How to Raise Thousands of Silkworm (Modern Chinese Sericulture)

  • I went to a place called Shaowo Town in Guizhou to see how and why the locals are raising thousands and thousands of silkworm.
To be honest, I was pretty worried about filming this video. Not because I didn't want to touch the silkworm. I was actually worried that my fat feet would end up stepping on a few. Thankfully, that didn't happen!

In fact, before late Qing dynasty, Chinese silk producers would let the worms grow as butterflies and then collect the silk, because people thought it too cruel to kill them. However, when European silk producers just killed the worms and saved so much time, they gained a much higher productivity and could sell their silk at a very low price. Then, the Chinese silk producers adapted their way of production and started to kill worms in the late Qing dynasty.
