Hey Al just watched a video on Living traditions homestead about soil temps. Don't worry about the air temp so much as long as the dirt temp is not to warn. Love your life style and building projects and farm animals..keep up the good work..enjoy.👋
I really do not think you realize the extent of the good you do to all. You are an example, as a family, as a father and a mother, as a lovely daughter, as hard working people who are definetely not waiting for "God to solve my problems", but you are "here I go to do what I have to do to make all this work". You are a fun, nice loving family, it nourishes our souls and wakes the "I am going to work me too" in everyone of us. And then, the results are always so positive and nice, the advise you give Al is sound and interesting, and Gina cooking is so sweet and lovely. I am a chef, and there are so many things I could say to Gina about "do not do this or the other", but her cooking is so clean, simple, matter of fact if you can understand what I mean, so i do not and have never felt tempted to tell her anything. It comes out so nice, and you enjoy it so much... so.... there is nothing to be said but: KEEP ON ENJOY IT ALL!
I just wanted to say that I have been watching your channel for a couple years. And you are by far my favorite channel. I appreciate you allowing so many to watch your progress in homesteading. I watch every morning before work and have to say that every Wednesday, probably the first thing I think is, dang no Lumnah this morning. Thank you.
Bug netting was a great idea. Not only bugs but rabbits and chipmunks also. Look at Gina killin it with that driver. Getting pretty handy with the tools.
You have to be one of the best homesteading families on youtube! I love your videos. You are all so real and the things you are teaching people is incredible! Even when you make a mistake we all learn from it. Thank you for being such a positive channel!!
I loved how Gina to the Camera around the farm and showed wild flowers and the ducks and just showed the Beauty in the little things in life:-) I hope she does more of that😀 ok off I go to watch this mornings video !
Hello from Minnesota! Here are somethings on cast iron cookery for you to look for. The Lodge Cast Iron Cookbook (this has bread and biscuits, and muffin recipes in it & Dutch oven stuff), the Lodge Cast Iron Nation Great American Cooking From Coast to Coast, and they have a cookbook for just Dutch oven recipes too but I have been unable to find it. I have a Southern Cast Iron magazine Nov/Dec 2019 which has great holiday recipes including buttery herb rolls. Also a recipe for crabmeat & smoked sweet potato soup. Apparently the sweet potatoes need to be smoked for 2 hrs 30 min to 3 hrs. Have fun! Get messy! Make mistakes! LEARN!!!
Morning Lumnas suggestion on your thermometer. Place a post towards the center of the greenhouse for a more accurate ambient air temp. Being that close to the side wall will throw off an accurate reading.
Hi. Gina sage is a perennial you can plant it in your flowerbeds. I planted some last year and it's flowering this year. It's a low mounding plant so it's perfect for flowerbeds in the front and this way it won't take space in your raised beds and you can harvest well into the fall.
LOL when that hen shoved Rusty and he got SO offended. Chicks are looking great! A lot of people don't understand what it's like to live somewhere with high aerial predator pressure, and since Cornish Cross birds are so very slow, how easily they can get picked off if they're not in a tractor. I'm loving the greenhouse!
My wife loves her cast iron. Once you get used to how to clean and care for it, she says she's sure you'll love it. The main thing is keeping it seasoned.
We use our cast iron quite a bit. Mostly the frying pan for cooking homemade naan and our dutch oven for baking our sour dough bread. We love them. Blessings to all.
I love using my cast iron pans. I was blessed,my Mom gave me a few old pieces(they were too heavy for her at 89-90 years old). Over the years I got more and now use them and also use them as kitchen decorations. Thank you for sharing your journey and God bless.
Both of my grandmas gave me their cast iron skillets before they passed. Some are very old and must have belonged to their mothers before them! My M-in-L gave me a square one! I love my skillet sand use them all the time! You’re gonna love them Gina!
Would you ever consider planting concord grape vines along your fences? I grow them down in southern NH and they are very hearty in our area. They require very little maintenance and the grapes make amazing juice/jams in the fall! Thank you for continuing to share your lives with us all.
You two work so well together. I am really enjoying your channel. Your family works hard. Your farm is beautiful. You can tell you both enjoy what you do. Your daughter is a hard worker as well. Such a sweet and pretty little girl. I love the egg guessing game you guys play everyday.
Gina, you will love your cast iron pans. I have been cooking with mine for 52 years. Mine are so seasoned, the food does not stick a bit. I won't cook in anything else. You will love that griddle . I use that for a lot of things and your double handled pan will be your workhorse. Keep them seasoned well and they will become family heirlooms. Have fun cooking!
Green house is looking awesome! Plants are growing so fast. You and Gina seem like the dynamic duo! I really like the goats, so weird and confusing. Hope you get a cow soon. Like your vlogs!
Gina, I have baked bread, fruit pies on the grill. I know that you can. I didn't have a temp. on my grill I just checked on it. Hope this help you. Loves and hugs from the little old 61 lady. May God bless you and your family
Gina! Your cast iron presentation was sooo good. You have overcome your stage fright and become a terrific explainer. Thank you for pushing through your fear because you make us so comfortable watching you.
Love cooking with my cast iron skillets and pans , they are 100 yrs old they were my grandmother and my moms and now mine. I don’t have a lot of land but you motived me to get a small green house. Waiting on it to come in. My goal is to grow tomatoes all winter in it. Then try other vegetables. Have a Blessed Day
Love when you go thru the morning route. When the goats are on the milking stand, its their breaks from motherly duties and like a woman going to the beauty parla. They are brushed, washed, milked and pampered with special food. Luxury. There only one thing missing, a Petticure. LOL You make a fantastic life for your animals. Gina, you look very comfortable using the machinery to mow the lawn. Thumbs up. Instead of making small meatloaf in that cast iron pan, I would try making muffens. Can't believe you had 40 degrees. G-D Bless and stay safe.
Love the greenhouse garden beds. Everything is flourishing. My spinach, kale, onions, carrots and tomatoes are coming up in my self-wicking tubs. Plus I have a cabbage that was from scrap, that I started in water then potted. It is doing so good. Much love from OHIO ❤️❣️❣️❤️
Good to see Al consummately busy. Gina using cast iron. Must be kept seasoned and they become heavy over time. Olivia eating zucchini like its going out of style. Meat loaf in a biscuit iron skillet? Fascinating!
To keep the house cooler I have a grill that I can also use as a smoker, a Coleman stove, and a little electric oven. I have a little yard work to finish and then I start putting it together in one area. I am SO looking forward to that! Happy cooking!
Every time you show us the inside of the greenhouse, I flash on that old saying, “Be careful what you wish for, for you may just get it”. When I see that raised bed of many zucchini plants, I wonder if you’ve considered how many zucchinis that is capable of producing. Many gardeners only plant 1 seed in 1 hill and they grow enough to make everyone in the tri-state area hate the gardener. I predict you will have enough to fill a medium size dump truck. Enjoy your zucchini bread, muffins, fritters etc etc. 😎👍👏
Always fun watching you guys, especially when Al gets creative in building/repairing a project Watching last video (moving NYC) made me think there must be a way to position the coop next winter so that it’s in one spot, but by moving the netting only you’d get the benefit of two spots being used. You’d not wear out one spot over winter, you’d only be shifting the netting you could do in early spring even with wet ground.
Al. we woke up to 44 13 June 20 burr and only going to be 62 today in Wisconsin. Gina, we love our cast iron and that is all we use! once you get use to itl you will love it.
Watching this UA-cam channel has become a relaxing part of my day. Ive live a stressful life working in a high stress field, lumnah acres is a good stress reliever.
I'm going to need to get the mesh cover to put over my garden beds to prevent the bugs from eating on the veggies. This past couple of weeks have been terrible with cabbage worms eating at every green leaf in the garden beds. Gina, vast iron pans are awesome to use. Don't let them intimidate you. I've seen a lasagna pan once at the farmers convention. I'm going to look for it next weekend because the convention is next weekend. Great idea making mini meatloaf on the grill using your biscuit pan.
Really love the interchangable raised bed covers (netting or plastic). So convenient and look sharp too. Oh, am so enjoying the close-ups! Especially Figaro. lol
Grandma always said, "Never put soap in your cast iron pans!" When you clean them, pour a little oil in the pan, add some coarse salt( regular salt if you don't have coarse), and scrub the pan with a paper towel until all cooked bits come off, then rinse off salt, dry the pan, and leave the film of oil on the pan to store it. Your pan will never rust or stick for as long as you own it! I have a pan that is just as non stick as Teflon without the chemicals! Do this with all your cast iron utensils and they will never rust. Look up "How to season cast iron" even if they say "Pre-seasoned"! Good luck, happy gardening and God Bless!
Yes, I never use soap. My pans are indeed like teflon. I made omelets in my pan this morning. I use the metal scrubber (on amazon) for cast iron pans when needed which isn't very often then I rinse and wipe down with paper towel and oil.
My brother heard a chef on public radio talk about cast iron. Restaurants have to use soap to clean them. He said to wash them, dry, then heat them on the stove to dry them really well and put a tiny bit of oil on them while still hot and rub it in with a paper towel. Just in case you want to use soap.🙂
Hey Al. Next time, consider moving the wasp nest. Wasps are a gardeners best friend. Their favorite food is the caterpillars that go after your veggies.
Gina (and anyone else reading) best advice we've ever been given for cast iron was to season with avocado oil. It has a higher smoking point and leaves a harder finish. Our cast iron is essentially non-stick.
Good Thursday mornin Moose Crossing ..... You could turn part of that high tunnel into a sweat lodge ~8^) I built one of those little garden tunnels this year over my 4x8 raised bed. By the time I got the melons in, I didn't need any plastic (went from winter to summer). I think I'll get some shade cloth, and try that during the heat of summer/bug season. I can grow radishes in it in the fall this year, and spring (if it shows up) next year. I have those clips that you are using as well, to make everything easy/tight. Your pigs must really like those hens laying eggs all over the place. Maybe you'll find a pile of eggs with a broody hen sittin on them. Have a great day AL, Gina & Olivia.
Hi Gina those cast iron pans are awesome . Just a tip on the potatoes. We put ours in the microwave to partially cook them then make some slits all along the potatoes. I place them on foil add a few slices of butter sprinkle with any spices and some salt finish off with chopped onion then close up the foil. If you don’t microwave them first you’ll jus have to watch them. Ours take about half an hour. God Bless you all!
The "crops" are looking great! Cast iron has a learning curve but once you learn it you will never look back. Cast iron holds heat really well, so once your pan is hot, you can lower your temp. I've never sanded my Lodge pans, but I know many who have. I think that is a personal preference. Plus with cast iron, you can use it on an open fire, your grill and a cook stove. So versatile is cast iron! Supper sure looked yummy!!!
I use a counter top oven a lot in the summer. The grill is the best for meats though and using the instant pot is also great for preparing your meal, and then getting back to the chores! Your homestead is looking great
For the sour crout we use a crock and layer cabbage leaves and salt. Ive seen my grandmother fill a 20 gallon crock and not only cabbage but collards as well. A Southern tradition. As they place it in the crock they pack it with a wooden dowel to allow the salt to do its thing, then they use a ceramic weight on top and cover it with cheese cloth.
50 gal crock, slice your cabbage thinnly, put a layer in crock add some Kosher salt, smash the layer of cabbage till you see juice, continue till crock is full or you run out of cabbage! Put a dish or something on top of the cabbage to weight it down skim the top occasionally. That's how my dad did it!always came out delish. Check how long to leave it and how to can, can't remember all that! Been many moons ago lol
Great job 👍👏, getting a few things tidy up, planted, grass cut, dinner cooked, even fishing..... Thank you for sharing ❤️💗❤️💖🤗 SENDING A BRIGHT WHITE LIGHT OF LOVE TO SURROUND THE UNIVERSE 🤗💞💖🤗 AND EVERYONE 🤗❣️❣️🤗💞💖
When we did sauerkraut we did it in a crockpot, when it was ready we would get it out of the crock . No canning. Back in the old days there would be a barrel of sauerkraut at the general store and you would bring your own container to put it in.
Good morning Al, Gina and Olivia. This question is for Gina. As a female member of a working N.H. farm family, I have followed your channel for some time now. Gina, your transition from working on the outside to working at home , appeared to not be your own choice. How do you feel today about the homestead lifestye? Your cooking segments are welcome, as it shows viewers how you are preparing the foods you grow and raise. I recommend STOCKING UP by the editors of Organic Gardening & Farming. There may be a STOCKING UP II. Features cabbage preservation and much more. My last day of work was March 6th. My school shut down. At first, I was too busy scrambling to stock the pantries for our two farm residences. Once that settled down, it struck me that I was a free agent and could plan my day. I occasionally teach beginner organic gardening to a few students, but I also need to focus on pressing farm projects that were placed on the back burner. There are only three of us here, working a large farm. The boys just cut 1,000 bales of prime hay. 6,000 more to go! The "boys" will be 75 and 72 this year! We are hoping for 22 Hereford calves. 14 so far. Al, you inspired me to build a mini green house this spring that is working splendidly! And Gina, I am now in "The Grove" of being a full time farm wife. The All American pressure canner is in the "ready position". I just made honey/ginger/ rhubarb jam and looking forward to the harvesting season. P.S. Olivia you are also doing a great job of helping out and learning The Good Life! All the best, Diane
Purdy cabbage! Bam! Beautiful progress Al and Gina! Try fermenting some of your cabbage. It's kind of like sauerkraut. I make it a jar at a time and it keeps for weeks in the fridge. Its easy and It's full of probiotics. Just google it. A spoonful with a meal or on a sandwich or salad! My favorite is cabbage with ginger and carrot but you can ferment so many veg and variations. Thanks for sharing.
Gina once you get the hang of it you'll love the cast iron. I highly recommend getting the lodge bread pans. They are slightly smaller but get a couple and most bread recipes cook up amazing in them. In the summer I use my grill nonstop as well as my Cosari air fryer to keep the heat down. Love the biscuit pan, it will be perfect for biscuits, eggs, shortcake, and would be fun to see all the creative uses. If your area is opening up check thrift and antique stores for vintage cast iron. Once restored you'll never use a nonstick pan again.
Cast iron is the best! There are 2 Facebook groups that will help you learn a lot. Cast Iron Cooking. Black Iron Cooking, Antiques and Humor. Enjoy the new pans!
The greenhouse is looking awesome. I could’ve used some of that cooler weather yesterday, it was 106 degrees including humidex in Southern Ontario with a F1 tornado.
My parents and I always drilled holes in our feeder for our goats. Just large enough to let water drain but not to large to let the food drop through. Works well for the donkeys too.
I think you could permanently mount your bug netting under the new PVC pipes, and use the clips for the plastic over it with the clips when using it as a greenhouse, making it even more convenient
We have done some baking on our pellet grill and it turned out great. Excited to see what you try. Sound like you all might be looking at getting a cow soon maybe. That’s so awesome. Our cows are going to the processor in a couple of weeks. Can’t wait to have some home grown beef in the freezer. On our homestead we are getting some pack goats, pray that all goes well with that. We are excited. Your garden is looking great :) Love it. Thanks for sharing. Take care, see ya.
I check garage sales and thrift stores regularly for fair priced cast iron. The older stuff is usually a lot smoother than the newer mass produced stuff. Cooking with the Instant Pot during the hot weather is great, made a great pot roast and veggies yesterday. I also do a lot of grilling or smoking outside year round when conditions aren't bad.
Oh you’re sooo close to 200,000 subscribers. So good for you. Your content is so interesting and varied it’s no wonder you have so many followers. It’s a joy to at watch your family and all they do to help. Keep up the good work and you’ll be seeing 1,000,000 soon.🙀😷stay safe
I use a vintage WagnerWare Sidney 1058M cast iron skillet for cornbread. The feral pigs live on conservation woods adjacent to Grand Palm Resorts Community, Venice, Florida. They came over with Desoto in 1700 and now are protected. Sarasota County hires a trapper to trap them when they wander out. They find their own food in the woods.
Thank you for sharing the information on the PVC clips. I may try some squash next year and the bug net will keep the squash bugs away. You have a beautiful little farm and are doing such a good job of bringing the pastures back to life.
Awesome videa, as always. Your Garden is coming along great. Sellerie greens are used A LOT here in europe, they are awesome for soups and stews and roasts, fresh and dried or even frozen. And you can start to harvest a few as soon as you have more stems on the plant.
That muffin cast iron would be great to use and smoke some Salisbury steak in. Just make a onion and mushroom gravy on the side and blend the two together at the table. Oh my yum...😋
Love the Cast iron griddle and the biscuit/muffin pan. I have a few cast iron pans and they are Intimidating to me also. I guess g I cooked with them more I would get used to them. Thank you for sharing your homesteading ideas.
To see the animals all running to get fed is soothing. Everyone gets fed and are happy cuz it's warm out. Rusty has calmed down a bit. I would just put an old crock in his pen. Have a good day.🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅💚💚💚🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅💚💚💚🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅💚💚💚🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅💚💚💚🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅💚💚💚🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴😻😻😻
I really enjoy your videos and this is my 1st comment. I love your goats and pigs. I have to go to my phone to comment because I can't do it on the TV. Al I laughed so hard when you had Skunks in the chicken pen. When you found the eggs you might want to mark a couple with an X and leave them to encourage the chickens not to find a new place. For a accuratel temperature in the tunnel I would put a post in the center of the Greenhouse. Where you have it gives too close to the outside temperature. I hope you aren't offended by me sharing constructive ideas. I think you are great and I appreciate your including meals and prep but most of all I love seeing you praying to Bless your meals. I don't think we need to hear them but I love the consistency, it reminds me of my childhood. Thank you and your family for providing decent clean content. I really like the cast iron biscuit pan. Truthfully cast iron is just too heavy but using outside on a grill is a great idea. God Bless you and keep you safe.
Good morning, Lumnah Acres! Your family makes an amazing team. The homestead is an inspiration. Have a lovely day and thanks so much for sharing your experience.
Garden Netting we used on the Raised Bed amzn.to/2XPIP9B
It is good
Hey Al just watched a video on Living traditions homestead about soil temps. Don't worry about the air temp so much as long as the dirt temp is not to warn. Love your life style and building projects and farm animals..keep up the good work..enjoy.👋
Since your using clips to hold the netting could you just leave it on and put plastic over it when needed?
What happened to you yesterday I was looking forward
❤👍 Serbia

Maybe you could get a couple of lambs when the grass starts growing every year. They can mow the grass for you and provide meat at the end of it!
Your cast iron will last many lifetimes. I love mine. Cooking the meat loaf in the muffin pan looked delicious

He said to wash them, dry, then heat them on the stove to dry them really well and put a tiny bit of oil on them while still hot and rub it in with a paper towel. Just in case you want to use soap.🙂
Every time you use them.
Nancy Edgar that is how mom taught me to care for cast iron it works
Brrr! Unbelievable temperature changes but your garden is doing amazingly well!
Great video! It kept a smile on my face the whole time! What a wonderful way to start out the day😃 can’t wait for tomorrow’s video!
the veggies are growing so well i am excited for you its amazing how much you have done on the farm well done and cheers to you
Figero looks like he is enjoying the sun.
A lovely variety of chores and tasks today. Love the meat loaf in the biscuit pan.. great idea. Indiv meat loafs. All the kids and KID doing great :-)
Your commitment is commendable. Family faith farm and these inspiring videos. Thank you so much and God bless
It was fun watching the goats "helping" you install the mineral feeder in the goat shed. LOL
I always put my celery leaves in my soups.
what a fantastic garden, never have to buy fruit or vegetables ever, enjoy all your video's best wishes from the UK.
What a blessing you all are to us!
Al, please share the update on the bridge over the creek and development of the land across.....
I must have missed that. What's going on? Is this something on his property?
I guess I missed it also.
@@rosejafari8917 No bridge built yet.
Love the "Weed em & reap" shirt. You two are my favorite channels
Good morning y’all.vegetables and herbs and potatoes are coming along very nicely.
Hiya, great video, as usual. The three of you should smile more, you all have wonderful smiles... Stay safe... Steve...
Good Morning Lumnah Family. I enjoy watching your channel, because you are always giving us good hints to growing food! 😇😇😇👍👍👍
Good morning Lumnah family =)
Wow..Rusty is a meanie but I love seeing all your chickens. Awww Figaro
TYVM 🌻🦋🌻 Lumnah Acres always enjoy your videos. Both of you make everything look easy.
Great job 👍👏, getting a few things tidy up, planted, grass cut, dinner cooked, even fishing.....
Thank you for sharing ❤️💗❤️💖🤗
SENDING A BRIGHT WHITE LIGHT OF LOVE TO SURROUND THE UNIVERSE 🤗💞💖🤗 AND EVERYONE 🤗❣️❣️🤗💞💖
When we did sauerkraut we did it in a crockpot, when it was ready we would get it out of the crock . No canning. Back in the old days there would be a barrel of sauerkraut at the general store and you would bring your own container to put it in.
I'm happy for you guys, things are coming together beautifully. Your hard work is awesome and impressive. Thank you for sharing.
Good Mawnnning Lumnah Acres! The homestead is looking great, the meatloaf looks delicious! Have a great day!!!!
Great idea for the mesh onto low tunnel
Ooh No!, that's Olivia's shelter. Just think of Olivia stood out in the rain waiting for the Bus
When they were building the Goat Stop I thought it was a Bus stop for olivia.
@@shawnmcpeak6184 Haha!me too. Bet Olivia would make good use of it ,in bad weather
Gina , I am shocked! Meatloaf without ketchup is like a day without sunshine!
The meat loaf segment reminded me of when my grandchild was young. When her mom made it in muffin tins she called them “meat cakes”.
Good mauhnin Lumnah Acres! What a beautiful day! Take care!
I think you could permanently mount your bug netting under the new PVC pipes, and use the clips for the plastic over it with the clips when using it as a greenhouse, making it even more convenient
The Meatloaf Potatoes and Zucchini all looked great.
I’m so happy to see u reach 200k subscribers keep on going , well deserved
Cast iron secret is to cook low heat and slow. We sanded and seasoned our loge when it was new also. Enjoy your new cast iron!
One of my favourite things is pickled red cabbage, so good on a sandwich or as a side.
That muffin cast iron would be great to use and smoke some Salisbury steak in. Just make a onion and mushroom gravy on the side and blend the two together at the table. Oh my yum...😋
I like that idea putting meat loaf in the muffin tin. Thank you. You could cook up a bunch of them like that and then freeze them for later.
Love the Cast iron griddle and the biscuit/muffin pan. I have a few cast iron pans and they are
Intimidating to me also.
