Ep207
Pete!! Thanks for giving us that bit of closure. I absolutely loved and missed Pete.
I second that, such a miss when he parted ways!
Me too. He has started his own channel, I saw. Pearl in a can. Good to see that he is well.
I agree. His can-do attitude and positivity was a feature of the whole project. Big shoes almost filled by Paddy and Co.
@TR4zest - Thanks! Went right over and subbed. His first video is really great, it already has over 200k views!
Seeing them hug it out choked me up. I bet there was butting-of-heads during the project, because that's inevitable, but it definitely makes everyone happy to see things somewhat smoothed over.
Hats off to Raul. Without him & Darlene there would be no Tally Ho.
The silent partners who gave an entire workshop to a crazy Brit and his $1 rotten boat. Without them, we wouldn't be here.
My thoughts exactly, beautiful human beings.
@@Imkrhn Indeed. What a gift to Leo and to us.
Quite literally the foundation of this entire thing
Don't forget Pancho.
I'm happy to see Pete again.
He has his channel to...as mentioned in the video.
Bless poor Pete. Anxiety is no joke but I'm glad he's been on to say Hi and Bye. Really, really good for you too Leo in keeping quiet about Pete's need to escape the camera in the face of all the hassle people have been giving you all these years. I'm sure you'd have liked to have been able to say something but not at the expense of betraying a person's trust and privacy. You all have my highest admiration, and for context I mostly think people are dickheads.
Facts
Or as Leo might say, "Some mates can be bell ends."
For context, you are correct.
Leo’s tact and propriety is one of the show’s enduring qualities
well said
Remember when the boat was always 2 years away?
It still is for me. I'm waiting to greet Tally Ho and the Captain and crew to the UK.
Now the race is two years away!
Our little baby has grown up. 😢
Hey Leo! What a treat it’s been watching along this incredible project! I got to meet you last summer at your open house - that really seared the Tally Ho into my mind and helped me understand the magnitude of your accomplishment. Be proud 😀. Keep us posted on the Fastnet race - seeing that in person would be a real experience !
And yet they still managed to get it done 2 years early!
Whatever transpires, Leo Goolden has made a name for himself as one in a thousand. The project would have defeated many, but he always came through with fortitude, resilience, patience, and forbearing to keep many threads together and meet the challenges with true British grit. Anyone who has ever watched any episode will wish him fair winds and happy sailing.
Thankyou for your words, Raul. You and Darleen made the start of Tally Ho's rebuild possible - wonderful. And I hope Pancho finds a good home. To all the folks who worked on Tally Ho, I thank you all.
Soon as I saw Raul, I thought of Darlene and Pancho ❤🦜
Very heartfelt moment with Raul. Thank you for sharing, all these years have been a hell of a ride!
perhaps Leo could have added him and his wife's name to the boat
I usually don't tear up, but that was a special moment.
Its never too late? @diverdave4056
Seeing Pete touch base kind of feels full circle. Well done!
You’re a class act, Leo, in addition to being a skilled boat builder. I suspect I’m not the only one who’s benefited from your example of the power of community and relationship. Best of luck in the next stages of your journey.
What's funny to me is in my opinion, the reconstruction of Tally Ho is the least of Leo's accomplishments since the 1st episode was posted. He's brought new people to an industry struggling to find skilled workers, formed new relationships between others to further their great projects, and inspired who knows how many people watching at home to pursue boat building as hobby or profession. All of that is invaluable.
Leo IS one of thoughs EXTRAORDINARY people who make things happen without making anyone the bad guy.
Yes, indeed. Talented craftsmen like them will never be out of a job. Here’s hoping that younger generations are taking note and realizing that a college degree is many times only worth the paper that it is written on.
90 percent of life happens when we show up.
Oh how I wish I was 24 and looking for a job in Leo's world with the skills I have now and then for that matter then. I was given the gift of having the "hands" of many trades. I suppose being 85 and in a wheelchair would be an issue now eh, LOLOLOL. Onward Leo, Onward and all the best for having us all along on this great journey.
@@moltderenou My grandson, then 12, and I watched the series from close to the beginning together two summers ago. Next thing I knew he was in the shed chiseling knots out of some oak planks and filling in with graving pieces.
Finally got Pete closure! Great video
I would love to see a financial breakdown of this adventure. What it cost of everything, and comments on how it took place, surprises, projected cost.
I can’t be the only person who shed a few tears watching this episode. What an amazing group of people. Thanks for shearing this with us Leo.
I lost it when he was saying goodbye (for now) to Raul. What an interesting and eclectic group of people!
This was my favorite UA-cam series ever, It was nice to see all of the old faces one more time. My only gripe was that I also wanted to see Pancho again. She might not have done much work on the boat, but she always added a tough of color and comedy in her many appearances. I miss that bird.
It's not finished.
Methinks Leo is holding out. Won't be surprised if Pancho becomes a Tally Ho crewmember sailing the seven seas...
@@vaughnturley5475Leo told a while ago that he cannot take Pancho to sea - she would need too much care and attention that cannot happen in a boat offshore… and Leo asked whether somebody would be willing to take responsibility for her for the next 30 years or so…
Pete’s the real deal…glad he is doing well…
God bless Raul and Darlene
The world needs more people like them. ❤
@@jamiegibson1010 I second your notion
Yet, we know there are plenty of others touching our lives ... daily ... perhaps not as youtube-ly as Raul and Darlene
Life is plentiful, enriching and invigorating
What does that mean?
Thanks for giving us beautiful closure of Tally Ho's yesterdays. I've not missed a single episode since you brought her up from Oregon. Now I'm looking forward to watching all her tomorrows.
As Mr Churchill once said under slightly different circumstances. 'This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is perhaps the end of the beginning'
Originally I thought I watched the show for the boat , which was great, but it turns out it was for the people. Thanks for a very powerful show on building a community and using a boat to do so. My favorite channel on youtube.
Well said
Well said.
The real Tally Ho was the friends we made along the way?
This is a correct statement
Spot on
Raul and Darlene. Special in every way a human should be. Like a sunset, a picture or video doesn’t do justice. We need to experience people like this in life.
So good seeing the team again, and stoked that seems like Bob & Paddy are going to be crewing in the future - I love those two!
Anyone who watched the first few episodes was probably face palming like me thinking you gotta be kidding - that’s a pile of firewood in the shape of a boat! This ain’t gonna last. Well Leo I’d take my hat off to you except I’ve already eaten it! What a mission. What an outcome. I don’t think even you appreciate yet what you guys accomplished. Fair winds my friend.
I was right there with you. It truly seemed impossible... and yet here it is.
I started with the episode about the building inspector (episode #7). At that time I thought boy this kid is in way over his head. Leo quickly made me change my mind.
Thats a great saying, pile of firewood shaped as a boat !
it wasn't even good as firewood 😂
@riccardocacchioli9952 wet rotten firewood
About 4 years ago I've burned out in my office job. I was kind of mush in my brain for a couple of weeks and couldn't really do anything. In that time I discovered this channel and started following along. I also started a big personal journey of finding a profession that better suited me. 4 years later I'm now the apprentice in a really lovely locale carpentry restoring really old listed buildings, and I am really happy about that.
I'm not sure if I'd ended up here without this channel... thank you!
❤
On full display here is the tremendous amount of wood shipbuilding skill in Port Townsend. Skills that are a dying breed.
This is where it really sinks in that Tally-Ho is let loose. Having watched the project from the beginning, seeing all the wonderfull people that have left their mark. I must express, that I have the utmost respect for Leo who has stayed sharp and has endured through the years. All the best from me here in Germany, looking forward to T-H´s future adventures.
It is improper to use the term "sinks in" when referring to a ship. It's bad juju.
@@MrHahaJayuman Maybe you could suggest the correct German idiom?🙂
@@michaelblythe9739 Hier wird es uns nun wirklich bewusst, dass Tally-Ho jetzt freigesetzt ist. Anyway, @MrHahaJayuman has a point, and it is also to be taken humorously. Lighten up.
This has been, hands down, the best and most diverse collection of skills ever combined on UA-cam, or maybe anywhere. Boat restoration, historical record, woodworking, the expert use of all sorts of tools, professional video presentation/writing/production/editing, excellent project management, heartfelt management of people, deft management of resources, deft collection of resources, art, magic, laughter, community building, an expression of social equality, and an end result that will turn heads for another 100 years. Leo, you saved a boat and built more than a few people along the way. Fair winds on your next endeavor. I hope you got everything you wanted and needed from this project, and in all your years to come. Sampson Boat Building is truly world class.
Well said! Couldn't agree more... 🇨🇦🇨🇦 from Ontario
Don't forget the music! I need a Tally Ho! playlist.
Well said, all of it!
""Leo, you saved a boat and built more than a few people along the way. ""
Perfect!
Raul, your generosity of letting Leo start the project at your property!! Changed my life.
Thank You! Thank You! I have watched all your episodes from beginning to end. They have meant so much to me. I am your 94 year old follower here in Yuma, AZ. You and your crew are the best. This is not goodbye, but I am looking forward to your next episodes. God Bless! and please come back soon!
Seeing Raul again really hits the heart.
You missed out the real hero of the whole build, Pancho!
Lol.
Ya I was hoping to see him too
There is a post about her over at channel's instagram.

I know how you feel. I haven't watched that long but looking back and realizing that the time I've watched this series is measured in years is crazy.

So glad to hear Pete’s story. Thank you Leo
Leo, you are a genius. The way you edit your videos, the planning of the 'story', the wonderfully tight community you are part of, ...the works! Well done. (I
have watched from about episode 10 and look so much forward to every second saturday, here in Nysna lagoon in South Africa.
I now also follow Pete's videos, great to see
Thank you Leo for a hell of a ride that lasted 7 years of my life. What a fantastic journey! I will never forget this. A tear from Stockholm Sweden 😢
Wow, yes, 7 years, for most of us it went by quickly but for those who were at it day after day, what amazing talent and tenacity. Thanks.
Poncho? Oh my gosh, there is no closure without Poncho!
Merry Christmas one and all!
She's being re-homed, might already have happened. I suspect it was too much for Raul to cope with these days.
It was surprising to see Raul in that segment, and I must admit I teared up.
Very emotional, and their contribution to the project was huge.🙏
If you didn't well up watching Raul you've no business at this channel!!
So glad to hear that Bob is onboard for the long sail back to the UK.
Bob is a very serious dude. If I was going round the Horn I'd want him aboard
@@jlancs228 My money is on Northwest Passage. A path less travelled. A very hardcore adventure. A trundle down the Maritimes might also float Leo's boat. But for now it is all idle speculation.
Awesome shot of Tally Ho at the end. Saving the best for last
The greatest show on Earth, land or sea
Haven't cried this much in ages
Watched this from day one. When you were looking round the boat and pulling rotten bits off and seeing the state of it, I thought you were mad. Watching your work ethic and boat building skills, it only took me a couple of episodes to realise that you were going to finish the project. Not only finish it, but finish it to a quality that the original designer of the boat would have been proud of. Will be waiting in anticipation to see her in the Fastnet Race.
So nice to see you reconnect with everyone and really a treat to see Pete! I’m glad he’s taking care of himself even if it meant an abrupt exit. Feeling such affection for the entire crew. Well done. ❤️🎶❣️
I've been following for YEARS! I'm not sure if this is an ending or a new beginning,, or both... Sad in ways but exciting in others. Please please take us along on your journey where ever it takes you!! God speed and we ALL look forward to the next installment of that grand girl Tally Ho!!!
I have followed this project from my little place here in England, I have watched every single episode and loved every minute. It's wonderful to see the old faces again, I even said to myself "Pete, what are you doing?" when we saw him. It was also amazing to see Raul again, I did tear up a bit, you can see that he is still hurting, and anyone with a heart can feel his pain. Like the late Queen Elizabeth said "grief is the price we pay for love", and it's obvious Raul loved Darlene very much.
Fair winds and calm waters to all, and a very happy Christmas.
Some people will see Tally Ho and think it’s just another beautiful classic yacht. They’d be missing quiet a lot… Wish the best to all the crew :)
Bittersweet to close out that chapter of your life. I suspect that you will look back on those days with that amazing community you created as the best days of your life. I've been a Patreon supporter since the days when you listed every one of us in the credits and it has been a pleasure to feel like I contributed to something so worthy as the Tally Ho. This departure video is a nice way for we supporters to bid farewell to our imaginary internet friends in the Tally Ho community. Now I have to get back to work and actually finish my own boat.
Heartfelt beautiful episode Leo. What a mensch you are. The universal gratitude in this footage was so gracious, so beautiful. Great videography as well especially the tightly cropped long lens seascapes. And that wide closing shot of Tally Ho, Ooph, just sublime.
Such a surreal moment. I have been watching through some of the hardest times of my life. You have been the amazing constant that brings lights to my days. Thank you I look forward to the new adventure ahead.
May I say watching this Tally Ho has had a massive effect on those that have worked on here. It's as if part of their souls are built into her as a legacy to what people are truly capable of. I can also say on my behalf having watched every single vlog of tally ho's journey to life again it has affected me too and I can't explain it. For over 18 months I have been working on my boat and for some reason I feel the same I love for my little boat and some part of me is in her too. I look forward to the adventures of Tally ho now as begins a new life.
Thank you, Raul! Without yours and Darlene's kindness to Leo, this extraordinary project might never have happened.
That was a great wrap-up for the project. Thanks to all!
Great to see Raul looking so well. Without him and Darleen none of this would have happened. I hear Backtrack is still with Pete. I presume Sailor has gone to keep Darleen company. A very powerful and moving video. I hope all of them can come and visit the UK at some time. Outstanding 👏
I was fortunate enough to find this UA-cam channel early and even more fortunate enough to meet Leo early (do you remember the big bear dog and the dinghy Leo) it’s been a real pleasure to see this fine old lady restored to sailing. I wish you the best, and more importantly, the best to all of the crew that have worked on her for all these years. Please wave if you see us and our green lobster boat out and about!
Good to see you two hugging.
Thank you very much for sharing this with us. Feels like being part of the family
... still remember the first scarf on the keel, I thought... hmm, this kid might be able to pull this off. What a stunning vessel. cheers!
How many special people has Tally Ho over the years brought together. Bonds that are tight. Friendships formed and lasting. Here we are now. Sharing a moment in Tally Ho's journey. A wonderful experience that we've witnessed. Great to see old faces. Hi Pete ! Wonderful Raul.... What..... No parrot ? No Leo ! ! ! That's not good enough. That loyal bird. Sight foreman ! Miss her.
Take care.
Raul you are such a gracious man. I hope you nourish from Darlene's kind spirit. She remains with you. Tally Ho has touched so many people's lives. Thank you to the whole team for putting a part of themselves into the project.
So great to see the old crew ! Impressive to see Dylan's new upgrades ( yes, we toolmaker types do notice ) . And of course good to see "The Foundry" and all their impressive work . Really a heartwarming moment with Raul - without who, he and Darlene - the Tally Ho project may have collapsed . Bless Them ! 💖 ! Treasured memories for a half-million fans worldwide !
Leo, you are special. Had it not been for your dream Tally Ho would not have come back to life, to live again. You have touched and inspired many people. Your videos have been the main ones I have watched since you began building or rebuilding your dream boat. I was impressed at how you made your dreams into a reality that came true. Your videos are an excellent example of how good people can work together to do good things. I wish I could have done more to help you. I will be looking forward to going with you ( in your videos) when you go on your adventures. You have the best UA-cam videos on UA-cam, in my opinion. A man making his dreams come true step by step and taking us along for the adventure, step by step. What could be better. I am sure there are a lot of us out here who would love to do what you did and have the help of all the good people who helped you bring your dream into reality. Thank you all for the good work you have done.
I used to run a schooner in the 1970s named ''NINA''. Built in 1928 and won the race from NYC to Santander, then went on to win the Fastnet in the same year. ''NINA'' now lies at the bottom of the Tasman Sea. She disappeared in a horrendous storm.
When I sailed her on Long Island Sound NY, I would get all sorts of people putter over an stroke her caprail as they took a trip down memory lane. I am sure ''TALLY HO'' will receive similar tributes when she reaches the UK. Well done on your project, Leo. May you have many adventures sailing her.
Remember the mast points toward the sky, and the bowsprit shows the direction of travel.
Loved the video. Thanks Leo. But when will the box set of Duchess of Desire be coming out. You left us on such a cliffhanger…..
This episode really hit me in the feels. Served as a reminder how long we've been a part of that community in some way, and how much everyone involved over the years became part of our lives.
I just hope at some point I get to see Tally Ho. Living in the Chicago area, it's not super-convenient to just pop over to the coast, or, eventually, the UK.
Hi leo. Awesome video series and vessel you and the whole crew have created. It truly is a stellar documentary that reflects a way of life and traditions that were so important in north America and Europe. I grew up around wooden fishing boats and community on east coast canada helping grandfathers maintain there boats. For viewers, a bible that i would highly recommend covering all of the aspects of traditional large wooden boat building such as Tally Ho would be Robert Stewards " Boatbuilding Manual ". Bob worked with the greats in the sailing world like Phil Rhodes and in numerous other significant projects for 50 years in the 1900's. Together with Leo's videos they will be pretty much the complete story for anyone interested.
Thanks and farewell to Poncho.
God bless Raul and Darlene. Their generous support of Leo was in effect a foundation for the Tally Ho project to build on. Leo had a dream, skill, and energy. He needed a place, a base, to get the project rolling and they provided a great one.
Starting from there Leo and a team of many talented woodworkers, systems people, machinists, and foundry workers have built something very special. Ship shape in Bristol fashion!
Via Con Dios Darlene.
Perfect video to wrap up the end of the beginning. So appreciated.
Can't believe I've watched (and enjoyed) 214 videos about a wooden sailing boat.
😂 it's like interviews with witnesses to the crime!
Fantastic to have a catch-up with the folks. Thanks Leo.
Hey Leo - I'm a 70+ Brit who doesn't do man hugs but - Gee Whiz ( I'll allow myself an Americanism) - this video has even brought out emotion in me!
And don't get me wrong (I'm not noted for my political correctness or even basic nodding to social norms!) - I look at the crew who've worked on Tally Ho, I am my father's son and I know he would've said "Jesus wept look at this gang of misfits!" However; I'm also sooooo aware of the maxim that book covers aren't always that revealing. I've watched this channel since the earliest days and have been steadily more and more AMAZED - I've attempted good joinery, I helped my dad on boat building but we are made to look very workaday by you guys! Utterly amazing and gives me faith in the world - some things are worth doing.
What an excellent story-teller-documentarian you've turned into Leo. Revisiting your (OUR?) old friends and colleagues only reinforces how well you have been able to make us part of the close relationships you've made along the way. The support and work they did for you and Tally Ho make us want to say a proper farewell too. Great Job Leo.
I've just looked - there's not a single Tally Hon video I've missed...! Thanks to everyone for sharing themselves on camera for this project. Bon voyage!
I've been with you most of this project and have love it. Thanks for letting me watch and enjoy for the years of boat building.
Hey Leo, I came to your project late (no idea how this got past me) and am still bingeing on the construction videos. What you have created here online is nothing short of incredible. The people you gathered around you to work on the rebuild were of the highest calibre, true craftspeople who take pride in their work and and keeping historical skillsets alive. There were days I never thought those damn frames would be completed! But it all worked out for the best in the end. Am planning on starting my own nautical adventures at the end of 2025 so will keep an eye out for one of the most beautiful sail boats on the water anywhere in the world. Bon voyage!
Saying good bye is certainly not my favourite but life goes on. I really think you left a mark on the community that will be remembered for a long time. Each person that worked on Tally Ho grew in the process and your leadership on this project will be remembered by all.
I had been going thru cancer and Tally Ho and her humans lifted my spirits.
My heart goes out to Raul. It's clear the project brought so much joy to him and Darlene. I hope he knows nothing but joy and happiness going forward.
It’s wonderful to see so many folks who were involved in the project.
I thought Raeol’s words were very powerful - how pivotal he and Darlene were to the project. But also, as you both say, how the community and people working together in a team has really made the project happen. Inspiring, in many ways
I have finally watched this episode. I just couldn't bring myself to do so after feeing part of this family over the last 7 years. So many diverse people, skillsets and personalities that blended to make this a successful journey. Pushing the big 80 and looking forward to seeing Tally Ho and crew at the Fastnet Race and her journey getting back there.
I’m so glad you made this video. There’s been so many characters working on Tally Ho over the years that have become almost family and it’s great that you’ve been back to see some of them. Port Townsend seems to be a very special place and it’s great to see some of the projects that the team are working on. You’ve been an inspiration to many and certainly to me…I’ve now at long last built my own boat and am involved in the restoration of two local classic fishing boats….both a tad older than Tally Ho. Thank you for everything.
Again and again I want to say, your community has been forming our most favorite UA-cam channel for the past years ish. My family is watching your story that evolved around tally how all together since the 10th video you put on youtube. Thank you and greetings from Germany.
Thank you for sharing this journey with us! It has been nothing short of incredible to watch this all come together.
Thank you all for your wonderful work. A real escape from the madness of the world. We were lucky to be able to be in Port Townsend for your open day and it’s great to see Tally Ho doing what she was built for.
Thank you gentlemen for this extraordinary human adventure ❤
I've been watching since the beginning and I found it quite emotional to see all the old faces for a send off. Bravo to all, especially Leo for having the vision and gumption to turn a $1 boat into a priceless masterpiece. Fair winds for the next chapter and look forward to watching the seafaring phase of the project.
I have found out that adding comments helps with the algorithm. All hail the Mighty Algo. Let the comments begin:
Yes! Accordions! My favorite instrument & wrongly maligned here in the colonies (I blame weird Al). & let me say that your musical choices over the years of this channel have been impeccable.
It was great seeing everyone again. I did watch Pete's video on the fishing boat job. Very interesting comparing the work done on a working vessel to that of Tally Ho.
I cannot wait to see the videos that the future will bring & it doesn't seem that long now that she's in the water since you started. You have done an incredible job, thanks for bringing us along on the ride.
Lastly, I really enjoy seeing the views & 'likes' tally roll up as I sit & type this. It was at about 34k when I started the video & is now over 40K. I wish you great success in the coming years, & please know as long as you keep making videos, I will keep watching them (now over 41k). Have a great festive period & watch out for those cresting stern waves!
If you admit that you can play the accordion,
No one'll hire you in a rock 'n' roll band.
@ronm3245 I gave up rock in the 90s for jazz & international music. The accordion was quite popular in jazz before the advent of amplified music. Even Benny Goodman had one.
They are still appearing in some European jazz bands.
Even jazz aside, just listen to a tango by Astor Piazolla.
@@mcrumph Yes, the accordion sure is great. I was really just trying to help with the algorithm with my comment. It's a line from a song.
@ronm3245 what? There's a song about algorithms? Leo, please post the bands you used in this video.
Leo, love your interviews. You're so calm and polite but the LOVE shines right through.

I think thats the first time i have shed a tear in years seeing what a great soul raul is and has and how he made all this happen hats off to him ❤
Such a wonderful and bittersweet episode. What a bunch of beautiful people that made Tally Ho what she is now!
Did my heart good to see such great folks. What an honor to have all those good people leave fingerprints on my heart. All my best!! Merry Christmas
What a sweet ending to the boat-building. You will make many more friends during the sailing, but it is great the way you thanked everyone who made the sailing possible. Fair winds.
19:23 well, it’s about time we see our dude on this channel. I’m happy to see him here for another Leo send-off.
this was fitting & proper with Raul rounding it all out.
Leo was just a blip on Port Townshend’s existence, but he was able to show the world what kind of Pros (seasoned & green) that place breeds & creates. imo, Leo’s done more for the modern industry than it’s done for him. he’s shown possible professional careers to prepare for & inspired many to study or begin/resume projects…that’s priceless.
Fair Winds, Everyone. adieu, Leo
we look forward to the next upload, as always.
Thank you Leo for sharing this journey with us. It brought a lot of joy and emotional moments to my life too. I am happy I could contribute to the project through donations. You've built something much bigger than a wooden sailing yacht. I can't wait whats next...
Thanks for the heartwarming closure with all those special people. What a great community.
