  • Kusuma Rajaiah, basically a Technocraft in Handloom Technology and having 40 years practical experience in this industry is aware of all these facts and struggled for several years to create an alternative silk fabric where there is no killing, no cruelty and at the same time the fabric value is totally protected. That struggle paved the way to invent Ahimsa Silk.
    Kusuma. Rajaiah conducted research in the field and invented the technique of getting silk yarn from cocoons without killing the silk worms, for the first time in the World in the year 1991. After prolonged research the Ahimsa silk is made marketable in the year 2001.
    In our production process child and forced labor are not engaged and there is no discrimination on the basis of sex.
    The Hindi word “ahimsa” means Non-violence. It is used to describe this innovation because the fabric is manufactured in a process where silkworms are not killed. For this reason, the product is also known as peace silk. Ahimsa silk is extracted after the silkworm has completed metamorphosis and emerged from the cocoon. Considering the increased awareness of animal protectionism around the world.
    Kusuma Rajaiah, a senior technical assistant with a government organization in India, is tasked with the responsibility of developing ahimsa silk into a viable commercial product.
    There are many types of silkworms, but Bombyx mori is mainly used for commercial cultivation. The silkworms are placed in bamboo baskets and fed mulberry leaves. As they consume the leaves, the insects exude viscous fluids through head glands. These substances are fibroin (raw silk) and sericin (bonding gum). The substances harden upon contact with air, forming the basic silk filament, which is a combination of two fibers held together by the gum. The silkworm oozes out the fibroin continuously for about 1,000 yards, forming an oval nest or cocoon. But as the worm is still alive inside the cocoon, this poses a problem for devotees who respect all living things big and small.
    In the production of regular silk, the cocoons are immersed in boiling water to kill the worms and spool the silk yarn. With ahimsa silk, however, cocoons are left alone for seven to 10 days. Once the worms mature, they are allowed to pierce the cocoons and fly away as moths. Only then does the manufacture of peace silk begin. Each cocoon is checked individually to ensure that the moth has escaped before the silk thread is spun.
    Spinning takes around two months and weaving another month. In other words, shipments can be ready three months after the moths escape. We can produce up to 2,000 meters per month. Ahimsa silk is promoted as having the popular properties of regular silk. Even though it is slightly less lustrous, it is even softer to the touch. Currently, it remains a niche product due to its higher price range. While normal silk fabric of the 8gsm vary is price with that ahimsa of the same quality. “People are becoming more environmentally aware and compassionate to animals. “Though ahimsa silk may not replace regular silk, we are confident it will be adopted by those who are concerned about animals,”.

    I started raising my own silkworms...which is shockingly easy...and collecting and washing and spinning their cocoons for use after they emerged. I like to spin and weave and knit as a hobby anyway, and it seemed fun to try.
    My silk worms and moths live like royalty. After they emerge, mate, lay eggs, and die naturally, their bodies go out to the chickens, who consider them a delicacy.
    And I get lovely silk, which not a single worm got boiled alive for.
    I happily pay extra for tussah and muga ahimsa silk as well from India, both of which are different varieties of silk moth that make lovely copper and gold silk. Absolutely gorgeous stuff, made by wonderful people. India's textiles have been world famous for thousands of years and for good reason; Indian textile artists produce some of the most beautiful textiles on this planet to this day.
    No reason to harm the moths at all for me to enjoy silk. Thank you to the wonderful people in India who raise and weave ahimsa silk!

      Yessss,beautifully said,Systlin. I,too,flatly refuse to have my little silkies go through the horror of being boiled alive. It should be publicised more,and,people made aware of what happens to those poor little beings. I am only small like you,but,I have compassion,and,absolute support for Ahimsa silk manufacturers. I sure would not mind paying extra for Ahimsa silk,in fact I would be proud to show it off. The dollar need not rule over horrific crueltly. I will investigate whether I can get it in Australia ,where I am from,and,would be more than happy to pay for Ahimsa silk. More people need to know about it.

    My Japanese ancestors were silk farmers, and while I've always wanted to run a small-scale silk production one day, I always wondered if there was a way to do it without boiling the pupae alive (I don't know if they suffer the same way we do, but it just seems so hellish). This is inspirational.

      I am wondering the same thing. Are the workers given a livable wage and are they treated well and given breaks and time to stand and stretch. I see the woman sitting or squatting on the ground crouched over and I feel that the process could be made better to put the worker in better environment and using ergonomics when designing the different stations in which each worker will be working. I suppose that once the factory or shop was designed correctly in favor of the workers' comfort it would be better. I know there would be a layout of cash to design propped work stations but afterward it would just be so much better for everyone. Also, the paying of a living wage would require both the maker and buyer of the silk to be less wealthy but imagine the good it would do to the local economy if this was the normal practice.
      In my country it's often a bigger penalty for cruelty to animals than it is for domestic violence. But there is this justification that adults are making choices to be in those positions and therefore the animal is much more vulnerable and should therefore be given more protection. Sadly this doesn't take into account the trauma people suffer from birth. These cycles of violence that create the unending and self-perpetuating conditions which basically enslave us as humans are not understood or considered. If a worker is starving or their family needs food now they will then out of immediate necessity have to work where they can find a source of income and get stuck in a cycle working for pennies an hour in harsh conditions because it serves to keep them from their immediate need of food etc ... People need to be educated about the economic institutions that are designed to make people rich at the expense of people and nature. Also that there is a role for a government that will not allow people to set up these companies where they take unfair advantage of the population and the natural world. This is all well protecting people and nature from harm. Creating good community government and not letting money be the deciding factor in voting but integrity and the candidate's individual wisdom as people in the community will know how that person behaves as the politicians would be local. I don't know that's all I can see as a way to fix our desperately sick institutions and help people and nature.

I planted a Black mulberry tree 15 years ago for just this purpose. Now it is ready. I intend to gather silk from the cocoons in a natural way to spin myself,or,blend with my very fine Merino wool from my sheep. It doesn't have to be cruel. Boiling them alive is an appalling act of horrid cruelty to get the silk. It should be totally banned.

    • @RajaiahKusuma
      @RajaiahKusuma  7 років тому +4

      Ec Bambers The silk worm eats about 3 kilos of mulberry leaves. Once it stops eating, it never takes food. That is the nature of silk worm. There is no question of starvation. Regarding flying, because of 500 years domestication, the body of silk worm grows, it will try to fly and play in the baskets and goes in to natural death, as usual like any other creature. So we are avoiding the interruption of life of silk worms. There is no cruelty in our process.

      Funny question ! God made them(silkworm) live without food for few days(4 to 6days) during which they make love, mate and lay eggs before dying naturally. No food so no mouth parts, imagine how they come out from the cocoon by cutting/Piercing the cocoon wall. However it is not cent percent Ahimsa though it is not killed by boiling in water, but living pupae are thrown away as paultry food for its delecracy . I am making 100 percent Ahimsa silk in case of Muga Silk which is the costliest silk amongst all the silk.

      Katie Schaitel when silk moth identified, it is used to be on the trees. When bulk production is started, they used to feed the Mulberry leaves by keeping worms in the basket. Like wise hundreds of years the worms body became heavy weight than the wings strength. So it is not able to fly.

    but have they find a way not only to let some silk worms live and get out and not get boiled alive .. or can they make sure none get tortured to death and have the right to fullfill their life they die after a couple of days anyway after coming out from the coocoon so theres no problem if they live so many. make sure the silk worms and silk moth get it better... this is the future none cruelty its great its worth it. to be good to living creatures.

    I wonder what conditions the moths that laid the eggs which turned into the cocoons that were "purchased at the silk markets" were made to live in. I find it hard to believe that any form of use of animals doesn't amount to abuse at some stage, besides obvious exceptions such as observational animal studies. Ahimsa doesn't just mean the animal is allowed to live and not killed, it means cause no harm surely. This is something that cannot be assured if the cocoons are simply purchased without considering how they got to the market. Just as we shouldn't decide if an animal is killed, we shouldn't get to decide whether an animal is brought into life purely to be used for its by-products so to speak. Is more humane than traditional methods humane enough? In my opinion, no. Hope a day will come when people can look beyond culture, tradition, old habits and pleasure when it comes to ethics and morals.

      What would you rather use, this or plastic clothing that kills wildlife? Cotton takes up lots of space too and takes away wild lands. Nothing is cruelty free.

    Why ahimsa saree has no lusture ?

    • @RajaiahKusuma
      @RajaiahKusuma  5 років тому +1

      geetha priya Ahimsasilk is made with out killing the silk worm. after pierce the cocoon the continuity of filament will be broken into pieces. So the silk fiber has to extract from the Pierced cocoon and spin into required yarn. As the yarn is being spinning, it will loose its luster. But all properties are same. Still you want to know more, feel free to call 9989392461

    Yes! finally! i know that its more convenient for us to kill the pupae, but i agree with these people. Just take the time and stop being lazy murderers silk farmers! make some yarn!
    Plus! Making a fricking silk yarn would make for a pretty nice gift for people who like to knit!
