Far more relevant than I ever imagined. Idiocracy is another movie, came out a year after V, and it's proving to be prophetic as well. I didn't believe the world could ever become so stupid. But I suppose it already was, and it's just becoming more obvious over time with the proliferation of social media.
So an element I wish they kept, V was grooming Evey to be his successor. In the comic, when he died, he left Evey with a riddle; you must know the face beneath this mask, but you must never remove it from me. Meanwhile, the head inspector was telling everyone that V was shot to death. Cut to Evey dressed as V shouting to the crowd from a rooftop after parliament blows, quoting Mark Twain; "rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated!" To V's thinking, Anarchy has 2 sides, a destroyer who reduces the totalitarian government to rubble and chaos, and a builder, who uses that cleared space to build a new age of self governance. He was the destroyer, and he left it to Evey to build anew.

You mention about finding out which other movies John Hurt (the Chancellor) had been in, Spaceballs and Alien amongst them.. but the really relevant one is 1984, which is set in a similar dystopia. The key difference is he's the one being massively oppressed and controlled, rather than in charge of it all. Worth a watch, especially after seeing this :)

5th November is a real holiday in England called bonfire night where we have bonfires and set fireworks off its also known as guy fawkes night where we celebrate his failed attempt to blow parliament up in the 1600s we also light a scarecrow that is made to look like him on fire
Prior to watching this, I had heard of Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night, but I didn't know really know anything about either and I didn't l know they were connected.
A detail I don't see mentioned is the white chalk cross Cready is told to put on his front door. As the camera pans over the test subject doors to V's room, the doors of the dead are marked with a white chalk cross. By giving the instruction to Cready V is getting him to mark himself as a dead man. Subtle, symbolic and deliciously petty.
I didn't make the connection about the chalk X being on the subjects' door while I was watching it, but I did notice them while I was editing this video. But, I didn't really think about it from the perspective you mentioned. That's awesome. lol
I think this movie is the greatest testament to Hugo Weaving's monstrous skill. What he did without his face (technically his work instrument) is something only the great masters of the craft are able to.

What i love about Gordon's character is how oblivious he was to how much danger he was in. It's shows us just how good the cover up is. Even in the beginning those who witnessed the blowing up of the old bailey were detained
The Book is a modern classic. Alan Moore's hero triptych (V for Vendetta, Watchmen, and Marvelman/Miracleman) are lessons for our age as poignant and relevant today as they were when they were written in the 80s.

I don't think it would've been platonic. He admitted to falling in love with her and she kissed his mask and made it pretty clear she loved him as well.
I agree. But let me put it another way, the fire removed anything to consummate the relationship. He was a sort of super hero in that he had super human strength and will. He had the ability to see without eyes. but he was all scar tissue. Would Evey had loved him anyway? Maybe but he asked her to please not remove the mask. @@BritanyBinges

The last domino represents Eavey the only person he hadn't planned for the one he groomed as his successor. V had come to realise he was as corrupted by hate as the people in power so couldn't be trusted to make the final decision on tearing down the system he needed Eavey to be the one making the decision as she still had hope and compassion.
@@BritanyBinges In particular it's a domino with different coloured faces. The plan he sets up could have knocked it one way or the other, but it remained standing. He does not get to decide whether it falls on the red or black side. It's for Evey to decide which way that domino falls.

Hugo Weaving was excellent as V. There wasn't one bad actor throughout, even the cheesiest parts were played to the max. But Portman's portrayal of Evey was an absolute masterclass & she carried it over the line - utterly believable from naive fledgling to terrified prisoner to fearlessly decisive maturity. Evey's character is up there with other female roles like Ripley from Alien - being a woman or showing emotion doesn't mean there's no strength to get the job done. Like Sin City, it thankfully never shirks away from its comic book roots in look, action or dialogue. Special nod to Stephen Rhea as the Inspector he's such an underappreciated actor. (I know some of the original writers didn't approve of the changes, but IMO, the comic was politically relevant for it's time & the movie was relevant for ITS time).
The whole core of this film is in V's one line-"You have no fear any more. You're completely free." And the most breathtaking image is at the end, while the Houses of Parliament are blowing up, and the figures in the crowd pull off their masks, revealing the faces of all the people who have died at the hands of this regime.

Fun fact: Then scene immediately after Evey finds out it was V who tortured her and she breaks down with him talking to her was the first scene Hugo and Natalie filmed together
A few tidbits: 1. The most important distinctions from the graphic novel are that A. V is explicitly an anarchist and B. All of the government systems were wired into a supercomputer which V had hacked, explaining why he could run circles around a paranoid police state. 2. The graphic novel was written in the context of the Margaret Thatcher era, thus the references to discrimination against gay people. 3. The dead characters appearing at the end are meant to be symbolic.
I didn't really get this movie when it came out. Almost 20 years later and now I respect it. It is scary to see certain parts of it reflected in today's real life, but it also gives hope that those times will never last. 😊 If you're looking for inspiration, I highly recommend The Lord Of The Rings. It also features Hugo Weaving (V) and I'd go as far as to say that that trilogy is my favourite of all time.

The film is adapted from a comic that was started in 1982, then the original comic folded (pun intended) in 1985 and it was republished and completed in 1988/89 by DC Comics. For all that it resonates now it was intended as a critique of Britain at the time. The film was released in 2005 and here we are, another (almost) 20 years later. I definitely agree, although I know it's not a popular opinion among fans. Liberty vs. Fascism resonates, especially in the last 20 years or so. The graphic novel's dichotomy of Anarchy vs. Fascism for me does not. In addition, the GN is really an artifact of its time of Thatcher's England, while the film is more timeless, as a culture and nation being taken over by fascists/authoritarians/totalitarians can happen in any era.
@@stevensauer8539 Oddly though, fascism is actually a left wing ideology but history got rewritten (again) The word fascism is derived from the Italian fascio which was used figuratively by late 20th century Italian socialists who became known as "the fasci" Mussolini was an ardent socialist much like his Father and formed their local socialist branch. Mussolini was arrested for rioting on left wing marches and wrote for hard left socialist newspapers in Spain before joining the Italian socialist party. Another rewrite of history is that Mussolini was kicked out of the party because his views were more right wing when in fact it was because he demanded Italy declare war on Germany in support of socialist France in WWI. Only in later decades has Mussolini been called "right wing" on the basis he took money from Western financiers in his later years to remain in power. It is much the same with Hitler who always referred to himself as a socialist. In interviews he was asked why he hated the Communists to which he replied the true nature and pure form of socialism was nationalistic and Communism was a bogus form of socialism. Hitler based his governance on earlier Scandinavian Socialism which he outwardly admired. The point is that right win and left wing are just labels, they are there to give the illusion of choice when all that really matters is truth and justice.
@@Muckylittleme fascism is a marriage of state and capitalism under far right ideology, liberalism. It is a compromise to protect profits at all costs. The Wachowskis based the movie on the Alan Moore graphic novel but they also borrowed heavily from George Orwell's novel 1984 that was the inspiration for the graphic novel. The graphic novel is more nihilistic promoting the chaos of V while the book is darker with a central character caught in this dark world but with very little power to change it. I highly recommend both. The 1984 movie adaptation of the book "1984" isn't great but it's worth watching if you don't want to read the book. Extremely prophetic in a mirror image sort of way.
Cut to Evey dressed as V shouting to the crowd from a rooftop after parliament blows, quoting Mark Twain; "rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated!"
To V's thinking, Anarchy has 2 sides, a destroyer who reduces the totalitarian government to rubble and chaos, and a builder, who uses that cleared space to build a new age of self governance. He was the destroyer, and he left it to Evey to build anew.
This is such a relevant film these days.
“This world will end tonight, and tomorrow a different world will begin that different people will shape and this choice belongs to them.”
Love that line and the music.
Even after watching this a thousand times.. V still gives me chills.
Well, I haven't seen it a thousand times, but I have probably seen it about five or six times, and I completely agree.
@@BritanyBinges thanks for the response.. I'm used to bots and fake people. I used to be a graff writer.. Number one in my city. Idk why I said that.. Maybe it has 6o do with freedom fighting.

I completely agree! I'm so surprised I haven't heard more about it over the years.
Thank YOU for watching the reaction. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I raec this in the comic when it came out in 1982. I was 12, and the comic is way better and much more intense than this film (though they did a good job). Way back then it blew my tiny little mind. God bless you Alan Moore@@BritanyBinges
Gordon is our very own national treasure, Stephen Fry.
As far as I recall, this and Bones are the only things I've ever seen him in. (And I find it so funny that his name is Gordon in both of them.) I've really enjoyed his characters in both, though.
@@BritanyBinges he is or at least was, the host of a TV panel show called QI and played as Melchitt in Blackadder. He gets wheeled out from time to time and blows everyone away with how clever he is. He also has a brain condition that makes him unable to recognise faces. Great guy really.
@@Metzwerg74 a bit of fry and Laurie yes. Hugh also plated multiple roles in Blackadder too.
They've pretty much all been hanging out together since meeting at Cambridge where they ended up doing theatre type stuff together. Fawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Ben Elton, Rowan Atkinson, ade edmonton, rik mayall... they are all practically family and a couple of them have married.

I have seen this movie about 20 times by now and i cry every time still. Natalie and Hugo did such an amazing job. Every scene they have together is just perfection and every word Hugo delivers on his own moves me. My two top favorite movies ever is this and the movie Constantine. With this one edging out the lead because of the performances and music.
Yeah, I could watch an entire movie with nothing but the two of them in a room having a conversation. lol They were both absolutely incredible and captivating.
Poor Natalie having her hair shaved on camera. Her reaction breaks me.
This movie hits so hard, and I love that you felt the emotion. Hugo is a master & he managed to evoke so much feeling with just his voice & body language. ❤
Don't worry about the music in the Parliament scene- we're all singing along anyway!
no matter what you expect from the movie, you get so much more.
Well, I went in with absolutely zero expectations so, imagine my surprise. lol
_“Everybody is special. Everybody. Everybody is a hero, a lover, a fool, a villain. Everybody. Everybody has their story to tell.”_
_“Knowledge, like air, is vital to life. Like air, no one should be denied it.”_
The fact John Hurt was chosen to play the leader or big brother when he played the good guy every man in 1984.
Hazel in watershipdown.
Has kind of the same themes.
Also played Quentin Crisp exact opposite character.
@johnpoile1451 the war dr in dr who. The elephant man. Also Hazel in watership down. Kind of similar to this.
I highly recommend the graphic novel by Alan Moore, it's even better! thanks for this x
I've actually never read a graphic novel. This might a good one to start with since I already know I love the characters and story. :)
That's awesome. lol
you are the only reactor i have seen, that left the important "the only verdict is vengance, a vendetta, hold as a verdict, not in vain" in :)
In truth, we do see V's face.
In every face, and in the mirror.
I think this movie is the greatest testament to Hugo Weaving's monstrous skill. What he did without his face (technically his work instrument) is something only the great masters of the craft are able to.
I've watched this movie hundreds of times, and for some reason your reaction made me tear up during V's death 😂
It always confuses me that Americans don’t know what Nov 5th is. Then I realise it must be how they feel that no one but them cares about July 4th or whenever Thanksgiving is lol
Here's a little something I picked up a few years ago: Evey's name. E-V - the 5th and 5th from last letters of the alphabet.
And to make it even more wonderful, the Latin prefix e- means "out of/from/without". She is e-V - she comes from V and is without V.
Today, one can't help but draw similarities between the Chancellor Sutcliffe character and Donald Trump..!
And this is 19 years old!
I forgot how much I love this movie. It's so unique, and just as relevant, if not more so, than it was in the early aughts.
52:17 John Hurt was in Spaceballs at the end, recreating the scene from Alien when the alien popped out of his chest, hence why the character said "Oh no, not again".
Yeah, I knew him from that when I watched this. I just didn't know at the time who he was or what else he had been in so that's why I made the note in the video about him.
We don't need to see his face. He has my face, your face, he is all of us.
We are anonymous we are legion united as one divided by zero
Funny people often say “ people that don’t study the post are doomed to repeat the post” yet here we are in 2024. With a Labour government in the Uk that it’s taking lessons from the government in this movie, and think there are absolutely right in their actions. 🤷🏻♂️🇬🇧🏴🙏🏻
One of my all time favourite movie’s brilliant i try to watch it every November
It's not over, in fact it really has yet to begin.
What i love about Gordon's character is how oblivious he was to how much danger he was in. It's shows us just how good the cover up is. Even in the beginning those who witnessed the blowing up of the old bailey were detained
His carefree attitude during that scene is part of why I had such anxiety in that moment. lol
The Book is a modern classic. Alan Moore's hero triptych (V for Vendetta, Watchmen, and Marvelman/Miracleman) are lessons for our age as poignant and relevant today as they were when they were written in the 80s.
This film gets more relevant with every passing day. People in this country need Vs speech more than ever. "How did this happen? Who is to blame? There are of course those who are more responsible than others, and they shall be held accountable, but again truth be told. If you are looking for the guilty, you need only to look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. "
You saw his face in the fire scene. As the Dr. Said there were no eyes but he could see, and any relationship With Evey would be platonic. The features were all burned off.
43:03, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony... the first four notes of which are Morse Code for the letter V...

The association between the notes and "V for Victory" was popularized by Winston Churchill, the greatest wartime Prime Minister the UK ever had.
All the different voices when Evie was in the cell were still the same actor Hugo Weaving. He's an amazing voice actor though so they sound like different people.
You found something that mattered more to you than life because when they had threaten to kill you unless you gave them what they wanted. you told them you'd rather die 🖤 powerful 🖤
Oh, interesting! I just assumed it was supposed to represent V, but it actually does make more sense if it's supposed to be Evey. Thanks for sharing!
@@BritanyBinges In particular it's a domino with different coloured faces. The plan he sets up could have knocked it one way or the other, but it remained standing. He does not get to decide whether it falls on the red or black side. It's for Evey to decide which way that domino falls.
You're the first person I've ever seen or been with who has gotten weepy at this film and I love it. It hit you in a way that is so often lost or is lighter than in others. Loved your connecting and feelings taken from scenes, was just wonderful to see.
To the point of the direction of the film and real-life connections.... indeed, when it came out it struck on things I've (and so, so many in decades) seen continue progressing in my life. Enough said there.
But returning to your reaction itself, was happy to have found it randomly (I wasn't even looking for reactions to the movie... I like reactions so that is in the algorithm but I'd been searching things totallllllllly unrelated. Your video was one of those weird mix-ins that UA-cam does with a bundle of unconnected results. Am glad. Was so enjoyable to see how much you noticed and how you took it in. :)
This movie has so many prophetic undertones of what is actually going on in our own country right now.
It is amazing watching you put all the pieces together.
It's like setting up dominos to reveal a new picture to see.

Great reaction. This film is so good!
Thank you for watching! So glad you enjoyed it! :)
It's a dystopian version of Britain where it's a dictatorship and V is Guy Fawkes perfect combination.
I saw this in an Australian premiere theatre with reclining comfy chairs, food & drinks to order.
I watched this with a couple of beers and pizza.
By the end I could swear that they had different versions of the mask with subtly different expressions.
The e motions Hugo imparted to the mas were so amazing.
Top ten movie of all time for me.

Every one should see this movie. It will always be relevant & it strangely fits our current time. So much that it is spooky.
I completely agree!
The whole core of this film is in V's one line-"You have no fear any more. You're completely free."
And the most breathtaking image is at the end, while the Houses of Parliament are blowing up, and the figures in the crowd pull off their masks, revealing the faces of all the people who have died at the hands of this regime.
i dont know why, but i cant help but find the priest funny every time i watch this lol hes just so funny. the face of the actor and the acting, idk hes just funny lol i laugh every single time.
I randomly decided to watch this during the 2 week lockdown in 2020 because I hadn’t seen it since 2008. My stomach was in knots, it was wayyyy too close to home at that time. Love this movie.
Oh, yeah... watching it during a lockdown makes it a little too real. 😬
Fun fact: Then scene immediately after Evey finds out it was V who tortured her and she breaks down with him talking to her was the first scene Hugo and Natalie filmed together
That such an intense scene to have to start with, but they absolutely pulled it off.
John Hurt WAS in Spaceballs - reprising his role from Alien... (Not Again!)
I grew up watching Spaceballs, but I didn't see Alien until watching this so I didn't make the connection until I was editing this.
Woo! One of my favorite movies of all time!
I can see why it's one of your favorites. :)
One of my favourite films of all time and still so relevant in today's world....
John Hurt was is Spaceballs, replaying his chestbuster-scene from Alien.
If you're looking for inspiration, I highly recommend The Lord Of The Rings. It also features Hugo Weaving (V) and I'd go as far as to say that that trilogy is my favourite of all time.
I have seen the LOTR trilogy and, honestly, I wasn't that into them. My husband loves them so I agreed to watch them if he agreed to give Harry Potter a try. lol I thought they were some of the most visually stunning movies I had watched, but once was enough for me. :(
I don’t think anyone who seen this prior to internet recommendations ever thought about rewatching it on Nov. 5th.
Hugo Weaving is one of the great actors of our time.
I definitely underestimated him until I saw this.
I'm not sure you'd get in trouble with youtube for some of the music.
Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture doesn't have copyright I'm pretty sure.
I've responded to someone else regarding this, but it's not a quick/easy response so I'm just copy/pasting what I replied to them with:
"It's not the song itself. It's using a long clip of audio from a movie that is the problem. Copyright owners submit their works to UA-cam so it can be used as reference specifically for copyright violation checks. If too much of my video matches up with too much of their video (aka, the movie or episode I'm reacting to), it gets hit with a copyright claim and the video can be demonetized or outright blocked. So, it's not the song that's the problem, it's the movie.
The copyright checking system (aka the Content ID system) is an automated bot, so it frequently gets things wrong or is far more strict than it needs to be. Creators can appeal the copyright claims issued by the automated system and have a real person review it, but that process can take up 30 days.
Also, UA-cam regularly demonetizes videos for using music creators selected from UA-cam's very own "copyright safe" music library. So, they literally penalize creators for putting music in their videos that UA-cam specifically told them they could use in the first place.
I've also had a copyright claim on a video that was just of me talking. No music, no reaction. Literally just a video of me sitting in my office talking straight to camera the entire time.
It's a very flawed automated system.
So, dealing with the copyright on things is definitely not as straightforward as it might seem."
@@BritanyBinges Ah! That figures.
The comic is well worth your time (the story is different in many details) and is available in a collected edition.
I've never read a graphic novel/comic series, but this is definitely one I would consider.
@@BritanyBinges It's one of the important ones, but less famous than many others. The writer (Alan Moore) is hugely influential. 'Watchmen' is his best known work. It's Hugo Weaving beneath V's mask. That's Agent Smith from the Matrix, The Red Skull in Captain America, and Elrond in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, to name a few. Bonfire Night, celebrated in the U.K. every year on the 5th of November to mark an attempt to blow up Parliament by burning effigies of Guy Fawkes, the man who became the embodiment of that particular act of sedition and rebellion, is a proud tradition. We have a special toffee and everything
I mainly knew Hugo Weaving from The Matrix at the time I watched this (I had technically seen LOTR, but only once and don't really remember much of it). He really creeped me out in the Matrix so I was shocked when I learned after releasing the reaction on Patreon that he was V.
I had heard of Bonfire night and Guy Fawkes prior to watching this, but I didn't really know anything about either and I didn't realize they were connected.
V (Hugo Weaving) played the commander of Hydra in Captain America's movie (the first avenger)!
Thank you. One of my all time favourite movies. Fantastic caste, story and they really knocked it out of the park. This movie works at so many levels, and remains so intensely relevant today! Only personal grip is them changing the UK pronunciation of "lever" at the end to suit a US audience. Grrrr.
I honestly feel like it might more relevant today than it was when the graphic novel came out. :-/
I found out recently that the scene at 36:35 was the first that Natalie and Hugo shot together. Talk about acting a big moment at the drop of a hat.
That was their first scene together?! That's incredible. I definitely gained a new level of respect for both of them after watching their performances in this.

As much as I enjoyed the Graphic Novel, most of the changes for this adaption I prefer.
Oh, interesting! Most of what I've seen is from people who prefer the graphic novel.
@@stevensauer8539 Oddly though, fascism is actually a left wing ideology but history got rewritten (again)
The word fascism is derived from the Italian fascio which was used figuratively by late 20th century Italian socialists who became known as "the fasci"
Mussolini was an ardent socialist much like his Father and formed their local socialist branch.
The italian fascist was an opportunist that cynically used his parents legacy to give him self some legitimacy in the eyes of the working class. I think the graphic novel was written in the 1980s. Some things never change. History repeats.
There are many things that cause vomiting (emesis) prior to death, especially bioweapons.

Thanks for watching! :)
The main character Winston Smith is played by John Hurt who plays the Arch Chancellor Adam Sutler in this movie.
