    I'm falling in love with my Warm Audio WA73-EQ more every tracking and mixing session. One main reason is, I love that I can use it on the front end of my tracking or as a plugin/insert for my DAW. And the Warm Audio WA73-EQ is a beast at doing both! In this video I show how I setup my WA73 to be used both ways.

    Nice Tutorial! I have done this on my drum tacking and call it "Post-Pre Amping" - the pre adds so much color and clarity (between a TB12 or a WA73EQ, best of both worlds!). Plus its nice to be able to clean up the track (gates, filtering, mild eq/comp) before it hits the preamp - creates a great sounding clean tracks/stems). A cost-effective game-changer! Cheers!

    • @ZachWirchak

      I personally do... to my ears, with the hardware I have vs the plugins that they are modeled after, the hardware sounds 5-10% better. That percentage over a bunch of tracks makes a decent difference in the end IMO.

    If you take XLR out of the 73 and go XLR into the Scarlett wouldn’t you be also using the Scarlett’s in built preamps? Wouldn’t you be better to go line in for you front end to bypass the Scarlett’s preamp stage?

    • @ZachWirchak
      @ZachWirchak  Рік тому +1

      I've found the preamps on the 3rd gen scarletts to do very little to no coloring with the preamps. I'd say 95+% of the color I get while recording is coming from the WA73 & WA76. I also think that if you use the 1/4" you're still using the circuitry that the XLR uses. I also always start with "Air" turned off when using the WA73 & WA76 so I'm getting the most transparent sound/signal from the scarlett. But I've been super happy with the sound I'm able to get from the WA73! Would absolutely recommend!

  • @DrewScottThomas
    @DrewScottThomas 3 місяці тому

    Thanks for the great video. I really enjoyed it. Just wondering, could you not just run the balanced 1//4" TRS line level output from the 1073 to your interface, thus bypassing the pre amps in your interface (assuming the interface is set to 'line')? I have a UAD, so perhaps it is different. Or, maybe you are running two outputs simultaneously? Thanks again for the great video!

  • @quocpham8738
    @quocpham8738 Рік тому +2

    Very informative, thank u. I saw in another video of yours that has this simultaneous set up going through the wa76. Did u use both xlr and trs inputs and outputs in that scenario too? Was there any sound detrements ran this way?

    • @ZachWirchak
      @ZachWirchak  Рік тому +1

      So I use just an XLR between the WA73 and WA76. Then on the output of the WA76 I have both. XLR running to the front end of my audio interface, and the 1/4" to my interface input 3 for using it as a plugin/insert in my DAW. I tested it before deciding to do it this way and I've noticed ZERO change in in the quality of sound. I love that I can use it this way. People have asked why I just don't track with input 3 when recording, but with Cubase if you have a external fx setup, then that in/out is disabled from use. So it's just easier for me and more flexible to have it being sent to 2 different inputs.

    • @ZachWirchak

      I haven't had any phase issues with it. I also haven't ran a printed track thru the WA73 with the original track to check phase. Cubase adjusts for any latency with offboard gear, so I'm sure that helps a lot.

    What about for vocals? Where do I plug my mic so I can use the WA73 as a plug-in?

    • @ZachWirchak
      @ZachWirchak  Рік тому +1

      You would plug in the mic on the front end XLR. You can then monitor it in your DAW while it's loaded up at an external fx on your track. Or you can add it as a plugin after you've already tracked your vocals.

    Curious why you use both outputs ... why not loop it through 1 input/output? Wouldn't it still all work the same? ALSO, have you used the INSERT function at all? I'm so curious about that and how levels would work.

    • @ZachWirchak
      @ZachWirchak  Рік тому

      The main reason is w/ Cubase if you setup an external FX, it then makes it so you cannot use that for any other inputs. So if I had input 1 assigned to the WA73 as a "plugin", then I wouldn't be able to use input 1 for tracking. And since on my Focusrite 18i20 3rd gen, I have both input 1 and 2 on the front, I use those for stereo recording and I wouldn't want the WA73 signal chain one side and not the other.

    • @ZachWirchak
      @ZachWirchak  Рік тому

      Also, I have not used the insert on the WA73 yet. But I think I might switch to using my WA76 in that fashion, or at least try it.

  • @RMelvin71
    @RMelvin71 Рік тому +1

    Wouldn't that send audio to the line input on channel 3 of your interface at the same time you're using the inputs on the front? Why not just use the line out for all and just change the i/o as out 3 and in on 1 of the focusrite?

    • @ZachWirchak
      @ZachWirchak  Рік тому +1

      Great question! The main reason I have it setup this way, is because once you assign an external device in Cubase, you can't select it as a track input. So since I have it setup as a "plugin", I can no longer choose input 3 for a track source to record. There are ways to record it into Cubase with input 3, but it's just easier to use it on the front end into input 1. Or at least for my workflow it works perfectly.

    Thanks for this info, it was difficult to find information on this. Regarding the mic inputs, can you not use the one on the back of the unit? It is labeled "mic" so I assume you cannot plug in a line level source to it. And if the Line button is pressed, it should turn that input off as well, no? Or am I wrong? I only ask cause I prefer to not have a mic cables coming out of the front of this.

    • @ZachWirchak
      @ZachWirchak  Рік тому

      It should work with either output you choose. I personally use the TRS when using it as an insert. What DAW and interface do you use? Do you have the ability to adjust the send and receive level when using it as an insert? The level adjustments I look at when using it as an insert are the send level from the DAW, the preamp level, the output level and then the return level in the DAW. I rarely have to touch the send and return from the DAW.

I'm using xlr to trs for the xlr output option and im using trs to trs for the line input because that's the only option available for the input. Also, what are the unbalanced insert send and returns for? Im running all of my gear into a patch bay. Thanks for your help man.

    • @ZachWirchak
      @ZachWirchak  Рік тому

      For my setup I am using both outputs. The 1/4" output I use for my "plug in" loop and the XLR I use for my front end recording. Those sends and returns are for inserting another piece of gear (like a compressor). There is a button on the front that will engage that loop. If I remember correctly it places the insert after the preamp? Let me know if that answers your question!

      @mrsayang 2 роки тому +1

      Since it is a MONO preamp, that will not work. The front XLR mic input jack is just to give you more choice wether you want to use the front or the back. Most preamps have only XLR connections at the back. Warm Audio made it easy to connect a mic at the front very easy. If you need to use 2 mics, then better buy the Warm Audio WA 273 EQ, that is a twin preamp with same features and same layout.

Not an over the top color, but it felt like it had more depth. I tested it with electric guitar and bass, and it was more noticeable on the clean bass guitar. They both were set with zero EQ and the tone button not engaged. I'm a big fan of the tone button on the unit, I have it engaged about 99% of the time. But where I think this unit really runs away with it, is I've recently used it for voice.... and that is it's sweet spot for me. Vocals or voice over into the WA73 and then into the WA76... it's amazing. The signal into the DAW is outstanding. Before I'd always go right into the interface and then slap some plugins on the track. That is my honest "input" on the unit!

      The best way to do it would be to run the mic into the unit, make sure the 'Line' button is NOT PRESSED, then you'll want to set your level which is the red knob. Then you'll want to make sure your output level is at a good level. Then you want to run out of one of the outputs on the back to your interface. Then your final level adjustment will be on the actual interface itself. Sorry for the delayed response, but I hope you've had luck with it!

    So that mean we can't have 2 setup on one device.

    • @ZachWirchak
      @ZachWirchak  Рік тому +1

      When using it like a plugin - Once you have it dialed in on a vocal track and I love the way it sounds, I export that vocal track solo so it mates/prints the Preamp/EQ to the track. Then you can reimport it to the project and it will keep that sound. Then you can move on to the next track, etc. It's more time consuming than using a digital plugin, but it most all the time can/will sound better.
      BUT, if I were to track vocals, I'd suggest getting the sound you want on the front end when recording them. And then fine tuning with digital/in the box plugins.

      @@future_Victoryofficial You'll want 2 XLR's and 2 1/4" patch cables.
      1 XLR will be from the microphone to the front input on the preamp. This is for when you're actively recording your lines. And the other XLR will go from your output on the preamp to your audio interface.
      To run it like a plugin in you'll want 1 1/4" patch cable going from an output on your interface to the 1/4" input on the back of the preamp. Then you'll run the other 1/4" patch cable from the 1/4" output on the preamp to an input on your audio interface.
      Depending on your setup, you could run it all on 1 input on your interface. You just wouldn't ever be able to track with it and have it active as a plugin at the same time. For example, if i'm tracking guitar, I get a signal sent to input #1 and input #3. Input #1 is from the front end of the preamp (the XLR in and XLR out on the preamp). My input #3 is the one I us for the plugin, that is being fed by the active guitar XLR on the front and the patch cable on the back. Aka, the XLR and patch cable output on the preamp are both sending a signal to their respective inputs on the audio interface. That might be a little more confusing, but that's why I left it out of the video. Hope all that helps!

      If you ran them all to this unit, you would run into two issues. 1) it would effect all the channels with any adjustment you make and 2) which I think is the bigger issue, it is a mono unit so it would only output 1 mono signal. This particular unit if really best used with 1 signal in and out. But if you've got money to spend... you could buy 16 of them or 8 of the two channel versions, then you've have a epic setup!

    HI Zach (or anyone). Thanks for a great video. I've tried following your steps: I've taken 1 of the 2 lines out (TRS 1/4in) from my Scarlett 18i8, into the line in of my WA73-EQ, then TRS out from the WA73 to Line in 5 (TRS 1/4in) in the Scarlett. The 'Line' button on the WA73 is pushed in. I created an External FX in Cubase and inserted it into an audio channel which had been giving out about -10 dBFS. When the FX is active, the volume decreases to a very low level (-20 to -40) and when I increase gain, either in the WA73 or the volume knob on the Scarlett, I get loud feedback. What am I doing wrong?

    • @ZachWirchak
      @ZachWirchak  Рік тому +1

      Hey! Thanks for watching! What output are you running from the 18i8 to the WA73? you'll want to make sure to use 3 or 4. Then in Focusrite control you want to make sure that output 3 or 4 is assigned properly, I believe it should say DAW 3 or 4 depending on what output you are running. But I can confirm when I'm back in front of my recording rig.

      That sounds rad and it's totally do able! I would recommend running them on the front end of the system. That is how you'll see it don't commonly enough. Run each mic into it's dedicated signal chain on the front end and then into the audio interface. Then each track going into your DAW would be processed with the preamp, EQ & compressor. I use my WA73 EQ and WA76 Compressor 90% on the front end, so the starting point with my track in the DAW is that much better sounding and closer to final. 500 series gear is a great option too depending on exactly what you're looking for and it saves space.

I didn’t need to be a genius to figure out that comes from the DBX more I add the drive more it’s there ! I tested all my mics with my Roland Octacapture Amd everything sounded just perfect .. and the 4040 has an unequal sound .. one of the best of my Arsenal on everything I tried it .. and it was the first time I heard all it’s potential as I bought it with the DBX and never tried to test it straight through my interface ..
    Now I understood that I need a tube preamp and I’ve heard about the WA73 I’m wondering if this thing would have the same solid state problem! Which is .. a cut edgy agressive sound around 1.5-2khz.. that turn everything unusable for my taste.

      Thanks for the comment! You can run this same setup with just the 1 output from the preamp, in my case output 3. It works better with my brain having it setup for "front end" use and "plugin use". I'm also curious why you shouldn't run XLR Line out to a Mic Amp (which I assume you mean audio interface?) I've tested it with both line and mic levels to the audio interface from the WA73 and there was zero difference in the two signals.
