  • My 30-year-old son talks about his skin care over the years and what he learned growing up with a dermatologist mom. For the products Frank recommends visit the website at www.drbaileysk...
In our video interview I ask Frank a few questions to give our viewers a hint of what it’s like to have a dermatologist as a mom:
What was it like to grow up with a dermatologist?
Frank admits that the first time he really noticed how helpful it was to have a dermatologist mom was when he had bad acne. Frank would get the occasional huge and deep acne cyst. They came up randomly, usually greeting him in the morning before school (as they do). The cystic acne problem started in his preteen years even before he had a problem with the more common white heads and blackheads of acne. He remembers well how he was really embarrassed by the first giant cyst. It was on his nose. One little kid at school pointed at the ‘thing’ on his nose, which made having the giant cyst even worse. Luckily, I (derm-mom) could ‘fix’ it - an injection of cortisone right into his giant nose cyst! Injecting Frank was a first for both of us. He did great and didn’t faint - and the cyst shrunk!!
Giant acne cysts continued randomly through Frank’s teen years and we got to do this a few more times. He was always a champ. Giant random acne cysts are a part of acne that is hard to prevent with medication. He had been on oral acne antibiotics and used acne skin care products but these huge cysts would still break through.
Frank also was my guinea pig for acne products! He remembers that pretty clearly. He used the Ultimate Acne Solutions Treatment Kit and the Back Acne Kit as I was developing them. He continued using them throughout his teen acne-prone years. (They did help!)
He admits in this interview - much to my surprise - that he did not use sunscreen before school every day! Argh!! I wanted him to and I thought he was. Hmm….. He did when we traveled as a family. Once I jog his memory, Frank admits that he also wore a hat and used sunscreen at other times too. Hmm…..
He changes the subject by saying, “I got to learn so much about skin care”.
What skin care product can’t Frank live without?
The Dry Skin Hand Cream. Frank uses this at least 3 times a day. He loves it. His hands get dry, even living in temperate Seattle. I, derm-mom, think it’s because he cooks and washes his hands with dish soap - against my advice. (I will send him a hypoallergenic hand soap - which should be at the kitchen sink!)
What is Frank’s biggest skin care confession?
He has keratosis pilaris (chicken skin bumps on the back of his arms). He knows now that it is common. He also knows what the word keratin means from working on mom’s UA-cam videos. Keratosis pilaris are spires of keratin sticking out of pores, typically on the back of the arms.
Frank also reveals in this interview that he thinks he has funky toenails that might have fungus!! But on closer look later by handy derm-mom, they just need a nice bit of TLC and/or a man-pedicure.
What does Frank think is the best skin care advice I ever gave him?
At this point it is beard care. Frank had a beard until right before this interview. Every time he shaves his face, with either an electric or wet razor, he gets a little red. He uses the Calming Zinc soap to cleanse his skin after shaving and it also calms down any skin redness or irritation from shaving. He then applies the Omega Enriched Booster Oil to hydrate his skin. When he had a beard, he would also use the Calming Zinc to cleanse the skin under the beard and then apply the Omega Booster Oil on the beard hairs. He learned from me that he needed to carefully apply the oil to both the beard hair and the beard skin to help prevent beardruff and keep his beard soft.
That’s what it was like for Frank to grow up with a dermatologist mom!
