Such a missed opportunity for the brands dressing the women from BLACKPINK. They should use their ambassadors to make a big statement, do custom pieces for them rather than something we've already seen on the runway, and yet here we are. When I was at KCD Paris, Olivier Rousteing created custom pieces for Rihanna's iHeartRadio appearance and she still ended up wearing Ulyanna Sergeenko.
LOL blackpink dresses themselves with help from their team. The brands themselves don't do anything to decide. For example, ignorant blinks said YSL chose that bland dress for Rose at the Met Gala, but Rose admitted herself in the Vogue video that she chose the outfit.

@@smoonr27 it might be for them tbh. The idol system over there is totally different, with them exerting an insane degree of control over image. And even with western stars, we see the mega big ones are given more choice/input than anyone else. Id definitely believe with a group as big as black pink, it's very possible their team has more power than the designers and they're essentially choosing from options upon options, and then everyone else gets to pick from their scraps
Especially because black pink is allegedly *very* good for business (like their followers are more likely to follow up with luxury purchases than your average pop star). There's really no reason a designer *wouldn't* pretty much let them have their pick of outfit...
@@ruminationstation4200 exactly..their companies/labels basically have most,if not all,of the power..the k-industry relies heavily on IMAGE, how the artists are perceived by the public..the girls can’t be in “kookie” clothes (unless company approved)..i’m sure they can excercise some form of control,but the company can veto if it’s not something they think would work for the blackpink brand..
Something I love about Lizzo is her approach to oversized clothing. Larger people are constantly being told not to wear oversized clothing as it will make them look ‘bigger’- Lizzo defiantly takes up space. Loved her Met Gala look for the same reason.

Agree with the Taylor dress, looks nice on her, the cool thing about how she uses fashion is to communicate and leave Easter eggs to her fans. People are speculating it references her infamous moment with Kanye at the VMAs (now 13 years ago! 13 is her favorite number), where she wore a very similar dress. It also could be a reference to her Look what you made me do music video, which was a response from Taylor about the incident that she controlled by putting in her music rather than talking to the press. One of the many ways fashion (and the ways it can be used and leveraged to communicate) is so, so fun
It could also be a teaser for her upcoming era Midnights which seems like its going to be very sparkly and ethereal.
But, she also looks like she just stepped out of the bathtub in the LWYMMD MV.

it seems to me that whenever kpop idols are invited to american award shows they always try to not impose on anyone and i hate that. But i feel like this may be a cultural thing. I wish they would all throw this sentiment out the window and just go for it, but they never do. Its sad cause they (bts,blackpink,...) would look so freaking good, like the visuals *chefs kiss*

Taylor is also referencing her own dress from 2009 when she was interrupted by Kanye and a scene from a music video where she sings about the aftermath of that incident and she's buried in a bathtub of diamonds and crystals. The fans picked up the clues so fast, which is what she's known for. Queen of easter eggs.
Yess and she announced her release of her new album Midnights which will be about 13 sleepless nights and I'm sure the night after the Kanye incident will be featured on that album in one way or another

I'm so tired of these 'iconic' brands doing ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOTHING with K-pop stars. Blackpink looks boring as hell. I'm not even a fan of that group, but they are beautiful girls and successful idols, you would think that these designers would put a litter EFFORT into dressing them!

It's because the girls' personal style isn't innovative. They choose their own outfits for every event/performance they do.
The thing about Anitta's dress is also the color. We're in the middle of elections here in Brazil and the left party fighting out Brazilian Trump (president Bolsonaro) uses the red color as a symbol...at the same day of the VMAs the TV was broadcasting a live debate between the politicians. That's why she said in her IG that was the "heart of Brazil"

I wanted more from BLACKPINK, this was their US debut at a major award show and they all wore un-memorable black ensembles... I would've loved a Pink Venom MV inspired group look while incorporating their respected brands. Overall, it was too simple, hopefully they serve next time.

Taylor’s dress reminds me of the dress she used also at the VMAS, when Kanye West interrumpt Taylor’s speech.
What I love about Taylor’s red carpet looks is that it’s never over the top, she’s always going for a shorter piece (Oscar de la renta, Julien McDonald, Versace, Balmain etc). I mean like she’s TSWIFT, her showing up is already the biggest statement. Taylor is really tall, and often times longer and bigger dresses do weigh her down a bit, a shorter piece often shows off her amazing legs and proportions her so well! What I love the most is the Pat Mcgarth makeup with rhinestones and the classy Swift red lip!! And the biggest surprise was that she part her hair down the middle (very rare for her) and the slit back bun, a really nice hairstyle on her!

I love it. I’m in my early 20s and it reminds me of all the best looks she had when I was growing up. I genuinely felt joy when I saw it.
I don’t understand why these brands do this nonsense to K-pop idols. They’re used to reach a young audience but at award shows dressed them in the most basic leftover clothes.
It’s kind of a shame that Blackpink was stuck wearing the clothing from the fashion houses they rep. I would have loved to see them take on some more daring designs from smaller Korean labels. For example, Bridal Kong always does a knockout job styling Rosie. And if they did go with international brands, it would have been fun to see more references to their videos, like Jennie’s red lace Alaia bodysuit and dress combo from the Pink Venom video, or Lisa’s Thai clothing from the later parts of the Lalisa MV, etc. The outfits wouldn’t need to be duplicates, but having them be close enough for fans to pick up the references would have been a lot of fun. Either that or they could have done some Born Pink fashion spoilers.
AGREE!! I feel like they are only wearing those brands now, and i miss when jennie used to wear accessories from smaller brands, and the outfits were way more colorful, eye catching, not just basic and plain black. I didn’t like these outfits that much.

Ok - I lol'd at your reaction to Jack Harlow's look. Also, I love Lizzo's look and was so glad you enjoyed it, too. As a plus-size woman myself, I often feel like clothes sold to bigger people are frequently big oversized sacks that telegraph to the wearer than you need to hide your body. I love it how LIzzo's look turns that on its head by being so glamorous and calling attention to her rather than deflecting attention.

I am a fashion school dropout and adore couture! I agree with everything you said and love your taste! I liked Taylor Swift's dress and would have loved to have seen it either above the knee, or below the knee or long. Totally love Lizzo!
Taylor definitely has a slip underneath, you can see it at the very bottom, a slight crease on the left thigh and the hem of the slip on the right thigh.
I happened to pause it at the exact right frame where it was SUPER obvious, so I was so confused at why people were confused.
It's like Gaga's meat dress pt. 2, where you could even see she was wearing pulled up socks to avoid having the meat touch her skin at all.

i agree but sadly that’s what’s considered amazing in korea. the k-industry praises this type of minimalist, chic and simple fashion on red carpets and music shows they usually frown upon originality and being extra/ over the top. Fashion at kpop music shows really contrast the type of outfits they wear in their music videos though. I think it would be cool to see the types of outfits they wear in music videos to be on the red carpets but they would be made fun of by the korean public and be called too extra and dramatic.
I am so glad you liked Lizzo. When I saw it I thought she looked beautiful and was much more interesting than most of the people on the red carpet. Yet I saw quite a few negative comments. And it was just like, are we even looking at the same look?

For Jack Harlow, I think one part of the problem could have been if Hermès didn’t want to have the pants tailored. If it was the same runway sample, as I imagine it was, the model would be at least three inches taller than Jack. It is easier to tailor a wool pant in a non-destructive manner than leather.
It's crazy to me that designers have those priorities though.like, this is TERRIBLE advertising for them. If I was a designer, I'd be sending my own people to tailor every garment to make sure it fit like a glove before doing press, otherwise what is the point of sending it out at all?

Lizzo's look is an example of the entire glam team working together and having a VISION and executing.... instead of hair and make-up showing up the day of and just doing WHATEVER

I agree Blackpink looked underwhelming and they missed an opportunity. They are known for colourful looks in their video and yet here we see them looking sombre and it didn't suit their energy which is more fun. Bad stylist decisions.

I don't want to compare blackpink to the spice girls but the thing is...nothing is memorable about blackpink during that vma's while you can still remember until today what ginger spice wore (and probably the rest of them) back in the day because it was so iconic. Pop stars are supposed to set the trend, not to blend or fit in...and that's what Blackpink is doing imo.

blackpink originally planned to wear pink but since they thought the carpet would be red, they decided to wear black- and the "red" carpet turned out to be black 😭😭(from jisoo)

Red carpets became boring because of commercialization. The focus is very much on the money than the artistry in the garmets and/or their presentation. It might be a biased and faulty view, but celebrities just wear brands for the pricey pricetag and not because the garmet fits their artistic sense nor because they appreciate the designer/creators

Taylor may have outshone all the other attendees at the VMAs this year, however there may be other solid contenders who are seemingly fit to be under the category of ‘best dressed.’ The VMAs is pretty much a big deal to everyone, including people who may not consider themselves music enthusiasts, but decided to tune in and see what these celebrities, singers, songwriters, producers, etc. are going to be masquerading at the event. It’s good to see Blackpink as more of a universal girl group instead of being a K-pop all-girl ensemble. They just have so much to offer to the table. Their agency, YG Entertainment, may have treated the girls unfairly, and we all know for a fact that they, as a girl group, deserve so much better in terms of opportunities, etc. Anyway, I’m so intrigued by analysis like this. It’s like giving so much depth to fashion without exaggerating too much. Fashion is commonplace, and yet people are doing absolutely what it takes to really step up their game and be known for who they are through the outfits they wear even at special events.

There’s a behind the scenes Oscar de La renta video that shows Taylor’s garment more closely and unbelievably those jewels are attached to a very thin gossamer type skin coloured fabric ! If you look closely there is a flesh coloured string at the waist and neck keeping it all together - unbelievably delicate and beautiful. She also altered the design to be a bit more modest at the neckline than the original & it sits shorter on her but that may be due to her height relative to the model’s.

I love Blackpink but I agree with you. I However, if you look at how celeb dress for red carpet in Korea (or in Asia), the style is either minimalistic or classy. Blackpink’s member outfit is considered quite extravagant for Asian standard and style. I know that this is a VMAs in USA but If they are to dress more I think they would not feel comfortable and would not feel as themselves.
Not asia, its just a korean thing. Japan really appreciates weirdness and eccentricity and individuality, and China loves glamour and luxury so their red carpets are always super extra. Korea is much more about the reserved, conservative, simple, classic and basic vibe. If the blackpink girls wore anything too crazy then koreans back home would probably make fun of them for it and think its ugly. There's a lot of pressure to conform in korea and individuality isn't rewarded, however this isn't so much the case in the rest of east asia. Like Fan Bingbing always SERVED on western red carpets, she exemplifies the glamorous chinese aesthetic which in korea would be considered "too much"

The girls regularly wear outfits that show far more skin than that. You just don’t always see it because it is how they dress in their private lives. I’ve run into Jennie at some parties held by mutual friends, and she has no qualms about modesty any more than a celebrity from the US does that is her age. The only member that I know for a fact isn’t big on dressing up is Rosie. She very much prefers casual clothes and just the basic LBD for special occasions. Lisa and Jisoo are more okay with letting their stylists take the lead without the extra input Jennie puts in for herself.

I think they'd be perfectly fine wearing more extravagant, out there looks since they frequently do for their music videos. Like, I've seen them in more interesting looks just performing on music shows in korea, so i honestly don't think it has to do with their comfort levels.
Blackpink should have worn the pink outfits from their Pink venom Promo photos. Way more interesting🙄🙄🙄. Look them up if you haven’t seen them

k pop groups really confuse me because even the outfits they wear for videos and concept teasers are 1000x better like why would you ever want to tone it down for a carpet? like thats the time and place to go all out.

Ok but for the record: Anitta wore that dress to represent “the heart of brazil” the vmas occurred at the same time as a big important presidential debate in Brazil and red is the official color related to Lula the most prominent candidate running against far-right bolsonaro. It was most certainly a political statement
Also the Brazilian flag during her performance (a far-right symbol unfortunately) was behind her wearing red aswell and there’s a famous saying here from the far-right that goes “our flag will never be red” referring to both lula’s political party and “communism”
