@@emko333 this is because emulators like xemu emulates a monitor at 60hz aka 60fps. If it gets below full speed then it starts dipping. As you saw with ninja gaiden black it looked slower but fps said was 59 even tho it was definitely 30 fps.

I've had my steam deck for a month now. Its great to see original games running on this. I love my steam deck, and its great to run games like half life 2 or oblivion, and the original starwars battlefront 2 games that are not on switch. Oh and we can't forget halo MCC, running all the halo games on a handheld is amazing.
It's great as an option, but as far as being the main way to play, I've gotta say, I don't see the appeal. The Steam Deck is built to run full games on the go, but how the heck are you supposed to enjoy playing Halo when you're doing it on the run or during a break, where you have fifteen, maybe thirty minutes at most to play? It's enough time to load a stage, watch the intro, and get about a quarter of the way through before you have to put the thing away, and when you go back, you're smack in the middle of the level and there's no way in HIFL you can get back into the same 'zone' you were in when you had to set it down in the first place. If it's the only way to play Steam games, then fine, it makes sense. If you have a PC capable of running what you're running on the Deck, it does not make sense.
@@CoralCopperHead it makes perfect sence, if your away on vaccination or something, you wouldn't bring it to work unless you had a long break. I was on my deck, and he was on his pc. In situations like that, that's where the deck is handy, that and sometimes I'll play a game on my deck instead of my gaming pc, because its fun to do so.
@@CoralCopperHead @shard floofFox just gave you a few examples of why a Steam Deck makes sense and there are several more than that. There's a good little work around for running Xbox games at 1x resolution, just press the quick access button (•••) and enable FSR, sharpness at 3 is nice, and there you go, better image quality for Xemu emulation The Steam Deck is honestly a dream come true to me, & imo it's a true next generation innovation. Honestly gyroscope is just the best thing ever, it's perfect for games like Time Splitter and you can configure it to activate in different ways :D
@Modern Vintage Gamer 5:58 looking at ninja gaiden black, it seems slower than usual, although it is 60fps seems there's some compromises with slowdown, just to point that out, great video as usual :)
Yeah I thought it looked slower too. I’m wondering if it’s the same issue that Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks had and it’s actually running at half framerate.

The Xbox is probably my favorite console of all time, it has psychonauts, Blinx, the best version of Fatal Frame... It's incredible, hope the emulation improves tons more!
Plus, let's be honest, lots of deeper emulation videos mean more content that can be pushed out quicker. You can feed the algorithm, we get cool deep dives. Can't wait for my Steam Deck!
I''d like to point out that it is not "almost like a PC" in desktop mode. It IS like a PC. The only downside (if you wanna call it like that) are the immutable system files. Other than that you'll get the full KDE desktop experience.
The entire file system is not immutable. I'm not sure where you got that. You can completely do what you want other than your Var/root drives. If you want a GNOME DE, (not sure why KDE3 plasma is great) or maybe do some window tiling i3? You can do that. Biggest issue the deck has (For me at least with the 512gb nvme ssd version) is the lack of dock and hookups for peripherals (which will change with the dock or using an anker dock).
Perfect time for this thanks. The Steam Decks abilities are almost overwhelming so it's good to slowly learn about the different systems and how well they emulate.

I am glad everything seems to be alright and you've started to post videos again. Missed you, dude!
4:36 A man after my own heart, giving Otogi some good ol' airtime. I oughta float you the dev build I have--it incorporates a fix for the black texture issue and it's glorious.
The framerate via Steam's Power display setting isn't really the internal framerate of the game. For example, Ninja Gaiden showed in the video as 60 FPS, but the frame rate was obviously visually 30 FPS. It wasn't dropping frames but rather slowing down to half speed. It definitely wasn't "silky smooth gameplay". But thanks for the vid anyways. Its always good to see XEMU progress, and hopefully once the team receive their decks we should start seeing performance boosts I imagine.
It was only a matter of time, really. There were people salivating about the prospect of using the Steam Deck as a portable emulation box even before its release, so there's been a lot of drive and interest behind this project.
I ended up buying a new 512 version from someone on FB marketplace and the dude only wanted 750 for it. Its 100 more than msrp but i can live with that. Just gotta wait a bit and be patient for “good” prices
I got my 64gb Steam Deck about 3 weeks ago, put in a 1tb drive and played with Emulation first. Completely blown away on what it can do. I tried a few Switch games and I was playing Mario Kart 8 with no frame drops, not a single slow down... It's amazing. Any classic, flawless, WiiU, sure, good frame rates, no problem. I'll have to dump on some of my fav Xbox games on it... Looking forward to see what other higher end consoles you can do on it...
Same... I never had them growing up, but always thought they were cool. Ive been waiting for years for Otogi and Otogi 2 to be playable on something other than OG hardware, and we are SO CLOSE. Maybe Blood wake + Crimson Skies as well, but otherwise I am good.

Burnout 3 had some unusual behavior, the loading screen would come up, but after it finished, the screen would go black and you would only hear audio. This doesn't seem to be a problem for windows which runs the game really well
Great video! I just got my Steam Deck on Thursday and have spent the past few days tinkering with all sorts of things. When it came time to set up xemu, I decided to pass as there weren't many games I wanted to play and it was a bit more complicated than some other emulators. This has confirmed my decision, but I would love an update video in a few months if some of the games mentioned get these issues worked out! Thanks for the timely advice!
I was FINALLY able to order my Deck late Friday night. Now to drive myself crazy checking on shipping status until it arrives lol. Really wanna try this with mine. I got the 512 model but I'll probably load most emulation things on an SD card Saw half life 2 in the library you were scrolling through... I'd say it would be an appropriate title to try out lol
I love this thing, its quickly replacing every console at home, really happy to have been one of the q2 preorders, Valve really outdid theirselves with this one
It's great to see Ninja Gaiden Black running on this, if a little slow despite being 60fps. The time between the attacks in a combo is noticeably slower than on original hardware.
OG Xbox is certainly on the top of my list of Steam Deck emulation curiosity. Dreamcast is easily emulated on many cheaper systems so im not curious at all. And id wager switch runs very well. Many OG xbox games im interested in you showcased here. Timesplitters, Jet Set Radio Future, Halo, THPS etc etc It's funny because Jet Set Radio Future has known emulation problems across the board from one emulator to another. Even trying to run it backwards compatible on later xboxs has various issues. With most games luckily, there's work arounds. Like you mentioned, playing the original Conkers Bad Fur Day which id choose over the remaster any day, and Outrun 2 has an arguably better version on the PSP which I'd bet the Steam Deck can emulate upscaled without breaking a sweat.
@@marcelosoares7148 That's right! I remember hearing about that. There's also Timesplitters Rewind, the fan project that's long anticipated. Definitely worth checking out
Great video as always MVG! Really enjoy your videos. One thing I'd like to see in the future is if you can add chapters to the videos, that would be a nice touch.
Same as with Mortal Kombat playing at 60fps but gameplay logic and animations being at half speed (slow-mo style), I think Ninja Gaiden behaved in the same way. If the footage you showed wasn't slowed down in the edit, that looks far too slow for Ninja Gaiden too. I think that might be at half rate too, despite the 60fps.
6:00 looking at the ninja gaiden gameplay it definitely looks slowed down, I know its reporting 60fps but no way thats full speed. But its cool thats running that well at all
I’m happy we’re finally at a point where Xbox emulation is actually worth setting up. As far as original Halo slowing down with particle effects, the master chief collection should run fine on the steam deck and it’s unlocked frame rate.
Came here to post a similar sentiment about Halo CE Anniversary. Also, Ninja Gaiden master collection is deck verified so unless you really prefer Black to Sigma, it’s another title you can just run natively without worrying about emulation.
Awsome content as always! I was wondering if you were running these games off of the internal NVMe or the SD expansion slot? I doubt there would be a change in perfomance due to orignally running at DVD speeds?
Awesome to finally see someone else trying OG Xbox Emulation on the Steam Deck. If you need excellent performing 360 titles for the Deck, check out my Xbox 360 playlist. Looking forward to the next one!
The timing is so funny, just started delving into Xbox emulation via Xemu as of last night! So impressed how well they work on average =D Messing around with Pariah and it's mostly playable (some of the larger sections drop to 5 frames sporadically), it being smart enough to pickup your controller was also a really cool feature!
Running CXBX-reloaded on linux is quite a surreal thing internally, because both CXBX and wine are API translators so you get a chain of Xbox api->Windows-api->Linux-api translation. but it works, and quite well somehow
Other people have pointed this out, but it probably boils down to how your video capture works, or even just how the Steam Deck's screen works, but none of the 60 FPS games actually look like they're running at 60 FPS; they look much more like 30 FPS games. Still, eyeballing it over a UA-cam stream (even set to 2160p60) isn't reliable I suppose. Thank you for the investigation; it's interesting to see how this compares to DF's look at the Xbox Series S hardware compared to the Steam Deck (and as with that, it's what you'd expect--the Series S has substantially more horsepower, and is cheaper, but then again it's a small console, it's not portable, has no batteries or screen, etc.). Microsoft obviously has an advantage of having the best original Xbox emulation in town (even if it only covers less than a hundred games in the library).
Yeah, it appears the emulator runs the games in a 60fps container, but the games are not actually rendering at that frame rate. He specifically said Halo was running at 60fps, but I know for certain it is a 30fps game.
JSRF has a really annoying audio crackling bug on Xemu that makes the game unenjoyable for me. So I've been experimenting around with getting Cxbx Reloaded working well under Wine so I can play it on my Steam Deck. The hardest part so far has been figuring out which build to use, as there have been several regressions in the last few years leading to annoying bugs, but newer builds generally still run better. I'm making progress though and learning a lot in the process.
I'm kinda confused at your claim of some games that normally have a 30fps lock running at 60fps or reaching 60fps... does Xemu just unlock the framerate? and wouldn't that introduce issues? i know that the Emulator readout says 60fps when you show Halo, but I would assume that this 60fps readout means that it runs at full speed, so 60hz, but not necessarily 60fps
yeah this is a little misleading and I apologize. internally the emulation is running at 60, but obviously the games themselves may be capped at 30 (such as Halo). The point here is that with the emulating running at 60 it should be faithful to the way it was intended for original hardware
Loving my Steam Deck. I have been spending a load of time actually on the Playstation emulator, runs flawless and so much fun. Plus the obvious running the PC games it was intended for is a great experience as well. Will have to give Xbox a try soon.
Both Jet Set Radios seem like they'd be such fun on a handheld 😍 Personally I'm waiting patiently for Fatal Frame II (Xbox-only director's cut - the best version of one of the best horror games ever made). Wanna play it in bed and give myself nightmares! It's always been behind the pack in xbox emulation, but if it happens it'll be worth the wait.
Ive had this for a month now. Running Odins sphere (Ps3) at 60fps. Gonna try yokyo jungle next. Mario and bowsers fury (switch) runs at 60fps. Its a powerful handheld for the time its been released in. Also tip: check protondb. Just cause valve says a game isnt supported doesnt mean it cant run. Ys 7 has a big "NO" compatibility rating but im playing it on my deck with no issues.
Great vid, sold my Steamdeck a few weeks ago, I realise I have very little time and if I do then I'll play on my gaming PC. Amazing bit of kit though, definitely a gen 1 product but very capable non the less.
Perhaps it was a poor choice of footage, but that Ninja Gaiden gameplay definitely was not running at full speed. I've been playing it on Series S recently and the game plays MUCH faster than what was shown in the Xemu footage here
thank you sir for your experience and dedication to the scene. i'm trying to emulate the o.g xbox experience, mostly for nostalgia with my son, and you are my go to source for facts
I would love to know how Wreckless runs on the Steam deck. Ninja Gaiden also looked like it was running underwater. You mentioned HL2 on the xbox, but wouldn't it run better all around on the PC version?
I would love to get a Steam Deck, if they were actually available! You have a better chance of seeing a friggin Unicorn than getting a Steam Deck for retail in the next 6-9 months…
I thought so too but slowly but surely curiosity takes over you. You'll start tinkering with one emulator, maybe throw a game or two on it. Eventually you'll be going balls to the wall trying to set up EVERYTHING. I've had mine for 4 days and all I need to set up is Xemu and Wii U lol.
I've been LOVING Xemu on Steam Deck. biggest thing is you need XMulleter to convert your ISOs into xiso. From what I've tested: X-Men Legends, TimeSplitters 2, Medal of Honor: Frontline and Ghost Recon 2 have been really well performant. MVG I would love you to cover the EmuDeck set up because so far it's been a great tool for front-end tile management/Steam Mod Manager. I've really found that Yuzu, RPCS3 have been the biggest issues, along with recognizing CHDs for mame (but its not a huge set up to fix this) on the Steam Deck.
@@SRC267 They typically are between 4-7gb. For the DVD9 disc images I do not think they can be compressed much further. As for transferring them, with any usb-c or a thumb drive you should convert them to exFAT file system so you can bypass the 4GB transfer limit.

Yeah the framecount definitely seems off in some instances. The Halo footage was clearly not running at 60fps at all, dropping into the 20s too. My guess is that the measurement is trying to say 60fps=full speed? Even then some of the games look like they're running slower than usual and it's still reporting "full speed".
@@emko333 this is because emulators like xemu emulates a monitor at 60hz aka 60fps. If it gets below full speed then it starts dipping. As you saw with ninja gaiden black it looked slower but fps said was 59 even tho it was definitely 30 fps.
@@VexAcer halo ce is also a 30fps game so it’s definitely inaccurate. Debug>video has accurate fps and mspf readings as it’s directly from the emulation.
@@speedracer123222 okay but the emulator is still outputting that mangohud is displaying... its not possible for it to be inaccurate as it hooks right into what generates the frames.... now its possible the emulator is rendering frames but internally its not updating those frames at that rate.
Xbox cloud Streaming
It's ment for a long car journey or something like that, I was playing MCC recently on my deck, as I was stopping at my boyfriends for the night. And we had a great time.
I'm always baffled why people like you can't seem to imagine any scenarios where "x-product" is useful outside of your own situation. I would hate to think how many things wouldn't have been invented because someone like you said, "this doesn't make sense".
There's a good little work around for running Xbox games at 1x resolution, just press the quick access button (•••) and enable FSR, sharpness at 3 is nice, and there you go, better image quality for Xemu emulation
The Steam Deck is honestly a dream come true to me, & imo it's a true next generation innovation. It's a portable everything, I've been able to play OG Demon Souls, to Halo 2, to Ocarina of Time 3D with gyroscopic functionality.
Ignore the comment from the MVG scammer.
Yeah, I just finished the first of the three ninja gaiden in pc and immediately noticed that it's running slower than normal in the video.
You literally can't reply to the telegram scammer. I was going to troll them, but replies with the @ symbol contain the offending words that trigger the spam bot, so no telegraph jokes.
I was going to reply with: I'm not that Vintage of a gamer. I don't have a telegraph machine. Is there an app I can use instead to claim my prize?

Plus, let's be honest, lots of deeper emulation videos mean more content that can be pushed out quicker. You can feed the algorithm, we get cool deep dives. Can't wait for my Steam Deck!
I''d like to point out that it is not "almost like a PC" in desktop mode. It IS like a PC. The only downside (if you wanna call it like that) are the immutable system files. Other than that you'll get the full KDE desktop experience.
That would of only been a bad thing if it was Gnome
The entire file system isn't immutable, only the system files.
@@slippynipz You can't change the DE without disabling ROFS though.
If it was possible that would be great, I really dislike KDE

Perfect time for this thanks. The Steam Decks abilities are almost overwhelming so it's good to slowly learn about the different systems and how well they emulate.
I am glad everything seems to be alright and you've started to post videos again. Missed you, dude!
Time splitters, jet set radio future, og bond games, and path of neo are some of my most wanted games to emulate

4:36 A man after my own heart, giving Otogi some good ol' airtime. I oughta float you the dev build I have--it incorporates a fix for the black texture issue and it's glorious.
Any chance I could get a copy if ur willing

Avast me hearties, yo-ho!
It's a real shame that both Otogi games are still broken on xemu, because those are really the only two games I care about replaying from that era...
Same... I never had them growing up, but always thought they were cool. Ive been waiting for years for Otogi and Otogi 2 to be playable on something other than OG hardware, and we are SO CLOSE. Maybe Blood wake + Crimson Skies as well, but otherwise I am good.
They’re both bc on the Xbox one/series x
And they run and look great
Super excited to see you try out some more emulators on the Steam Deck. Got mine a few months ago and haven't tried any sort of emulation yet!
installing xemu on my steam deck was one of the first things that I did and while the boost issue in JSRF is annoying I can play around it. I love this thing for emulation so much
There's a PC port, I have it on steam
Ah, a fresh MVG video on a Monday.
This is gonna be a good week
Hey MVG, did you hear we can RAM upgrade v1.6 OG Xboxes now by stacking the RAM chips on top of the existing ones?
I was expecting you to make a video on this exciting development.
Man... this def makes me want to get one. I've been wanting a handheld Xbox for years... the best we can get is mobile gamecube emulation but this.... this is reason enough for me to want the sD
Burnout 3 had some unusual behavior, the loading screen would come up, but after it finished, the screen would go black and you would only hear audio. This doesn't seem to be a problem for windows which runs the game really well
Try it in pcsx2, the performance is perfect and the graphics a bit better

Great video! I just got my Steam Deck on Thursday and have spent the past few days tinkering with all sorts of things. When it came time to set up xemu, I decided to pass as there weren't many games I wanted to play and it was a bit more complicated than some other emulators. This has confirmed my decision, but I would love an update video in a few months if some of the games mentioned get these issues worked out! Thanks for the timely advice!
plus a lot of larger Xbox titles have PC ports.
Yup. That's what I got the Master Chief collection for!
I really want to play the Xbox version of Splinter Cell Double Agent, but I ended up settling for the PS2 version since this seems complicated.
Yooo now this is definitely a deep dive that I've needed in my life 😍 Big up MVG for great pieces of work
I was FINALLY able to order my Deck late Friday night. Now to drive myself crazy checking on shipping status until it arrives lol.
Really wanna try this with mine. I got the 512 model but I'll probably load most emulation things on an SD card
Saw half life 2 in the library you were scrolling through... I'd say it would be an appropriate title to try out lol
Half life 2 is probably best playing the steam version it has platinum on protondb and had a native port.
@@SupermotoZach well of course, I meant in relation to running an Xbox emulator
TimeSplitters 2 has a native PC port inside another game (Homefront The Revolution i think) if you want to check it out
@@marcelosoares7148 That's right! I remember hearing about that. There's also Timesplitters Rewind, the fan project that's long anticipated. Definitely worth checking out
Great video as usual. Loving my steam deck and the OG Xbox is my favorite console of all time. I have been waiting for this for a long time.
I remembered how excited I was learning about redump to run games on Xemu, that tool was just magic
Mangohud doesn’t read the fps of the games so halo was only 30fps or lower the fps you where seeing was gamescope only
Great video as always MVG!
I love your videos man, they have a good story/pacing to them while bring informative and fun to watch!
You had me the second I saw Otogi!! From Software did an amazing job on these two.

Still waiting on my steamdeck and videos like this make me super excited.
Also, Ninja Gaiden master collection is deck verified so unless you really prefer Black to Sigma, it’s another title you can just run natively without worrying about emulation.
nice video, thanks for inserting the footage of (the best rally game ever created) RalliSport Challenge 2!
I like how the MCC is listed as unsupported on deck because of EAC. But actually runs great in my experience.
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is unsupported and it runs beautifully
Awsome content as always! I was wondering if you were running these games off of the internal NVMe or the SD expansion slot? I doubt there would be a change in perfomance due to orignally running at DVD speeds?
It boggles my mind how a PC can Run switch and some PS3 games @4K60 but struggles to emulate a PIII console.
Awesome to finally see someone else trying OG Xbox Emulation on the Steam Deck.

Nice! I will say that if you want to play Outrun 2006, the pc version runs REALLY well on the steam deck via Proton.
VERY GLAD YOU TRIED RALLISPORT CHALLENGE 2! THANKS
The timing is so funny, just started delving into Xbox emulation via Xemu as of last night!
So impressed how well they work on average =D
Messing around with Pariah and it's mostly playable (some of the larger sections drop to 5 frames sporadically), it being smart enough to pickup your controller was also a really cool feature!
0:40 i could hear the startup without actually hearing it in the video .. man i miss the era so much
Glad you'll be doing separate emulator videos for the steam deck, can't wait til we can get them in Australia
Ninja Gaiden Black looked like it was alright, but when I tried it out it had massive frame drops
In PCSX2 they'll take games that run at 30fps and double each frame so it's 60fps. Confusing, I know. Something similar could be happening here.
I wish more people tested locked 40-50 fps when 60 was not completely stable. Plenty of people prefer stable frametimes over high unstable fps.
Loving my Steam Deck. I have been spending a load of time actually on the Playstation emulator, runs flawless and so much fun. Plus the obvious running the PC games it was intended for is a great experience as well. Will have to give Xbox a try soon.

Personally I'm waiting patiently for Fatal Frame II (Xbox-only director's cut - the best version of one of the best horror games ever made). Wanna play it in bed and give myself nightmares! It's always been behind the pack in xbox emulation, but if it happens it'll be worth the wait.

Halo definetly wasnt 60fps in the Video...

We're just lucky many of these games finally got PC ports. Especially something like Kingdom Under Fire
How do you get your xiso files down to a good size? All mine seem to be the same file sizes
@@SRC267 They typically are between 4-7gb. For the DVD9 disc images I do not think they can be compressed much further. As for transferring them, with any usb-c or a thumb drive you should convert them to exFAT file system so you can bypass the 4GB transfer limit.
