendary professional. I hang on every word. He's on my Mount Rushmore of Comedy.
He has comedic vision. He knows where he’s going and we follow.
Every word! And don't want to blink watching him! So fascinating thinking of other legends (see R Williams) who came after him, the inspiration they took from Rickles is easy to see...
His style goes way back to the vaudeville days...Catskills, burlesque. You had to be quick in your delivery because you only had so much time to make 'em laugh before the next act, stripper, or main attraction.
Think Henny Youngman, Rodney Dangerfield...
when the best way to avoid getting your ass kicked regularly is by being funnier than anyone else you learn quickly.
@@garyaugustus1009 ur right. very vaudevillian.
I'm so glad i found out about who Don Rickles was just recently, i have so many videos of him to watch ahead. The best comedy i've ever seen
Same, he's great.
Same!
Omg. You are in for a treat!
Hold up!!! You're just learning of Rickles....please tell me you watched him roast ppl with Dean Martin.
Rickles is someone who is quick with his words and responses. Do me a favor......look up Foster Brooks on Dean Martin's Roast....TRUST ME!!!
On this night it wasn’t SNL it was the Don Rickles Show
ABSOLUTELY!!!!
If the host is any good it should mostly be that way all the time.
I remember this night so well - we talked about it all week !!
Agreed, Danyal. I wonder if that is why SNL has stopped using comedy icons. They don't want to be upstaged. There is a Facebook group that wants to see Carol Burnett host SNL. Every woman on that show owes Carol Burnett a debt of gratitude, but NBC ignores it!
@@AmosPressley Wow!! Carol Burnett!! Now that would be an Awesome episode!
My favourite Rickles bit goes something like this..."Frank Sinatra saved my life one time!! I was getting the crap beat out of me by four great big guys behind The Sahara in Vegas....they were really working me over....all of a sudden a door opened and Sinatra said "Okay guys....I think he's had enough."
@@bobzani - For sure it was Rickles that I heard tell it.
I heard that same story - but it was Shecky Greene telling it.
@@ROGER2095 Yes. It was Shecky Greene, and it really happened. A friend of mine read the Sinatra biography, and he said so
@@ROGER2095 Definitely a rickles line
Rickles actually had a Twitter account in his final years. One of his actual tweets: "I miss Frank Sinatra. He used to slap me to relax!"
I get the feeling that if they let him, he could have done the entire show by himself.
ROGER2095 - EASILY!!!
He basically did. If you watch the whole episode, Rickles pretty much sabotaged most of the sketches. He kept ad-libbing, breaking character, and confusing the hell out of the cast.
No problem for Don!
He would be funnier than the entire current cast they have.
And it would've been the best show since the late '70s.
I call this "scorched earth crowd work" by the time Don Rickles is done, the WHOLE audience is dying laughing. What a legend.
Jeff Ross is No Where in HELL Close to This Perfection!
Ross is just Funny Vulgar!
Rickles got away with it because deep down you knew he really loved you. One of my favorite lines of his is: "You know, Larry, you and I have known each other a long time now and frankly,... I've never liked you." He may have said that to either Larry King or Regis (who liked to be called Larry) both laughed until they died. Seriously.
Never get away with it now, no matter what. First black, Mex, Chinese or homosexual insult...CANCELED. A different and far scarier country than anytime in our history, including 1861.
One day we'll all be cancelled just because we were aware of this video even if we never watched it. That's way too scary because it could happen. That's fascism!
@Marc Petrie Every day for them is opposite day. Anti fascist is fascist. If they're woke that just means they are really ASLEEP. One day they will be rudely awakened into a bloody nightmare. Hopefully, we won't be around for that.
Clearly, one of the best monologues ever, ever in the history of SNL.
The best monologue of snl was norm Macdonald
Sure beats Steven Segal's
Rickles, Norm, Chappelle, Robin Williams, Galifianakis… legendary stand ups who killed in their SNL monologues. Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor were excellent, too
Simply a master. Don Rickles was one of those rare talents who could say things that weren't even inherently funny, but you would still laugh because his timing and physical expressiveness were so absolutely perfect at all times.
This country could use a good Don Rickles enema right about now.
ha ha ha
God, I love that idea!!! I grew up with Johnny Carson, Dangerfield, Rickles, Pryor, Carlin, etc. No one left anymore ☹️
Merch Marine He’s so full of shit that he needs it everyday!
@@despicableme8762 - Bill Burr!
Absolutely! Perfect solution*
I've never seen a set, interview or performance of his that didn't make me laugh...A true legend !
More laughs in this 10 minute clip than the past 10 years of SNL.
RIP Don!
Yes.
Tru' Dat!!!
So true it hurts.
Scourge to All Humanity !
fuck the new cast - the last few iterations. they are sorry leftist naive morons! comedy needs to confront, expose, educate and entertain and they fail on those fronts.
This is like rare footage. He left his mark everywhere. My favorite comedian
"What are you? A Bird" CLASSIC
he was quick
@@rahard Sharp as a ...something...
Madden just chillin' in the audience.
I saw him!! He must have just spotted him and made the joke
He's there in the audience. He certainly isn't working on making Madden the video game worth buying.
@realworldtalking Good get the fuck outta here.
@@seanstandup9157 It was 1984.
this was a special moment, to have him host. added such class and importance to the show.
That was the true meaning of legendary. One of the best ever. It’s a privilege to see someone who is that talented and sharp do his thing.
- "are you italian.. who's italian?
- (crowd cheers)
- "where the hell were you in worldwar II? they could have used you.."
LOL That was a good one. Btw I believe Don was in the Navy during the war.
Fun Fact: The Italians were allied with Nazi Germany in World War II.

That's amazing 💖💯👏
Too many crybabies these days. Lol
"Laugh at life" that is something we need to go back to instead of getting offended at everything
Yes that is the key to not letting life getting you down. You can always find something good about your life no matter what is happening. In 1974 I broke my ankle and had 6 screws and a plate put in. 2 good things happen, I only had to wash my sox 1/2 as often. I was on crutches for 12 months they wore all the hair out of my arm pits saved on right guard. The world right now is just thinking about all the bad things happening and not looking at all the good that is way more than the bad because the press keeps only talking about the bad and ignoring all the good.
Well said on both of your comments. Why everybody is so butthurt now I don't understand. Yes life sucks sometimes, but
you gotta be able to laugh at life and yourself occasionally, otherwise you'll be a miserable prick/bitch for the rest of your life.
I can’t help but like the guy. He was from a time when a joke was just words. Nobody got offended and even if they did, they learned to get over themselves. One of the greats from a time long since passed. A relief from 2020.
True great
When he was coming up in the business, the people he made fun of lived knowing people would make fun of them and because of our culture they just had to learn to live with it. As time went by, those same people started to believe they have value beyond just being the butt of somebody's joke and with the support of people who agreed with them, started to stand up for themselves. To counter that 'revolution' right wingers came up with a word to describe them.....WOKE, which people like that do when they have no acceptable reasons for thinking or acting the way they do. I am not knocking Don. Due to the entirety of his routine, it is much easier to accept what he says, but in a sense, his making fun using stereotypes such as the interaction with the Chinese lady, is out of place in a world that has, literally 'woke' up to the insensitivity of that type of humor. R.I.P Don.
@@normanacree1635 Nope . "Woke" is a term used to describe an excuse dreamed up by emotionally disturbed spoiled churls who like to ruin everyone else's party, bully people, and break their toys while standing behind the false justification of self-righteous virute signaling. So-called "pprogressives" are miserable, hateful people, and they try to drag everyone else down with them. The only good ones are in cemeteries.
Saw him live a few times at Harrahs Lake Tahoe.....quickest wit ever... left the show exhausted from laughing.... I was an entertainer there and he introduced me from the stage...one of the highlights of my career.
Met Don back stage Harrahs casino /hotel lake Tahoe. One of the most nicest human beings in the entertainment world . Funny but insulting in a nice way. Everyone wants to be insulted by him as it was a sign that he liked you .
This aired in January of 1984? Today, 10-11-2020, is the first time I've seen it. Damn that was a long nap. What else are you hiding, You Tube?
wanna see a man compare the taste of various waters?
@Honest Person Lorne Michaels is a legend.......in his own mind.
I know! I never saw this before!
if you can find the other clips he is constantly getting Joe Piscopo to break and there is a running gag throughout the whole show with the two of them. hysterical!
@@ggeer It's probably in a season of SNL Michaels won't release, he's such a pompous ass.
I had never seen anybody work the crowd at SNL like this. I can’t believe I just found this, what a legend.
Only Don Rickles could get away with being Don Rickles.
There’s a clip of him on the View. They talked about his sense of humor and surprisingly Whoopi and company were respectful
j could watch Don all day long. May he make the man upstairs laugh for ever. Bless you Don
Just like Dean Martin would say, "this man is a beast, monster of insult".
"Merchant of venom"
"Black-belt in hatred"
'Duke of Dager'
I watched this show the night it happened. He took over the whole show like no one I've ever see do. Memorable. Glad to see these clips up.
He even managed to insult the Swedes and the Swiss at the same time.
I love how he'll insult people but then bring them back up. Quality comedy!
Thinking the same thing!
I bet this act would work today. You can't say that about many of them.
no punchlines. no hits. no tags. no zingers. any derp could roast this wannabe jester. stick to voice over work.
@@Xxd04xX I don’t think this is his best work, but I’ll agree to disagree on the overall quality of his work. His insult comedy was top notch, and it’s a damn shame he’s gone.
Rickles was with me from my first memories until the day he died and is still with me ..Not only a unique comedian but also a great actor . Love always Don .
His lines wouldn't be funny on a page - but his delivery made them hysterical.
Got to see him at a casino - great night. Loved the man.
That's why Rickles was a master comedian. The best ever in the business.
This guy was the best. I had seen him in person many times - just killed me laughing every time. Miss him for sure.
Been watching him for 50 years. He will tear anyone a new one including himself.
Yeah... I'm Pete Johnson, but thanks, I've gotten that 3 times a day for ten years.
“I’m going to get a paper, you start.”🤣
Best monologue I've seen. He was truly funny and one of a kind!
Jesus Christ Don was the undisputed unbeatable legend of comedy.
The only comedian who insulted anybody and everyone and got a pass
Except Sinatra. Only light jests, but nothing like how he treated everyone else.
Rickles had to wait until Sinatra died, and then some more time, for him to tell jokes about Sinatra's mob-ties.
@@igunashiodesu Yup
@@igunashiodesu Not true. He would go at Sinatra unlike anyone else would, and Sinatra loved it.

Ummm Joan Rivers anyone? She did mostly self deprecation but she also was an insult comic in her day.
I don't remember this, and I thought I'd seen all SNL shows. This is HILARIOUS! I'm so glad it came on. I miss this guy.
John Madden passed away yesterday; one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time! Best NFL commentator as well! Recognized here by the Legend Mr. Don Rickles! The 1978 Oakland Raiders Super Bowl Team were one of the best ever!!
Started watching Don Rickles back in 2014 after I graduated high school I never laughed so hard in my life! I was so upset the day he passed away he was such an inspiration to me. R.I.P Don Rickles
I found him right after he passed. He was in an episode of Comedians in cars getting coffee with Jerry Seinfeld. I knew him from Toy Story, but it wasn't until then when I realized he was a legendary act and basically part of the Rat Pack. I watched old clips during school and I loved hearing his stories.
You two young people really missed out. But thank goodness for UA-cam so you can see this great comedian at his very best.
Larry Shackle seriously though.. if it wasn’t for UA-cam, I would have never found out about Don Rickles.
@@datboi1971 Same here. Not to mention the decades of show appearances and roasts.
He's just simply amazing. A true genius! He was the gold standard of comedy!!
Even in his final years, when his body began to betray him, his mind was still razor sharp.
What a legend. He would walk out on stage with no prepared material. Such an entertainer. What crowd work. He's missed.
Don was one in a million, 40 years ago last August on our honeymoon, my wife and I saw his show at the Resorts international hotel in New Jersey. Owned by Merve Griffin then, I was on leave while in the United States Army. We are still married to this day 40 years, and will never forget his wonderful show at Resorts. What a talented man he was.
Edit: And what a beautiful wife God has blessed me with, I will be forever in love with her.
One in a million? How about one in 80 million? I think you would have to look at waaaaay more than a million people to find somebody else like him. R.I.P. Don.
Now that's how you work the room, perfect!
I'm a huge Don Rickles mark. How'd I not know that Rickles hosted SNL? I have to see the whole episode now...
I don't remember when Peacock added all episodes, but if it was after this comment, you can watch it now on the free tier! (It'll probably have a bunch of sketches missing because of music licenses though.)
Well this was the SNL era where the cast was TRASH, and i believe the last year before Lorne Michaels came back to his reign.. early to mid 80s was just a weird time, a lot of cast turnaround. Eddie Murphy was the best thing they had during this time, until 87-88 when they finally got the groove back.
Boy… I miss this humor today. I6s to PC today
Rickles invented the Mike drop! Who knew?
Tartikoff must have almost had a coronary event.
Between the mic drops and the screaming, I bet the sound guy lost his hearing that night! Love Rickles!

Thanks for posting this classic bit of Rickles! He was the last comedian who could get away with this kind of humor......alas, it would never fly today. Love the way he would go right into the audience - so rare to see that today!
Sad but true. That's when comedy was truly comedy. No one got butt hurt over a joke like they do now.
Love how he just took over the show. He raised insults into an art form. What other comic could go on stage with little material and kill a room by insulting people? One of the all-timers.

How hard can someone laugh for crying out loud? It can be painful listening to Rickles rip all or any ethnic origin. It is so outrageous you simply cannot be offended because it is so outlandish as to not be believed. Completely out of the box.
