In essence, all digital. Using a Behringer X32 with an S16 extension as the audio interface, and running mainly my guitar rig into it (a Helix Rack, a POD Pro xt, an HX Stomp and a BIAS Rack, plus a DI - of course I have more obscure stuff I can reamp through) plus some vocal mics. I also have three V30 1x12s miced up with SM57s all the time, powered from 90W pedalboard power amps, though I will eventually be powering them with a triple 20W 6V6 push-pull tube power amp of my own making once that is done and tested. Other than that, no outboard gear (not counting MIDI controllers, of course). Since the X32 and all the guitar stuff lives in a rack, there actually is literally nothing on my desk except for MIDI controllers. However, I'm in the process of moving into a new apartment I just bought this week, and the new studio there will be greatly expanded in some key areas. First of all, this will be a multi-computer setup, focusing mostly on Samples and MIDI, and the DAW will be beefed up with a secondary PC running some OSC touchscreen remote control stuff for the DAW, so I will have to touch that as little as possible. This will be in a multi-room config, meaning that all the noisy stuff will live in a compartment in the attic, that includes machines and guitar speakers - I expect the control room to be ultimately not even having a single fan blowing in it.
Studio tours are rad, but I definitely prefer this type of content. Love to see you create, your workflows and just generally being excited about making music. Love it!
I think I just watch these to see how excited you are. Not at the point to get some desk outboard gear quite yet, but man it makes me happy seeing the emotion you put into your passion.
Well, now you have to show us the full desk and how you're routing everything etc! Salutations from mostly cloudy and still sorta weirdly not back to normal Ireland! ☘️☮️🤘🏽🤠👍🏽☮️☘️
@@AndrewMasters I did the same thing with the GA Pre73 MKIII/EQ81 MKII's, 2 of each one with a COMP-3A and one with a COMP-2A, also have 2 of the Comp54 MKII's. I run a pretty well built hybrid system I built from cheaper pieces first then added affordable but quality pieces. I have 4 ART TPS II pre-amps, i used them a ton in a studio I worked in and you cant beat them for the price. As far as my console (in the box), I use a softtube Console One and Fader One for Logic Pro X and a mix of softube, TC Electronics and Waves plugins, with a Behringer X touch for my main logic workflow. I run directly through my DI, use plugins as needed if needed, but sparingly, I run out to a Studio Master (analog console) 16-4-2 Series 5 mixing desk, and whatever outboard gear I want to insert at that point and into a TEAC A-2300sx, then back into the box for final mix and then for mastering, ill keep the masters digital if no analog mastering is necessary. I really love that desk you have Andrew. That has been my bane, for the limited space I have and the kit, two amps, two extension cabs, 4 interfaces/synths, many guitars and basses, mics, stands, cables etc. Footprint is everything, and my current desk has a side car with 12u rack, filled, and another 4 u rack on top of it filled. Plusthe 2u's on my desk and another 6 on the other side. I need a desk like yours! \
Man - the two mic'd guitars sound so good! I actually just got some Warm stuff coming my way - their WA2A is coming and also their Tone Shaper Pre- wanted to try something different but super jacked.
Sick video! I got rid of so much outboard gear, but I think I'm going to start building up my rack again. I think this in a stereo pair would be an amazing place to start. I love the software preamps on my Apollo Twin, but I think some real hardware is needed in the chain. These pre's paired with my new WA 251 mic would be just amazing!!
Great set up and nice job of covering the gear. My eye kept going to the stomp box board on the wall. You've inspired me to do something similar. I need to reduce my floor clutter.
ahhhh man everything sounds SO good! I am a huge WA fan and think the 273 will be my first outboard preamp purchase! I currently only have an Apollo x4 but will be adding to the team soon enough! Also very happy to hear you're thinking of launching a membership program. I was thinking about how I wish you did that a few months back, I look forward to hearing more about it!
Thanks! Pumped for you to have them in your setup. A game changer for me. Also pumped for the membership. There’s a lot of copyright hurdles with UA-cam that I can completely bypass with the membership.
Hey Andrew! Your contents are just great. I'm planning to build my rec studio so I found that you are one of the most informative channels in YT. Thanks a ton.
Nice setup and playing. The concept of having a ‘console that’s not a conole’ by fronting a DAW with a group of high quality mic pre’s is becoming a fairly common approach and makes sense versus owning a full console. With the pre’s having both Mic and Line inputs you could leverage them as external hardware in Pro Tools to bus out and back in just to add some of that character to a track during mixing.
I like it because you can play with different Pres that all have a different flavor. In this case he went with all Neve style but throwing down a WA-412 or whatever instead of the 73s and you could have any range of Pres that fit your needs.
I bought one, to try out. I just LOVE the 73 eq- So, I just bought another one...I'm only doing two tracks at a time,. ( I'm not recording drums, or full bands). At least I can run those in stereo....I'm stoked! You inspired me to do the 'console thing'- It makes sense, to me. IF I was doing drums, and bands..I'd def. get 10 or 12 of these. There are GREAT pieces of gear! Warm Audio has invaded my studio, and taken over.
You should grab the Royer mic clip to line up your 121 and 57 perfectly in phase AND on the same stand! It was designed by a buddy of mine right here in Windsor, Ontario, Canada (he also designed the X-clip for a 57 and SDC combo)! 🤘🎤
Got an Allen and Heath GL4 with presonus quantum 4848 converters. Then some warm pres and compression in the outboard racks, also so got some other stuff but they get the most use!
That is definitely my dream for me. I have an Apollo 8 with a UA 417B going in ADAT. The 417B pushed me to use Outboard Pre’s. I would love to fill up my rack with warm audio stuff. Thanks for all your content. You are doing a great job. Aloha from Maui!!🤙🏾
Ive got the Golden Age Pre-73! I run a Warm Audio WA-8000 through the Pre-73 and then that into my Antelope Zen Go with DSP plugins 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Vocals pop and hit you in the face I love it
Dude I could watch this stuff all day long loved the video man! And I still can’t get over how crisp and clear this new lens looks it looks ridiculous man! The membership coming up are you going more in detail with your mixes? Like showing us why and how you did certain things to sound better?
Agree on the Neve vs Warm. Own a BAE 1023 and it is cutting hairs for the money. Have a 6 channel (technically 7 with the BAE) as a side car for mixing and it is great. Do not get me wrong, the BAE is stellar and I would own 6 but the cost is just dumb for the end result comparison. Used 4 channels on a small trap kit and it was some of the best drums I have ever recorded. Full commit on the EQ! Great stuff!
Hey man your channel really inspired me to remodel my small home studio. Funny thing I built my own desk and as of now, I only have 2 racks installed and to make it look full, I added a power conditioner and 2 cover plates 🤣🤣🤣 I live near the Hideout studio and really enjoyed your video tour of it as well. Keep up the great work 💪🏾
Now you'll need to get some matching sidecars for the rest of the gear you are going to get. There's still plenty of great gear that will help complete your studio and make it even better. :) Keep up the good work.
The 273 pre sounds great. The version with the EQ doesn't sound as good to me though. I had to return it because I just didn't like what it was doing. I now use my Orban 622B after the 273 with much better results.
Love your videos. I've been really considering outboard gear, your multiple videos at the Warm Audio HQ, put me over the top. I ordered both the WA-73 EQ, and the WA-76 with your link, so hopefully that helps you out a bit. Keep up the great work, and your kids drawings are incredible!! bet people would buy them and he he could start a little gear fund.
Holy hell! WHY is the stem/rod on your hi-hat stand so damn tall?!?! You must sit directly on the floor?! 😝 Great vid as per usual! Love em, keep em comin'!! In pre-amp land, I have a WA273, but the rest of my "neve" duties are 2 of the GAP PREQ-73 and 2 GAP Pre-73. So 6 channels of neve flavour. Then I've got 6 channels of API style which is a WA412 and 2 WA12's. TOO much fun! I like neve on OH's, rooms, snare top and bottom, and then api on kick in, kick out, kick sub and toms for that PUNCH! 🤘👊
very inspiring i run a home studio, and yeah the console isusually the missing part i am currently using the mackie pro fx12v3, but i like their onyx version
Hey Andrew, thanks for great content! How do you go about tweaking your EQs if you yourself are the drummer and far away from controls? How did you dial in the gain for that matter?
I think we can agree that putting stuff into a rack doesn't make it "a console" 😜 Pretty sweet setup though, Andrew! I wish Warm Audio release a proper budget-priced console/summing mixer.
You’ve gotta check out the new warm audio fuzz and phaser pedals. They sound great and like with everything they make, look cool too. Also I wish I could remember the name, but there is some Chinese neural dsp like knock off pedal unit. It profiles amps and pedals and it’s only 300-400 bucks depending on who’s selling it. Seems almost too good to be true, but if it is true, you can literally get a neural dsp for 300 bucks. Even looks the same.
Hey Andrew, nice video mate! I have a WA273EQ with 2 Distressors on the Inserts and its a great chain. Also I love that 24sp desk but couldn’t hear clearly who makes it?
Hi Andrew. Is it possible to get a few raw stems of drums and guitar going directly into the 73 pre? I’m thinking of purchasing one and will gladly use your code as a thank you. -Shannon.
Loving everything in the desk right now. What’s in your desk?
Empty beer cans!
A presonus studio192 and a presonus 8 channel pre. All the color is added in the mix..

Nothing yet.

One of my favourite FOB songs. Definitely took me by surprise to hear that in the intro!! Sounds killer dude 🤘
Warm Audio stuff is sweet. We've been using the WA LA2A and WA Pultec and getting great vocals on our new record
The drums sound incredible, wow

Great stuff man!!! Thanks
that disloyal order of water buffalos intro, I popped immediately lol
it's been a long way to the top, but now you got rock n roll haha
Could you make a comparison between these and the UAD unison Neves?
Would love to see this too.
So preamp > compression > preamp?
Hi Andrew, have you done a bus compressor shootout? Do I want the WA Bus Comp or the Stam, or the Heritage, or the Audioscape G Comp?
Can you go into more detail on the miking and how you used the auxes on the rhythm guitar?
Or point me in the direction of a good tutorial on that?
i like how this is more of a tracking channel than a mixing channel
Tracking is more fun!

yeah, in fact, it's better. Cheaper and more serviceable. Add a summing mixer if you miss that.

Dangerfox, there’s a code in all of my descriptions to save $100 on one if you order
Cool!
I would like to see the video were you do the preamp shoot out, do you have a link? Awesome videos, keep up the great work👍
I know dude, same. That was before I even made videos, we were prepping for a session and just shot them out before hand.
@@AndrewMasters Oh, ok thank you, great video today🙂
mad set up!
Great guitar tone
Thanks!
Super cool
Thank you
Andrew you are cool!
Nice.
Can you do a video on how you lock in or quantize drums?
Wall mounted pedal board is a cool idea. Where did you find that?
Sick FOB!!!
AHH yes. Unfaithful Sequence of Elemental Cattle! My favorite Drop Away Child song
woah that was heavy

like to hear a lot more sustain from the toms, but cool. Nice new kit and set up

This is a really good video
Thanks broski

What interface are the 73s going into?
