Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me.

The guy is going to build an entire city to finish. What enthusiasm, well done
Shawn is playing Minecraft IRL.
...at the expense of nature. The world have so many, too many smog-and garbage filled cities! What we need is to preserve what is left of our flora and fauna. Destruction of a patch of these, -just for the satisfaction of just one individual, I believe, is simply just selfish. Just thinking aloud.
-G'day mates...
@@gavesbuds5934 Another neurotic environmentalist. “To the detriment of nature” what not to read. Man has been cutting wood for building, for heating...for thousands of years. So I'm counting on you this winter to run around your table just to stay warm, because fuel oil pollutes and you wouldn't have the audacity to burn wood after your stupid comment!
@@gavesbuds5934 And in the future, avoiding thinking is probably better
@@gavesbuds5934do you have furniture
How beautiful, you petted the deer in the same way you’ve petted Cali. Love and appreciation for feeding your family this winter.. Native American spirit. Blessing over you all this winter❤
Good to see your wife on there with you
True.
She have the perfect camouflage in that tree stand. Congratulations for your hunt. Hunting deer with a traditional bow, in my book it means that you are a good hunter. Thanks for sharing your hunt with us.
Great shooting Mrs. James , you've come along way .
Love the sound of the arrows from the tree stand on the last video .
If you build it They will Come, Well done Mr. James you Got this ...
ENJOY ALL.
Thanks for this video- very informative and helpful
🌻Thanks Shawn
That mill has really been a constant blessing for your place.
Yeah. A machine he used money to buy is a “blessing.”
@BerndtNorten somebody spit on your oatmeal this morning?
@ 🥴
The money was a blessing and then used to buy the sawmill.
@ glass half empty
I’m here for Cali! 🩷
I gotta say it Shawn ! Mrs. James Rocks ! 🏹 🎯 🏹
Favorite part of the show is watching you create amazing useful structures with style ! Calli 🐕 ❤
You do what makes you happy .Peace,mate..Cheers from Queensland, Australia.
👍great video
Awesomeness…love seeing you two together…target practice & hunting! Wowza…wonderful footage! 👏🏻🦌👍🏻
Hello, perfect hunting, it will be a delicious venison stew, beautiful and informative video, thank you very much.Tom
merci JAMES
The guys from Simple Living Alaska built a beautiful Mill shelter . Does the job a treat.
I always like it when the misses joins you at the homestead, and a freezer full of high quality protein is pretty cool too. Remember to thank Cali for letting you be in her videos.
Hi M. James, for the sawmill shelter , you should go see Simple living Alaska !! they did a great job for theirs
I agree with you 😊
Happy Sunday Shawn & Wife ,it looks beautiful out there in the wilderness !!! 👍🏼😊🌲🌳🍁🍂🍃
Thank you for this excellent post. Best to you and your family.
@pamelafeather6405 Your Very Welcome & Thank You Pamela for your kind words ! 😘🙏
For a second there I really thought there was a bear you've befriended on the side of your house! Fall is here and what a beautiful place you have.
Thanks for another great video 😊
Enjoyed the mill work , look forward to seeing the finished setup for your mill machine🍂🍃🍁🍃🍂
Good morning from Toronto!

I for one enjoy this content. Self reliance is so much more than building! ❤
Senin kadar başarılı bir insan yeryüzüne birdaha gelmez..🤔👍🤗🙋♂️
Awesome and outstanding content as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along.
Привет из Бельгии приятно смотреть когда ты строишь дома или другое здоровья тебе крепкого на долгие годы и семье благополучия
Well done,Excellent vidéo Thanks!
I could have gotten an 8 point buck last night with the front end of my truck, but I'm glad I was going slower than normal.
BTDT - it’s a very expensive hunt.
Fantastico sto video 🐺
SHAWN… I think the gas cap was off on your sawmill! Hopefully you noticed that before it rained in there! Great buck! Good table fare there. 👍🏻🇺🇸🇨🇦
So glad to see your with you!!
FANTASTIC.. LOVE IT!!
So wonderful seeing. Mrs. James! Great shot……
Love the new digging attachment for the tractor. By the looks of it, the water table looks very shallow, hopefully you can drill a nice well.
Thanks for sharing ..
The construction is always my favourite part of your videos.
And , hey, someone shoukd invent a giant funnel for pouring cement into small spaces. Or how about a wheel barrel with a pointed extension for the same thing? Just spitballin’.
Jag hoppas att trä spillet från runda stockarna blir till ved . Perfekt tänd ved .
Excellent as always. I thought i heard you say 6x6 for posts. I have found on my builds a 4x6 for a non load post works as good and saves 2". Doesn't sound like much but on the smaller logs I mill, it can make the difference between 1 post or 2.
Keep up the good work
Never run out of meat that is for certain, even Cali can vouch for that as she gnawed on bones whilst trying to hide them. Cheers Shawn.
Hola mee. Encantan tus videos. Que hermoso lugar donde vives. Cuida al 🐕es tu compañero. Abrazos Chile 🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱
More cooking, plz
Question - when will you be starting the bedroom addition and the sauna/bathhouse??
¡¡No tarda en comenzar a nevar cuantos inviernos ya!!
the dog is super helpful 😄🥰
hi !.. Luv ur work. Very well done. PLEASE wear eye-protection. Thank you :)
Glad My Self Reliance stays with my self reliance. That being all the skills required for relying on one’s own self to live.
Exactly. And finding stuff to eat is pretty high up on the self reliance list.
What kind of bow is that? And I would like to see some more in-depth knowledge of arrow making I love this channel awesome job getting that deer by the way.
He talked about the bows in one of the last videos .. fyi
Your wife rocks! Great shot!
ich liebe sie; immer wieder -die dekadenz.
Well done, Shawn. Great to see your wife shooting arrows and in your videos!
It’s hunting season also here in Michigan.. my husband and his sons doing the same thing.
At it again,,,,i say u cant have enough building,,,u need one with a good 6x6 beam for lifting deer..its great to skin that way..and let hang..i love your get up and go man,,thats what it takes,,,those Northwoods are great saws..i no people that have them,,watch you dont get sick,,crazy weather here..80 one day,,50 the next..carry on man..
Благодарю вас за видео.❤
3:00 Put on a hood, it keeps the heat well.
Shawn I like how you tolerate the cool weather with your shirt off .. But you probably hot from working so much 👍👍
I love watching your mill work w/lumber mill !!
I have logs milled from time to time but around here & as few & far between logs I need milled, it's hard to find a steady mill guy that stays in business. Strange but true.
Anyway, I want 1" & 2" finished dried product to work w/. But, have to ask for 5/4 & 9/4 to get that after stickering & drying time.
I understand by the time you mill your logs they've been drying for quite some time already. How do you choose the thickness of your 1" & 2" boards for instance ?? Will hey dry after milling before you use them ?? Will you use them and let them dry on the project over time, taking into consideration the shrinkage over time like you did w/the adjustable porch logs on those metal screw feet ??
Thank you for your generous consideration,
Sincerely ...........................
God Bless.
Sean James, is the man.
Damn if i could just be half the man that you are 😂 very impressed by your work and skills
If you had to do over would you go with the self propelled mill. Lucky man to have a wife that will hunt with you. We love seeing Cali the more the better. We have had 12 labs over our 44 years and lost the last one 2 years ago. Miss them greatly but the older we get the more the losses hurt. Good luck and stay safe. From Idaho
Beautiful...autum is my favorit season.....WE LOVE YOU JAMES...and me more than all
12:41 forgot the lid on the gaz thanks 🙂 happens to me many time. saw dust gets in and clog the carb 🙄
Love hunting...😊
Cool video
I like to see a Norwood sawmill work.
Shawn, a thought for you, is there anyway you can hook up a 12v car alternator to your mill so when it is running you can charge up some 12v agm batteries for use around the home, may as well utilise the machine in as many ways as you can

Love these videos with traditional archery.
Remember when this was more of a building channel? I loved watching all the cabin projects and the craftsmanship that went into them. Still enjoy some of the content, but I have to admit, I don’t care for the hunting content as much. Really miss the focus on building and self-reliance projects!
You prefer to eat meat packaged at the supermarket behind closed doors? Or are you a vegetarian?
Everyone is entitled to their opinion.😂😂😂
@@1wheeldrive751someone needs to take a chill pill
I agree!! I was hooked on the building! Really envied this man's living
Hunting is a key part of his self-reliance.
Hello from rocky coast of Maine, US. November 3, 2024. Sunday.....
Good 👍
Put a counter weight on the 3 point hitch or load the rear tires with calcium and add wheel weights to the rims
That video shot of the hunter in the trees reminded of Predator.
Thank you , Shawn .
🐺Loupis Canis .
Have your plans for the cabin changed, are you still planning to build the bedroom? Will you build another sauna and laundry building like you had at your other cabin?
@@TheEclecticOrder yes and yes. Probably next summer
@@MySelfReliance NICE!❤

Un amigo mío, el gran chupita es igual a usted señor, trabaja sin parar dia y noche no descansa, le dicen el chalija también, y a casado muchos jabalí con la onda
Hey Shawn, when are you going to build that main bedroom you were planning to build? That will be a great addition to the cabin for sure.
I was wondering why you put some water on the wood, straight after cutting it? Thank you.
❤😊
Pore a cement slab for the mill.
Shawn any thoughts of how Dick Proenneke ever came up with his Door hinges and lock for his Dutch door?? did he just think it up ? maybe it was in a book man those Hinges are so cool Im just totally amazed by them
great to see your wife, it's obvious where your daughters get their good looks ; )
Always great content! Thank you.
Awesome stuff, as per always....The modern day Richard Proenneke....
Good shooting, Mrs. James!! Awesome to get that deer, Shawn. Hello Cali 🥰👍😎🇨🇦
That's great, brother, I wish you good health and success❤❤❤❤
HELLO,:
SHAWN & OUR CALI & MISSES there !!! Glad you got the DEER ONE there that was Great !!! Am thinking maybe jerky for some of the deer meat Shawn !!! I take Jerky and cut it up into pieces with potatoes & carrots for stew meat or even soups with deer broth for it !!! If Misses likes wine that is a plus in the stew or soup also it gives it a different but great taste !!!
New tractor new saw mill hell yah
Not new though
Great shooting and great deer hunt
Shawn, did I just see you walk out in front of a knocked, tensioned bow on the range or was that a trick of the camera? If yes….bone to pick.
@@D.A.B-w7n heck no, I wouldn’t give her such an opportunity!
@ Good to hear🤪
Happy new year hello sir
I noticed you removed the metal flashing at the base of your posts out front. Was that because it was holding too much moisture?
Always have your knife on you!
Nice deer. Good for stews, and so much more home cooking during the winter coming.
Hey Sean, what's the minimum poundage for a bow to hunt deer up there?
Är det inte dags för ett såg hus ! Så att du kan såga i vått & torrt i Snö storm eller hällregn 🙂
