Research Dev here. The physics need to be changed, so engines will hopefully behave how they should. The tractive effort amounts in the game are also due for a change
Will you be adding functionality to all the controls for more realism too?
And will you allow this to run on a Mac that the only think stopping me from buying it and I really want it haha!
Also are you open to suggestions?
Check out the official discord most of your questions should be answered in FAQ
@@kylethedalek easy solution to your mac problem... buy a PC and burn the Mac...
@@Aposlexas Will do, do you have to make an account?
@@insomniacbritgaming1632 Was thinking that, but why should people be left out or forced to get another system?
I’m not for discrimination.
It's actually cheaper to buy the Eureka and stick the tender on your starter loco, than it is to buy the upgraded Porter.
What’s the point in that?
Do you get extra water too?
Or just the water that’s in the porters tank?
@@kylethedalek You don't get more water in the upgraded Porter I'm pretty sure, which makes it a moot point. Hopefully you can take water from the tender though, as that would allow tenders to be swapped and to run double tender if needed.
Immersion has been eliminated
Better yet get the biggest locomotives tender in the game and hook it up to the Porter
the locomotives where the headlights don't open require you to open the generator. It's a dynamo mounted on the top of the boiler that creates electricity for the headlights. I honestly thought that was a feature only found on locomotives build after 1900, but after doing some research I found out they were actually invented in the mid-late 1800s, i think is was the 1870's
Having used the Heisler now for over a week, I really wanted to comment on your video. The Heisler can use up to 50 to 60% regulator as well as 100% reverse and operate just fine. Anything past that on the regulator and it slips wildly like the Climax did during its segment. It can be a bit tricky to get out the power you need, but it'll rock up with a heavy train like it's nothing. I for one recommend it, even in its currently 'broken' state
I've been saving up for another engine for the mine runs and contemplating the Heis, I believe I'll go w the heisler after all - bit more beefy and steeper grades = less track (your statement as well as others seem to make it work)
Consolidation doesn't have brakes at all, as the IRL DRGW consolidations only had train brakes, no loco brakes, and this game doesn't have train brakes, only loco brakes. Also, the generator is for the dynamo which runs the headlights on the non-oil lighted locomotives.
??? You can set the brakes on the cars manually, so yeah, train brakes.
@@ostlandr Considering that's the only way to do it, it's not really feasible for the game. I believe the best way to run it will probably be to have a second person with a second locomotive to have its brakes.
@@ostlandr except that air brakes for the cars where also a thing. It's definately a missing feature.
@@ostlandr diesel is referring to air brakes, which can operated from the cab, they are known as "train brakes"
Some of these have electric lights. You need to turn on the generator to turn them on.
you can see the generator in front of the steam dome.
@@leisureshoot I was thinking the same thing. But if he doesn't really know locomotives it just looks like a piece of the steam dome
The function where it says generator turns on the headlights that turns on the steam driven power plant called the Dynamo
Ahhh is that why the heisler/climax lights are off
@@schnauzahpowahz Yes to turn those lights on you have to turn on the generator function which is called the dynamo it's a steam-driven power plant that generates power for the headlight backup light and cab lights if they have any
@@schnauzahpowahz You can see the generator, which was a small steam turbine, mounted on a bracket on the front of the steam dome on top of the boiler, it has an exhaust pipe sticking up near the safety valves, wonder if steam comes out? The real ones make a high pitched whining sound.
As of typing this comment the Class 70 now has brakes according to the patch notes
I'm quite excited by this game. I'm currently waiting on getting a new computer that can handle the graphics. I do agree that an optional switcher pilot, or at least a normal cowcatcher on the 2-6-0 would look much better. The game is still in development though and it seems like the group is really trying to improve the product. Though I look forward to maybe seeing user created mods/new maps/equipment, I don't want to see the basic principles and physics change. If you want a 90 car, triple Dash 9 headed coal train going along a 110 mile route, then there are other simulators that already fit the bill. But if you want to build a shortline railway across a beautiful and remote map from scratch (like I do)? Then this is awesome as is.
How bad is your pc
I'm also excited for the game as there is a chance that they'll be coming out with a sandbox gameplay similar to roller coaster tycoon 3 you'll buy locomotives without running out of money. I'm in a similar dilemma, my current laptop is almost expired it is completely outdated and slow so I'm going to shop for a gaming laptop on online at Best buy. I'll also make sure that I back up on my files on my Trainz A New Era game So I can upload them to my new computer when I get it
Have you playe sit yet
I'm not sure why but when you pull the whistle, it kinda sounds unsettling, like something from a horror movie.
Just imagine at night in multiplayer and someone across the valley hears this whistle.
Love the video!
I wonder if someone has gone through to see what the fuel usage is like for each of the locos.
You have to click the same key you did to lean to undo it. T is lean right, R is lean left. So if you click T you have to click T again to go back to center.
I used to not be really interested in the geared locomotive, until I went to the rail fan days at Cass. As I stood next to Shay #11, and hearing it breath and the compressor sighing, I fell in love with it.
Man i can only dream for now, Cass aint too far... just gotta fig out a way to talk the miss into it (like i did with a mountain vacation and just so happening to drive thru Saluda 😉)
I loved seeing the climax in game it’s pretty close to in person
Lights look to be modeled on Carbide lamps which use Calcium Carbideand Water to make acetylene
“The guts are moving.” Yeah the modeling is astounding!
Nothin quite like watching old steam, rod or gear driven or otherwise do their thing.
I love this! Thank you for showcasing this game. Can't wait to see some playthroughs of your railroad!~
at 49:45..
The door opens, the plate moves, the plate moves man, damn I'm sold.
Don't know if I missed it in the video, but there's a "hand valve" (iirc) in the cab that enables the brakes on the big locos, maybe that's why the brakes didn't work on the connie, but it's just a guess. I couldn't get them to work until my gf asked "what's that for?" when I accidentally moved the mouse over the valve, haha. I didn't see that it was highlighted. Man I love her :)
The deal with the lean is, you have to hit the same key to stop leaning. So, if you lean to the right with T, you need to hit T again to go back to normal.
The difference in the headlight options on the cooke (and also in some others) is that the more expensive headlights have plates that hold the engine number, the standard headlight does not (its helpful for people that give 3 digit numbers to their locomotives)
Also the red or green lanterns on the sides come from ships navigational lights. Ships have red lights on their left side (port) and green on their right sides (starboard), they are used at night when the ships is moving so other vessels know which direction they are going; on locos they can be used to signal if the train is moving normally or tender first (put red lights on the left side and green on the right side, left and right, foward beeing the direction the train is moving)
This video makes me look forward to getting the Climax and the Hisler! I believe the lights on the geared locomotives work by running the dynamo. Also, i road in a Climax in real life and there a lot of fun!! The one i road in seamed to go faster than the one in the video, the enginer told me that climaxs have gear boxes that allow you to swap between low gear with high tractive effort or a nother gear that will make the engine go faster for longer runs where the max tractive effort is not needed as much. I wish the game designers could add that to the Climax!
funny thing about the DRG Class 70's. they had a tractive effort of ~19,000lbs hence their reclassification as C-19 (Consoldiation wheel arrangement - 19,000lbs tractive effort)
The tender bug for eureka was fixed a little while back. The Cooke Moguls are getting remodeled soon with new textures as well(ie- DSP&P and UPD&G variants). And lastly The hand valves on the locomotives are the manual way to turn on the Dynamo and Compressor for loco brakes and headlights.
Edit
I was hoping to see DL&G 191, 1880 Baldwin 2-8-0 Consolidation. They have the Cooke 2-6-0 Mogul which is so close, just needs another axle. They also have the D&RG Class 70, that's also relatively close. I think I'll unfortunately have to run the Class 70 with a Congdon.
Only fault with the Porters should be ridiculously low top speed with those tiny drivers. They would have really high TE.
The lean thing is a bit tricky. R makes you lean left, and R again returns you to center. T makes you lean right, and pressing T again centers you. Took me a while to figure that one out.
The Hitbox for the F to get in a train is usually pretty low placed so if you are inside in the cabin you have to look down to get in
works most of the time
9:01 I love the level of detail with those valve gear eccentrics.
Sugar Pine logging railroad in California has a gear driven engine they take out for exhibition tourism runs. It is an offset, side piston gear engine. They let us get in the train shed and even get up on the engine.
I love the H.K Porter 0-4-2T
He looks so wonderful
Most trains have a three section wheel arrangement. An example is a 4-4-0, their are four leading wheels, four driving wheels, and zero trailing wheels. Geared locomotives like the Shays, Climaxes and Heisler’s have a different classification based on the number of trucks they have and/or cylinders they cave. Class A has 2 trucks and two cylinders, Class B have 2 trucks and 3 cylinders, Class C have 3 trucks and 3 cylinders, and Class D have 4 trucks and three cylinders and their are only class D shays.
If only they added shays into Railroads Online.
Climaxes and Heisler’s are similar in that they have their gear shaft the under side of them however, Climaxes have their cylinder power transferred through a gear box while the Heisler’s power is directed strait to the gear shaft because of the Heisler’s cylinders being in a V shape. Shays have the most unique arrangement. They have their Cylinders directly on their right side only and their Gear shaft is also on the right side so to counteract the weight of the cylinders, the Boiler of the Shay is slightly to the left of the locomotive. So while the Climax and Heisler locomotives have perfectly centered boilers and two cylinders on both sides, the Shays have their boiler to their left and their cylinders to the right. Also, Shays are the slowest of the Geared locomotives while Heisler’s are the fastest and Climaxes are the cheapest and have the shortest service life.
This was a cool episode watched it all about to buy the game after work 😝
Thanks man glad you enjoyed em
This is SO cool!!
They should add a Mallet locomotive, a 0-6-6-0 steam loco. That be the biggest loco.
You can slow the locomotive down by reversing the J bar and adding throttle
if the game mechanics is same as train simulator and such , you should be able to increase the speed of the locos with the reverser , as this is basically allows the loco to use full steam pressure if it is set at 100% forward or reverse , so having the reverser at 50% cut off would allow the loco to speed up and use less steam , like full size loco would , maybe give that ago in the game and see if your fuel, water and steam use will change ?? BTW i drive and own miniature steam locomotive soo it should work same as in game with how the miniature one works.
They intend to fully model a few more things such as that iirc
@@igorspolishproductions8107 if i recall correctly 😉
I look forward for more gameplay videos cuz this game is really cool I look forward to getting it myself once I'm updated with a new gaming laptop
Am i the only one sitting here yelling the cooke can go faster if you take off the 100% brake LOL
I did this with the parking break on a 74 pickup with a 454 and a load of gravel. By the time I got to the house, my brakes smoked for 15 minutes.
Both headlights on the geared locomotives need the generator on to work
About the connecting rods on the Heisler and not on the Climax:
Both are geared locos, driven by a drive shaft from the pistons. The on the Climax, both axels on each truck are geared and driven, thus no side rods were necessary. On the Heisler, the drive shaft only connected to the inner axel. Thus the side-rods are necessary to drive the outer axel on the truck.
The name for the "reverser" is interesting. Steam locomotives don't actually have a "reverser". It should be more properly called the 'cutoff', as it controlled at which point during the stroke steam was cut off from entering the piston. The regulator controlled how much steam got let in per cutoff stroke. Some steam engines controlled direction with the cutoff, others with more complex valve gear had a dedicated reverser mechanism to move backward (it changed the position of certain parts of the valve gear, so the initial stroke rotated the wheels in the other direction).
Most of the lights are lanterns that you can light manually others are bulbs that you can turn on from the cab
If you turn on the generator it will make certain trains go faster
I volunteered for a bit at Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad like 15 years ago and got to check out a Heisler and a Climax. Those things are huge, and the gears are just huge.
One thing I hope we can unlock later on is knuckle couplers. Iirc, all the old pictures I saw the engines had that style of coupler. And the tracks were scary-looking.
hey just by the way..
Hearing the blow-off valve, you know the over-pressure relief valve, the only thing that's preventing a boiler explosion, yeah that's not normal you're not supposed to hear that.
Fairly certain the Climax had electric lights, so try turning on the generator.
In the UI mode activate the generator to turn on the lamps
The generator on a steam locomotives with powers the headlights
I was yelling at the screen telling to turn on the generator so the lights work.
I hope that the wall clipping gets fixed. I want to actually be able to stand on the front of the locomotives. I also hope one day they add the big locomotives, such as Berkshires, and northerns. It looks fun as is, but could be better.
Agreed, ive gotten trapped in stuff so many times which aint good when a trains on the move
It's worth pointing out that this is a 3ft narrow gauge line; 2-8-2 Mikado's are just about the biggest loco's you're likely to see on a 3ft line.
On the heisler and Shay locos the drivehift drove both axles through bevel gears by passing through the trucks. The climax used siderods.
Baldwin Locomotive Works constructed over 75,000 locomotives from 1832 until it closed its door in 1956.
The lights on the ones with a generator are electric. They would not let the trains with lamp lights to work around oilfield without blowing their lights out first. Trains run their lights both night and day. It was a safety thing.
You have to use the generator for the electric lights on some of the locos.
The climax has light bulbs. It also has a generator to power said light bulbs. You might want to try that
you can also stand on the walkway on the left side of the no 5 engine you bought to get up to the light go threw the left side front window it has the walkway on the left side to get to the light
It's odd that some of the smaller engines are alot more powerful than bigger engines
On a more informational note the Eureka it's an actual steam engine known as Eureka and Palisade number 4 actually a pretty famous locomotive in the United States Narrow Gauge community
There is a lesser known sister of the eureka, called the sonoma 12 not in steam but a static display at the California state railroad museum in Sacramento
@@lilbigmorgan I had the privilege of seeing her not too long ago and knew that she had to be a sister of Eureka

Seems like the wheels spin faster than the train is moving. I know that happens initially as the train gets going but it doesn't last for long.
One thing with the brakes on the consol, i think your supposed to drop air pressure which would stop it pretty quick.
Good Job With The Video.
thank you
*staring at an electric lightbulb* gee whiz idk why I can't seem to be able to set this thing on fire
lmao
😬
The lights on the Climax and Heisler are electric. Engage the Generator and the light should come on.
That extra attachment on the front pilot is a snow plow attachment. Just not sure if it is a factory or "made on site" model. Snow plows for engines usually had a taller front surface to prevent snow build-up from coming over the top of the plow.
Gattoooooooo
I wonder how long the cylinders lasted on geared locomotives considering they're pretty much running on full blast all the time. The heisler is the fastest of the geared locomotives, though still slow compared to conventional designs.
Isn't the reverser like the transmission on a car on a steam loco? 100% either direction would be 1st gear, then the closer you get to 0 should decrease power and increase speed.
Yeah exactly. Its not implemented in that way currently but i believe they intend to patch that
I'm pretty sure those trains are narrowgate right
Yes, 3 foot gauge
So, the locomotives that you can't access the headlamp box... That's intentional, as those headlamps are electrical instead of kerosene. To operate them, you have to open the generator.
Ok a couple of questions. I love these games I used to have Railroad Tycoon and you could choose Sandbox mode. Now you would have unlimited access to building getting rolling stock etc. you did not make money but it was still fun. I like this game is there a way to add funds into your company’s account just curious. Also I am having a hard time making curves trying to make the right height roadbed and I am struggling any helpful hints would be great
the climaxes lights are electriclly powered you can see a steam generator aka dynamo infront of the whistle and one of thoes hand valves turns the dynamo on to power the lights
the lights are light from in the cab with a knob on the boiler look for the valve you can turn
This game looks fun to play just wished my PC would run it
I have a beast pc and had to adjust settings to keep my gpu cool.
Hopefully the devs take off with this and also have diff era DLC’s for guys that like the 80s engines as well. And definitely let modders in the game for maps and different skins as well. Some modders are definitely better than the devs their self. But this game is wow already.
Class 70 to stop run with brakes on all your cars and if need more hit the sand and rev gear or forward pending your direction. Personally the best all around engine in game so far. Speed and power and looks good to. Cons definitely can’t take turns sharp.
I know the game producers are still working on this but I'm really hoping to see a lot of famous American, British, and other engines from around the world, as well as Rolling Stock from those countries
Hmmm well some where converted to run on oil towards the end of the steam era as a last dich attempt to keep them running
Imagine if we just see a dda40x in there 🤣
They should really add the glenbrook or Sierra railway 3 or engines from the Durango and silverton narrow gauge railroad or the cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad or even the Nevada state railroad museum
Btw the beginning train is better than its tier 2 one also it can climb 6% grade with 12 cars
launching logs into it at light speed
To turn on the lighs, turn on the generator.
The lights were electric
43:41, the different headlight options are for lighted number boards, or not. Purchase picture didn't really do a good job of showing that.
for the lights you need to turn on the generator
Dont waste your money on the upgraded Porter, unless you really, really want it. It has extra wood but the *_same_* amount of water and tractive effort. You will run out of that water far sooner then wood, so there is no real reason to have so much wood with you in the first place. With the tractive efforts due for a change, the engine may become more useful but not as of now. (11-26-21)
1:14:40 , so Stepbro i'm stuck would acutally fit, only that the little Porter is the Stepbro...
If you take a look in the cab of the consolidation it doesn't actually have brakes. All braking must be done by hand
fair point 😉
I hope this game keeps going in development! (maybe add a little sandbox option for us folks who can't spend 100 hours to earn enough to buy all the engines) hint hint.
If you go wisley with money and trees it goes quick
Just build a line to lumber camp, buy 2 flat cars and build a firewood depot next to the loading area for logs, load logs on one side unload on other side into the firewood depot. $$$
They need to add a 2-4-4-2 articulated steam engine! That'd be massive and powerful enough for long ass full oil trains and coal drags up a pass.
I think you mean a 4-6-6-4 union pacific challenger
@@bruh1694 No, that's too big. Nice try though.
@@mr.sir. it's articulated
@@bruh1694 It's too big, and too much to farm for, plus it's much later in date, the locomotive classes I'm referring to are of this Era the game depicts. Challenger is much younger. Good option for another game though.
Puffing Billy here in Melbourne Australia has a Climax number 1692 and i think its the inly 2ft 6inch gauge Climax in the world and it is a 2 truck. it only come out for special ocations as it is Much slower then the regular 2-6-2 NA class and the 2-6-0 - 0-6-2 G42 Garrett and the newly restored and gauge converted 2-6-2 - 2-6-2 NG/G16 129.

Thanks for the vid
why is every youtuber i see so obsessed with the whistle yes it toots like whats the big deal about it
Generator on the two locos turn the lights on
you commented about the bouncing around of some of the trains... however your track is far from straight. Can't imagine that helps, Also use your generator!
Generator is only for the electric lights on the geared locos
Turn the generator on
Porter tier 1 is overpowered lol
I do not reccomend using the push-bar to push or pull more than a single car, and be extremley careful around curves, it does not pivot much and will break the link.
Yep, ive learned that the hard way. Unless its a reeeally smooth bend
@@schnauzahpowahz I think the max is about 22 degree bend, and even then it is a maybe.
@@Bendigo1 i lay alot manually by eye (which is no way to run a railroad 😉) so im not sure of the angles but in what id consider on my lines "smooth" it still decouples. Ive since resorted to putting turntables ev where possible haha
