    On my 4th trip to Scotland in April 2024 I visited Mull, Skye, Raasay. It was quite the adventure! A lot of single track roads with blind curves and pot holes. While visiting Ardnamurchan I stayed at Mingary Castle which was awesome!

    To answer your Jura a question: No. Recently had the 7 oak and 18 (and 12 and NAS but those weren't even finished) side by side and prefered the 7 oak immensely. Thought I got the best of Jura, but I regret having bought the bottle for 40 euros having tried it at home and sober. I'll probably blend it away in heavy sherry or peat over time.

    I once overheard a lady in a liquor store asking for a bottle of Jura because "it's her husband's favourite"....it took all my self control to prevent the whisky-geek in me from jumping in and reccomending something better! I wondered if hubby is secretly drain-pouring the gift Juras and doesn't have the heart to tell his wife to stop buying them for him...😂😅
    We definitely want to see Ian try Black Rod again and all the other crappy drain-pours you can find😝!

    I don't wanna be a know-it-all but Ian was a bit over the place talking about wood chemicals. You can't say that you have phenols AND guaiacyls. When you take a look at lignin you see that it's mainly made from 3 different phenyl-propane units. One of them is coniferyl-alcohol which has a phenolic structure of which guaiacyl is a part of.

    I like the concept of an Island region even though the distance between Arran and Orkney or Lewis is massive it would work better than trying to subdivide it further. Arran is effectively geographically closer to Lowland or Campbeltown than any other islander. Jura would probably jump at the chance to be lumped in with Islay. As far as I’m aware there are now 3 on Orkney (HP, Scapa and Deerness). As far as the rest go you would probably need to call them “Hebridean” or something taking in Skye, Mull, Raasay, Lewis, Harris, Uist, Barra and Tiree as there seems to be quite a few of these island gin producers branching out into single malt with a stash of casks soon coming of age.

    • @IanBear1000

      Hebridean would certainly have a good ring!

    Islands def should be its own region. Talisker and Tobermory stand out for me. Talisker had this richness that really hits the spot. Loving the Wilder Seas bottle atm its aged in Cognac cask. Love this podcast and good to see Ian back and cracking jokes always makes me laugh.

    Visited the Outer Hebrides in 2019 and also had a tour at Abhainn Dearg. Their 3yo is horrible and the 10yo (at 46%) is ok... but I really enjoy the 10yo CS. Tried quite a few of them (PX, Madeira,...). Compared to Abhainn Dearg, Springbank looks like Macallan 😅. And they do everything on their own...+ they use malt & peat from the island.
    So my point is if you want to try it, buy one of their cask strength releases :-)

    Other possible regions could be Hebrides which could be broken down into inner and outer, Skye (including Raasay), Banffshire, Aberdeenshire, Dufftown, Keith, Fife etc.

    Hey guys! I was at my local pub (the Pot Still).... and one of my fave Bartenders suggested that I should try Abhainn dearg (Oran) as it was Unique!
    I tried the PX Golden Promise Cask Strength. I thought it was interesting! Certainly not worth the price, but there was a weird Praline element. (I have found that with other Golden promise whiskies).
    I suspect, that if wood policy improves it would get better.
    The bartender in question had to beg Frank to get one bottle for the pub and.... it is a very divisive thing to it.

    cambeltown is classified as a distillery on account of its historical importance for whisky plus the fact it had three regions. To my mind, The West Coast would be a better region to include islands plus the likes of Ardna., Oban, Ben nevis etc.

    I don’t know how you get a bottle of 22 Ledaig for 200 quid. There’s nothing like that in the US, you can barely get the 18 for under $200. I purchased a 20cl bottle of 25yo Ledaig hand-filled distillery exclusive direct from Tobermory for $120 which my London friends just brought with them across the pond. The 70cl bottle was 400 quid. I was happy with the price I paid, still am. Just wish it was more accessible in the US.
    For 200 that 22yo Ledaig is an OOSH all day everyday, CAUSE IM AN ISLAND BOY!!!!

    Highland Park can’t be included in other Islands can it?
    As crow flies Jura & Islay are roughly 255 miles from Orkney
    Mad to think Cambletown to Bushmills is only 40 miles.
    They should leave the Regions alone unless Distilleries demand it.

    Jura reminds me of Bowmore in that all the OB bottles are awful, but it gets really good in IB land. Not as spectacular as Bowmore, but it’s clear the distillery is fucking their own bottles up for an unknown reason. Did try one, Jura 20yr One and All, delicious wine-matured bottle - could be a good one to put in a non-Sherry wine-aged episode…

    Correct about Claton. Orkney has 4 whisky distilleries so is it a region? I'll give Jura a bit of defence. I've drank worse from Edradour (single cask variations are just huge) and the 18yo isn't a bad whisky.

    Does it really matter these days? Every region is producing different whiskies nowadays. Peated in Speyside, Sherry in Islay, Triple distilled in the Highlands. Regions are no longer known for their specific styles of whiskies.

  • @edfriday7709
    @edfriday7709 3 місяці тому

    Uist now has two distilleries. Will it get a third??? I think history has to come into it when it comes to being a region like Campbeltown and Lowland when they went down to two. Other islands or closely linked islands could maybe become a region decades later after the Islands region has been around for a bit. It might all break down if there are too many regions though which some might think is not that bad a thing…

  • @edfriday7709
    @edfriday7709 3 місяці тому +1

    It could get silly with multiple small regions but I think an Islands region or sub region would now be reasonable.

    I agree the Jura 10 is not good but the 12 is so much better. The 14yr old rye cask really is a nice dram and has taken me by surprise by how much i do enjoy it. Jura CAN produce good whiskies and why the hell they discontinued the old line up in 2018 and replaced it with the present one will be a mystery to me forever as it definitely was a step backwards. But, I'm not giving up on Jura as I said they can produce good whisky and the 14yr old is hopefully the start of them getting serious.
